[Exalted, ?] Most High

Upgrade?! That's heresy, that is!
Well, it is an upgrade (that's the only reason it could alter the Exaltations). Before the GC when your Limit Track filled you went catatonic and lost a point of permanent Willpower.

Of course, in 3E I think they explicitly do not want to go into detail like that regarding either the Primordials or the Exaltations.

Winning the tournament is the most important now, right? Brings both the social recognition as well as personal power with Essense. And I'm afraid pulling the punches by investing in a long-term build might not be the best idea against this DB crowd. So upping direct combat capabilities and restoring the energy to better utilizes them seems like the best bet.

For Full War Regalia vs. Sword and Self: short term does not necessarily just this tournament. Unless we go for Stockpile, Ulyssian will have spent most of XP and training time anyway. Unless a time skip is guaranteed (and even if it is), he has too many OP enemies in the here and now to curb his short term prowess so. Both the tournament contenders and the Sids, who won't likely wait for Ulyssian to achieve his optimal build. Actually, there is a big chance of them striking exactly now. Whether at the Academy, in which case the next power-up time skip becomes not so certain, or at Ulyssian himself, with him currently outside of Zao's reach. All the more reason to become as strong right now.

Also, the long term costs of Regalia do not seem higher than those of Sword and Self. It would be one thing if the two choices were even a little close in terms instant benefits, but from the description Sword and Self 'has much less direct combat strength than Full War Regalia', which is the most precious resource right now. Regalia's Evocation, on the other hand, will become available 'much later down the road'. Much can happen during that time.

[X] Ayala

While Cathak Polemgaos is dangerous, he is also a relatively known variable. While the AVOID / ENCOUNTER would still be good to use on him, I doubt the investigation will dig up many weaknesses, or that he indeed has prominent weaknesses in the first place. Too old, experienced and well-rounded character. Better to spend the action on an unknown to get both benefits. I doubt that Cathak is more dangerous than some of the less known combatants. ...And since there is always the possibility of choosing the target worong, even better to maximize the gains by investigating a person which we know has secrets we can uncover!

Also, I personally find the presense of the Infernals the third most interesting element right now (right after the tournament itself and Nilul's hilarity). Learning that they are not DB Exalted looks like a great way to acquire leverage on them, as I doubt they want to be found out. Then use that leverage to, for instance, make Ayala throw the match. I'm sure nothing bad will happen. And of course, interacting with Infernals will in turn most likely affect Nilul interactions...

Basically, it seems that Nilul just exploited us and insulted Polemgaos to get one over on her rival. Fairly minor in the grand scheme of things, but a telling reminder that Nilul has her own agenda.

I think it was made quite clear that Nilul had reasons for wanting to attend, and that choosing her would help pay back the debts we owe her. She was not accompanying Ulyssian because she is a hollow puppet serving as an extension of his will. Granted perhaps we need some mindrape Charms to insure that no one has any autonomy or ever has any interests that are not directed at furthering the will of Ulyssian, since that seems to be what people want given how often "X has some interests that aren't Ulyssian's" and having to deal with allies on a give-and-take basis rather than just ordering them around.

Kind of surprised Odyssial didn't develop them for extra First Age hubris, really, since that would seem to be optimal, but then maybe he just filtered out all such thoughts as obvious meme-attacks from SWLiHN.

I suspect it was more a comment on, "Look! Hours after we decide to trust Nilul she's surprising us by making us enemies! This is her default untrustworthy behaviour, and I warned you."

He did make:
When Odyssial started developing Social Charms seriously, (at like, E6) he probably focused on inflicting fear and paralyzing doubt. He's already good at intimidation, but Odyssial has a Charm that causes anyone he intimidates to gain a Defining Intimacy of (Terrified Helplessness) towards him, instead of being allowed to choose the context of the intimidation-derived Negative Intimacy.

And remember, as a Dawn Caste, he can terrify things that are immune to fear, like rocks and the fabric of reality.
With upgrades, he can make it an unbreakable Defining Intimacy!

Poor Gods. Poor Lytek.
Which was probably good enough for his needs.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean we can't analyze Nilul's reasons for want to do so. I thought it was an interesting tidbit, and given the general sentiment in the thread towards her, the subject of her ulterior motives could stand a bit more clarification. She isn't a hollow extension of Ulyssian's will, and we ought to keep that in mind.

Probably not an efficient use of time, when he could just terrify everyone and everything, up to and including the fabric of reality, into acceding to his desires.

Hmm. Maybe that is how he initiated himself into Sorcery. Other people have shaping rituals like emulating the behavior of a demon that initiated them, drawing power from the flames, etc. Odyssial just went "Give me what I want, and maybe I won't completely obliterate your existence". And even after the fabric of Creation meekly agreed to do so, the jerk still went and nearly managed to erase poor Creation-chan and replace her with something fitting his vision. :p

On that matter, Nilul clearly got more information form the feast than Ulyssian. It might be beneficial to learn what exactly she found out or achieved there. She won't hide the parts that can help Ulyssian without negatively impacting her own standing with him. And right now the only option that mostly guarantees it is Decompress, as it involves hanging out with Nilul.

On another note, someone will probable try to poison the food. A high risk option that will make Uly even more tired right before the start of serious combat.

Remember, if we don't win, we will be stuck at E3 until we spend several months meditation, time which we dont really have. We have currently reached the limit of charms we can get for E3, so we need to get to E4 asap so we can further increase our power. While going all in might be more disadvantageous in the long term, it also gives us the highest possibility of winning and getting E4.

As for what we need to do, regaining willpower is vitally important since all of our most powerful abilities require us to use it, and regaining it is relatively hard. However, that too applies to the other fighters. Thus, I fully expect someone to poison the food, as well as someone to try and disrupt the rest of the champions so as to ensure that they will not fight as 100%. Since Uly used such tactics in the academy, making him a suspect for such acts is quite easy.
Nellens has access to the mortals that run this place, while Ayala has her own perfect disguise charms as well as celestial circle sorcery, thought we dont know that IC. However, we can probably leverage our own perfect disguise charms to pretend to be someone else so that anyone targeting Uly wont be able to find us.

Having fewer weaker opponents to wade through mean we'll have more energy for people like Polemgaos, so it does help us out in that regard, perhaps even to a greater degree than justing resting would. Plus, it just seems in-character for Ulyssian to prepare for any fight to an almost ludicrous degree; what kind of paranoid Solaroid doesn't poison or spy on his enemies the night before a tournament?

Of course he will prepare; but what is the optimal preparation?

Also, I personally find the presense of the Infernals the third most interesting element right now (right after the tournament itself and Nilul's hilarity). Also, it's unlikely they'll throw the match. The Realm doesn't even know that Infernals exist.

Easy, just give 'em Ambition. Doesn't matter what they want anymore!

Could we just talk to the others competitors ?
I mean I'm kinda interested in Cynis Esertia, Whose-Sword-Falls-Like-Rain.

Indeed! You will need to win the tournament, or perform some other feat of similar boldness and daring, to achieve a breakthrough!

*horror* Uly talking to someone without a chaperone?

Or do you mean Uly + Nilul?

...Well, at the risks of dooming us all, I though he could try on his own, considering her reaction to Nihul she seemed like the one less likely to try to cut our head off if we're our usual blunt self

I was happy with this update; Ulyssian managed to avoid speaking almost entirely! A noble feat. Now all we need to do is make some good old fashioned "I must break you" style introductions for our opponents!

But at this point, there are already going to be people poisoning, spying, sabotaging, and so on. Isn't it more efficient to replenish ourselves and allow our enemies to cripple one another while we do nothing? Even if they suspect us it still plays into hands, because then we're the guy who can spend an entire night fucking everyone over than walk out the next morning as though we spent it resting.

Which one comes first, the tournament or Nilul's hilarity? Are the other contestants interesting to you?
Can't compare them, love both! I do think they complement each other quite well, making the tournament more lively and light-hearted. Compared to, say, the one from the Odyssey. But if they were opposing options, I would have to regrettably go for the tournament. Nilul is a great character, but she really can't be compared to finally getting some serious conflict after months of being cooped up in the Academy. Simply less optimal than E4, recognition and a change of pace in one (hopefully).

The champions are great as much as they comprise the tournament, so unless they become relevant in another way, I kinda just view them as part of it. Don't know much about the characters otherwise. Which is, incidentally, why Ayala's presense there is great.

Also, it's unlikely they'll throw the match. The Realm doesn't even know that Infernals exist.
Was just throwing out ideas. That's why I specifically said 'not DB Exalted', assuming that would already be a reg flag in the Realm. Honestly, at this point I just hope to approach them or otherwise find out their business there. Go from there. Depending on their purpose, other than winning the tournament, maybe they could even become temporary allies with Ulyssian...?

Everybody voting to Investigate or Decompress, I think you should seriously consider the compromise vote of Power of Friendship. How hard could it be to follow Saery and Raern from blocks away as they talk to mortals? It's practically restful!

If you want to turn in Nilul, sure!

Seems like a copout to prepare by relaxing, though, and social interaction with Nilul can be somewhat stressful.

I think choosing to follow Saery and Raern probably falls under investigating Raern, honestly.

Ah, but not when Ulyssian is actually tired. Relaxation in this case includes tangible benefits like restoring his reserves. It is not ineffectual lying about. Also, the option mentioned light traning. And if you want to spin hanging out with Nilul as inevitably stressful, which in itself is not a fact, it can be considered as mental exercises, i.e. preparation for the tournament.
