Digging for Nations in the Desert (No SV, You are a Micronation in the End of the World)

The Call to Arms
The Call to Arms

(Edward POV)

Edward J. Talos, Sargent, Serial Number 3456745, looked at his discharge papers with the same glum of disbelief that many seemed to have when returning from Vietnam to the United States.

He had survived two years worth of war and suffering to come home to a cold shoulder and insults.

He looked up from his home gym to see his fiance looking at him. "Hey honey?"

She looked at him with a hint of the same sense of longing you had when you left. "I've been called in for a night shift honey…don't stay up too late."

"I'll be out at a reasonable hour. Don't worry." You said as you hugged her good night.

It had been the third night she had been called in.

More and more people going in, the Anti-War Protests are getting worse.

To say nothing of the questionable decisions the government was pulling these days.

Seeing nothing better to do you locked up and sat yourself in front of the TV to think and see what was going on.

--------------------------

"In Egypt today," Walter Cronkite spoke with his usual, upbeat cadence. "Unknown forces of a fourth party joined the civil war for the fighting in the Siege of Alexandria. After threats from the Islamists, under the command of a council of Islam, called the Brotherhood, threatened, that if the city were not to surrender immediately, and all non-Muslim denizens were killed, in the name of Allah, they would raze the city to the ground, and kill everyone. Other Government forces and Rebel forces were unable to set up a ceasefire in time to protect the city, as fire rained down upon them from Government aircraft." Walter Cronkite almost didn't believe the story he was reading. After all, until less than an hour ago, when every single station in the world was giving this same story, no one believed it. But the report was from cameras on numerous sources within the city, and from those mysterious saviors themselves. "I inform you all, that viewers' discretion is advised."

"At 9:55 AM Local time, three helicopters that were not part of any national military broke through air defenses and Brotherhood control and rained fire upon the surrounding forces blockade, and announced that if they were fired upon, they would not hesitate to stop the war themselves."

Images played. A camera rolled as they dismounted a helicopter, and then jumped, without a zipline, and only a rope from the helicopter to keep them from dying.

Bullets fired. And none of the footage that was caught from the cameraman that jumped would be suitable for a live broadcast. No one would ever see it, at least not now.

But he had seen it. So much blood, so much death. How could one man be such an efficient machine of death? It mattered little, because he found what he looked for, and from his Russian words, it was his family.

But a minute later, there was a cut, and then climbing up the side of the building, with explosions going off, was the man who jumped, holding five people. A woman, and four children, all in his arms.

The rest of the footage played out as the mercenaries, climbed back into the helicopter, and then left.

The footage came from a nation called: The Majestic and Mighty Lands of Wài Tiāntáng, the rest of the name was scrubbed off, marked off by a pen. It was much longer, but the postage was not there. Well, kinda.

It was rubbed off.

Your translators that knew the dialect said it meant one thing.

Outer Heaven

"Outer Heavan…I don't understand…yet I want to." You said.

-------------------

The Months passed and you planned and you reconnected with dozens of your old Unit.

Cal Henderson was In CIA and had come home following an odd amount of time in Central America.

Dominic Sheperd was drilled out after a lengthy service.

And Art Magnus had finally seemed to come out of exile.

"So…You all know why I'm asking you to be here tonight?" you said.

"No…not really why?" Cal said.

"I'm thinking of asking to become a Mercenary and joining this Outside of Haven Place and I don't want to be alone." You said.

Cal nodded. "What we could be doing is tantamount to Treason?"

"Is it treason to sell your sword as a businessman? We're a capitalist nation it's not illegal." You said.

"It's frowned upon yet not illeagal?" Art said, "Read the law books, nothing in them says the idea or doing it is illegal.

Dom for his part frowned. "All of you are insane we could be killed or worse thrown in prision?"

Cal laughed. "Prison worries you…what worries me is what the CIA wants me to do, I don't want to tango with the best soldier from Asia."

"So…The Times has her speech… let us measure it up." You said. "Maybe what she says may finally convince us?"

No more pussy footing around lets read it:

"I am speaking, this message for the entire world to hear.

We are a nation of killers, of soldiers, of outcasts and rebels, and of those who just don't belong."

"To those who see this act as an illegal violation of sovereign territory, I ask you then, what is this sovereign territory? They were created without the consent of its people, of those that lived there. No one lives here, and despite its claims from other states, they do not want it. This land is Terra nullius, by both states. It's what they used to pay me for my mercenary work when it came time for them to pay me what I was owed."

"But I am breaking no laws, and wish for no further laws to be broken. We are not a nation devoid of morals or principles. Merely in the act of creation, we make enemies with those that seek to use these same laws to destroy us."

"The world from which we come, the world in which we belong, and the world in which we find meaning is not a peaceful place. It is cruel and violent, and it is no place in which others should live. We choose to live in that hellish world, but as our neighbors demonstrate the innocent are all too often thrust into hell with us against their will."

"But I believe that if we work together, towards the common good, we can build heaven amidst hell's despair. So I have brought these warriors together to my sovereign land to make a nation where all may know peace."

"Whether you're a merc who wants to kick up their feet between jobs, a civilian who wants a safe refuge to build a life, or anything in between, we welcome you to join us in Wài Tiāntáng!"

"So open immigration for Mercs without a real cause and a place to belong?" You said.

Cal nodded. "I don't think she'll let just us and our families show up…she might want something…tangible?"

"Don't worry about tangibility I've got that covered." You said.

--------------------------------------------

"Good Jesus man you restored them all!" Cal said.

"Yep…this represents half a decade of work! And one failed investment into something called Fourth Generation Warfare? I pissed off that staffer! And took their money and the old designs!" You said

2 M38 Wolfhounds.

"I thought this project was abandoned!" Cal said.

"Yeah but it was a damn waste of a good design and I spent good money on it after buying the documents and getting a copy made." You said.

Hell it was perfect.

"Dom's still got his C-47 he bought to run his Air Cargo service?" You said.

"I do…I'm telling you Air mail is the way of the future…so as long as we can get the fuel and the goods…I'm thinking this can work." He said.

"So the CIA know right?" You asked.

"I'm not gonna tell but if you idiots are going to a hellhole for money, I might as well be the adult in the Room." He said.

"Brilliant…now how do we load this thing, and our wives are okay with us doing this righ?" You asked.

"We told them we were getting a good-paying job…so yes." Cal said.

"Alright… TO OUTER HEAVEN and the Godless mess we're supporting." You said.

They had no idea what they were getting into.

AN: Our Call has gone out and many are answering...with Tangible results.

Well... THats... Something.

What are your rewards?:
-[]Some Mercs Brought some Stuff
-[]Meanwhile in Ethiopia
-[]Sometimes the Best way to Get ahead, is to get Armored
-[]+10 to military rolls For this turn

I can't choose...Guys give me some analysis!!
Given how much of our control is tied up in military action this turn I'd take the roll bonus. It's pretty important to build up a stockpile to expand our ability to do more stuff in a turn, and we gain more on success (and lose more on failure).

Also if I did the math right it more than doubles our triple-crit rate (from 1.76% to 4.67%) which is sweet, since we've seen how effective those are.

[X]+10 to military rolls For this turn

Turn 8: To Build a Better World
Turn 8: To Build a Better World:

-[X]The Red Tsarina's Death: She is a problem that needs to be dealt with. Permanently. (Cost 10 Control) Rolled: D100 + 30 => 32

She escaped in the Chaos of the god damn attack, while you were gone in Rhodesia.

She fled to the Soviet Union.

Bitch. She didn't even have a good way to even escape, she risked it all on a bomb.

Failure.

The entire triangle is now yours.

The Soviets do not agree with that.
------------------------------------------

-[X]The Bush Wars of Rhodesia (Revolutionaries): Well you might not like those boys, the snakes that you have heard of willing to send places to hell for their men, but you were not interested. There would be the African Republic. Though the less time with Mugabe, the better. (Cost 4 Control) Rolled: D100 + 30 => 41

To describe the shitty situation here in the place known as Rhodesia was to try and describe two shitty people trying to live together, with one being ever so slightly worse than the other.

And that slightly worse was the god damn government. Yes, they were racist assholes who hated blacks and wanted to treat them as second-class citizens, but the Rebels were not much better.

Ethnic and Tribal violence was rampant throughout the rebel groups you had been assisting with turning into a force that could defeat an extremely motivated and organized fighting force. Their leadership had no plans with what the nation would be like after the war was over, and the 'Republic' They wished to form was established.

All you knew was that this was not going to end well.

But they paid with diamonds, precious stones that could be turned into more valuable artifacts.

You, however, did not stay any longer. Mugabe was a pig, and you knew that if there was going to be stability here, he would need to be muzzled like a dog. Or put down.

Reward: You have successfully trained the guerilla forces to a standard. Not a very good one, but one that won't be driven off by farmers with hunting rifles or even knives.

Unfortunately, the very fact that there is tribal and ethnic violence breaking out between rebel groups means that any cohesion will need to be fostered by a strong man.

You have little hope for this rebellion, but you have little trust that the government will be more… liking.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

-[X]Organizing the Companies: You have so many mercenaries that you need to organize (Cost 2 Control) Rolled: D100 + 30 => 101+D100 + 30 => 107+D100 + 30 => 123+D100 + 30 => 76=

You coughed.

"Mike, what the fuck?"

"We made our companies." He said.

"No, but why are there so many flags?" You asked.

"We got bored, and decided to decorate."

"With flags?"

"Yes."

"Did you really-"

"Yes." He replied with a smile. "All the companies are even licensed to operate in every nation on Earth."

"How-"

"Dave." Mike smiled.

You wanted to kiss Dave Sterling right now.

This was a gift.

Reward: Companies are now organized and recognized as legitimate private security companies that can serve anywhere.

Gain National Spirit: Homeland of Mercenaries; All Mercenaries of the Planet call Outer Heaven their home. (+10 to all military roles. +10 to social rolls)

Every nation on earth realizes that you mean business.
---------------------------

-[X]Tired Faces, and Worn Out Places: So… Which idiot on the planet put a hit out on you, and what idiot would travel across the world to collect. They'd must have some balls to try and collect? (Cost 4 Control) Rolled:D100 + 30 => 89

You smiled. "So the Mao risked a fortune just to kill me." You turned to face Ma. "Wanna try to collect it just so I can escape?"

"No, that would be embarrassing enough to kill him, and while that would be funny, I would really like to see him lose power."

"I have an idea." You smiled devilishly.
------------------------------
Dear Chairman Mao,

Nuts!

From Li Mei
----------------------------------------------

Reward: You deliver the ultimatum to the Chairman, who is more confused than anything.

But no one has come after you yet, so either he rescinded it, or your message to the world was enough.
-----------------------------
-[X]The Only Thing They Fear is You!: You are going to announce to the world that yes, you are alive, and you are well. Take that China! (Cost 3 Control) Rolled:D100 + 30 => 98+D100 + 30 => 125+D100 + 30 => 99+D100 + 30 => 60

"This message is for the People of the world, and to those that claim to be me, Li Mei.

It is a dangerous proposition for you to even attempt such a daring, blatant move. For I am alive, and as many of you know, and the Sovereign leader of a nation that is building into something never seen before.

You must ask yourself a simple question before you continue?

Are you willing to die? Are you willing to uphold my reputation in doing so? For I am willing to kill to protect only my reputation, but also my people that may, in the fog of war, may see you claiming my name, and follow you. If you fail, they will die, and so will you.

I am asking this, not to sow fear, but to state with simple certainty, that your attempts to take my name, will also lead to taking on a reputation. And that reputation will link you with death. Do not take it lightly. There is only one Li Mei, and that is me. You will not succeed with the contests and feats I have done.

I am The Breaker of The Desert. You are not."

Reward: No is going to be stealing your identity anytime soon.

Gain Trait: The Greatest Mercenary: There is only one great mercenary on the planet. YOU! (+10 to social and military rolls)

-[X]Hire Some Workers: You are not doing all the grunt work all by yourself. (Cost 2 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 107+D100 + 10 => 86

"How many did you hire?" YOu aksed.

"Two hundred."

"How much did it cost?"

"Two million."

"The Hell Ma!" You proclaimed.

"You wanted workers, you've got workers." She said.

Reward: Workers hired.

+10 to economic rolls for three turns.
------------------------------------------------------

-[X]Starting up the Fire of Industry: Well there is no time like the present to decide to turn a single patch of desert into something amazing (Cost 2 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 14

Once again, you are… not able to start something special.

Dammit.

Failure.
-------------------------------------
-[X]Building a Home for a Family: You did Promise that one woman you love a villa. Best get on that. (Cost 3 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 15

Ma, you can explain, you really needed to build the bunkers!

Wait don't use the shotgun!

Failure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
-[X]My Kingdom for a Horse: You need a horse because none of the jeeps work. Fuck (Cost 1 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 62

You saw a white horse, and you took it. It was a mixed Arabian with a white coat that seemed to come from an American bread you did not recognize.

That's nice.

Reward: You have a horse. Effect unknown, but you know that people fear you more.
---------------------------------------------
-[X]Build Barracks: Your people need a place to stay. (Cost 5 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 107+D100 + 10 => 36

Well, all the building went to the… Ehem, food productions.

So everyone else had to take the slak and build their own homes for awhile.

Everyone was happy when the barracks were finished.

Reward: Housing set to Bad.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-[X]Develop Sustenance Agriculture: Well the Desert isn't the best place to farm, but it is a start? (Cost 5 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 107+D100 + 10 => 96+D100 + 10 => 36

Well, you hadn't expected to do that, but you did realize that there was something amazing you would do.

You did a pit a few feet down, and stack them, scattering the planter boxes, and then fill with the water reserves.

You haven't discovered how to really retain water, so it's a net loss, but you were able to produce a crop that could feed 5000 people, one meal a day.

You were utterly fucked and reliant on imports. But you could produce food.

Reward: Sustenance Agriculture is now Meh.

Cannot be developed further unless technology is developed.
-------------------------------------------------------

-[X]River Connections and if Such irrigation is possible?: Wait there is something that can make the Nile reach you? Inconceivable?! (Cost 1 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 32

It was impossible, at least with the current technology.

Or the current thinking.

Failure.
-------------------------------------------------------

-[X]Land Development and other signs of Civilization: Maybe you can make infrastructure and roads that will make things. (Cost 1 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 14

You didn't spend ten million dollars on roads. They were spent on farms.

Failure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

-[X]Tell Dad to Fuck Off: Time for the semi-annual letter to your father, who will need to burn in all hell for this. (Cost 1 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 39

Turns out that Dad is in a prison camp at the moment.

You were surprised by the Glorious leader's restraint at allowing him to live.

What the fuck Why is he not dead!

Failure.
---------------------------------------------

-[X]Create something new (Agriculture): Well maybe you can use that big brain and do something amazing. (Cost 3 Control)
--[X]Take another swing at solving the water retention problem. Desert's not getting any less dry any time soon. Rolled:D100 + 20 => 24

You didn't solve the problem.

Dammit!

Failure.
------------------------

-[X]Say Hello To the Glorious Leader: Wei is a fine boy, last you met him. He seems now to be a fine man. Perhaps there will be no hard feelings about the whole… going mercenary thing. (Cost 1 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 49

You had sent a letter, but only received a very lukewarm response.

You and Ma looked at the letter that went on and on about you being a traitor to the people and how your politics were.

Frankly, you got bored after the first three lines, they were so unoriginal. Why can't world leaders be original in their threats?

Like the Cossacks letter was amazing. Why weren't more letters written like that?

Cut you were seen now.

Reward: You have sent a letter to the Glorious leader.

His response was about in line with what you expected. He wants you dead.
----------------------------------------------------------

-[X]The KGB Says Hello: Oh, the KGB found you, and aren't trying to recruit you? Oh god, this must be the end of the world. (Cost 1 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 34

So the KGB are having second thoughts.

Good, maybe you will have some good contracts soon.

After they stop trying to kill you of course.

Failure.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

-[X]It seems that the Americans are Back… Again: American CIA operatives in Egypt, coming to you? This will be interesting at least. (Cost 1 Control) Rolled: D100 + 10 => 11

Eh, so the Americans tried to kill you.

No big deal.

Their failures just remind you of one thing.

You are the good guys.

Of your nation of course.

Failure.

-[X] Create Soldier of Fortune, a monthly newsletter posting reviews of various mercenary outfits, private military corporations, security firms, and generally guns for hire. It rates them based on their equipment, training, reliability, international and general reputation, suitability for various jobs that they have a history of being contracted to do, and moral integrity as according to Li Mei, her wife, and various friends she is able to get to comment on such things. Also a phone line by which various certified employers can submit their own reviews. Rolled:D100 => 69

"It has porn!" You shouted.

"Well, yes." Mike replied. "Only in the back though, everything else is entire to the standard you set out.

"Goddammit mike, I hire you to set up a magazine and this is what you create." You had read it, it was pretty damn good all things considering.

But the problem was… the Porn. "We are not a porn magazine."

"Problem is, we've already printed, and I'm not wasting money on reissues." He said. "Besides, if you've seen the figures, it sells really well."

"Too horny teenagers." You said.

"Mayhaps, but hey, it's good." He replied.

Reward: Soldiers of Fortune has been publishing, and it sells well.

Now if only the last five pages were not dedicated to Sexy Porno photos.

-[X] More attempts to drum up a positive reputation for the country while doing mercenary work (but this time in Rhodesia!) Rolled: D100 => 83

It seems your reputation as a Warlord to help fellow Africans did not go unnoticed.

It seems rebel groups and revolutionaries all over the world want you to join them in overthrowing their oppressors.

And even in the UN, nations are calling your mercenaries peacekeepers. And even want to invite you to join the UN Assembly as a speaker.

Reward:

Your reputation has trended more to positive actions, and certain nations are happy that

Vassily was more worried about his family than getting to know you.

At least right now.

Failure.

Well. At least he hasn't sent spies assassins or a bounty yet. Unlike Russia and the US.

This turn is a real OOOF moment cause our dice must hate us
As you may see, your primary method (Military) has significantly fewer actions this turn.

So... you're going to need to start nation-building.
Well. At least he hasn't sent spies or a bounty yet. Unlike Russia and the US.
Or china.

But at this point, we can safely say we have secured the triangle.

Now we need to hold it, and build it up.

Turn 8: To Build a Better World:
-[X]Build Barracks: Your people need a place to stay. (Cost 5 Control) Rolled:D100 + 10 => 107+D100 + 10 => 36

Well, all the building went to the… Ehem, food productions.

Failure
Did you put the wrong combination of stuff here, or am I missing something? I see a crit on the dice and a Failure on the text.

Definitely agree on the nation building side of things. On the bright side holy crap we finally have positive social modifiers! I mean, with our "improved" failure range it's kind of like neutral but I will take it.

Are we supposed to be allowed to do Organizing the Companies and The Only Thing They Fear is You! again? those seem about as well done as we could do 'em.

just how many under 10 rolls were there? That was painful to look at
Lots.

The Magoose dice are cruel.
Did you put the wrong combination of stuff here, or am I missing something? I see a crit on the dice and a Failure on the text.
nope that was actually a mistake, my fault.
Are we supposed to be allowed to do Organizing the Companies and The Only Thing They Fear is You! again? those seem about as well done as we could do 'em.
No, those were taken out.
I don't know if you noticed but we HAVE BEEN TRYING! Your dice man, they don't want us to have food or water but are willing to give us a surprise army who needs those resources.
Indeed.

At least you have food now.

nope that was actually a mistake, my fault.

No, those were taken out.
Alright, thank you. Wait, so which is it, a failure or a single crit?
EDIT: Ok it's being updated right now, sorry for the impatience, you saying that it was "taken out" led me to believe you'd made all the tweaks you were going to.
As far as taking things out, some other thoughts:
Speak to the Communist Neighbor and A Council Of Nations seem redundant now that we own the whole Triangle
Orginizing(sic) the Companies is still on there as well.

So anyone got any ideas?
Working on it! Mostly gonna spam econ and R&D this turn, but not exclusively.

@Magoose couple more things: I think when the housing thing got flipped from a fail to a single crit we didn't get the Control back? Especially relevant with our Brilliant trait.

Also "River Connections and if Such irrigation is possible?" is still on there, so is that actually feasible if we roll it, counter to the text from our failure?

So the KGB are having second thoughts.

Good, maybe you will have some good contracts soon.

After they stop trying to kill you of course.

Eh, so the Americans tried to kill you.

KGB: We have lost Li Mia after the last attempt at her life, sigh... well get word out to keep a look out. Can't be to careful she can be anywhere.

CIA: Director, we lost sight of Li Mia after she vivisected a KGB agent with a teaspoon. We are looking all over for her!

At the UN building in New York speaking to all the world leaders Li Mia: Greetings Ladies and Gentleman *waves at china delegation* I am Li Mia *gasps* *someone faints in the back* *nervous chatter* I was INVITED here today to speak about something near and dear to my heart.
*whips out copy of Soldier of Fortune* this is the mercenary nations new world famous mercenary magazine! We rate and review ALL the mercs who are rated trustworthy by our strick.....*massive sales pitch*

It is rumored the CIA and KGB had to replace their top analysts after the event due to heart attacks.
