Day 41 Chapter 10

Finally, you get your first glimpse of the witch responsible for all of this. It floats down from the ceiling, bearing an extra-large television set with a single looping image on repeat. A gigantic, grotesque figure rising from the broken body of the person you love most, twisting and turning against a sky of burning gold and a backdrop of broken buildings as it reaches up towards the heavens with a height that grows ever more massive with each passing second. An image you've worked so hard to prevent, yet have failed to, again and again.

The end of the world, and the witch of Kaname Madoka.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.

At that most horrible of sights, you feel something within you snap. Time comes to a sudden halt, dragging you and Kirika into your world of frozen time. "Hey, big sis? We're killing this witch right now, so please help me shred it into little tiny pieces-"

"Okay, seriously, you're going to have a lot of explaining to do when we get back home, and-"

"I already said I'd tell you later." You don't mean to snap at Kirika; she's not trying to provoke you. Not the way this witch is. "I'm sorry," you say, sighing as you check your Soul Gem. No wonder you snapped at her. "I didn't mean to yell at you. I just..."

Kirika places a hand on your shoulder, saying to you as you cleanse your Soul Gem of curses "I get it. I mean, I don't really get it, but I get that whatever this witch is showing you is painful. Like, really painful. Hell, I know how bitchy I'd be in your shoes if it was Oriko I was seeing, so I won't hold it against ya." Your big sis claps you on the back, adding with a smile "But I totally will if you don't tell me what's going on after we're done here."

"Right," you say, nodding your head as you relish in the freeing sensation of a Soul Gem newly cleaned. "Now, let's take care of this witch, shall we?"

"You got any special way you wanna do this?"

You shake your head, and trace Isa runes in the air in front of the witch. "Nope."

If this witch hadn't inflamed you the way it did, you might have felt some modicum of sympathy for it as you allow time to return to normal. Might. You're sure there's worse ways the witch could have gone than to be skewered by endless spires of ice and torn to shreds by lengths of chain and claws, but for the torment this witch would have forced onto you - onto every one of your other teammates had you not put a stop to it when you did - the punishment is equivalent to the suffering.

Broken and defeated, the witch falls to the ground, and as the labyrinth fades you are left with only a single broken image, the kind you might see if you turned your TV off to quickly. On the broken television set, the image of Madoka's witch stares back at you, its soulless blank eyes fixed on you. It's the last image of the labyrinth you see before the labyrinth finally fades from existence, leaving behind only a single proof that a witch had ever been there.

You pick the Grief Seed up off the ground; not necessarily to keep it for yourself, but rather just for temporary safekeeping. You'll figure out who it should go to later. "Alright team, that's a wrap for tonight. You all did good work."

"But, we hardly did anything," Nagatsuki Miyuki says. "I know it was pretty much all on you for defeating the witch; the rest of us didn't really get a chance to do anything."

That's not true; Kirika helped you out a lot in terms of defeating the witch. But you can't say that. "We all put the work in to defeat the familiars. Without them, the witch lost the majority of its fighting ability."

"So now that we're done, let's all go and celebrate!" Kirika says, wrapping an arm around your shoulder as her voice rings with cheer. But her face says otherwise, and she leans in to whisper to you "You wanna get some ice cream on the way back? I know I didn't say it, but I appreciate you being concerned for me last night, and since you're looking a little down after what that witch showed you I thought I'd return the favour."

"Thank you," you say. "Some ice cream does sound nice." You can't help but smile as you, feeling a little like taking advantage of the situation, ask "Does this mean my big sis intends to treat me?"

"You dummy." Kirika directs her fist into your arm as gently as she can, saying "Course it does," before immediately changing her tone as she adds "But don't think this means I like having you for a sister or anything! I'm just being nice to you because you're one of Oriko's friends, that's all!" You shrug. Well, you win some, and you lose some, you think, as Kirika begrudgingly accepts the hug you give her in spite of her attitude.

It isn't just you getting ice cream this time, either. Kirika might have been the only one to get any last night, but tonight has been taxing on more than just yourself, and there are other members of your team deserving of some comfort food. After checking to make sure the ice cream here is suitable for her dietary restrictions, you pay for Assassin, and offer to pay for Berserker as well when Kirika says "So, hey, I've only got enough on me for you and me," but Berserker declines you.

"The offer is appreciated, but you need not trouble yourself on my account," Berserker says. "Besides, if I were to spill any on my suit, the mistress would be most displeased."

You look in Kirika's direction as Berserker declines your offer of ice cream, and say to her "Even if he doesn't want any ice cream, I'd still recommend checking on Berserker later to make sure he's alright. I figure you know more about what the witch was showing him than I do, so you're probably in a better position to make sure he's alright than I am."

"Relax, I wasn't planning on just ignoring the guy or anything. He..."
You aren't sure what brought on this pause of Kirika's, not until she says "Oh my god. The psychic lady at the faire last month was right."

"Come again?"

"Okay, so remember last month how me and Oriko went on a date to the festival in Downtown the same day as you and Pinkie did?"
How could you forget? That was your first date with Madoka in who-knows-how-long. "Oriko and I thought it would be funny to stop by this one booth to get our fortunes told; you know, because Oriko can see the future and this old lady clearly couldn't." You nod your head; you do, in fact, remember seeing the happy couple as they left the old lady's stand.

"Can you believe that old lady? Telling me that I'll 'meet the man of my dreams'? What a load of bull, right? A man... You're the only one for me, Oriko."

"Yes, but what of it? I seem to recall you saying that her fortunes were a 'load of bull' is that right?"
You also recall thinking, at the time, that you almost preferred to think of the pair as serial killers, rather than as a stereotypical sappy couple. Oh, how times have changed.

"Yeah, I thought that that too. I mean, I love Oriko; I wouldn't just leave her for a guy like that. Guys are gross; they've got... Thingies, and if a guy got me pregnant I know it'd make mom cry. But then I summoned Berserker, and it just hit me now that he'd kind of fit the bill. I mean, I get all kinds of glimpses into his past thanks to that whole dream cycle thing, right? So in a way, that old lady was right."

Nagatsuki Miyuki rolls her eyes as you and Kirika share a laugh at the latter's realisation. "You two are weird," she says. "I don't recall Koito-chan being so weird with Komaki-san..." There's a moment of silence as Nagatsuki Miyuki's voice fades. She shakes her head, turning away from you and Kirika as she says "Sorry. Forget I said anything. Let's just get going. I'm sure the others will want to hear our report."

You and the others follow Nagatsuki Miyuki's lead out of the sweets shop, with Kirika taking over once the journey becomes one of returning to the MIkuni mansion. "I... Kind of feel bad for her," Kirika says to you. "I mean, I know that she and Komaki were mean to Oriko, but at the same time... If I lost Oriko, I know I'd be just as upset myself."

You don't know if there's a way to cheer Nagatsuki Miyuki up. You too know what it feels like to have lost the person you loved; and even if you were more welcoming of the part of you that loved the person you had lost than she is, you know the pain doesn't go away overnight.

Or ever.

Hopefully this is the last short one for today. Not really sure what I'm looking for from the current vote, so feel free to give me whatever you think is appropriate. Also include whether we want to get ice cream or not.

We'll make sure to bring more friends.

[x] Get Ice cream
-[x] all of the ice cream
-[x] try and mentally prepare yourself.
--[x] You don't know what you'd do if the rest of the team takes this revelation as badly as your friends did.

We'll make sure to bring more friends.
Nah, we'll just have Homura bring a bento made by Archer for the Witch next time they encounter one another. Not even a Witch will be able to stand up to the might of Archer's cooking. :V

[X] Plan Big Sis 1, Friends 0
-[X] Go and get ice cream with your team, though be sure to order some for Berserker and Assassin as well
--[X] Make sure to avoid any ice cream flavors that use vanilla extract when getting Assassin's ice cream, as sometimes the extraction method for vanilla extract uses alcohol
--[X] Telepathically inform Kirika that she should probably check in on Berserker at some point in the future since he got quite a dose of what the Witch was doling out; just because their Servants are Heroes doesn't mean they aren't Human after all, and Kirika would know better than you about Berserker's trauma due to the dream cycle

-[X] Debriefing time
--[X] Witches that prey on the trauma of their victims continue to be horrible, despite them typically being relatively weak physically
---[X] "Good job, team" again; perhaps they should split up into teams of purely Puella Magi and Servants next time, depending on who's available

-[X] Stay behind after the debriefing to do the thing with Oriko and Kirika
--[X] Take out the string and connect everyone to it, and then time-stop; explain to Kirika - with Oriko's help - about how you're in a time-loop
---[X] If she asks, tell her truthfully that her and Oriko typically don't contract at all in most of your loops, least of all your original timeline; and before she asks, clarify that each loop is slightly different with this one being the most different with the inclusion of Servants and much more powerful Witches
----[X] No, none of your closeness with Oriko or Kirika is fabricated from other loops; in fact this is the first timeline in which you're even remotely positively associated with them, much less as close to them as you are now (*be a bit embarrassed while addressing this, as you genuinely kind of think of Kirika as a sister and Oriko as a close friend/companion now, somehow*)

Not sure if Homura would be aware of the whole "vanilla extract" part, however I'm sure that Assassin could bring it up telepathically using the information she got from the grail.

Hm, I wonder if Kirika will make a Groundhog Day reference or something like that when Homura's explaining things? 🤔

Since the hunt wasn't too overly long, and considering how early-ish they started it after school, I'd think it's be plausible that it's still before or around 7-ish PM (when Minako gets out of work).
By the way, SVS, don't feel like you have to make a whole event around each of Archer and Minako's outings (such as this one, since it'll probably be relatively brief in comparison to the others), you could just give us a synopsis whenever we're in Archer's POV or when he's telling Homura about it. :)

Forget Homura, I don't even know if Assassin would know about vanilla extract. That doesn't seem to be the kind of important information the Grail would impart to a servant, but even if it for some reason did, how would Homura know which ones use vanilla extract and which ones don't?

That would be an out-there reference for an American who was old enough to have seen Groundhog Day in theaters to be making in 2011, forget about a Japanese teenager who was born 2 or 3 years after it hit theaters. She won't be making the reference.

Nope. Travel time from the school to Oriko's place is over an hour, Homura and Kirika going shooting could have taken them 30 minutes to another hour depending, not including the time they'd spend cleaning their pistols afterwards, dinner was probably another hour, add in a few extra minutes to account for any rounding errors; even if the witch hunt took less than an hour, we're still ~4 hours from when school got out. Slight chance it's a little after 7 assuming everything went the fastest possible time, but it's probably more likely 8 or 8.30.

Well, to be fair, the kind of information Servants are granted by the Grail about the modern era varies wildly from useful to non-useful stuff. I like to think that the Grail prioritizes the most important stuff to the Servant along with anything else they'll need in order to navigate the modern era, as to not need to dump literally everything into a Servant's mind; in this case, this would derive from Assassin's religious needs which she would require additional information about in order to properly navigate the modern era (especially as a Servant who's trained as specialist in infiltration).

In any case, most ice cream/sweet shops will definitely be able to answer any questions about most wide-spread dietary restrictions, though even if this particular shop they're going to cannot it's relatively easy for a shopkeeper to quickly check (or remember) whether or not their stock was made with vanilla extract or not (which is disputed more so than just for religious reasons, due to the alcohol typically used to extract it).

Day 41 Chapter 11
[X] Plan Big Sis 1, Friends 0

"... So in conclusion, witches that attack the emotional traumas of their victims continue to be horrible, despite being typically weak against even a modest show of force." You doubt that what you and Kirika did to that witch constitutes "a modest show of force," but your point still stands. "I'm really hoping that the next witch I, or any of us for that matter, run into is one that's more... Conventional, if you will. Given the nature of our condition, I'd take a greater physical threat over another emotional threat any night."

A round of nodding heads pass through the Mikuni living room. "Well, I suppose that about wraps up another successful night of hunting," Tomoe-san says. "Good job, everyone."

"Perhaps tomorrow night, it might be nice for all of us to work together," Mikuni Oriko suggests, stroking a hand through the hair of her lover cuddled up beside her; you can almost hear Kirika purring like a content cat at Mikuni Oriko's touch. "If we can get everyone working together, it would give Nagatsuki-san a chance to work with all of us, while also giving Saber the chance to work with all of our servants."

"An excellent suggestion, Mikuni-san," Tomoe-san says. The blonde looks around the living room and, seeing no one else rising to speak, says "Then, if there's nothing else for any of us to add, I believe we can afford to call it a night." She smiles, directing her gaze to Mikuni Oriko and Kirika as she adds "I'd hate to keep you two from enjoying your nights together by entertaining us for longer than is necessary."

"That's very kind of you, Tomoe-san."

Despite her words, it does take Tomoe-san some time, and more than some amount of smalltalk with Mikuni Oriko, before she can finally pry herself away and say "Good night, everyone." Nagatsuki Miyuki, needing to return home before her parents find out she's left them, is quick to follow, leaving only you as the sole guest in the Mikuni mansion; and though you've long since made amends with the couple in this timeline, Kirika's staring face makes you feel as though you're prey that has wandered into the den of its predator.

"You promised you'd tell me."

Well, you'd hate to disappoint your big sis after all she's done to help you. "Was there something you needed, Akemi-san?" Mikuni Oriko asks, motioning for Lancer to bring another round of tea. Despite her words, you can tell she's well aware you have no intention of leaving so early.

"Actually, there's something I promised I'd tell Kirika," you say, your words causing the Kirika in question to sit upright. Mikuni Oriko nods, and you direct your attention to Kirika as you try to conjure up the strength to speak those words a second time in one day; and to think, just when you'd decided against saying anything to your teammates after how horribly your friends reacted. You hand Mikuni Orikp a piece of string, and instruct her "Tie this to yourself. I need to say this privately, and there's only one way I can do that."

Mikuni Oriko does as you instruct her to, and once she's connected herself to you you say "The truth is..." You sigh; as much as you'd like to, there's no turning back now. "The truth is, I'm from the future. A long time ago, I made my wish to redo my meeting with Madoka, and ever since then I've been stuck in a time loop. The only way for me to escape is to prevent her from making a contract and to defeat Walpurgisnacht, but no matter how many times I've tried I just can't do it."

Kirika stares back at you, the expression on her face an unclear one. Mikuni Oriko has had months to come to terms with the truth about your nature; but for Kirika, who's just hearing this now... No. You want to have faith that she'll believe you. "So, all this time... For as close as you've gotten to Oriko and I... That's just been something you knew was going to happen from the beginning? Us... Being sisters... Does any of that even matter to you if you were just going through the same motions you've done a hundred times now?"

"You're wrong!" You don't mean to yell. "Every timeline is a little bit different from the previous one. A lot of the time you and Mikuni Oriko don't contract, and our paths never end up crossing. The few times they do..." Just a month ago, you couldn't have imagined a timeline in which you became friends with Mikuni Oriko and Kirika; now, you're having a hard time dredging up the memories of the timelines when you weren't. "... Make no mistake, this is the first timeline that we've ever been this close in." Somehow, somewhere along the way you really have come to care for them, maybe even as much as the people you've known for a hundred timelines, and it's surprisingly hard for you to say something that should be so easy. "I really do enjoy having you as my big sis. It means a lot to me that we've been able to be this close when we never have been before."

It's faint, just enough that maybe you didn't even really see it, but the expression on Kirika's face softens just a bit. "So, when you say that each timeline is a little bit different, what do you mean?"

"It can mean a lot of different things, depending on the timeline. Sometimes Sayaka contracts. Sometimes Hitomi, or Tomoe-san, or Kyouko is dead by now. Sometimes I'm forced to do bad things to the people I care about. Sometimes I only care about that person after I've already done bad things to them." You breathe hard, shaking the number of times you've had to hurt the people you care about from your mind. "The biggest difference between this timeline and all the others is the inclusion of servants. That's not something I've ever encountered before, and it's ended up changing things pretty radically for me."

If Archer weren't here, you never would have had someone encouraging you to be proactive in forming relationships. You would have likely made another bad first impression on your friends. You wouldn't have had the chance to approach Tomoe-san as an ally against a common threat. You never would have been able to turn that threat into an ally. Without Archer meeting Kure Minako, you and Kirika would have no reason to get closer to one another. You wouldn't have had a reason to think of her as her own person; or as your sister. Without Archer, you'd be all alone, and this timeline would have just played out the way it always does.

"Well, there's that, but the witches of this timeline are also significantly stronger than they've ever been. The puella magi too, actually."

"Is that good, or bad?" Kirika asks. Mikuni Oriko smiles, giving her lover's hand a squeeze as it seems that Kirika is coming around to your words.

"I'd say it's a little of both," you respond. "On the one hand, stronger witches means that a single Grief Seed is less of a reward than it would be in other timelines, but to make up for it... Well, I'll use you and Mikuni Oriko as examples. The Mikuni Orikos of those other timelines often had trouble controlling their precognition, and didn't have nearly as much mana or as much control over their drones as the Mikuni Oriko sitting next to you; and the other Kure Kirikas weren't able to enter timestop, nor could they do as much with their claws as you can. Actually, if the two of you fought the yous of previous timelines, I'd say the two of you would easily win against the others; you're both just that much stronger." You'll say nothing about those other Kirikas turning into witches to give their Mikuni Orikos a more powerful ally. You'd hate to lose your big sis like that, and you'd hate to see Mikuni Oriko fall into despair over the loss of her lover.

"That's so cool!" Kirika exclaims. That's good, you think, finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. She doesn't hate you for what you've told her. "Hey, hey, can you tell me more about how much better my Oriko is from all those other Orikos?"

Mikuni Oriko brings a hand up to cover her mouth as she laughs. "But dearest, they're all me, aren't they?"

"Maybe, but all those other Orikos are another Kirika's Oriko!" Kirika wraps her arms around Mikuni Oriko, kissing her as she says "But you're my Oriko, so that makes you the most most special Oriko of all!"

We almost lost this one. Kirika got lower than she needed to on her initial role, but managed to bring it back around and even come out of it enthusiastic; and don't forget to check out the additions made to 41-10 while you're checking this one out.

Well, at least we know that KirikaDice isn't anywhere near as bad as SayakaDice; good to know. :)

Also turning the offer of her staying the night into a proper slumber party; Archer will understand, his Eye of the Mind (True) wil clue him into the fact that he does not want to be there tonight, unless he wants to be subjected to the slumber party activities listed above. :V

With this, Projection will hit the 15 practice sessions mark; I wonder what will change when she hits that tier (as I hadn't expanded upon that myself unlike with Reinforcement). Perhaps Homura will be able to project multiple things at once now, and maybe further away from her body? It'll probably also be easier for her to project things like her Isa rune onto disposable projections. 🤔

As a refresher:
5 could be basic usage and competency, 10 could be intermediate usage which is viable for heat-of-the-moment combat, 15 being on the level of a specialist that can do some crazier stuff with it
EDIT: Oh, can't forget about the reduced Projection time, possibly allowing a more rapid fire function to her bow and arrows (perhaps even volleys?). Also, since she's Tracing a la Archer, she could probably also start to learn how to project things with velocity to shoot them off, or do that "Trace Bullet" thing where she can set a blueprint and even more rapidly fire things.

Is this also excluding Berserker and/or Lancer? To where are they being kicked out?

Oh boy. What are you expecting me to give you of this, and what are you expecting for Archer to find?

We've been using Projection almost exclusively to make our bow (and arrows, until we figured out how to make arrows from frozen water molecules). What sort of crazier stuff are you expecting for us to be able to do with it now, and how much of that are we likely to use over just Projecting our bow and arrows?

Berserker finally gets some freetime and R&R to do stuff, while Lancer continues to maid and be the token adult (or they could both be the token parents that do stuff in another room while the kids have their fun).

Just some general statistics like how Witch-infested the city is, whether or not there's active Puella Magi according to his senses or Clairvoyance, possibly encountering the Incubator, etc. Or anything else weird that's going on, I suppose. Who knows, maybe Archer will hunt a Witch while he's there?

Read my edit above. Homura could likely learn how to rapid fire her projected arrows to create volleys of Isa arrows, much like Archer shoots his regular arrows in F/SN (or the UBW anime if you want to see how it looks like). She could also start learning how to project things with velocity to shoot over her shoulders, and other more esoteric functions.

I feel like we're really going to have to make it up to our friends after this, considering how well everyone that wasn't them has taken the news. And we should probably spend some time with Mami and Kyouko as well, just for good measure. Just saying. I think we've ended up spending more of our time with Oriko and Kirika than even Madoka, at this point.

It has felt like we've been too chummy lately. I'm not saying we can't be like that, it's just feels like we're going too fast. The part of the quote I highlighted in particular really gets me. I think we can slip in one or two events with Madoka before Gachaisnacht.

Would it be weird for me to think this is a bit OOC? It's very, uhh, forward (?) for Homura? Too normal? Though we've probably done this kind of stuff several times already in votes and I don't remember, so I guess that's ok.

TBH, I would want to save a family sleepover for another day, but this-
you'd be giving Sayaka and Hitomi their space if you went to school with Kirika instead
seems good

I'm tempted to wonder whether I've made Oriko and Kirika too likeable now that they're no longer serial killers. It's barely been a month and yet they're already ranked as highly on our affection meter as people we've known for 100 lifetimes.

We've come close to a "normal" sleepover three times before, not counting staying at Oriko's beach house. There was the first night after school, where Madoka, Sayaka, and Hitomi came over to our apartment after our breakdown, but they left without staying the night. Then there was a night where we had Madoka and Hitomi stay the night, but not Sayaka, though that got kind of awkward towards the end. Then there was the night before Kirika's legs had healed that the Quintet spent the night at Mami's apartment, but that was more of a prolonged team get-together than a "sleepover with friends".

Day 41 Chapter 12
[X] Enetious

"... And so, they ended up asking me if I wanted to stay the night. That way, I could go to school with Kirika tomorrow and give Sayaka and Hitomi their space."

You'll admit to some lingering trepidation about letting Homura stay the night at the Mikuni residence, but by now those two have proven themselves to be much more than the single-minded monsters you had thought them as at first. Besides, if everyone else is angling to give this whole 'family' thing a try, the least you can do is set your worries aside and accept that they've changed. Love the sinner, hate the sin, right; That's how that goes?

"... But, that still doesn't explain what you and Kure Minako are doing here."

"Well, since you were gone, I thought it might be fun to pick Minako up from work and take her out for a bit," you say to Homura, giving the woman beside you a gentle squeeze which she more than appreciates. "Since Mikuni's place isn't too terribly far from where we were, Minako thought it would be nice to drop in and say hi to Kirika. Then we find out that you're here too."

Beside you, Minako plants her hands on her hips, staring down her daughter as she asks "You've been doing your schoolwork, right?" When a faintly mumbled "Yes" from Kirika isn't good enough, Minako repeats herself, her "Right?" now in a much harsher tone.

Kirika awkwardly shuffles her feet and pouts, looking away from Minako as she responds "Yes mommy."

Kirika's response earns her a smile from her mother, and Minako bends down to give her daughter a hug. "That's my little pumpkin. Be good for Oriko, you hear?"

"Don't worry, Minako-san," Mikuni says, stepping in for her lover. "I'm doing my best to make sure Kirika has enough time for both work and play." A guilty expression passes over Mikuni's face as she adds "I would have done so sooner, if Kirika had only told me your original conditions for letting her live with me. I'm sorry for the trouble she's caused you."

"Don't worry about it." You stand back as Minako breaks form her hug with her daughter. "You're young, things like this happen," she says. "Just make sure you're not doing anything I wouldn't approve of." You hope the expression on Mikuni's face means she's still too embarrassed by adult things to have been thinking of doing that, and not that she and Kirika were thinking of doing that.

"So, what were the three of you planning on doing, then?"

"I dunno, girl stuff?" Kirika responds. "Come on mom, you must have had some girl friends you'd hang out with back then."

"Actually..."

"I don't think any of us ever thought about what we were going to do," Homura says, looking between herself, Kirika, and Mikuni. "I assume at some point we'll do more practice with our magic, but aside from that..." She shrugs, saying "We didn't really have a plan for this, after all. We just kind of... Happened, into me spending the night. Perhaps you'd like to join us?"

"Nah, that's alright," Minako says. "Two adults hanging out at their daughters' slumber party? We'd just be a drag." You've grown well accustomed to that glint in Minako's eyes, so it comes as no surprise to you when she says "Besides, Archer and I have plans of our own. Thank you for the invite, though; I hope you have fun."

Minako's idea of plans are certainly different from your own; but you'll break the news to her gently that you can't stay the night. As the two of you turn to leave, you make sure to give Homura a mental nudge "I figure Assassin is with you," as you hand off to her a trio of rings you'd covertly throw together awhile back. "Wouldn't want her to accidentally poison your sister or her girlfriend, would you?"

"Thank you."

You know well enough by now to know exactly what to expect when it's just you and Minako by yourselves. She manages to keep her composure on the walk from the mansion to the train station and for the length of the train ride back into Mitakihara, but the moment the two of you are within spitting distance of her apartment that woman is all over you, hanging off your arm, touching you, sneaking in quick kisses when she thinks her creepy neighbor might be watching; things like that. You're used to it by now, and you don't want to fault her for her behaviour.

She's still young, and she's eager to revisit the passionate youth she lost to her ex-husband now that she's found someone who makes her happy.

You don't begrudge her a few more passionate embraces as she closes the door to her apartment, but once she asks "So... Is tonight going to be the night?" all bets are off.

"Sorry," you say. "I know you're eager, but I've got other business I need to take care of." You give her one last kiss as you break from her embrace, saying "And you've got work tomorrow. I'd hate to keep you up all night and make you late for your first shift tomorrow."

Minako pouts as you and she say your goodbyes, but you know it's for the best to leave things where they are for now. If you give in to her wiles only to fall in battle against Walpurgisnacht... Besides, you really do have business to take care of tonight. "Now, let's see," you say to yourself, slipping out of your civilian attire as the night air envelops you. "Asunaro... What direction is Asunaro in?"

You aren't sure what to expect from the nearby city named by Caster as the place where the Incubator has fled; something similar to Mitakihara, perhaps? What you weren't expecting to find is Caster himself. "Archer, what a pleasant surprise," Caster says to you as you join him on the roof of one of Asunaro's taller buildings.

"Likewise," you say in return. "I can't say I was expecting you to come check the city out as well. What brings you here?" But Caster merely smiles at your question. Knowing him, he's either here because he saw that you'd be here, or he spoke up about this place in order to bring you here when he already had plans to be here. "Alright then, keep your secrets." You cross your arms as the two of you look out at the city; it's a modest but modern city, lacking the bleeding-edge of Mitakihara or the simple yet extravagant lines of Shirome to cut an image all its own. "What are we looking at here?"

One possible answer to that question you have been able to feel for yourself since the moment you arrived. The overwhelming fog of negative karma that had been so oppressive over Mitakihara when you first arrived has long since faded, leaving only faint echoes in the few places where witches still dare to hatch; but here in Asunaro, you can feel that crushing pressure renewed. The Incubator works fast when it sets its scheming little mind to it, you guess.

"The city is thick with witches," Caster says, only confirming your initial suspicions. "There are two... No, three puella magi currently operating here, though I am doubtful any of them would be in a position to grant our masters aide."

"Why is that?"

"One is engaged in a fierce rivalry with the other... Two, and should either of them leave their territory to come to our aide, the other would without hesitation snatch that territory for themselves. For fledglings such as themselves, the loss of territory must be a greater damnation than to see a neighboring city they have no stake in destroyed."

"That's a shame," you say. With how little time still remains until Walpurgisnacht, you didn't think it would be possible to integrate any new girls into Homura's team; but it never hurts to try if the potential reward is more allies. "But I take it that means the Incubator is definitely here, then, if there's this many witches and three active puella magi in the city." Caster nods his head.

----[X] a witch?
-----[X] Kill it with fire; either you could give it's Grief Seed to your daughter as a gift, or you could use it as a bartering tool if you run into any of the local puella magi

----[X] a puella magi?
-----[X] Try to engage them in polite conversation, and attempt to figure out the situation between the puella magi here
------[X] What are their names, where are there territories (obviously so that you could avoid them while you're here, of course /s), informing them that they should be wary of the Incubator since it likely planted the first Witches here in Asunaro in the first place or had encouraged their growth somehow so that it could contract puella magi locally (and also tell them how it generally operates, such as how it doesn't outright lie aside from using lies of omission)
------[X] If they had the choice of giving up their territorial ways/disputes between other puella magi in exchange for not having to worry about Grief costs ever again, would they take it? Hypothetically of course.
-----[X] Depending on the overall situation, use a Grief Seed to placate one or more puella magi you come across if you have any

----[X] the Incubator?
-----[X] If it shows up while you're explaining things to any puella magi you come across and makes a remark about you talking about it, inform it that you're simply giving them information that you deem important that it may have otherwise not have deemed important itself - different values and all that
-----[X] See what happens when the Incubator and Caster interact with one another; this is sure to be good
-----[X] So, can it tell you two what it's been up to lately? Any reason it chose Asunaro in particular? What about Madoka; you've heard that it's only been watching Madoka lately and not really communicating with her.
-----[X] What are it's thoughts on the Elsa Maria situation that recently occured in Mitakihara?

Hey, if there's anything significant about Caster being here, it's that he loves a good adventure (even when it's not his own, he tends to butt into others' adventures since relinquishing his younger self's role and becoming King). Heck, he just loves travelling in general - but not to the extent that he'd abandon his duties to his people (or Master in this case).

Hm, this whole trip is a lot more interactive than I was expecting it to be (not that that's a bad thing, though it consequently resulted in a longer vote from me). :)
