Day 5 Chapter 5
[x] Games
-[x] Shooting gallery
[x] Amusements
-[x] Open-air movie theater
[x] Snacks
-[x] Cotton candy

There's lots of things to do at the culture fest, and you've probably never done a single one before. You've stepped out of your comfortable routine and into something completely new... And for the first time in forever, you're okay with that. This... All of this; being with Madoka, being able to see her relaxing, having fun like a normal girl without having to worry about the world of the puella magi... This is what you always wanted for her. This is what you've been fighting for.

Still, being okay with your enjoyment of this happy moment does nothing to change the fact that you've swam into uncharted waters, and it isn't until Madoka's attentions are drawn to the shelves full of stuffed animals at the shooting gallery that you even have a passing idea of where to start. But once you see her gaze focus in on those stuffed animals, you know what you have to do.

Before Madoka can even say anything, you've dropped 500¥ down on the counter and taken the air rifle into your hands. It's light; much lighter than the Howa rifle you've grown accustomed to using. But you have a plan. It was 500¥ for three shots, and with as much practice as you've had using firearms, three shots is all you'll need.

Your first shot is spent to acclimate your body to the way the rifle handles. It goes wildly off the mark, but that was what you expected to happen. Now that you know what you're dealing with, the other two shots are easy enough to make blindfolded. Your second and third shots hit the target dead-on. "Wow, you're really good at this, Homura-chan," Madoka says, watching your performance with the same look of wonderment that you used to wear watching her. "Have you done this before?"

You can't tell her the truth. She wouldn't understand. "No, but it's relatively easy once you get the hang of it." You motion for her to come in a little closer. "Do you see how there's a block with a notch here in the back, and a peg here in front? All you have to do is line the two up over your target, take steady breaths, and pull the trigger when you're ready. Would you like to give it a try?"

"Sure." You can sense a bit of hesitation in Madoka's voice, but she takes the rifle from you all the same, and you give the booth operator another 500¥. "I've never done this before either, so could you maybe help me?"

"Of course." You position yourself behind Madoka, and lean in over her shoulder. It's a good thing that you're taller than her, or else this would be rather difficult. Carefully, you help her bring the rifle into position on her shoulder, and hold her while she keeps it steady. You're so close. You can feel her heart racing as you press yourself against her back, and you can feel your own heart racing to match hers. "Now, just line up the sights the way I told you to. Easy, steady, control your breathing... Don't worry Madoka, I've got you. Now, whenever you're ready, pull the trigger."

She does. Once, twice, thrice. All three rounds hit the target. You can hardly believe it, but the smile on both your faces can't hide the truth. "You did great, Madoka."

"Wehihihi, only because I had Homura-chan helping me."

"if'n I'm not interruptin' nothing," the booth operator says, his thick Kansai accent making it somewhat difficult to understand his words. "Ya both won yerself a prize. What'll it be?"

You look to Madoka; all of this was for her, so it's only natural that you let her pick. "Well? Which one would you like, Madoka?"

Madoka thinks for a moment, before pointing to a fluffy white bird. "That one. I had a pet myna bird when I was little. I was so sad when it died, but that one reminds me of her."

"In that case, I'll take the bird." The booth operator takes the bird off the shelf and hands it to you. You immediately hand it to Madoka. She happily takes the bird, but looks on you with sad, puppy-dog eyes.

"What about you, Homura-chan? Don't you want a prize too?"

You shake your head. "As long as you're happy, that's all that matters to me."

"In that case, I want Homura-chan to get her prize. That's what would make me happy." She points to a black bird. "That one. Give that one to Homura-chan," she says to the booth operator. He shrugs, but he got his money, so moments later you find yourself the owner of a stuffed bird, courtesy of Madoka. "There. Now we match."

You and Madoka put your birds away in your bags and continue on. Soon, you find yourselves ensconced in the aroma of food. Sweets and salty snacks are found in abundance, and even though you just ate you find that your mouth has begun to salivate at the thought of something sugary and sweet. You turn to Madoka and ask her "Would you like to get something to snack on while we walk?"

She nods. "Let's get a cotton candy!" And so you do; one cone of the spun pink sugar-floss for each of you. It's so sweet, and the pink colouring evokes the image of someone even sweeter. She's right beside you, enjoying her own cotton candy.

Along your travels, you pass by a stand labeled "Fortunes Told, 100¥ each" being manned by an elderly lady. Exiting the booth you see a pair of familiar faces, holding hands much as you and Madoka are doing. Mikuni Oriko glances your way, but says nothing. Beside her, you hear Kure Kirika making conversation. "Can you believe that old lady? Telling me that I'll 'meet the man of my dreams'? What a load of bull, right?" She goes to kiss Oriko, and you turn away, hoping to hide your blush from Madoka. "A man... You're the only one for me, Oriko."

You almost think that you prefer them as serial killers than as a stereotypically sappy couple. You decide to hurry Madoka along. You recall her mentioning that someone last year was running screenings of old movies, so you get in your head to look for them. It takes you a little while, but after some searching, you and Madoka sit down to join the just-started screening of Spirited Away.

By the time the movie is over, you've been reduced to tears. The not-quite-romance between Chihiro and Haku reminds you more painfully than you realized of your own love for Madoka; and how, just as Haku had forgotten Chihiro, so too can Madoka no longer remember everything that she's done for you. Madoka - this Madoka - doesn't seem at all bothered by your tears, by your weakness. She's just sitting there beside you, comforting you. But despite your tears you really are enjoying yourself, and with the next showing starting in a few minutes, you'd like to stay out a little longer. But, the sun has already begun its descent, and soon it will be dark, and then the witches will be out in full.

Witches you lack the ability to harm.

What do you do?

It will be getting dark soon, and the witches will soon be out in force. You know you should get Madoka home to safety, but you're having so much... Fun, and you really don't want today to end... What to do... Well, if you can't decide, then it's up to Madoka to give you guidance. "It's getting late. Would you like to head home now, or-"

"Can we stay out just a little longer, Homura-chan? Maybe one more movie? Or could hang out in the park for a little after we're done? I'm..." Madoka starts to tear up a little herself. "I'm just having so much fun with you today, and I don't want it to end just yet..."

You sigh, smiling as you wipe away Madoka's tears. "Of course we can. One more movie, then we'll go drop our things off at your place and hang out in the park together for awhile." You answer brings a smile to Madoka's face, and the two of you quickly duck out for a drink before the next showing begins.

You aren't sure if Mikuni Oriko and Kure Kirika have been following you this entire day, or whether their own date plans just happened to coincidentally match your own, but they were in the theater seating as well. At least they aren't going after Madoka.

When the movie ends, you and Madoka reluctantly leave the theater seating and, hand in hand, walk back to the train station. You would be content to enjoy Madoka's company in silence, but she's still got things to say. That's fine. "So, which movie did you prefer, Homura-chan?"

"Spirited Away," is your immediate reply. Given the large number of children present at the festival, you're probably right in your assumption that the selection of movies was meant for an all-ages crowd, but... Just how many Pokemon movies are there, anyway? You aren't sure; the first games had already been out for a year when you were born, and so you never had the chance to be swept up in the craze. "I never really cared much for Pokemon growing up, so I found it hard to follow along."

"Me too," Madoka replies. "I know Sayaka-chan still plays the games with her mom whenever a new one comes out, but I could never bring myself to like them. It's just not fair, capturing wild animals and forcing them to fight! I don't like it!" You give Madoka's hand a squeeze, and that seems to calm her down.

"You don't have to like it if you don't want to, Madoka. That's perfectly acceptable."

"You're so smart, Homura-chan. I wish I was as smart as you..."

"You are perfectly intelligent in your own way, Madoka. That's what makes you unique, and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise."

It's well after dinner by the time you and Madoka return home, but between her rather large lunch, the cotton candy, and the french fries you both had as you were leaving the festival, her stomach seems to be keeping itself under control. Maybe not, but if she's hungry she hasn't said anything. You both drop your things off at her house, and you wait patiently outside while Kaname Junko speaks to her daughter for a bit. But once they've finished, the two of you head to the park to relax after a long day of fun. There's still a little light left in the sky, so you've both decided that watching the sunset will be a perfect way to end your date.

But, as the sun creeps lower, you notice a concerned look growing on Madoka's face. At first, you're sure that she just doesn't want today to end, but when at last the sun has set, the question she asks is far from anything you had been expecting. "Homura-chan... Do we... Do we know each other from somewhere else?"

You aren't quite sure what Madoka means, but before you can ask for clarification she continues. "Even though we've only known each other for a few days, something about you feels really familiar, like we've known each other for a really long time. And... I had a dream, the night before you transferred in. I never said anything to Sayaka-chan or Hitomi-chan because I thought they'd laugh at me, but... In my dream, I saw you. And, that hasn't been the only time. Every night since then, I've dreamed of nothing but you. Sometimes, you look like yourself, but you're cold towards me and are really scary. And then, other times you look so different... Your eyes are softer and you're wearing glasses, and your hair is in braids, but I can tell that it's you because you still act like Homura-chan."

You can feel your heart stop at her words. Has she... Has Madoka... Have the threads of your multitudinous loops begun to overlap? Could what she thinks are dreams actually be her memories of previous timelines? Or, is this all just a coincidence, and there's actually a completely logical explanation for all of this that doesn't involve your many failed timelines converging on one another... You doubt it; what other explanation could there possibly be?

"I... I'm worried, Homura-chan." You can see tears forming in Madoka's eyes, and her hands clench as she looks away from you guiltily. "I'm worried that I've had such a precious friend this whole time, but that I had forgotten about her when she needed me most..."

Do you
[ ] Pretend you don't know what she's talking about, and try to change the subject

I'll be changing perspectives to Archer just as soon as we're in a good spot to do so, so sit tight and don't worry.

Nope nope nope nope, I'm not touching this

Would it be easier to touch it if I gave you a 10-foot pole?

Man, every quest I've been in telling the truth has ended up absolutely disastrous, but this is Madoka we're talking....

If you're stuck and can't think of why your choice is a good one, do what I do and try to put the logic behind your choice into words. If you can't, it's probably not the best choice.

She'll find out from someone eventually, it's best if it's from us.

The first conman
Opulence and splendour were the words best-suited to describe the grand palace of Gilgamesh, the two-thirds divine King of Uruk in Sumer. Tapestries of scarlet and azure hung over decorations of gold-inlaid sandstone, treasures of craftsmanship unseen by modern eyes filled every unoccupied room, and scores of both women and men filled the harems of the Golden King. Truly, the life of Gilgamesh was one blessed beyond compare, then and now.

At yet, at the moment, Gilgamesh the King was not content to lounge in splendour, nor recline with his treasures and prostitutes. Nay, not even the comfort of his friend Enkidu was balm enough to soothe the wounds that troubled him on this day. The King say upon his golden throne, cradling his throbbing head in his hands as he took a moment's break from the tedium of work. Dozens of stone tablets lay all around his throne, and more kept pouring in, hour after hour.

"My King, I am afraid I must bear unto you bad news..." Siduri, faithful servant to the King, held in her hands another tablet of rather large size and, judging by the strain with which she held it, weight. "It is regarding-"

"If you value your life, Siduri, then you shall not finish that sentence if the subject of that tablet is another complaint against Ea-nasir," came the King's swift reply. The tablet in his hands he tossed aside, letting it break against the column where it struck. "I have heard more than enough about that charlatan, more than even I, the King, can stomach for one lifetime."

"But my King, something must be done about him. This tablet makes close to one-hundred complaints in just this week alone. The people grow tiresome of his crookedness, such that he has begun to look to other cities in which to perform his dishonest bargaining. Even now, complaints regarding him come in from the neighboring cities."

"Siduri, my task in this life is to shepherd the people of this earth through their trials, not to solve their petty individual problems for them. If Ea-nasir continues to be a nuisance to others, then it is the responsibility of those whom he has wronged to seek their solution. I cannot be responsible for hand-holding every man, woman, and child in my purview."

"But this is not merely the problems of small individuals, my King. This has become a matter concerning all of the kingdom."

"The kingdom is in an uproar over a thieving charlatan and conman. If that is all it takes to bring mankind to their knees begging for aid, then even without my guidance they will fall behind."

"But my King, Gilgamesh-"

"-Gilgamesh, I asked what you were thinking about."

The words of his master brought Gilgamesh out of his musings, and back into reality. When again he looked at his surroundings, the opulence of his palace, the overburdening piles of tablets, and his faithful assistant Siduri, had all ceased to exist. If Gilgamesh was the first hero, then truly, Ea-nasir was the first conman. However, it did Gilgamesh no good to dwell his thoughts on a man who had ceased to be a concern thousands of years ago.

And so, quickly dispelling from his mind any lasting thoughts of that memory, Gilgamesh turned to his master, replying to her "I was merely thinking about the past, master Tomoe. Nothing more."

Fuck it

-[X] Tell her the truth
-[X] No, really, the actual truth, not some half-truth made up on the spot

Time to sway to the masses, I regret nothing.

Miki Sayaka, Disney Princess
Sayaka had been stalking - no, not stalking, she reminded herself. Stalking is what creepy people do - the date of her best friend and their romantic interest ever since they had first set off on their journey. Somehow, Hitomi had gotten dragged along with her, against her vociferous protesting. Their friends deserved to have their date in peace, she argued, but Sayaka wasn't having any of it.

Hitomi secretly suspected that Madoka's mother had put Sayaka up to this, but she would never say anything.

From their hand-holding all the way from Madoka's house to the mall, to the kiosk where Madoka purchased a phone for Homura, to their shopping spree - Sayaka had barely been able to control her inner fangirl when she saw Homura drag Madoka into the changing room stall - their fancy lunch date, and the entirety of their culture festival adventure, Sayaka had been there to spy on them for the entire day, and of course, Hitomi had been dragged along with her for the entire day.

And now, Sayaka's many hours of stalking - no, not stalking; stalking is what creepy people do - had finally led her and Hitomi to hide behind bushes in the park as they watched Madoka and Homura watch the sunset. And still, despite that, Sayaka was unsatisfied.

"Geez, when are they going to kiss?" she complained, as quietly as she possibly could. "We've been following them all day and we still haven't seen them kiss."

"Sayaka-san, perhaps it's best that we let them be," responded Hitomi, ever the voice of reason. "Besides, they probably already kissed, when Akemi-san dragged Madoka-san into the changing room."

"Yeah, but that doesn't count. I want to see them kiss."

"You mean, you want to live vicariously through their romance because you still haven't worked up the courage to ask out Kamijou-kun."

"Well duh Hitomi. Besides, I already said I'd confess to him as soon as his arm's healed and he can play again."

But look! There's movement from the quarry! Sayaka, binoculars in hand - because what good is stalking without binoculars? - peered in on the pair as their faces drew closer. She smiled. "I can see what's happening,"

Hitomi gave Ssayaka a look, responding to her rather obvious statement with "Well, yes, because you brought binoculars."

"And they don't have a clue."

"They're on a date, Sayaka-san. I'm fairly certain they know precisely what they're getting into."

"They'll fall in love, and here's the bottom line- Our quartet's down to two."

"I don't think it works like that."

"The sweet caress of twilight; there's magic everywhere,"

"Oh, no, you're going to start singing, aren't you? Please don't, Sayaka-san, they'll hear you."

"And with all this romantic atmosphere, disaster's in the air!"

"Oh dear..."

"Can you feel the love tonight? The peace the evening brings? The world, for once, in perfect harmony, with all it's living things!"

Hitomi could do nothing but sit there, a look of utter shame coating her face as she watched Sayaka singing Disney. She knew that Madoka and Homura would catch them, and she really didn't want to be there when that happened. But, she couldn't just leave Sayaka to face that fate by herself, and so she stayed. But, little did either of them know, Madoka and Homura were having their own... Internal troubles.

Day 5 Chapter 7
[X] Tell her the truth
-[X] No, really, the actual truth, not some half-truth made up on the spot

"I... I'm worried, Homura-chan." You can see tears forming in Madoka's eyes, and her hands clench as she looks away from you guiltily. "I'm worried that I've had such a precious friend this whole time, but that I had forgotten about her when she needed me most..."

You don't know how to respond to her words. This is... Unprecedented. Never before has any Madoka displayed an inkling that the timeline of their present was anything but the only timeline to have ever existed. You had wanted to spare Madoka from the truth of your time traveling, but now... Now you aren't sure what the right course of action is.

No, that isn't true. Madoka is crying, and if Madoka is crying there is always something you can do to calm her down. You wrap your arms around her, tightly, and say to her "There's no need to cry, Madoka." It takes a little while for her to dry her tears, but you don't release her from your embrace until she has. Your faces are so close now; close enough that were you of a mind to take advantage of Madoka in this emotionally vulnerable state, you could kiss her with no chance of her stopping you.

But you don't; you can't. Madoka may have accepted your date, but you don't have the right to foist yourself or your desires on her like that.

But... Should you tell her? Is that the right decision? There are so many things to tell her; about everything you've gone through, the things you've had to do, all for her sake. All to keep her happy, and alive. All for her sake. But, you don't know if you can, if your words can reach her now. If you tell her, before she's even had the chance to understand what it means to be a puella magi, to understand the reality of that world and why you had no choice but to do for her what you have... You know that she would turn away from you, that she would never speak to you again.

That she would think you were crazy.

But then again, aren't you crazy?

How many times can a person break before it becomes impossible to put them back together?

No. Madoka deserves to know the truth. The truth can protect her, can keep her safe even when you can't. You just have to frame your words properly and you know she'll understand. And even if she doesn't, it doesn't matter if she rejects you afterwards, as long as she is safe.

"Madoka..." You transition your hands to her shoulders, gazing into her eyes. By the light of the moon, her eyes look like the most beautiful gemstones you've ever seen... They look like her Soul Gem. "I... I have something very important I need to tell you, but..."

Madoka's face flashes with concern as she asks "But what, Homura-chan? Please, you can tell me anything and I'll listen, I promise."

"... I'm sorry, Madoka. I don't know any other way to say this, but... The truth is-"

You never have time to finish your sentence. Just as you had finished steeling your body in preparation for those words, you hear a rustling sound coming from the bushes. Your head spins around like a top, eyes locked on the offending shrubbery. Have Mikuni Oriko and Kure Kirika finally decided to come for Madoka? Have they sent their servant after you? Is it the Incubator, finally making contact with Madoka? You break from Madoka and approach the bush with caution.

Instead of an enemy, you pull Miki Sayaka and Shizuki Hitomi out from behind the bushes. You stare at the both of them, and while Shizuki Hitomi at least has the common decency to look guilty for her actions, Miki Sayaka displays nothing of the sort. Her usual cocksure smile remains plastered on her face even as she says "So... How's the date going?"

You cannot believe Miki Sayaka. At all. Ever. "I told you we should have left them alone," Hitomi says to her; at least Hitomi remains sensible, even after committing such a senseless and inconsiderate action as to spy on your date with Madoka. "The least you could do is look ashamed at having been caught, you know."

"Homura-chan, what's going on?" Madoka rushes over to your side, drawn by the commotion. When she sees her friends, the dawning truth colours her face an ugly shade of disappointment. "Sayaka-chan... Hitomi-chan... Why? Why would you want to spy on Homura-chan like this?"

"Geez, sorry Madoka..." Yes, you'll apologize to Madoka if you know what's good for you, you stupid blueberry. "I just wanted to, you know, make sure you were having fun, and that Homura was treating you right... I guess I really screwed up this time, didn't I?"

"I tried to tell her not to, Madoka-san, but she wouldn't listen. Still... I admit that for my own part I still chose to follow along with her. I am truly sorry for interrupting your date, Madoka-san, Akemi-san." Hitomi bows deeply, and for a split-second you almost feel bad for her. She's clearly done something which she felt strongly against, and if nothing else you can sympathize with the hurt a person feels from such actions.

So naturally, something else just had to happen to make this already-ruined moment even worse, and it comes when you hear Madoka say "Homura-chan, look- Fairies!"

Your eyes are drawn in the direction that her finger is pointed. You don't see any fairies... Wait. No, no, no, no, no. "Hey, I didn't know they had guys out here doing landscaping this late at night," says Sayaka, clearly staring at the same thing. Those aren't the gardeners. True they often carry gardening shears, but you know of no mortal gardeners with butterfly wings for legs and a mustachioed cotton ball for a head.

I know it looks like I'm just trying to weasel out of telling Madoka the truth, but actually the Sayaka interrupt was slated to happen no matter what you picked. Sorry to deceive you like that, but you were actually secretly voting on what would happen after the interrupt, and it looks like you chose Gertrud.

Hmmmm...Intresting.

[X] (After previous posts.) Archer! If you can hear me Homura and her friends are caught by a witch you need to hurry and fast.

Can we boost him with the counter force? Or Provide Homura with the counter force?

Unfortunately no. I've already got all the stats for the masters and servants laid out, and trying to add nondenominational "boosts" would throw things out of whack. If you can give me hard numbers for the specific areas you were looking to boost I might consider it, but just asking if you can give Archer "boosts" is going to get you nowhere and earn you nothing.

If you want to try giving me hard numbers, HP and MP are both measured in thousands, ATK is measured in hundreds, DEF is tens, and AGI is single-digits.

[X] Other (write-in): Use a command seal to summon Archer to your side.

[X] Stay and fight
[X] Transform and get ready.

[X] Destroy any familiars that get too close.

[X] Getrud won't attack if you don't step on its roses.

[X] Don't waste a command seal yet. Only use it if you have no choice its too valuable to just use without consideration.

[X] If the witch is too close to avoid, time stop and get everyone to safety. Only use a command seal if you have no other choice.

[X] Use this chance to explain Madoka what is happening and try to deter her from becoming a magical girl

Temporarily Double archer agility to reach homura? or double mana?

I don't think you realize just how overpowered double MP would be so I have to nix that, but since Command Seals can be used to ggive servants a boost, using a Command Seal for a temporary AGI boost is something I would allow. Granted, there are probably better things to use a Command Seal on than a temporary AGI boost and it's something I would advise against in the narrative-focused witch battles, but that doesn't change the fact that it is still something you can do.
