This always reminds me of a scene from something I can never remember where it describes smart missiles doing their thing from the perspective of the missiles, pointing out that this isn't really what is happening but is an anthropomorphized interpretation which goes something like this:

Missile 1: "Wheee! Gogogogogogogo!"
Missile 2: "Woohoo! Targets ahead! Oh no! Countermeasures!"
Missile 3: "Don't worry I got this! Whee-"
Missile 1: "Oh boy I get to hit the shields! Yay!"
Missile 2: "No that's my job! You get t-"
Missile 1: "Oh right! I get to impact the hu-"
I'm not sure this is exactly what you're thinking of, but it's darn close. Schlock Mercenary does pretty much that same gag a couple different times.

Ah yes, that's it. I thought it was Schlock Mercenary but a cursory search didn't turn anything up so I wasn't sure.

e: Actually, hmm, maybe not. I'm certain it was missiles, because I remember them having an argument about which one gets to hit the shields and which one gets to hit the hull, after another one gets them through the active countermeasures.

Friendnaughts? I think QA is pushing the (Nonexistent) boundaries a little harder than she realizes, but good on her for enjoying herself. It's nice to see trust being extended a little to the crafting club, even if it takes a panic attack.

On the therapy front it looks like we have someone who might be good enough to legitimately help! I am instantly suspicious, because as we all know, the Worm setting and all it's characters inflict an automatic -10 penalty on any comunication skills.

They sound like the cartoon bullets from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

Maybe you're thinking of this Darths & Droids comic.

You know, that'd be a pretty funny and traumatizing thing for Taylor to pull on the Valks in Hells hand, basically designing something like the Turrets and Spheres from Portal.

"...You realize that our coworkers already know of our relationship, correct? Their betting is not subtle. Regardless, I apologize for any harmful behaviors; I thought you enjoyed them. We'll discuss them further when our shift is over."

That's very thoughtful of Candace to make sure her girlfriend enjoys the talking downs she lays on her, but must they do it during their working hours? I am not complaining, mind, but their superiors and coworkers might.

Or they might enjoy the show, eh, dunno.

I'm not sure but QA having a panic attack so bad she not only stops breathing but actually stops her own heart from beating and attempts suicide right after she offhandedly encourages the creation (or mass creation) of planet destroying weapons has got to be some kind of red flag about Hell's Hand right?
Like make all the weapons you want, no morals required but if you even think about endangering the facility (by way of planet-buster bomb/laser or any other) suicide is the most pleasant future for you.
I mean she's already made mentions about forms of mind control/forced obedience and the window in the church depicted her as aberrant and in the village/habitation level her house was the only one with weapons aimed inwards.

That psych eval's is gonna be great isn't it?

The answer of what this is from would be Tory Rising Trilogy by John Ringo. Which he wrote as a prequel to Schlock Mercenary. The specific scene being about 50k smart missiles being launch at a Rangara Assault Vector.

Theres irony in getting tips on how to fight a civilization-killing threat from a reality-killing threat.
I suppose that the advice on planet-busters technically covered civilization-killing threats since shards also do that. But in a moment of weakness, QA was actually giving them advice on fighting shards.

Big Sister spends too much time spying on other people to mind a couple being mildly affectionate at work. Most of the Perth division—especially those with grim assignments—actually like the reminders that humans can have positive interactions.

EDIT: The reminder of the observation portion doesn't care. You don't get assigned to observation if you're likely to negatively judge healthy human behaviors.

Knife missiles from The Culture, maybe? But I don't remember if they had any lines.

I immediately thought about the hamsters who keep running on a wheel, even after they fall out.

Like thrill-seeking adrenaline junkies.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if some NSFW stuff is actually SFW for them, because they should at least have some ways to decompress.

Or you know, maybe handholding.

Note the phrase is "different to do in frames" not "difficult to do in frames". I made the same mistake, or maybe it was edited to fix it?
Aha! I have been ninja-edited. That was a direct quote when I wrote it. It does make more sense this way, though.
QA had been avoiding giving her Friends anything resembling a Symbiotic Support Frame, but as Symbie had pointed out, Valkyries were not the only entities with Impeller Fields. Antagonists possessed them, too.
I really want to see the fallout of this decision.
For that matter, I wonder when she'll just start blatantly assigning them superpowers instead of faking it with tech powered directly by her?
"So I tried following the maybe-singularity and got a cheerful chirrup from Symbie. Something's screwy there."
Case in point.
She hadn't expected that; Symbie improved upon ideas, but she seldom knew enough to start from scratch. Was Symbie now growing additional hardware at rates comparable to a Newborn? QA didn't bother to fight host's automatic smile.
This might be more literal than she thinks. Taylor has probably been playing fast and loose with all those archival subsytems that keep wanting to break off...
"Higgs engines have them beat pretty handily in basically every way that matters." "I can't even determine the output but I bet that's no longer true." "Nah, Higgs is king."
Please tell me they end up eating their words... :D
How did they give the designs to Symbie? QA hadn't heard anything like that.

...Unless Symbie had contacted them while QA slept? That hypothesis appeared valid. She'd just examine the design and try to determine what Symbie had done. She certainly had a better chance of understanding it than the rest of the club.
Yeah... That's a good way to get an AI uprising. Probably won't happen here, but she's really not the one in control at this point.
Plus you wonder how much Symbie and Taylor are hiding from her, the same way she's doing it to the CC...
"Fabrication capacity: Yes."
I suspect this will also go memetic...
"And lo! The Great Young One Symbie did decree that confusion must always accompany comprehension." "I feel like we've turned into the Symbie Study club at this point. I'm actually okay with this."
Yeah, it's one of the best parts of the story.
"We already did! Jealous?"

"A bit!"

Yana froze. After the first two seconds, Candace allowed herself a sigh.
Ha! This part was hilarious.

I don't think you were. I didn't change that part at all, and I have beta-chat records to prove it. ._.

(The ninjas are inside the head!)
