Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

[X] Reform the Tax Code (TN 20 +5 Dragon and Scorpion, -5 , Crane, Mantis)
[X] Figure out the Pillars
[X] Have your nakodo put together candidates

"...Oh" You decide to press on from that. "My daughter she is touched by the void, I do not want the Toturi to be known for madness."

"Give her something green"

"...What?" You get out.
Jade then?

"The North is set to be dealt with by the Keepers, they will not succeed without the addition of a certain heroine who forsook her name.
This is important, and we need to figure out who this was. A lore search may be in order. Any Heroins who have voluntarily gone ronin, that might fit the bill? I assume that "got married" isn't enough to be described thus. Alternately, it could be talking about Shosuro... who was also Soshi... and who's currently hidden away in Sleeping Lake with the soul of Bayushi Kachiko to save them from the corruption of the Lying Darkness. So maybe not that one, or maybe it just means we need the Shosuro/Soshi to help out? I'm sure there must be other possibilities out there.

To the matter of Otosan Uchi. You must understand that the legend of the Throne is true...and that is what it is all set up for shift the array and all else will fail."

"The Legend of the Throne?" You ask.

"Do they teach you nothing? The way to Heaven is behind the Throne." Togashi explains.

So, top priority, we need to shift the array. Also, if we wind up in a real battle in the throne room, and we *have* shifted the array, that's probably a particularly fortuitous place for some shugenja to beseech the heavens for aid.

Togashi shrugs.
"I am bound not to give you the answer you seek in full. An answer that is true and useless is what I am to give when it comes to solving problems. To inform you of a problem I have some leeway, but the more of my power I use the quicker I age."

Huh.

"...Oh" You decide to press on from that. "My daughter she is touched by the void, I do not want the Toturi to be known for madness."

"Give her something green"

"...What?" You get out.

"That's all I can say."

We should absolutely give her some jade thing to have on her person at all times. Beyond that...? Keep our eyes open?

"Is there advice I should pass on to my Jade Champion"

"Don't eat the sashimi" Togashi says.

"...that's specific and yet not very helpful" You reply.

"It is, isn't it?"

It *is*. Also, we should totally pass it on at first opportunity.

As for what to do....

This year, we need to either send our daughter off or get the jade accumulated. We need to do the other one next year. It seems almost odd that "send our daughter off to the Phoenix, because they're the only ones who know how to train Ishiken" should be the sort of thing that takes our full action for the year. It's also a bit frustrating, because the fact that there are other options out there is basically mocking us. The fact that we have to manage this personally constrains our decision space pretty violently, and the jade accumulation isn't a choice either. Unless we want to just fail at trying to cleanse Otosan Uchi, it's an action tax. When we get one action per year, action taxes are frustrating.

If there were any plausible alternatives at all on the jade, even if they were subpar, that would be less frustrating. I still feel like choosign a school for our daughter shoudl bea side question rather than a full action. Still, I will vote the action tax that I am given.

[x] Arrange for your daughter Minoru's education and betrothal (TN 20 variable results)

I like handing influence to the Otomo. They're useful.

Well at least he's aware of it.
[] Arrange for your daughter Minoru's education and betrothal (TN 20 variable results)
[] Lower taxes for the year and look for ways to cut spending (TN 20, +5 Crab and Dragon, -5 Scorpion and Unicorn)
[] Fortify the Jeweled City (TN 25 +5 Lion and Unicorn, -5 Dragon and Phoenix)
[] Reform the Tax Code (TN 20 +5 Dragon and Scorpion, -5 , Crane, Mantis)
[] Create a Jade Supply (-15 Crab)
We're not coddling her. We've just got three other pressing issues this turn!
We don't have enought actions.:cry::cry::cry:
Maybe. Or maybe just colour her in green it's hard to say. Jade won't hurt though.
Perhaps a lovely Kimono that brings out her eyes will avert the dark fate we didn't even realise she has and instead become obsessed with fashion.
Maybe Bonsai's a good meditative practice for learning to talk to Void Kami.

Could be the lion-chan Matsu who went ronin during the lion champion fiasco.

I mean voluntarily going ronin is a pretty good way to foraske your name.

Hot damn. You're right. She definitely qualifies, too... and it's going to be distinctly non-trivial to convince her. Huh.

Bonsai might also be a good idea.

Yuina your Ishiken daughter isn't taking a turn to convince the Phoenix about Akane is just mentioning it as a thing that she's going to do in case for some reason you objected.
Minoru your first daughter is taking a turn to get betrothals and school options without ruffling feathers. Who educates the heir is a pretty big deal, that's why I consider it a pretty big action to do.

As for the Jade Supply, I admit it is a bit of an action tax, but I can't figure an in universe way to have it so the Crab willingly take a Jade cut without it taking a serious push from the Throne. Its just not something they will do willingly. I'll try to come up with a different solution if people want to hold off on it.

I don't suppose we can do the same thing Hisao's father did? As in wait until she is crowned the new empress so she can take advantage of her current political situation?

I mean we offered it to our brother no reason to not extend the same courtesy to the Crown Princess.

You can do so for the betrothal yes, as in it will be an option. But you can't just not educate her and your Kenku sensei is off doing something.

The traditional thing is the Kakita dueling academy isn't it?
Why? I mean how often does a member of the royal family fight their own duels?
I would have thought a more cerebral bushi school such as the Shiba school, Akodo bushi because of lion heritage and it tends to be the most generic all comers one, or even a courtier one instead of the premier dueling school as Minoru is more likely to be doing diplomacy daily then fighting duels as that is what her Emerald Champion will be for.

(My Inner Munchkin still insists we send her to be Toku trained and yes I know the political blowback would only be somewhat less than sending her off to be trained by Gaijin.)

Forgot to ask earlier, @gman391 is the Ebonite Order still around? or Between the Shadow Dragon and Paneki have they been rendered extinct? And if so what happened to the Ebon Stone?

Prestige and Cranes. Take your pick.
Samurai are warriors. The Emperor is a Samurai there fore he is a warrior.
Kakita won that first tournament with Iajutsu therefore Iajutsu is the strongest style.
Since the emperor is a warrior why would he settle for learning a second rate school?

Add in varying amounts of Crane dominance in the courts, and well my father went there.

I didn't ask if it was ideal remember, I asked if it was traditional (admittedly its kind of a Hantei tradition).

It is in fact the Hantei tradition to be trained in the Kakita Ryu. The Crane would in fact happily give their left arms for that to be a Toturi tradition. But so far it hasn't. Tsuado your aunt was trained in the Akodo style, Sezaru your uncle was trained as an Ishiken, and your father was trained by the Steel Chrysanthemum personally...until Hoketuhime stabbed his face in for trying goad your father into attacking him. (Quality guy that Steel Chrysanthemum) You yourself were trained by Itsume the Kenku due to your father being to his mind rightly paranoid about you after Daigotsu's first half dozen attempted kidnappings.

So far the Toturi haven't tied themselves down to a single traditional training, largely because of circumstance. Also the fact that unlike Hantei, Toturi was never in love with his sister.

As for the Kakita Ryu not being good for anything but dueling, that's not quite true, while they are the best at dueling they have a strong fundamental on actual fighting but also courtly decorum as well. For an Emperor who wants his heir to be able to fight and court, the Kakita and (oddly Bayushi) both fit the bill far more than the other styles do.

As to the Ebon Order...what do you think Altair is up to?

Ah, then not as urgent a priority as ensuring we don't go bankrupt.

Ahhh.
I can see the Jade thing, actually. As far as getting Minoru set up... I'd kind of like an option where we say "We'll send her <place>, and not bother with figuring out the implications" that would get it done, not take a turn action, but potentially generate additional political fallout (especially if the Otomo fail their rolls). That would make it more something we shouldn't take lightly than something that we simply have to do... much more in line with the other available options.

Actually, at that point "just send them to the Kakita" would be a not terrible plan. They *do* have the "blade and court" thing going on, they've done it before, and the Crane could use some more love. We'd likely get some bitterness from the folks that don't like the Crane much and really don't *want* this to be a Toturi tradition (the Crab in particular are likely to be especially unhappy - particularly if we build up Jade supplies at the same time) but it's a not-terrible option. Alternately, go Akodo if we think she's going to need to play battlefield general more than courtier.

Battlefield General is largely the Shogun's job iirc, but honestly how hard would it be for the Toturi to form their own school? Could we have Minoru train at more than one School to cover all the skills a Toturi Empress would need and not show favoritism?

Aka train her in at least one of each Great Clans Schools?

Between the Hida, Kakita, Mirumoto, Akodo, Yoritomo, Shiba, Bayushi, and Shinjo Bushi Schools their shouldn't be any gaps left in her education.

Although mainly I just don't want to give the Crane a guaranteed in for political points, if they want some they should earn it like the rest of the Clans and not be given it just because of "Tradition".

While I understand that position, choosing the right sensei, choosing the right clan, choosing the right husband...these are all things that so far aren't things that are after thoughts.

But alright I'll put it to a vote

[] New Air and Void options
[] Keep the options as is but different ones next year

I also wouldn't want to start it as a tradition. That's actually one of the potential downsides of this plan... but one generation does not a tradition make. It only starts beign a tradition if our heir decides to do it to *her* heir.

Ah. I think I have been not clear about my suggestion? I think the Void option makes sense, in all its action tax glory. It is what it is, and action taxes suck, but this is a situation that kind of does suck, so what are you going to do? For our heir... yeah, normally picking that stuff out properly *would* take a whole bunch of attention and effort. I expect that having it managed by underlings as an afterthought is the sort of thing it would come with some significant costs... but "if you don't do this, it'll seriously cost you" and "You must do this. You essentially have no choice" are two different states.

It would, and voting to keep the options but new ones next year would put it into the latter category.

In regards to their being a Toturi School...the one who could develop that is Kaneka, and he hasn't, and at the moment isn't interested in doing so, but it was one of the options that was available depending on how well things rolled.
