Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

Well there is the Khol Wall to guard against the threat but even then... how do you fight golems? Either threat will need the might of the clans rallied, and we still have the internal threat. Maybe we can have the Unicorn use their members in the Burning Sands provide info, we may even need to ally with the Yodotai.

Ironically, the Dragon/Phoenix might be better off against the glass golems, while the Lion/Unicorn might do better against the burning Yobanjin.
And if I'm not mistaken in something it would be much easier to drag Shugenja in desert than army through mountains.

So we do get the War of Dark Fire and no plague and Kali-Ma but Shadow Dragon and Glass Golems.. and Medinat Salam is gone shoot, that is not good.
The Scorpion-Crab War got disrupted so the Yogo that released the Black Scroll that resulted in Kali-ma coming to be, never had his particular brain wave.

Are we certain that Sezaru can single handedly beat either one of these?
Sezaru certainly believes he can, and he's arguably the greatest Ishiken to ever live, which is essentially the cheat codes to reality. You can try telling him no, but he's not quite sane anymore.

That said whether he can or not, what he definitely can do is so much damage that they're delayed years, potentially decades.

[X] "Go, Wolf of the Toturi, go and remind the Shadow Dragon that we defeated it's predecessor, if it would march an army of glass on us? Turn it into so much sand."

Yonjabin and Dark Oracle are easier to deal with, we have our own Oracles and lots of conventional shugenja support plus the Phoenix Masters.

[X] "Stay and share your knowledge with the Empire, Uncle. Prepare those you find worthy and those in need to know of your knowledge against the threats from byond the borders and allow us to remain vigilant. Rokugan has need of you because I have need of you."

If the Yodotai are being led and modified by the Dark Oracle of Fire, we're not going to be able to ally with them.

Could you give me a timeline and explain what's happening from both ideas.
I'd assumed that uncle would be taking an army but it now seems that he'll be one v one ing the whole encounter?
Is this expected to take more than three years which is why we don't just fight one then the other?
Are we at least sending a Miya to the other clan?

Timeline wise

1167: The Dark Oracle of Fire heads north to prepare an attack on the Dragon.

1168 Toturi III begins his quest for Enlightenment. Sezaru kills Shiba Mirabu and flees. The Dark Oracle of Fire is discovered by a Yobanjin mystic and slain, his power consumed.

1169 Toturi III's quest leads him to the Shadowlands, there through a series of events, he and his companions manage to force the Shadow Dragon to flee before it can finish corrupting Kitsune Mori, it heads outside of Rokugan and begins working on Medinat al Salaam. Toturi III later dies unable to leave the Shadowlands. Sezaru discovers the fate of the Dark Oracle and heads west hoping to send a message through the Desert Moto.

1170: Sezaru discovers what the Shadow Dragon is doing, and how it is hiding itself from the Unicorn, he also learns of Toturi IV's ascension. Still mad, he decides that one of these threats must be dealt with by him but he cannot choose, both seem equally important. He makes his way back to the Empire and confronts Toturi IV (you guys)

------------------------------------
Sezaru believes they'll both attack around the same time, while you can probably go attack the Yobanjin and then the Glass Army in turn. (Or vice versa) Whether or not the Emerald Empire has the internal infrastructure to handle two foreign wars back to back is a question that a firm yes can't be given. This is because up until about ten years ago, and even during those ten years, the Emerald Empire was racked with internal civil war and external war that severely depleted its internal manpower and economic reserves.

In essence, Sezaru says that if nothing is done that Rokugan is going to have to 2 v 1 in a brutal set of wars probably to the knife. He does not think that Rokugan can handle that. Thus he's going on a suicide mission to make it so that Rokugan fights a 1 v 1 instead. However, he doesn't know which one to suicide so he's giving the decision to Hisao.

The Yobanjin and Rokugani have been feuding since literally the formation of the Emerald Empire. A Miya can be sent, but it's unlikely that the Yobanjin will do anything but attempt to reconquer what they see as their ancestral birth right. From a real politik perspective, the Emerald Empire gains nothing from having a strong northern Empire on their borders. Being led by someone who eats Fire Oracles does not help here.

The Shadow Dragon is also possible to negotiate, but being corrupted into a being wishing to end the world, any deal is unlikely to long term work out.

Hope that helps explain stuff

If the Yodotai are being led and modified by the Dark Oracle of Fire, we're not going to be able to ally with them.
The Yobanjin (note the spelling) are being led by the Shaman. The Yodotai are in essence magical Romans across the Burning Sands currently conquering the Magic Egyptians (Senpet)

Thus he's going on a suicide mission to make it so that Rokugan fights a 1 v 1 instead. However, he doesn't know which one to suicide so he's giving the decision to Hisao.
Is there any aid we could offer to not make it a Suicide Mission?
I mean if he has it solo, a legion focused on nothing but keeping him alive and fighting might be useful?
Do we have any artifacts or Retainers we could offer Hisao's uncle?

Suicide-level Loyal hero units shouldn't be thrown away if they can be preserved and still function.

Most hero level units in Rokugan are perfectly okay with dying if that's what honour/clan/Empire needs.
Now in theory you could order some of the Imperial Legions to go help, sure. And possibly convince him it's a good idea. But that does mean you're having your Imperial Legion walk around with an at best slightly unstable magical nuke. Sezaru is aware of his growing insanity on some level, and even if you keep him, it might not be the best thing for him.

@gman391 - what kind of terrain are the Yobanjin running around on? If we wanted to launch an attack before they do (we don't want the terrible army of burning fire marching across our lands if we can help it) then it'd be good to know what kind of armies could actually function reasonably well up there. Are we basically talking magical Mongolia?

Oh so it is at some level a let him die with dignity thing?

Going with

[X] "Go, Wolf of the Toturi, go and teach the Yobanjin the true might of the Emerald Empire. If they would burn it all to ash, leave not even ash behind"

Since the Phoenix are hurting still, while the Lion and the Unicorn are still intact and thus can spare the manpower of battle for the moment.

It's a mistake to say that the Yobanjin run on any one terrain, although if I had to say what real world region most closely mirrored it, I'd go with Manchuria, albeit one with it's southern border defined by huge ass mountains as opposed to the relative easy access that Manchuria enjoys with China. Which means you have a large variety of terrains from open plains in the north, rolling hills and valleys in the south and dotted plateaus in the middle with a relatively prosperous eastern coast that ties the region together. That said, if you're wondering if they use nomad style tactics, yes they do, on swift wyrms which are basically flightless Dragons, with crossbows and other fun tactics. (Note there is a slight change from the base lore where in the Yobanjin just use normal crossbows, keeping in mind a nomadic life style, and how that style of warfare works, the Eastern Coast makes repeating crossbows, not just crossbows) In many ways the main reason the Yobanjin are not a threat is that they are as nearly divided against each other as anything else, and without their neutral city in the North, they'd probably have splintered into feuding peoples a long time ago. That said if there's one surefire way to unite the Yobanjin it's to invade them. Particularly the Rokugani who they've always hated since being evicted from their lands at the founding of the Empire. (In terms of RL history, the Yobanjin are something of a mix between Xiongnu and Ainu in terms of influences, yes I know that sounds weird)

@keenscythe Yes in part.

I actually meant to the clans we weren't interacting with however the suicide mission answered that really.

Pretty sure it's the Unicorns purpose to fight these kinds of threats from beyond the empire. But Golems are more difficult to fight and better to keep them from our bread-basket lands.

Okay let's tally this then.
Alright looks like a narrow vote to sent Sezaru North. I doubt any last minute vote swings are going to happen, but vote will be locked in four hours.

Year 1: To Love or be Safe
You debated it for a moment of where to go, to let the Dragon and Phoenix hold the line or the Unicorn and the Lion. In the end you can't quite say what held you to your decision. Maybe it was sentiment for your fiancée, maybe it was just a political consideration that having the Unicorn punched in the mouth would make them easier vassals. You hated thinking like that, reducing things to numbers and people just necessary expenditures. But you couldn't deny the reasoning. Thus you make your choice.

"Go, Wolf of the Toturi, go and teach the Yobanjin the true might of the Emerald Empire. If they would burn it all to ash, leave not even ash behind" You command.

Sezaru bows. "As you command Naseru"

With that, almost as quickly as he came, he disappears out of the tent, leaving you behind, feeling as if you had made a terrible choice, but the one you had to make. Glass golems were a force you had no idea of how to handle, but you had the finest minds in the Empire at your disposal, if none of them could figure out a way to deal with this...well then maybe you deserved it.

You reach for the bottle of sake and consider for a moment pouring a glass...before deciding to just drink the damn thing from the bottle you've earned that much. In rush the Seppun and Kaname, all of them looking around wildly for Sezaru. When they see you relatively unharmed, they stop and bow.

"Was anyone hurt?" You ask.

"A few of the guards will feel it tomorrow, but he froze them in the air rather than kill them...tell me Emperor do we hunt him?" The lead Seppun, Seppun Mirinami as you recall, asks.

"No... anyone sent after him would be dead before the night was out. Make sure all the guests are safe, and assure them the problem is dealt with."

Kaname looks at you with unabashed curiosity.

"I see..." Mirinami says, clearly unhappy, but unable to deny your orders.

The Seppun leave, thus as you sit back down on your bed, the only other person in the room is Kaname. You look up at her, noting her hands slowly relaxing from their adrenaline high. She doesn't leave, instead turning those large eyes on you.

You take another swig of sake, man could get lost in those eyes. You certainly have in the past. Kaname sets her naginata to the side and approaches you. In spite of the knowledge that nothing will happen, your mind can't help but play images of what would happen next in a pillow book. She'd put her hand around yours, and say something about being a better relief than sake then...

"Are you alright?" She asks

With a start, your fantasy ends as you look up at her, she's very close.
"What?"

"Are...are you alright Hisao?" She asks, her eyes looking down at you.

Such a simple question isn't it? But what can you answer? No you are not alright that you have sent your uncle off to die, and decided to sacrifice the Unicorn and Lion for the Dragon and the Phoenix?
Yes you are alright because this is just the job of being the Emperor. To make the choice of who lives and who dies. That you made the calculations and the answer came out as that. Not from malice, but from simple math.

Her hand reaches down around yours, pushing the sake bottle away from you.

"Please, talk to me." Her voice is soft and low.

You look up at her.
"There's nothing to talk about, I made a choice. History will judge if I made the right one."

Kaname nods and sits down behind you, wrapping her arms around you. This is all highly scandalous...but you don't care, you've drunk enough to blame it on the sake if you want.
She doesn't say anything, just holding you still as you put away the bottle and lean into her.

"Its okay" she says softly, after several minutes.

"No, it's not, it shouldn't be."

"I didn't like you at first, you were so wrapped up in politics, in appearance, that I thought you didn't care for the people, for Bushido, but I was wrong. You do care...you're trying the best you can right?"

"Hai" You mumble.

"Then let it go, in the morning keep trying, but here with me, let it go." She urges.

It sounds so seductive, to let her in, to have a wife in spirit as well as body. But that creates weakness as well as strength. If you lost her, after letting her in, it would be ragged scar on your heart for the rest of your life. Can you really justify being weak?

An Emperor must be stronger than steel. For he is the master of steel and flesh.

The feeling of Kaname's hands on your shoulders brings you back from your thoughts. You know she likes to do this when you're in the capital, when things can be arranged, but she's taking a risk here. No doubt some would use her presence to show her as unchaste.

But you don't care, you've spent months helping to temper her, to keep her from just causing fights wherever she goes. And she's...not someone you're unfond of. No while her tendency to see everything in black and white is problematic, she's more than her flaws or her beauty, she cares, perhaps too much.

She cares, and she's kissing the back of your neck, thoughts empty as you simply feel for a moment. There is a choice to be made now, if you leave, then things will stay as they are, she will be a comfort, and a good wife, but you will not be partners the way your father and mother were. But you will be safe.

If you kiss her, you don't know if you will stop, you may well have a winter child....but she will be let inside your walls, you will have someone you can let out all your feelings too, without shame. But you'll no longer be safe, you can't defend yourself from her, and when she causes problems, and she will, you'll be defending her.

Your heart, and your pragmatism war with each other.

[] Kiss Kaname
[] Don't kiss Kaname

[X] Don't kiss Kaname

I am assuming by Winter Child you mean one conceived before the marriage is formalized as she is technically our Fiancé now correct with the marriage ceremony yet to take place?

Yes, due to Winter Court being a place to practice the game of love affairs, accidents happen. And suspicious minds have long noted that there are many children born around nine months after a Winter Court, while there's never any proof that these children sired there weren't the result of relations between spouses, the stigma is strong enough, that it's become a polite way to refer to children borne out of wedlock. For Hisao and Kaname it's unlikely anyone would be so gauche as to comment on it, but if she does get pregnant, it'll always follow the first born. (If yes is chosen, I'll post the pregnancy mechanics)

Meta, I want to stress that I'm not making a value judgement here, Rokugan does, but it's not one I share.

...
Honestly I see some ways to convene feelings here without it being essentially foreplay and being hard to resist continuing. Or at least in lesser quantity. But...

Okay even more important to not kiss her at this point. Rokugan has a very establish values and way of doing things that are literally given to them by the divine. In the clan post I have been referencing Kami, these are the children of Lord Moon and Lady Sun and are Divine. They founded the Empire and have laid forth its edicts. This is also in accordance with the various Dragons (not the Clan) that are also Divine. This is Divine Mandate that can impact you in the afterlife, but also impact your children, and their children and so on. Angering the Heavens is not something to be done lightly and there is also a loss of status and legitimacy for spitting on traditions. Even the most extreme and progressive Clans (Mantis and Unicorn) hold the traditions of Rokugan in high regard and at most press for small changes. Fathering a child before marriage is a huge no and would weaken our Dynasty. Also bear in mind unlike the Hantei Dynasty we do not have the length of Hantei Dynasty nor direct descent from the Kami Hantei to support us. As such we need to be very conscious of keeping our Dynasty strength strong

As per usual unless I say no write ins, they're allowed.

But I'm putting Hisao's headspace out here, in that he feels this is a yes or no question. If you want to look at it from outside that, to feelings Hisao doesn't want to acknowledge, then it's important to note that Hisao has never explicitly ordered someone to their death before, accidents happen, and people have died because of him. But there's a difference between doing it over some writing, and doing it in person...he's feeling alone and a little guilty, both emotions that he's refusing to acknowledge thanks to Rokugani norms declaring regret a sin. He's seeking a connection with another human, and this is mixing with the sake, and the fact that he is attracted to Kaname, and she him. He has enough self awareness to realize this could go very badly, thus the option being framed here.

Does Hisao let himself be vulnerable with at least one person....or does he clam up and try burden it all alone, doing either has long term consequences.
