Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

Winter Court XV: Conversations in Kyuden Doji
-Sirrocco

Long ago, you had determined that you would step down after twenty years of rule. Studying the Hantei and your own family had showed that a good emperor ruled well for about that period of time. The stress of managing the Empire, the needs of state all required its ruler to be at it's best. However, in that requirement was a paradox. A new untested leader was never the best one.

So what was best for the Empire....was that an Emperor who was still capable of assisting their heir step down and assist in the transition, make it so that whatever happened the Burden of Empire was not left careening towards the ground.

So you understand Noritoshi's words, they are ones that looked back at you from time to time. You truly did not know if Minoru was learning all she needed to be an Empress under the mysterious Kenku that had taken over her training.

But you had to have faith something that was hard for anyone so used to having control like you and your former Champion were.

Thus you answer carefully.

"It's simple Kakita-san, they will never be ready, until they are. No one is ever ready for the burdens we have to undertake as leaders. I was not when I took the throne, another five years, another ten would not have made me more ready. It won't make them more ready not where it matters, because so much of our position is something that can only be experienced. So then the difference in stepping down over being forced, is that you get to still be there. You can help them become ready over the years of transition, smooth things over. If you cannot be there, they will have to do it on their own and learn from their own mistakes, even if it's the same mistakes you made."

You look at the castle walls for a moment.

"That voice telling you that they are not ready? It cannot be silenced because it is correct. However, if you step down in spite of it? You can turn from worrying about the future to helping your heir in the now. Which is far more productive."

You look back at Noritoshi.

"As strange as it sounds from me Kakita-san....We have to have faith. Faith in our children, just as our parents had to have faith in us."

Noritoshi blinks slowly for a second, before a wry smile flickers across his face in the Crane way. Not quite reaching his mouth but his eyes. There's not acceptance there, but rather amusement.

"My Emperor, when did we become old men?" He asks quietly.

You shrug, you don't feel old. But you know that you've reached middle age. Indeed, you have more gray hair than black these days. Not that anyone knows that...it's important to project vigor.

"I cannot say Kakita-san." You say after a moment. "But there's still life in us yet, and I think one of the duties is oft neglected is the duty to our children. Your son is by all accounts a fine young man, let him be one."

Noritoshi nods.
"Hai, I think I will rest my body in the onsen, if my Emperor permits?" He asks.

"Of course, I might join you in a bit." You say.

"I will keep the water hot then" He says with a laugh.

You smile and turn back to enjoy the gardens.

Losing Noritoshi will hurt, but you think...it might be for the best that he gets a chance to spend time with his son.

Kyuden Doji, Month of the Rat 23 Day

The game of kemari goes on and on as you watch, you had decided to sit out this round and let others have their fun in the crisp winter snow. The large circle of courtiers move with elegance and courtesy as they keep the ball up in the air, all while in the formal clothing of court.

For yourself, you were enjoying a hot apple cider with cinnamon. A new style of drinking it that had come from the Ivindi. It was a good change from the usual, and the kind the Ivindi made somehow wasn't quite as spirited as the kind Rokugani made, making it ideal if one wished for something other than tea while not wanting to be intoxicated.

That the Crane were serving it spoke volumes of how much the Empire had changed from when you started.

Still as you watched Doji Makoto hold his own amongst the adults, you have to admit that the boy is turning into a capable young man physically, emotionally...You were not sure yet. The layers of protocol between you and him and the fact that Daidoji Kikaze never let you meet him alone met that his full measure was uncertain. It was always easier to rely on a mentor than on yourself.

Idle thoughts float away as Doji Yuriko kowtows before you. Your imperial Advisor had spent her time putting out a few minor fires according to Kotaro but nothing that you needed to worry about.

A nod of your head as you motion for her to rise and join you.

"Hello Doji-san."

"Greetings my Emperor." She says sitting down beside you.

"Enjoying a visit home?" You ask.

"Hai, it is good to see the gardens even in winter."

"And your Champion coming along so nicely"

"Doji-sama is indeed blooming into a splendid scion of the Crane. I do have news though from the Lion."

"....Yes?" You ask slowly.

Just once you wanted a Winter Court where nothing too interesting happened politically, just once.

"It appears that his wife is with child. He sent messengers to inform you." Yuriko says. Smiling in that Crane way.

A slight quirk of your eyebrow.
"I will write a congratulations letter for him, and send it out in the morning."

"Hai, I thought it prudent to let you know when I heard, and well, we have not spent much time together my Emperor."

The eyebrow lowers as you think...no, in comparison to Akane, you hadn't spent much time with Yuriko. Part of that was simply your need to focus on other things, and other parts of it were just different interests. You preferred the plays and songs of yesteryear to the new style of renka poetry that had taken the artisan world by storm. While Yuriko spent her limited free time sampling new arts.

"That so, and what do you mean to do about it?" You ask after taking a sip of the cider.

"Well, in Kyuden Doji, and Daidoji-sama has things well in hand, so I thought that I would try to learn your will more my Emperor."

It's not quite saying 'I want to be your friend' but it's close, particularly given the gulf in status between you two.

Akane had become your left hand as you failed and succeeded together into a strong Empire. There was no shared experiences in that. You weren't about to brook failure if you did not have to.

So that leaves you with a conundrum of sorts. You can already hear the gossip in your head. About you having realized there were more women than the beloved and pious Shiba Kaname-shiryo, were already seducing another young maiden with your wife in the same castle no less.

Nope, not stepping into that.

"Of course" you say. "My wife and I are set to attend pilgrimage to Shinden Musubi soon, would you care to join us?"

Yuriko doesn't frown, but takes a hair longer to nod than it really should have.

"I would love to my Emperor." She says brightly.

You aren't truly fooled, Yuriko would have preferred a more one on one meeting and you understand that. Doji friendship worked best in one on one settings, bonding over shared interests. But while you still do not love Kana you weren't going to give her more trouble not when people were still wondering if Ayumi or her were going to give you more children first.

Time to pivot by giving her work to do.

"How are things with the Minor Clans?" you ask.

Yuriko blinks for a moment

"They are relatively quiet. The Destruction of the Ox Clan has been a blow to them to be sure. Yet with the revelations of what they were, none of them are inclined to see it as anything but justice. The remaining Ox who were found not guilty have been quietly absorbed by the Centipede and the Dragonfly. " She says after a moment. "The Hare, Sparrow and Fox are again in talks about strengthening the Minor Clan Alliance while the Tortoise and Badger stand against. As for the even smaller ones...they are doing well for the most part. The prestige they gained from the Eight Banners Army has allowed most of them to expand into the somewhat empty territory from the Age of Chaos."

You had known all of this, but you wanted to have her thinking about that, then thinking about whether or not you liked her. You did, but she was so...young. While you had faith, there was just something about people your age or older that you got along with better.

Maybe you were an old man?

A shake of your head.
"And the Mantis?"

"...Hiroko-san is doing well, she has held them together, she spends most of her winter courts wooing the Wasp ambassadors and the Centipede ambassadors but not to the detriment of others. It is expected naturally. Otomo-san thinks that they are focused on finding a new source of Jade first and foremost. Although truthfully I would count on...Yasuki-san for that."

Oh that might have hurt her, to say that she would rely on a Yasuki. Somethings will never change you suppose. The Yasuki and Doji being enemies is one of them.

"I see---" you stop mid sentence and reach out catching the kemari ball before it hit Yuriko's face.

"Perhaps Doji-san, we should join the game?" You ask.

Yuriko blinks for a moment.
"...Hai." she says.

-----------------------------

You don't know what you expected when you returned to your quarters that night. Kana had declined to join you for a moon viewing with the Kakita. Something about her Matsu heritage acting up. You supposed that trained with the Spirit Callers of the Kitsu that made sense, and hadn't thought anything of it.

But as you enter the quarters seeing Kana focused very hard over a pool of water, you walk over to see what she was focusing on. Divination with water was common enough although you don't recall it being something that Kana had cared for.
On the surface of the water is a young woman, one heartrendingly similar to Kaname. Oh she wasn't in fine clothing, instead rough home spun material that was all too familiar from your own days as a student of Itsume. It seems Kozume isn't that different from your dear departed sensei. She walks with purpose, carrying a bundle of sticks on her shoulder. Despite all that, her eyes, her face, they are her mother's.

"...Minoru-chan?" You ask softly.

Minoru blinks, and then looks around for a moment before shrugging, with one shoulder and carrying on.

Kana takes a shuddering breath and collapses beside you.

You kneel down and cradle her in your arms.

"What were you doing Kana?"

Kana doesn't answer for a few moments just breathing before looking up at you a little sad.

"I was trying to use the water kami to talk to Minoru...Yuina-chan is adorable, and I'm glad to have her approval. But I would to know my eldest step daughter before she returns to us." She says wanly. "I also thought it would be a nice gift to let you talk to her for the New Years Day festival. I'm still working on it though."

You look at the water and at Kana's flushed face.
"Is it hard?"

"Um...yes?" Kana squeaks. "Most messages on the kami are done with air, but air doesn't work with visuals because of the playful nature, but you can use the water kami to view remote things if you have a...." she goes on for several minutes explaining how she was doing this.

The gist of it was that the water kami did not talk like the other kami communicating through picture and symbol. However, with sufficient skill at manipulating water, and truthfully the supernatural nature of Kawa forest. Kana thought she could make a two way communications pool through the water. However, it was in principle possible.

The first step being using water to see Minoru. But the effort was apparently exhausting her.
On the one hand you desperately wanted to talk to your daughter. You hadn't seen her properly since...Kaname.

On the other hand, this seems to be nearly killing your wife, and you don't want that. Minoru was due to return in two years. You could...wait...maybe.

"Did you see more of her?" you ask.

"Hai, she's a strong woman, truthfully I'd be a little jealous of her at her age." Kana admits.

"I will take the knowledge that she is safe and whole as a gift. I don't want to have my wife killing herself." You say.

"...I would like to keep trying Hisao. I can't really work on the wards here, the Crane would take offense. While I enjoy a lot of the winter court, I just...need to do something. I can't just release tension by tearing up part of the grounds with the kami." Kana says.

"That would be rude. You nearly passed out there Kana, I don't want that to happen to you. At least work with someone " You say.

"I know this looks bad, but I can do this, assign a Miharu to help me if you want, but trust me to do this" Kana asks firmly

AN: So 2020, it's been a thing. I burnt out creatively over 2019, and for most of 2020 just the world has made it hard to recover. That doesn't really excuse the radio silence, but yeah. However, taking the hiatus, and going through the thread again thanks to @AnOldIdeaMadeNew has called back the muse.

So I'm going to try and finish this quest. I hope some of you are still willing to follow me to the end. Thank you all for reading.

[X] Trust her

It is great to see this story resuming.

Trusting her seems like the best option as she is the expert in this situation and not trusting her seems like it would be a rather serious insult.

[X] Trust her

Let's not undermine her. Ah, to be Emperor is to be suffering. Everyone wants the Steel Throne, no one wants the desk, to paraphrase Vorkosigan Saga.

[X] Trust her

Not sure why there would be a situation where we wouldn't trust her. Also welcome back!

Winter Court XV: Daddy Issues
-Trust her

For a few moments you look into Kana's eyes, the sheer determination and sincerity wins you over. You don't like projects where you don't know the results, you like projects that could be potentially end in maiming or death for those you care about even less. And yes, although you don't love Kana, you care about her, you want her to be happy.

Which is why you suppose that you will let her continue on this project that sounds vaguely impossible. On the other hand, considering her grandfather Toku-no-kami that might actually matter less than it should.

"Hisao?" Kana asks.

"Alright, but you will have a Miharu looking over your shoulder. I'm not going to lose you just because you were too stubborn.

Kana holds her mouth in a straight line for a moment, then it begins to tremble a little.

"Something wrong?"

That sets her off, as she snorts and giggles.

Wait why would she....Oh...

"...I have learned to be better" you declare primly.

You definitely weren't the same stubborn control freak you've always been. No, you've grown, matured.

"Yes...." Kana says getting her giggles under control.

It's almost like she doesn't believe you.

"I am going to bed, does my wife want to join me?" You say deciding not fight over it.

You are the Emperor and by default always right. There are perks to this job as well as downsides. However, being always right does not mean correct, as your uncle sometimes says.

Kana smiles and nods.

The pair of you rise and move over to the large futon, Kana lays down splaying out. She had been able to change into the lighter sleeping wear hours ago. You had to change out of the multi layered formal kimono.

"...Hisao?" Kana asks, propping herself up on one arm to look at you.

"Yes?" You reply.

"Why did you want a priestess to be your second wife? I mean, it's not that I'm not honoured, or glad for it. You've been good to me since the wedding. It's just...something I'm curious about."

Taking off the last of the formal wear, you sit on the bed as you look around for the yukata you usually wear to bed. While thinking about the answer.

"A few reasons I suppose. After..." your breath still hitches thinking about that day.

You still remember the warm feeling of her blood on your hands. The painful whisper to promise her....the frantic need for her to be saved, for someone anyone to save her."

"...How my first wife died" you say barely pausing. "I wanted someone who could...defend themselves against that sort of thing. I don't want to lose anyone else in my family to that Bitch." The word is far too kind for Shahai.

But even here you must have decorum.

Kana moves across the futon and wraps her arms around you, resting her head on the shoulder. For a moment you think she will say something, but instead she just nuzzles into your neck.

One of your hands reaches up and caresses her face. You have to press on, even though it still hurts, a dull constant ache, but one you can hobble forward with.

"I also thought with the Zanj and the Jade, and everything else, that the Empire needed someone to see to it's spiritual health, more than anything else."

"Hai, I've been talking to Horiuchi-san a lot about that. Trying to understand these people...but it's hard. Even the texts Togashi-san provide don't make any sense to me. " Kana says.

"Lastly after the Maiden's Court in Toshi sano Kanemochi Kaeru, I thought it would be interesting to see how the priestesses of all the clans would change Kyuden Bayushi." You say.

Kana shakes her head, moving away from your hand for a moment before returning it.
"We were all so determined to get one over each other that none of us were very compassionate...I have apologized, but not everyone accepts it...suppose jealousy of winning."

"Winning?" You ask dryly.

"Even if your daughter is set to become Empress soon....the chance to be married to a handsome, powerful man...isn't something that many people would turn away so easily." Kana says her smile in her voice.

"So you only like me for my looks?" You tease.

"No, but they do help" Kana replies.

You shift around to face the Matsu woman fully.

"Enlighten your husband then."

Kana climbs on to your lap.
"My husband already knows all of his good qualities. But perhaps I can show the depth of my appreciation?" She lightly teases resting her head against your neck.

"...I think that can be arranged." you say.

You don't get much sleep that night, but you can't say it wasn't worth it. No you don't love Kana, not yet, but it's getting easier to care about her, and more.

Month of the Ox, 11th day (Midwinter)

There were times when you just wanted to practice your jiujutsu. The calming feeling of pushing your body to its limit as you worked out the stress and frustrations of being responsible for a million souls. Or something like that, you needed to take a new census before the war.

Regardless, that brought you to the personal dojo of the Crane Champion in Kyuden Doji. Elegant, with tasteful wall scrolls depicting Crane victories on two sides and simple weapon rack on the other containing the normal samurai weapons.

The only people who could get in here, were by your own orders, your advisors, your family, and your chief vassals. Not that you expected to need that last one.

So as you bring your foot down in a powerful if predictable axe kick. It's with surprise that you notice that underneath a painting of the Battle of Floating Flowers, a panel was moving.

You step backwards towards where you had laid down Burden, ready to draw it.

Out emerged Doji Makoto, the young teenager, looks up at you and hastily kotows to you.

"Doji-san...to what do I owe the pleasure?" You ask after a few moments.

"Well I uh...wanted to talk to you one on one my Emperor...without my regent to interfere." Makoto says.

His voice breaks, but you don't hold it against him. That age had your voice breaking too, you suspect that he'll end up having a fine singing voice though one to make women and men happy.

"That so?" You ask, gesturing for Makoto to sit down on the provided cushions.

Everyone needs a break sometimes, but maybe doesn't want to climb down the tower that the dojo was in first. Makoto rises up from his position and goes to sit on them, you take a cloth and wipe yourself down before sitting beside him.

"Hai, It's not that Daidoji-sensei isn't a good man he is. It's...just that him and Asahina-sensei, they want me to be like them...not like my mother." Makoto says.

"Your mother was someone I respected and trusted a lot. We were all lesser for having lost her." You say.

"Thank you my Emperor. I remember her as my mother, strong, proud, determined to do what was right, not what was easy. She cared about me, even if she never gave me the sibling we both wanted." Makoto says.

"As I recall your father spent most of his time keeping the Crane and Lion alliance together by staying with the Lion..." you say.

And Doji no Ikoma Kusari had simply stayed with the Lion rather than watch his son be raised by someone else. You hadn't pressed too deeply into that conflict.
Perhaps you should have.

"Hai...and he was never happy as a Crane. I think because he respected my mother, he endured...but when she passed." Makoto shrugs.

The happy smile on his face belies the intense bitterness you sense just beneath the surface.

"He should be proud of the samurai you are becoming anyways Doji-san." You say.

"Thank you my Emperor. That's actually kind of what I want to ask you. My mother said that I could trust you to be honest. And I..." Makoto pauses trying to put into words something that had eluded me.

"Want to ask you a question, it might be too much though, but I trust my mother's words...is it permitted to be personal my Emperor?"

You take a long breath. He was a boy becoming a man. How many times had you just wanted to ask someone for an honest opinion? How many times had you held back because you were the Emperor and couldn't let yourself look weak?

Too many times, in retrospect. But you were young, so determined to be seen as strong against the hostile clans. Perhaps you just want to indulge in being a father for a son. You love Kouya your son, just as much as his sister Kaya. But they are babies, and for all their adorable features, they don't really do...father child talks, not yet anyways.

"Very well, ask then." You say.

"What should...I do about my father? Daidoji-sensei and Asahina-sensei say to forget him. He's not a Crane, he's Lion, and he's made his choice. But did he? I don't know. Maybe he just...maybe my sensei didn't let him come back. Should I try to get him back?" Makoto's smile breaks as the stream of questions.

"I know you lost your father but if you had the chance to get him back...would you? Even though he didn't come for you when he could have?"

They were different times then. Your father's ten year reign had been...chaotic to say the least.

But that still leaves you to answer Makoto's question and in a way your own.
You don't know why Kusari decided to stay with his birth clan instead of returning home. But you know Takeshi, who had never really known your father would gladly send Kusari to Makoto if asked.

But was that a good idea?
The Crane Lion alliance had broken as the Unicorn had been removed as a major force in politics with the change of your schooling for Minoru. The Crane and Lion even now glared at each other over the province of Kosaten.

Reaching out for his father it could hurt him politically, and the son of Domotai was always going to struggle with the Daidoji anyways.

But at the same time...you would have liked a real chance to be with your father if given a choice, so you understand the motive.

So what advice would you give young Makoto?

AN: Normally I'd tally it up but this was unanimous.

Huh. Well, one thing is, if his father would not be interested in coming back, then it seems like dragging him back would be strictly worse than just knowing that he did not wish to return. So, one way to do it would be to arrange for a meeting between the two that would be sufficiently deniable and/or limited to let them at least converse without undue political cost. As a relatively simple example, we could certainly express a mild-but-Imperial preference to the appropriate people the boy attend the next Winter Court as part of the Crane delegation... and on the other side express a similar preference to other appropriate people that the father do the same as part of the Lion. Possibly express mild preferences at the event itself that will lead to them in the same room without any curious ears or loose tongues about. As a favor to a man who is going to be a direct vassal, who was son to one of our most loyal allies? This is a small thing.

I'm not sure this is the right answer, but it is an answer, and (other than the delay) would give the boy much of what he needs at minimal cost (other than a feeling of mild gratitude/obligation to his Mikado, which I personally do not choose to see as a downside).

I think I'm broadly on the same page that the correct solution is to get the two actually talking, I was just going to suggest letters and stuff.

There are a few political implications here, not all of them that Makoto is aware of.

First and foremost is that the Lion/Crane Alliance that Makoto's dad represented by marriage to his mom.

The Lion alliance was fairly unpopular for various reasons. Most relating to the fact that for the last thousand years the Lion and Crane have at various times tried to kill each other and outside of the Crab, the Lion did the most to hurt the Crane during the Clan Wars. And vice versa for the Lion, it was really only Domotai herself and maybe the heirs she hand trained that could have kept them going. With Takeshi in charge the political will just wasn't there. So even if from a pure realpolitik perspective the Lion and Crane are two great tastes that taste great together. It was never going to work long term.

However, most people are aware of that realpolitik reasoning. So Makoto talking to his dad again could indeed signal that Makoto wants to resume the highly unpopular alliance. It's unclear if Takeshi would go for this or prefer not to have the fight with his wife. But very few Crane want that.

It could also mean that Makoto feels more loyalty to the Lion than he does the Crane, a charge Domotai faced many times, granted one that she manage to parry with your support.

There's also potentially an implicit suggestion that Makoto doesn't trust his advisors, and all the attendant problems with that. (This largely depends on what Makoto writes.

Lastly, Kusari is still Makoto's father. His blessing for Makoto's betrothal can potentially set up prestige for the union, or give it something of a bad omen. It's hard to say.

Now that's all political implications.

For Makoto the person. He's not really asking 'how do I get in touch with my dad' he can figure that out himself.

Makoto's asking if he should

If the bond of parenthood is important enough to take risks for. Because Makoto doesn't really know Kusari that well. What he remembers is that his father cared for him, but his father didn't stay for him. But with the filial piety in the culture, there's a deep part of Makoto that wants to still have a dad, or at least to know why Kusari never came back.

Now the answer is potentially emotionally devastating. So Makoto is looking to the Emperor the 'Father of the Empire' to answer the question of whether it's a good idea for him as a person to try and reconnect with his father.

I would support a vote that tells him to reconnect. I don't think the political overtones of it will go 100% a good way, but I think it's important to Hisao's continuing character development.

Ah yes Rokugan, where having emotions is a failing as a human being.
Its been a while.

I suppose from an Otomo PoV breaking up the alliance is what we want. Keep the clans separated and all that.

I suppose from an Otomo PoV breaking up the alliance is what we want. Keep the clans separated and all that.
The Otomo want what we want. The traditional Otomo role has been to ensure that the clans are weak enough that they continue to bow to the Emperor, but that depends heavily on the situation.

I think that, if anything, this makes me like the "Emperor expresses mild preferences about next Winter Court" plan. Among other things, if the results are emotionally devastating for Makoto... it allows us to keep a brief protected space with a sympathetic Emperor in it for the aftermath.

[x] Plan the Imperial Whim
-[x] Acknowledge how important this all is to him, while also helping him understand more about the political situation.
-[x] Offer to arrange an opportunity for him to speak with his Father at the next Winter Court without the political costs.
-[x] Express to the Crane a mild-but-Imperial preference that Makoto attend next year's Winter Court... wherever it is that we hold next year's Winter Court.
-[x] Make a small request of our brother that one Doji no Ikoma Kusari attend the next Winter Court. Try to unbend enough to actually connect with the man emotionally, at least a little. Make an effort. Don't admit that you're making an effort, of course, but make an effort anyway.
-[x] Plan to arrange for them to both meet you privately at the same time at said court, let them have their discussion, and then be there with Makoto for the aftermath.

...because there are perks to this job as well as downsides.

If the emperors taking the time and effort to set up this meeting, above and beyond what is needed, I feel like it won't come across as a neutral act, but rather that the emperor is hoping for reconciliation.
Well, it's not a neutral act. It's us actively supporting a man who's going to be our direct vassal, by setting up the interaction in a way that is not politically costly for him. We're actively supporting one of the two people in this discussion, and we don't care all that much about the other except to the degree that he affects the first (and the fact that it would be preferable to be able to hand him back to our brother largely undamaged once we're done). That's not neutral.

Now, it's true that one Doji no Ikoma Kusari may feel the Weight of the Emperor's Regard laying a bit heavily on his shoulders on this one, and that's likely to skew his behaviors a bit... but this is Rokugan. Everyone does everything social in an environment where "what is expected" has a major impact on what things they're willing to admit, and what emotions they're willing to show. On the other hand, we're still the Emperor, so we get to cheat. We can make a comment or two to the man about what we expect from him in the coming discussion (perhaps just a broad implication), and that, too, will have a major impact on how he carries out his side of the discussion. I'm thinking that what we want from him in this case is honesty.

Discretely providing closure to the two of them doesn't cost much favorwise and could pay dividends in the future of the dynasty.

However could there be other reasons why their relationship is not on good terms? Do we know if Doji no Ikoma Kusari has remarried and has other children?

That Makoto might not actually be his son. The public "Truth" isn't always true

Hisao doesn't know specifically why Kusari cut ties, offhand at least. Although he could guess that it's because Kusari and Kikaze butted heads over something. Or that Kusari assessed that Lion Dad in a time of Crane proto-nationalism was a bad call for keeping things stable.

In that case things will be difficult. Kusari believing it is his duty to stay away and cut ties is going to make things hard to change his mind. That i'm not sure we should try that hard in that case if might mean war between the clans instead of peace. Hopefully all those early investments are either already paying off or looking like they will soonish. Ultimately if this is a personal matter I'm not sure where the line between concerned and compassionate Emperor crosses over into outright interference in interclan matters happens.

I have no intention of forcing them to reestablish the connection. That's not what this is for. This is for helping our vassal get closure, one way or the other. As for stayign away... if the Emperor's Will indicates that you are to be present, then it is your duty to be present.

As far as a Lion/Crane war, the only looking threats to the Emperor that I can recall are limits on the Jade supplies (which this will have no impact on) and the Yodotai. I don't think the Yodotai were at the gate just yet, which means that if a war is to happen, this is a decent time for it.

Regarding the Yodotai, is there any canon conflicts with them that we can use to guesstimate how much prep is needed to win against them? I know the Romans were rather good at conquering for much of their history but I am not sure how the Yodotai stack up to them.
