Vordt of the Boreal Valley 2

(Hawkwood's Arrival: 16 - 10 = 6/100)

Vordt continues his approach, seemingly cautious. You have no desire to do the same, however. Aggression is what let you beat Gundyr, so odds are it's what will work here too.

(The Glacier and the Wave: 53 + 10 = 63/100 vs 63/100)

You rush towards the enormous armored monster, hoping to catch him by surprise. In response, Vordt merely raises his left arm, his entire upper left body rising with it, before he slams it back down. You barely manage to dodge out of the way before the spot you were just standing is pulverized into a newly formed crater by his absurdly sized mace.

D̶̳̖̜͖̟̻̦̋͂Ḭ̴̼̤̙͈̃̇͝͠E̷͕̭͇͈͈̐̋̀̆̍̾͠

"Could you not?!" You yell as he madly swings his mace around in a flurry of blows you are only narrowly able to avoid. Vordt roars, consumed by rage as he smashes a gauntlet clad hand against the ground, pulping several more corpses in the process. You're glad you haven't had anything to eat yet, because you're not sure how long you would've kept it down.

(An Iceberg against the Ocean: 83 + 10 = 93/100 vs 2/100)

Finally, you manage to spot an opening as Vordt tries to go for another overhead strike. His huge form rises up as his upper body lifts into the air to try and smite you down, but when Vordt reaches his full height, he finds his field of view empty of targets.

Owing to the beast's confusion, you manage to slip in beneath him and shove a blade into each of the gaps in his armor by his joints hilt deep. Vordt grunts in pain as black blood leaks from the wounds, his huge frame suddenly left off-balance by the metal piercing through his flesh.

Ÿ̷̙̖̫̠́̒̓̃́́̚̕̕O̸̥̖̠̭̹̯͒̈́̑͆̀̀̏͊̕͝U̷̡̠͕̭̥̗͖͔͛̌̇̍̊̌̽̕͝

Thinking quickly, you don't stay still long enough to wonder what's going to happen, barely managing to hurl yourself out from under him before his entire mass is dropped against the ground, blowing up a wave of newly formed dust from the force of the impact against the stone. You cough out a mouthful of rubble and wipe your eyes clear of debris, but are otherwise perfectly fine.

(Drifting Ice Floe: 69 + 10 = 79/100 vs 6/100)

Both you and Vordt stand up, one unharmed, the other leaking blood with every step taken. Vordt lets out an irritated growl as he charges towards you, closing the gap much faster than you would have expected someone like him to have been able to. You dodge out of the way, only for Vordt to quickly turn around and do the same thing, leaving you to frantically roll out of the way as he continues to try and smash you into the stone with his much larger form.

Even though he continues to leave a trail of black blood with every step he makes, Vordt seems large unconcerned, more focused on trying to smash you into the paste than worry about his injuries. This doesn't mean that he is completely unthinking, however, something you realize as you find yourself boxed into a corner by his constant offensive. Vordt slowly approaches you only more, before letting out a strike with his mace that you barely avoid, as you find yourself quickly running out of room. Vordt snarls in frustration, before he lets out another wild flurry of blows, that, while savage, are restricted by the ever shrinking confines he's forced you into. This doesn't seem to stop him from continuing, each blow striking walls and raining bits of stone down from above. Finally, he goes for another overhead smash, his body rising once more, although noticeably more wobbly than before.

B̴̖̙͑̋̚̕A̷͍͑S̶̗̲͍̓ͅṮ̶̪̗̅A̶̡̢̬̬̐̾̔R̵̮̯̳̒̈͝D̶̖̆̀

With a roar full of hatred, Vordt swings his mace down, smashing it against the wall with all the strength he can muster. With a loud boom, the mace cleaves through several meters of stone, almost making it the whole way through, and leaving a massive crater in the wall. The strike releases a storm of rubble that quickly fills the air with even more obscuring dust. As Vordt tears his mace out of the ruined stonework, you use the cover to get in close. Conjuring several more blades, you rush towards his thighs in an attempt to cripple the massive creature.

(Pain and Rage: 6 + 10 = 16/100 vs 93/100)
You realize your mistake a moment too late. As your blades pierce into his thighs, Vordt grunts out in pain, but doesn't seem to be concerned with the wound. Rather, his right hand suddenly appears out of the cloud of dust, grabbing hold of you. Slowly, he raises you up to his face, or rather his helmet, staring directly at you for a moment. He seems to examine you with huge, dried, bloodshot eyes, never once blinking as he does so. His grip tightens as he lets out another screeching howl that you can physically feel from the utter volume,

Ş̸̧̢̧͚̞͔̜͊̆Ú̷͖̻͋̎́̑̅̕̕L̸̼͇̻̣̈̀̾̿Y̸̙͊̇̀̎̆̊̓̂͆̀V̷͉̼̞͚͖̠̽A̴̟̝̯̲͉͇̔̀̃͛͛̾̚͜͝ͅH̴̨̭͍͖̪͎̲͍͂̄͊̽̄̈́ͅṆ̶̪̩͚͈̙̣̪̘́̈́̐

Vordt smashes you against the ground, before he launches you away from himself, sending you skidding across the floor. Most of the skin on your limbs is either torn open by the rough stonework, or burned away by the friction. You slam against the wall with enough force that you can feel your bones creak and crack, and collapse in an unceremonious heap.

Sayaka takes 9 points of damage.

You quickly shut off the sensation in your limbs lest you black out from the pain. Standing back up proves to be a bit more difficult than before, most likely owing to just how much less meat there is on your legs, but it proves to not be too much of an issue once you focus. Hopefully it stays that way.

It's then that the temperature all around you plummets. Looking up, you find Vordt, his mace slammed against the ground. The eye holes in his canine-esque helmet are now glowing a pale blue, covering up the horrifying display from before. Every time he exhales, a gust of freezing wind buffets against you. Vordt stomps against the ground once again, and howls in rage.

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to finalize a system for bosses, and I've settled on something that I feel works.
Each 'round' for a boss fight has 4 rolls, and Sayaka (and party members) and the boss roll separately opposing each other. Hopefully this won't end up changing like every other system so far ;_;

Hmm, we took 9 damage on that near critfail/VortCrit. That's rather scary with 4 rounds a turn.

I say we [] Heal for 4, bring us back up to a even 15, I would like to keep a buffer of health so that a bad turn won't OTK us, but on the flipside, looking at the VortCrit, he's fully capable of One shotting us from full health. So, I'd rather focus on ending the fight quickly.

Perhaps we should now go for the neck? or maybe the eyes? I would like to matador him into the Arch/Pillar things along the sides of the arena to give us some openings, since he's well and truly pissed by now. Any other ideas?

Vordt got a near crit success vs your near crit failure while you guys were focusing on trying to be aggressive, and then rolled near the highest possible damage he could have dealt in the scenario (Max being 10). So while he hypothetically could just oneshot you instantly if you hypothetically rolled poorly enough (and he also rolled successfully enough) it would take several factors for that to happen. I usually give bonuses for write ins, which is definitely not because it saves me the effort of trying to figure out combat strategy. just in case to hopefully help prevent this from happening (and penalties if you hypothetically choose to do something completely stupid, which you haven't yet so props to that).

But at the end of the day, it is Dark Souls, so getting instantly slam jammed after walking through a fog gate is pretty much part of the experience. Do note that I'm not trying to tempt you into going Turbo Overdrive Aggression Mode Maximum Power. If you feel the need to play safe, then by all means do so. I'm trying to avoid having things be full on decided by RNG if I can help it.

Grind him down, I think. Until we pick up a more reliable ranged option, that's really all we can do.

For clarity's sake, I looked over some stuff and realized that I had, for some ungodly reason, put a cap on healing per round, which is very dumb. Not sure what I was thinking at the time, but it probably wasn't very much, if at all.
So uh, yeah, that isn't there anymore.

Sorry for the constant changing of mechanics, I wanted to try and see if I could make a functional system for the quest, but now it's starting to feel a bit like a live-service game in terms of quality (or lack thereof). Well, I've already dug myself into this hole, so I may as well try and get it to work, although if anyone has any feedback or ideas on how to make things less bad, I'd very much appreciate it.

Personally figured Sayaka probably spends more power if healing a lot very fast but much less if she's healing slowly/helping natural healing

Vordt of the Boreal Valley 3
(Hawkwood's Arrival: 14/100)
With a grunt of effort and a moment of focus, the flesh of your legs begins to reknit itself back together, the bits that now litter the floor instead being replaced.

Sayaka restores 4 HP. Now 15/20.
Once you no longer feel like you're at risk of collapsing, you fix your ears so that you can hear any noise besides a loud ringing that refuses to go away and Vordt's endless outbursts. The first thing sound you pick up is of metal impacting against stone. Eyes widening, you spin around-

(Bestial Wrath: 56 + 10 = 66/100 vs 87 + 10 = 97/100

-only to be hit head on by a charging Vordt. You're sent flying through the air once more, as Vordt slides to a stop. Bits of his hulking metal suit grind against the ground as he does, the friction helping to bring him to a halt.

Sayaka takes (1d4) 3 damage.

(Surprise Counter: 83 + 10 = 93 vs 16 + 10 = 26)

You spin yourself around in mid-air, allowing you to land with your feet against the wall, rather than just smashing into it once again. Then, you push yourself off the wall with with enough force to leave the stone cracked, and springboard yourself back at Vordt, who had just finished turning back around from his charge. You can actually see his eyes widen, the glow from his helmet actually increasing in brightness as you fly right back at him.

1d2: 2

Taking aim, you angle your sword at the eye socket of Vordt's helmet, blade first. With a yell, you smash into him, your blade piercing directly into his left eye socket. Vordt howls in agony, as he swings his head against the wall, trying to crush you. You quickly leap off avoiding the arm he had sent to try and grab a hold of you,

As you land on solid ground once again, Vordt yanks the sword out of his eye, a splatter of black blood spraying against the floor as he does so. He turns his head, oddly peaceful in the midst of the fight, as if he only now noticed where he was. The moment doesn't last, as his hands fly to his helmet as an oddly familiar cry echos through the arena.

One filled to the brim with despair, buried beneath anger and pain.
One that can't help but lash out at everything around them.
One desperate for an end of any kind.

M̵͔͛Ȧ̸̻K̷̛͍E̷̲̕ ̴͉͕̙̍̄Ị̷̧͑̃̕T̶̫̝̜̄͆̈́S̴̨̼̯͖͎̾͘ ̴̲̖̥̦͇̲̺̣͑͊̓̏̇̚͘͝͝T̴͚͈̫̫̈͑͑ ̴̧̦̟̺̖̗͖̥̬̅͒̈́ ̵̨̮͗̏Ǫ̵̬̦̖̣͕̻̠͙̊͒̉͂̿ ̸͙̰̳̃͛̓͐̐̒̚ ̶͔̮̻̈̊ ̷͓͐ ̴̨̪̥͇̟̺̖̻͚̓͑͑̇͑P̶̛̝̖̬͓̤͂̏͗͗̑͜͝͝

(Water and Ice: 54 + 10 = 64 vs 44 + 10 = 54)

Vordt roars as he charges once again, his extremities smashing against the ground as he rushes his massive frame directly at you. You roll out of the way, instead hearing his plate armor scrape against the ground as he grinds to a halt. Right as you turn to face him, you see him leap at you mace aimed to crush you into bits of meat, and throw yourself out of the way again. Vordt's mace continues sailing through the air, smashes into the pillar at the corner of the arena, quickly tunneling through the stone until it finally ceases to move. Vordt tugs the handle, trying to pull it back out, but finds it to be stuck.

Well, if he's unarmed, then this should be eas-

(Freezing Winds: 6 + 10 = 16 vs 74 + 10 = 84)

Vordt exhales, sending a wave of cold air right at you. The gust of wind blows against you, colder than anything you've ever felt before. This gust quickly turns into a full fledged storm, and you lose sensation in your body entirely. You try and move out of the way, but your body is unable to go faster than a snail's pace. Times seems to slow down as you watch Vordt's gauntlet come flying down directly at you.

Finally, Vordt's fist smashes you against the floor, along with breaking what feels like every bone in your body in the process, judging by the sudden burst of pain that floods your body as the numbness from the cold wears off. You quickly shut it off, your body quickly returning to a total lack of sensation. Better that than leaving you screaming in pain.

Sayaka takes (1d8) 4 damage.

You push yourself back up, trying to ignore the fracture in your left arm that's broken through the skin. Luckily your legs seem able to still support your weight, so you're still in this. Vordt seems almost surprised by this, before he instead tries to smash you back into the floor once more. However, his fist merely impacts against the stone floor as you toss yourself out of the way.

Vordt of the Boreal Valley: Late Arrival
(Hawkwood's Arrival 97 + 10 = 107/100)
There's a faint noise in the background, the sound reverberating throughout the arena. Turning your head, you spot a shape emerging from the weird wall that's sealing the area off. You quickly begin to recognize details, with the mismatched leather and chainmail belonging to only one possible person.

"Hawkwood!" you call out, relieved to see him, and to also finally get some help.

Hawkwood takes one look at you, and his face pales. "What are you doing?!"

"He's almost down, just help me finish him off!" You yell, as you narrowly avoid Vordt trying to smash you into paste.

"How are you even moving right now?! Your fingers are as blue as your hair!"

You pause, noting the severe frostbite that seems to have rendered your fingers a dark blue.

"Magic! Don't worry about it!" You yell, taking a moment to heal your limbs back to a functional state before another smash from Vordt interrupts any further healing attempts. Guess you're stuck with blue fingers for now.

Sayaka regains 3 HP (10/20).

Hawkwood seems to want to say something else, but seems to decide it can wait as he draws his sword, albeit reluctantly.

(76 + 10 + 15 (Hawkwood) = 101/100 vs 98 + 10 = 108/100)
It was now two against one, which logically would make things easier than before.

Unfortunately, things are never that simple. Vordt finally stops his offensive directed at you, seeming to have noticed that someone else has finally showed up. Turning his head, he lets out a growl as he stomps forward towards Hawkwood. Vordt quickly speeds up, entering a wild frenzy as he charges, letting out a blood chilling roar of unadulterated rage.

A thin layer of ice forms beneath him as he moves, thickening as he stampedes. Hawkwood rolls to the side, narrowly avoiding the Watchdog's charge. Meanwhile, you take the oppurtunity to try and get in close on Vordt.

It's then that Vordt spins around, his arm nearly smashing into you. Instead he smashes the thick layer of ice that he had just formed, sending shards of ice flying everywhere. Small bits shatter as they impact against stone, while several chunks are blocked by Hawkwood's shield. Stuck in the center, however, you struggle to avoid being sliced to ribbons, but are lucky enough to emerge with only numerous cuts, none of which are particularly deep. Probably makes you look awful, but scars don't seem to be an issue for you, so that's something to be thankful for.

(Sayaka takes 2 damage.)

(Rage of the Dying: 54 + 10 + 15 (Hawkwood) = 79/100 vs 72 + 10 = 82/100)

Vordt takes the opportunity to take ahold of his mace once again. There's a loud cracking noise as he pulls the mace head through the wall, throwing up yet more rubble in the process. You cover your eyes, instead trying to listen for the noise of the massive beast moving. The arena remains oddly quiet, with only the distant sounds of combat coming from the Castle itself. Finally, as the dust clears, motion returns as everyone moves at once.

Vordt has returned to going for wild sweeps with his mace, most likely in hopes of hitting both you and Hawkwood at once.

"Stay on that side of him!" You hear Hawkwood yell out to you as he narrowly avoids one of Vordt's swings. "He can't hit us both!"

"Got it!" You yell as Vordt twists around to try and hit you next.

(Last Stand: 54 + 10 + 15 (Hawkwood) = 79/100 vs 72 + 10 = 82/100)
You duck and weave your way out of Vordt's attacks, never being hit but never having a moment to try and get any hits in. Somehow, he's managing to match the efforts of two people by himself. Every now and then he's twist his head around to you and unleash another freezing gale, but you've learned your lesson from before, and manage to avoid any further attempts by him.

You note that Vordt has gone oddly quiet, no longer roaring or howling as he fights. The only noise comes from his attacks, and both you and Hawkwood evading them desperately.

(La Pace della Morte: 94 + 10 + 15 (Hawkwood) = 119/100 vs 14 + 10 = 24/100)

However, this cannot continue forever. Vordt's strength, no matter how incredible, finally begins to wear out after such an extended fight. His movements slow, and his swings begin to lack the shattering force with which he has torn apart the surrounding area. After several minutes, Vordt stumbles after a swing, giving you and Hawkwood both an opening.

Hawkwood jams his sword into Vordt's knee and twists, tearing apart the tendon. The Watchdog of Irithyll stumbles forward, struggling to remain upright. That's when you leap up and stab your sword into Vordt's throat from below. Vordt limbs seem to finally give out on him, his body crashing against the ground with enough force that it almost knocked you over in the process.

Slowly, his hands rise to his neck, his left taking hold of the blade, struggling to pull it out. His attempts become weaker and weaker, until his arm lacks the strength to even continue to attempt to do so.

"Gwen... ivar." Vordt wheezes out, his voice audible despite being muffled by his helmet. Slowly, his head turns, staring directly at you. You can't say anything for sure, but the way he looks at you, it feels like he's almost thankful.

The bright blue light emitting from his helmet seems to vanish as his eyes close.

Finally, after so long, his armored bulk falls still, granted the rest he deserves.

A bright yellow clump, coated with specks of blue and black, floats through the air to you from Vordt's corpse, before settling in your hands. You pocket it for later without thinking.

As the adrenaline finally begins to wear off, you look around at the impromptu arena, littered with gore and viscera, and feel a wave of nausea overtake you. The odor of the corpses permeating the area prevents you from simply shutting your eyes to avoid it. Stumbling over to the side, you can't stop yourself from vomiting out of revulsion.

You feel a warm glow in your chest, as the tears in your flesh and cracks in your bones seem to mend themselves back into form. You watch as your body seems to repair itself, before a burst of flame springs from the ground, washing over you (and surprisingly not burning you away) when you open your eyes, the gore is gone, although Vordt's corpse and all of the damage from the fight still remain.

Additionally, you see something you are VERY thankful of: a bonfire. It seems to have simply sprouted out of the ground, although you're not complaining.

You stumble over to the bonfire, moving your hand to light it as you were shown before. The flames burst to life, and that comfortable warmth fills you once more.

(Hawkwood's Response: 4/100)

"Wolf's Blood, you actually went and did it." Hawkwood says from behind you. You note the rather irritated tone.

"What do you mean?" You ask with a tilt of your head.

"What do I mean? What I mean is what were you thinking, fighting something like that?! I'd ask if you had a death wish, but by all rights you shouldn't even be alive." Hawkwood almost growls out at you.

"Well I'm sorry that I had to fight a giant armored dog with a mace and magical ice breath alone." You retort as you stand back up. At the very least you can feel things again, something for which you are greatly thankful for.

"You're not seriously thinking of continuing on?" Hawkwood asks.

"And if I am?"

Hawkwood levels a stare at you. "The only thing you're going to find following this path is pain and suffering without end, until you curl up by the side of the road and give up on everything, like all the others."

"Others? What others?"

"What, did you think we were the only ones that were sent?" Hawkwood scoffs. "They've been shoveling through ash, and throwing whoever they find in the hopes that one of the failures can succeed."

"Why do you just want to give up? Why do you keep trying to make me give up?!" You yell back at him.

"Because I've lost everything once already!" Hawkwood shouts right back. "I gave years of my life to the Watchers, and all I got was mockery! I threw myself into the Flame out of guilt! Can you guess what that got me?" Hawkwood is shouting at this point, his standard monotone having vanished. "Nothing! I got nothing for burning myself alive beyond being rejected for having even tried!"

"But what does that have to do with me?!"

Hawkwood falls silent. Soon, he turns his gaze, unable to match your glare. He takes a deep breath, seeming to calm himself before he continues.

"I grew up in a small village in Farron. I..." He pauses, evidently uncomfortable with the subject. "I had a younger sister."

What does he me- Oh. Had.

"That doesn't mean you can just yell at me and expect me to listen to you. I'm not her." You grumble.

"I can't just let you get yourself killed over and over. I'd never be able to forgive myself." Hawkwood sighs. "Why do are you so determined to keep on going like this?"

"Because I don't want to just sit around doing nothing for the next who the hell knows?" You lash back at him, much to his evident surprise. "I woke up here two days ago, with no idea what happened to literally everyone I've ever known! Now I just have to cross my fingers and hope that they're all perfectly fine, with no way of knowing for sure!"

"I..." You realize you're tearing up, but you ignore it. "I can't sit around doing nothing! If I do, all I can think about is how much I screwed up my own life, and how much of a fucking idiot I am!" You try and blink away the tears as Hawkwood stares at you, but you can't stop yourself. "I just want to go home..."

(A Tree Overlooking the Sea: 97 - 25 = 74/100) DC of 70
Hawkwood remains silent, unsure of what to do while you sit there and cry. You were always good at bottling things up, but you're surprised you made it this long. After a few minutes

"A giant armored dog almost killed you. You really think you stand a chance against a full fledged Lord of Cinder?" He finally says.

"I'd rather find out than sit around being miserable." You mutter out as a reply, sniffing.

"Then I'll accompany you until you realize your error." Hawkwood says finally.

"Well isn't this just heartwarming?" A voice calls out.

Turning your head, you see an ordinary Lothric Knight approaching. Ordinary, that is, except for the red spear in their hand. Looking at it brings back flashes of memory. Thankfully, or maybe unfortunately, the spearhead is long and sharp, lacking the width of a certain other red spear user.

As Kallia nears you, she seems to examine the damage to the surroundings.

"I see you've handled the Watchdog. I was looking forward to fighting it, too, but such is life." Kallia says with a shrug after she finishes her inspection. "Probably couldn't have killed it myself, but would've been a hell of a fight." She seems to stare at Vordt's corpse for longer than most would feel to be strictly necessary.

"So why are you here?" Hawkwood asks, eyebrow raised.

"Oh right, the High Priestess wanted me to give you this." She tosses Hawkwood a stick with a piece of crude white cloth attached to it. The cloth bears a black circle on on it. "Should help you get out of here."

"What are we supposed to do with this?" Hawkwood asks her in confusion.

"Just walk over and raise it up by the cliffside. At least, that's what she said to do, but beyond that I have no idea."

Job done, Kallia simply walks away, leaving the two of you alone once more.

Vordt, once a loyal Blade of the Darkmoon long ago, was purposefully broken by Sulyvahn as an example to those who resisted his rule. When the Dancer became an Outrider Knight, Vordt soon followed right behind her.

Sorry for how long this took. This post took a lot of effort for me because oh god it didn't want to be written. Writer's block is fun, especially when it's with one of the more important posts.
Kind of nice to finally have a post over 2k word length. It's really nothing compared to most of the other quests on this site, but it's an improvement for me at least. Happy to almost be done with the first area of the game.

Also, fun with dice once again. I still can't believe that you passed that check with Hawkwood.

I've got the strangest feeling that these might be the same issue. Let's hope we haven't made too big a mistake.

Also, thanks for updating again. It seems our options are slowly increasing in number.

Did he get flashbacks? All of a sudden facing a sword wielding Knight-Dancer and a Wolf of a Knight.

Poor Vordt... huh, are we somehow aware of the flavor blurbs on his Soul? It seems like almost something one could do, holding the leftover's of a Being's Soul and just... kind of knowing them at least a little.

Anyway. SL 0 and we have a good chunk of Souls honestly. I'd say stop by at the Shrine and find out about stuff. Freeing what's his name too of course.

I'm... kind of wondering what we might get from Vordt if we really did end up reminding him of his Dancer at the end there. I seem to remember the Dancer also suspected to be a daughter of one of the Goddesses or something too? Hmm...

Its almost too bad the Spear isn't more obviously a recreation of Kyouko's, so we could ask about it and her.
