Build Options (And How They Work)
I feel that I should probably clarify what each build actually does rather than have any misunderstandings (Which I probably should've done yesterday, but that would require me to be in any way competent). Hopefully this will help clear things up for everyone.

Strength: Going for a strength build is probably the most straight forward option. You hit things really hard, and they go splat. Going for a strength build means you would probably want to invest heavily in health (so you can take hits) and maybe a bit in faith for extra healing and things like magic barrier if you feel it worthwhile.

Dexterity: In terms of a Dex build, you'll be focusing more on speed and accuracy over slamming things really hard. You'll have avoidance essentially being your primary defense (although investing in a bit of health is still wise). Adding in some intelligence would allow you to go for a glass cannon build, with weapon buffs making up for your lower strength value essentially.

Intelligence: A full on int build means dumping into attunement and Intelligence. This is the most boring option to be perfectly honest, since it is essentially just standing around shooting lasers, but it is still an option. Intelligence will also help you understand how magic, and thus things related to the concept of the 'Soul' function.

Faith: A full faith build lets you focus on utility, with things like force, magic barrier, caressing tears, and other things (If you go down this route, expect to see some original miracles to add some more variety). Faith also helps you understand the more esoteric factors of the world, such as the nature of the Flame, the nature of the Dark, etc.

Quality (Strength + Dex): The classic go big or go home build: Hit hard and move fast, because casting is for losers. What it lacks in utility, it makes up for in reliability, since you don't have to depend on other factors to guarantee your effectiveness in a fight.

Pyromancy (Int + Faith + Other): Pyromancy lets you get some decent casting in for much lower points cost, thus letting you put points into other things instead. It also ties into the next option, since a Pyromancy build also can function as a stepping stone in terms of build development.

Hex (Int + Faith but a lot more): Hexing is the true glass cannon option. You'll have very few points in not dying, but you'll have a wide variety of casting options. You'll have to survive off of your own wits, so if you plan on going a hex build, be prepared to actually have to plan out fights.

Luck: Luck is the most unique option, and essentially lets you specialize in Abyssal effects, which includes native magical girl abilities (Int helps you in understanding how they work, Faith lets you understand why they work, and Luck gives you access to more advanced options). Points in luck increase maximum Corruption, give bonuses to save rolls, affect scaling with certain weapons, and will give you bonuses when you have either low or high Corruption.

Other: If you want to do some wacky other build, feel free. I was just listing options off the top of my head. Want to go a Luck/Pyro build? It'll be weird, but you might be able to pull it off.

While I'm writing this, I may as well also explain how Weapon Arts work. Essentially, each weapon has a different weapon art that gives that weapon a unique effect, and thus a reason to use it. So far the normal cutlass can be copied infinitely, the Astoran Straight Sword can become blessed, and the Lothric Knight Sword specializes in thrusts aimed at an enemies' vitals. This is mostly to give weapon swapping an actual purpose.

I was personally looking forward to that being sort of obscure, I guess. I feel that build options don't need to be as clear when we're running a more narrative quest, where the stats mean something other than basic competency and equipment requirements (not that I mean that I dislike knowing more about how neat it is).

However, Sayaka choosing the meme build and actually getting something useful out of it is pretty great too. Plus, it's a great character choice.

Yeah, I was weighing between keeping it obscure or not, and decided that I may as well just be upfront about it. That being said, which stat you choose to focus on actually will affect the narrative. How it will do so will vary greatly, sometimes in ways you might not expect (actually you honestly might expect it but let me try and sound cool).

There have been a lot of voters this time around, and Actually Sayaka is in the lead. I guess the meme is powerful.

Personally, I'd like to get to the intelligence and faith skill threshold for a few pyromancies, get enough points in strength to allow Sayaka to wield large swords, get a few attunement slots and throw everything else into vigor and luck. Mostly luck.

Gaint ass sword in one hand, fire in the other, and lots of weird effects all around, that's the name of my game.

By the by, I've been thinking, if that Flame Gem is what's left of Kyouko... We should let Ludleth take a look at it perhaps? Titanite and such do absorb souls, and if I'm understanding correctly the way Magical Girl powers work within the context of Dark Souls metaphysics, then that gem may well either contain some of her soul, or may even *be* her soul coalesced into crystalline form.

If we wanted to go super long Frankenstein game we could even see about somehow trying to 'refine' the gem into a real soul gem and then figure out some way to create an empty body and see if we can bring her back, but... That's probably impossible.

So I'd settle for seeing if we can transpose her spear or something from what's left of her. Something to remember her by.

If you want to vote for that, feel free to do so, although you may have to wait until after you get the Transposing Kiln if you want to try doing that specifically.

Would Sayaka even be able to use Kyoko's spear? The thing's not at all pratical in terms of weight distribution and besides, Sayaka is by far moe of a sword person. Kight in shining armour idealism, and all that.

Firelink Shrine 14: The Sword Master
As the Fire Keeper's hand drops, you feel something stirring deep inside you. The chime of bells, the strum of a harp, and, for a brief moment, a lone violin playing faintly in the distance. It seems almost familiar, yet you're sure you've never heard it before. The music ends as soon as it began, but you're well aware that the melody has left you forever changed in some way.

Sayaka gains 10 points in Luck.
Sayaka's maximum grief increases to 2250 from 2000.
Gain New Ability
Every Light Casts a Shadow...
When at or below 500 grief, gain a +5 bonus to save rolls. When at or above 1500 grief, gain a +5 bonus to combat rolls.
They came here, searching for the answer to an unsolvable question. What They found was a flame and the shadow it cast upon the ground, and They knew they had found what they sought.

The Shrine is quiet for a few moments, as you and Hawkwood peacefully take care of a few things. Hawkwood sits at his old spot in the Shrine on the ledge next to the stairs carefully polishing his sword. It seems now that he's taken care of things, it's where he's defaulted to going.

"You ready to head out yet, Sayaka?" Hawkwood finally asks, as you finally finish sorting through everything you've gathered so far. Organizing all of this is a lot more effort than schoolwork ever was, and you doubt you'll ever be able to reach the Hitomi's level, but at least you should be able to find what you're looking for. Hopefully.

You turn your head to reply. "Before we go, I thought that maybe Ishould take a look around the shrine some more, you know?"

"Oh?" Hawkwood asks, raising an eyebrow. "What part haven't you been to yet?"

"Well, when I first got here, there was a left path I didn't bother checking. Or, well, it's a right when you exit the shrine." You say, rubbing your chin.

Hawkwood lets out a snort of supressed laughter. When you turn to look at him, he's looking away, covering his mouth with a hand.

"...What?" He says as you stare at him.

"Oh, nothing, nothing." He says, refusing to meet your eyes. "Feel free to go there if you haven't yet. Just remember to be careful."

Okay, that was weird. Well, it's probably nothing too bad if he didn't bother warning you of anything.

Probably.

You stand up, (carefully) grabbing your bag, and step back onto the ash covered stone stairway. Thankfully, you're starting to become familiar with the layout of the Shrine. As you head for the entrance, you hear Hawkwood chuckle lightly to himself, before he resumes wiping dried blood off of his sword.

It's not exactly what you'd call a difficult journey. You climb the stairs, pass through the entrance way, take a right, and you're pretty much there already. As you enter back outside, the sun shines dimly through a thick layer of cloud, leaving the area feeling monotone and lifeless. You sigh as you walk, passing several hollows who either don't seem to notice you passing, or are trying to actively avoid you.

As you climb one last short staircase, you find yourself nearing the edge of the cliff, with whatever parapet having long since crumbled away, leaving the open drop very much visible. In front of you is another staircase, that leads up what looks like the entrance to the belltower, a cast iron door that is made of more rust than metal at this point.

But none of this is relevent at the moment. It's probably important, but all of that stuff at least makes sense, and thus is something that can wait to be considered. Rather, it's the strange figure standing at the top of the stairs that draws your attention, as you seem to do for him. You gawk at the half naked old man, armed with what looks like a katana, as he bars your way. He remains silent as he stares keenly at you. Neither of you speak, you because you're unable to form a coherent thought at the moment. As for him... He just doesn't, instead standing ramrod straight, his eyes never leaving you.

Just... what? Is this some kind of joke?

You take a step forward. The man begins to draw his blade. You step back and it slides back into its sheath.

"Okay, what is your deal?" You finally ask, after about a minute of having a stare-off.

"I am known as The Sword Master." The man says, narrowing his eyes. You can practically hear the capitalization of the letters from how he speaks. "Have you come to challenge me?"

"I just came to look around, not fight some old dude in a back alleyway."

"Hmph, I should've known better than to expect a challenge from someone like you." The man scoffs, his voice somewhere between smug and muffled by his head being so far up his own ass. "Well then, off you go." He waves you off with his off hand, the other still holding tightly to his sword despite it being sheathed.

"Excuse me?" You reply, mildly offended.

"If you're not here for a duel, then you have no reason to be here." The 'Sword Master' says back. "Now go, lest you scare away someone who will be willing to fight."

Does this guy think he's in an anime or something? It's like he's from a bad shonen or something. The fact that you're so familiar with the genre just makes this ordeal even worse.

"So if you're looking for fights, why are you standing around half naked in the middle of nowhere?" You ask, careful to not make any sudden movements, lest it provoke his bizarre anger.

"I have sworn to not leave this spot until I find a worthy adversary." He slowly begins to draw his blade. "Will it be you?" He says, narrowing his eyes.

He... he can't be serious? Are you hallucinating? Is this some weird sort of fever dream? A quick pinch confirms that, unfortunately, you are awake.

"Alright, that's uh... Great? But can I just get behind you?" You ask. Wait, maybe you could use those binoculars you found earlier to see what's back there? No, he's blocking the door with his body, so that plan's a bust.

"If you wish to enter the Sacred Tower, you must defeat me in combat." He says, his voice rising. There's no way it's called that though, but you refrain on commenting. "I refuse to let even the sight of what lies within escape while I still draw breath!"

Well, this was not what you were expecting, that's for sure. Honestly this is probably the weirdest thing so far, and that's saying something when you consider the 'elevator' design they seem to be fond of.

Well, at least you know why Hawkwood was laughing when you left.

[] This guy can't be serious, right? He's threatening you for trying to use binoculars? Give him a moment, maybe he'll calm down?
[] No. There's no way this is worth it. You have better things to do than to fight some creepy old man who confuses torn, dirty old rags for acceptable clothing.
[] Well if it's a fight he wants...
[] Write in

[] But no, seriously, he's joking, right?

Why does the Sword Master exist?
I literally cannot take him seriously at all, because, I mean, come on. The dude's pretty much a complete joke already. Even the game seems to think so considering the Master's Set description.
At least he's not a complete push over in a fight, but still. I originally tried having this update be a little bit serious, but I couldn't think of a way to actually include him while doing so.
So you get this instead. My apologies.

[jk] "You know I can totally see another entrance to the tower right over there *points to the bridge up and to the right of the hobo* so what's your big plan if somebody just enters the Tower from there?"

[jk] Run back to firekeeper and the old lady, "There's a hobo around the side of the shrine who think's he's in a Shonin Anime!"
