World of Warships, technically free to play, but you need income on par with SECNAV in order to buy all the goodies...

Not inaccurate at all. At least there are some good free ships in the game. I never really planned on spending money on the game, never did in WoT, but their premium ships are sometimes just so shiny. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming USN Cruiser split. Cleveland is getting her beta mojo back, and it'll be awesome.

Read the reviews before you buy. Kidd requires serious skill to play and is difficult to get decent results out of.
One of them kicked my Nagato's butt earlier today. I guess I'm the one lacking skill. On the bright side, finally researched Amagi, but I'm short of about 1,000,000 credits. Time to grind.
Mikasa is pretty fun, pretty certain I got her through an event though. I've got way too many premium ships, and all the premium time. Literally. At one point I had almost 3 years of the stuff, due to those Christmas Crates last year. My buddy dropped close to $400 on those crates, ended up getting a ton of ships from it, including Nikolai.

I would recommend Texas. Her AA absolutely shreds planes, even uptiered, and her guns are pretty decent as well. The only real complaint is that she's slow, like every other low-mid tier American BB. She does maneuver pretty nicely, though, so torpedobeats are a thing you can actually pull off if you spot them early enough. Slam on the brakes and go hard over and she'll turn pretty fast. She's easily one of my favorite battleships in the game, and probably is my favorite American one (and I have a Missouri, which is fun, but nothing quite beats a Dreadnought)
Mikasa is tons of fun, though her dispersion is ridiculous and not in a good way. Her secondaries are OP, if you can get in range, and if you can, watching Mikasa's flanks becoming walls of fire is extremely satisfying. Texas' AA is definitely very powerful, I remember playing as Langley and watching in shock as a whole squadron of torpedo bomber got wiped out in seconds. While I haven't played the ship, I've fought against her time and time again, and she seems like a quite good ship to me.

Excluding premium ships, if you wait long enough, most of the goodies come to you in a limited form through the events and quests and so.

Just started playing WoW yesterday...wish you didn't have to buy ship slots after filling those four freebies. Guess I'll never get beyond Tier IV IJN. :( Not to mention the whole 'anyship flying any flag can fight together' part...very confusing. Be much easier if the game was split Axis and Allies.

Mikasa can be a lot of fun, you just have to realize you're probably never going to land a shot with those main guns. I was really surprised the one time I managed to actually kill something with them at range. Honestly, though, if you've got $40 get the Texas, it's for a good cause and the ship is quite fun. It's a New York with better gun angles and decent AA, basically. I think she's got slightly more HP as well. If you ever are running a mission that requires you to kill planes, find a friend with a CV at that tier and division up, have him drag enemy planes over you. My buddy got something like 48 plane kills in one match with that tactic, I just kept luring the enemy CVs planes into his AA umbrella.

Amagi is an interesting ship, she doesn't get a lot of the respect she deserves. Her old A hull was horrid, but once she's fully upgraded she's probably one of the best ships in the IJN BB line. At mid-close range she's a terror. If the IJN BB line ever gets a Battleship/Battlecruiser split, I could see her going to Tier X with some minor buffs (AA, mostly, maybe some minor gun tweaks). Certainly better than Izumo. Save up your free XP for that one, I finally gave up on her after fully upgrading and realizing, "No, this really isn't better at all" and burned through to the Yamato. Yamato is Yamato, no further explanation needed.

You don't have to keep every ship you get, you know. You can sell the ship and get the slot back. :)

Also, at various points they'll have missions you can run that will give you things like port slots as rewards, you can also get them out of crates. I've not bought a single port slot and currently have 76 ships and 19 free slots. Of course, many of those 76 ships are premiums, which comes with their own slots, but I still have 19 free ones that I got as mission and crate rewards.

Heck, there's a mission for two free port-slots running right now. You need a T4 to qualify for it, I believe, and a fair bit of time to grind to hit the various marks, but if you have both of those, and the patience....

She's what? I may actually have to play cruisers again.

So basically if you can deal with the slow movement the "Fuck you, I'm a dreadnought" theory of play is fun. Should be similar to Arizona. It's my currently most played and I take great pleasure in watching torps fail to hit me and unloading into unsuspecting DD's. If Tex plays similar I will have oodles of fun... once I get my gaming tower back form almost dying a firey death.

About half my premium ships were won in game from either missions or containers...and I know they have another Pastabote in the works because I saw Abruzzi in an OpForce during a match...

The US Cruiser line is currently the only CA line that I have reached T10 in...it will be...interesting...to see how the split will affect me...

Happy Veterans Day

Personally I like WoWS pre-year 2, when goodies could be earned and not bought, like the ARP ships. And April fools was actually something to talk about. A mere submarine in port? Really? I broke hiatus for that?

And then WG suddenly turned Big Business, requiring cash for almost everything. ARP ships that were earnable for a reasonable amount of play (you're getting a Premium ship for essentially free) turned into Haifuri ships that you flat out had to pay for.

And the icing on the cake: Mighty Mo. Yes, it's "free"... XP. 750k free xp. That's literally more than an entire line right there. Conversion alone is over $100. It is a slap in the face to those of us who want to earn our rewards. That utter horse shit is why I don't play WoWS anymore (Also the fact that I've reached Iowa and have a long grind to Monty but that is more important.)

Edit: oh, I also forgot the reason I almost didn't buy the Big E: fucking staggered realeases timed with an event. Specifically The Hunt for Bismarck event and the Hood release. WG released Hood at the start of the missions to earn Bismarck, but surprise! they only released the big $150 bundle. A week later, they released the $100 bundle, and a week after that the actual ship. A mere week after the Hood ship-only bundle released the event was over. The reason it matters is because Hood gave you a major advantage in completing the missions. Without it, earning Bismarck was almost impossible with a normal life and job/school. That's what started the rift for me. The rest was only fuel for the fire, and Mo was freakin' gasoline.

I WILL earm my Mo the hard way, I refuse to give WG the satisfaction, also my Iowa is good training wheels for it

Nope, Texas and New York have the same HP pool.

I stand corrected. :)

Pretty much! Arizona is pretty awesome, her guns may be a little more accurate than Texas, but Texas has much better AA. Looks wise, it's a toss up. Ari looks awesome with her red turret tops, but Texas is just covered in guns and looks menacing as hell. I prefer not to think as either ship as 'slow', more, 'inevitable'.

USN cruiser line split announced by WG. Cleveland's going to T8 and (likely) having her full potency restored.

Yup. Some interesting ships getting added in, supposedly before summer next year. I personally think closer to first quarter, they seem to be talking about it a lot now. I am very interested in seeing how Helena is going to slot in at Tier VII; same guns as Cleveland but with an extra turret a tier lower? It makes me suspect Cleveland will get Radar, or some other consumable, that gives her an edge.

I've only played one pastabote so far, Giulio Cesare, and she's pretty fun. Plays a lot like Kongo did in beta before the AA nerfs. Plus there is a Caeser Salad amidships with a bunch of knives sticking out of it, which is hilarious (I have a problem, I spend too much money on virtual botes, but hey... at least I don't smoke). I'm only up to New Orleans on the American line, and only have one Tier X ship in the game even though I've been playing since Beta. I just don't care much for the maps and gameplay meta at that tier.

Good for you! It can be done, it just takes a while and a lot of discipline. I got my Nelson that way.

I passed 1M FXP this week (admittedly through signal flag minmaxing and a significant amount of XP conversion from prem/Elite ships); just ~120k XP shy of being able to afford both Missouri and Nelson at the same time.

Go ahead and get Missouri now, then use her to get the rest of it. She has huge bonuses to her XP and Credit earning capabilities over a standard tech tree ship. It's basically impossible to loose money playing her, even when using premium consumables.

Currently (slowly) grinding through Colorado, about 40k from NorCar. Though, I may decide to unlock Mighty Mo sometime this month. *shrugs*

Quick question, do Archie and Albie teach anything to young and impressionable submarines?

You can get free slots from the crates. Hell, i got more slots then i know what to do with.

They probably teach them how misappropriation and thievery is more rewarding than lewding everyone in range. (And less dangerous when serving with Ari...)

Also....who wouldn't love a gun that fires 1/2 lb. bullets....

Unlikely that we ever will before the war is over.
It is far more likely that we will see another Duckie get summoned (assuming that all of them aren't already summoned).
