Japan had radar, it couldn't detect the USN DDs from background clutter at Matapan, since they were hugging the shore.

...Derp. One of the battles in the pacific was pretty decisive for the US DDs because their radar was better than the IJNs happened around a island.Interesting since Cape Matapan is in the Med. Battle of Cape Matapan

I actually think is was Kolombangara *checks* No not Kolombangara. Bugger all. Not Guadalcanal either of them it was later in the war, 44-ish.

As I said on SB, the Iowas have more than enough spare power in their engines to propel their screws even faster, the problem was cavitation.
For those who don't know, cavitation is basically the frothy bubbles you see coming off the stern of a ship, and it's from the seawater boiling. Water can boil at different temperatures depending on the pressure: high pressure raises the boiling temperature, low pressure lowers it. As a ship's propeller spins faster and faster, an area of low pressure forms on the propeller blades and the seawater starts to boil.
So what does this have to do with the Iowas' speed? At a certain point, their propellers would be spinning so fast that the bubbles they create start to displace the water needed to support the ship's stern. Basically the entire ship pulls a wheelie like a motorcycle: the entire stern sinks into the water, the speed plummets to about 20 knots, and everyone on board shouts, "Oh shit!"

In my mind I see Jersey pulling this in combat only for Shimakaze to completely lose her shit. Failing in her attempts to find this "Ludicrous Speed Mode" available to her boilers she takes her revenge on Jersey by getting sadistic.
Shimakaze sends Taffy 3 a copy of the complete works of Calvin and Hobbes with a note for them to get Jersey to play Calvinball with them.
Thus Zekamashi gets her pride back due to Jersey's exhaustion.
