Ascensions and Transgressions: the Tales of Keris Dulmeadokht (Exalted game)

Hmmm... Was Hanely's act of burning down her swamp and spending a few days despondent and ashen, to the point where she had to be fed by one of her Sziomkeruby, way back when an application of Lonely-City-in-the-Desert Rejection?

Well, technically Haneyl doesn't experience Torment.

However, in practice, when the Malfean Fire elements of her personality come to the fore, she basically winds up bipolar, with mood swings between mania and burned out depression based on how much "fuel" she has. She needs the Hunger and the Humanity to round off her personality and give her the capacity to feel things at less than 100% but more than 0%. So, yes, when she's in one of her downer moods with the Fire dominant, it pretty much resembles that aspect of Malfeas.

She presumably has similar imbalances, where the Hunger or the Humanity overwhelm her and leave her completely controlled by one facet of her.

(Three of Keris' souls have split natures - Haneyl, Calesco and Zanara. All of them experience - or manifest - things differently. Calesco represses and hides part of herself, forcing it down. Haneyl constantly tries to stay in the middle between her three natures, because she's the union of the three. And Zanara has two natures and two bodies and switches between them casually, leaving them personally happy but possibly the most mentally alien of Keris' souls - only competing with Echo)

From One, Many - Chapter 7
Oh, definitely. Honestly, I can imagine that torment lending itself just as easily to "Okay god I need to stop (and do something productive), why can't I stop!", as "party before the hangover metaphor" and very easily flowing straight form mad passion into oh-my-god-what-did-I-just-do Lonely-City-in-the-Desert Rejection. (I get the feeling that that last one is five days long for good reason.) To say nothing of the consequences afterwards.
As written, I think you pick one Torment and stick to it, though I suppose that a really emphatic shock could, if stunted appropriately, shift you into another from the same Yozi. As for the five day duration, that's because they should all be equally severe, and so the one that's least "wreck all my plans" (compared to, say, Cast-Down King Rage) is the longest, to make up for that lack of inconvenience. Attempts to game it by having one of your friends attack you to snap you out of it are liable to backfire, possibly by shunting you into Cast-Down King Rage instead of just snapping you out of it properly (whoops).

I will say that one of the concepts for Ecstatic Freedom Gavotte, for a pre-game conception of Keris and Sasi where they had a more BDSMy vibe to their relationship, involved Keris ignoring a safeword while in Torment and then never using EFG again, ever.

And now... well. This was technically a split session which we paused on Friday, intending to finish it on Sunday evening, but I got back from London a bit late and was tired and so we didn't do so. As a result, well...

♪ ♫ do you wanna see a torment~ ♪ ♫

You get this. From One, Many part 7.

dun dun duuuuunnn~

I'm not going to put extras up for this session, because quite a lot of them are a) good discussion that are b) spoilers for how we worked out this will resolve. So I will merely include this one from the very end.
Aleph: ... okay
Aleph: since we didn't manage to do anything today, do you want to call the session there and end on a hilariously cruel cliffhanger?
EarthScorpion: Yeah, sure.
Aleph: Bwaa haa~
Aleph: now to terrify everyone

O hai thar Titanic Heart Overweening. :3

Also, I love Dulmea's cry of "I can't be a demon lord!", just because I'm hearing it in that stereotypical "But I can't be pregnant" tone.

This is, in fact, the example that exemplifies just how nasty EFG is, because yeah, this is... yeah.

Yeesh.

poor keris

Her Station of Sacrifice really gave her a different perspective on everything. Amusingly, Keris the sort-of-ditzt combat wombat is a far better God-Queen than Nemone Sasimana.

I suggest going to that guy who's name is can't spell, Testosterone, he's strong enough that together the two of you should be fine

Wow is Sasi stressed out.

Still love how Keris is going worst case "I'll beat up one of the nerds" because she really doesnt need the support of Hell.

Sure she'll have to park her super boat but thats not vital, just really nice to have.

Also Echo XD. So cute and willing to poke fun at her mother.

(Is waiting for Ajordian to show up at the Thing)

Aww, Keris went a bit far there and scared Sasi a bit much. Yeah, painful cliffhanger.

Still, the fact that Echo got out, and the rests are going to...

tbh i just read it as normal-exalt-crazy instead of the-mad-perspective-of-the-titans crazy

like she isn't wrong
Ditto. I mean, it's a fairly crazy plan, but only in terms of implementation. Keris is absolutely RIGHT about what level she's on (for the moment).

I think Sasi's response is reasonable, here. Sure, Keris could probably take Ululaya in a straight up, one-on-one fight. But that will never happen. Ululaya will have her own Exalted, her army, her 2nd circles and any 3rd circles she's roped into joining her.

And this is presuming that someone more combat-capable like one of Izzy's doesn't come to try out this upstart claiming to be his equal.

And then every other Infernal gets put under a microscope because this is exactly the sort of thing that the Unquestionable were worried about.

Hype. So much hype. This is the next Christmas present, and the worst one, because in six days I will be cut off from the Internet fire two years.

Also, I'm glad I decided to reread Kerisgame, I finished just in time.

This is why you need to butter up Kalaska the Lawmaker more Keris. That way when Sasi goes "This is so illegal!" It will at least be illegal in your favor. :V

(Because obviously someone's need for control in the face of fear is something you can just butter up not to react accordingly when you run against her primal nature.)

tbh i just read it as normal-exalt-crazy instead of the-mad-perspective-of-the-titans crazy

Given the trigger conditions, and the fact that she just used the Malfean Excellency and failed to convince Sasi, and that Sasi has only just walked out on her, this looks more like the inciting incident to a period of Torment than the torment itself.

I expect it will take a moment for Keris to start really working herself into it.

Well, technically Haneyl doesn't experience Torment.

-snip-
Aha, gotcha. And now I have so many questions about whether and how being in Torment affects subsouls... but I suspect they need not be asked, as many shall be revealed rather soon.

You know I did not expect this!

I kind of had it in my head that obviously Keris would pick up 2nd circle Sorcery before THO, because otherwise she'd be able to summon her souls without...actually being able to summon them. But hey! Her souls all gonna become more powerful and junk and Echo's insight is probably correct. They'll attain new strength in accordance with their nature. So yes, actually, Haneyl will probably go on a devouring/infesting spree whilst for Echo it was effortless because that's who she is.

Also incipient Dulmea freakout which is going to be fantastic, and even better because she'll have to freak out even harder when she starts growing souls when the third charm in the series gets developed.

Is torment actually going to happen here? Infernal limit is pretty easy to bleed off, and even easier for Keris what with her having Coadjutor 5. Guess we'll see.

Aleph: since we didn't manage to do anything today, do you want to call the session there and end on a hilariously cruel cliffhanger?.

Rude and illegal. Atone for your sins.

Hi, a by-now long-time follower of this rpg session recordings / story here. I would like to stop just mostly lurking around here to post that even if it was cut a bit short, this was my favorite update so far. I had a grin on my face and chills running up my spine nearly the whole time, and even the cliffhanger didn't manage to foul my mood. Echo was awesomely annoyingly smart, Sasi's quiet panic was impactful, and I'm looking forward to (possibly) seeing the hinted epic meltdown in the next update.

Now, if you excuse me, I have to go and try to wrestle with my F5 compulsion. (No, hand. It doesn't make the update come any sooner, no matter how often you keep hitting that button.)

That "Straight fight would never happen" thing kinda applies both ways.

Because Keris would never fight Ululaya head on either. She'd sneak into her Moon-Palace-Body and super murder Ululaya without ever fighting her dudes.

Sasi freaking out is reasonable yes, because the Unquestionables would react very poorly to what Keris is saying. But that also doesn't change the fact that Keris is entirely correct in her assessments.

The real fun starts when someone stops to think about the implications of an Infernal's subsouls only being able to freely escape during Calibration.

New equals in power the Unquestionable can accept, if grudgingly, because they've had to do that every time a Yozi has spawned a new Third Circle or replaced a previous one. They have institutional knowledge (for lack of a better term) for dealing with that, however grudgingly they might apply it and however strained it might be from the sheer number of new 3CD-equivalents appearing at once. But new superiors? That's not something that's happened in a very, very long time. As in, "probably before Creation existed, and thus even longer before the majority of the present 3CDs existed". Even the still-living 3CDs who did have the experience of encountering other Primordials for the first time probably can't remember it well.

Currently Keris' souls are at the 2nd Circle level and can get out on the New Moon. It's when she gets to E10 and they start sprouting souls of their own that the Unquestionable realise that the GSP are mimicking the Yozi and not the 3rd Circles.
