Ascensions and Transgressions: the Tales of Keris Dulmeadokht (Exalted game)

He was one of Keris's old coworkers and teachers way back when. He later sold her and Gull (and Chen) out to Honest Mai.
IIRC it was also that Liho was also involved with Gull and was frankly not good for her. And then Liho didn't take Gull choosing Kit over nem all that well, and it was basically also a break up in the relational sense.

Kit's Facebook relationship status during the time she was studying occult as a mortal was "it's complicated" - and I wonder if the narrative she told elided that because she wanted it to be simple.

To Follow A Star - Chapter 11
To Follow A Star 11 has some really interesting rolls that really, really show off the value and second-layer metagame of the XS Advantage system, where you're often likely to succeed on your base goal but the trick of spending your extra successes is not to push your luck and risk them taking a hard bargain to just deny you everything (and also the beauty of how even when you get tonnes of threshold successes, there are never enough to get all the Advantages you want).

Rather than talk about the chapter in-depth, I'll just post some of the more significant rolls here:

Date tracking, Falling Earth 775
  • Moonday 15th: gets back to Nexus under the light of the full moon, has a bath, talks to Iroi, goes off to see the Harlotry, meets Paean.
  • Mercuryday 16th: plays the role of Laughing Cat in the Comedy of Helten.
  • Marsday 18th: talks to madam Ma Kuzi, gets shown around the Lady Blissful, learns Blue Order history, hears about Scarlett the Rose.
  • Saturnday 20th: obtains a meeting with Scarlett the Rose, real name Rose Kalizko, convinces her to come back to Saata with all her people after Venus sends favourable omens, checks in with Iroi & Fari and gets the story of their whole mess.
  • Early hours of Sunsday 21st: goes investigating around where the fight happened, meets Zanyira, spills everything to her.

Convincing Rose Kalizko to come back to Saata

EarthScorpion: OK, so. Stunt granted, and you've managed to twist her Discipline into supporting it, but she's opposed by a Minor Intimacy, so her Resolve is reduced to 3.
EarthScorpion: You've managed to frame it so she doesn't feel like she's losing her livelihood, but it's still a major inconvenience, so you need a repurpose of Persuade (which is 2 successes normally) to do this.
EarthScorpion: (This is assuming you want to make the roll at this point, which is effectively the last act of this Venture.)
Aleph: Okay. Okay. So. She's Resolve 3. I will use My Dark Lady for this so I only need 4 successes. I am rolling primary pool. I have a +1 from the fashionable equipment, and... does this count as leveraging her secret to reduce her Resolve by another 1?
EarthScorpion: Yes. You're exploiting it hard. Also you're not directly illuminated by sunlight so you have Double 9s.
Aleph: Sweet. Okay, so I'm effectively rolling at Diff 3 with 15 dice and double 9s.
Aleph: ... I should be comfortable with that, but... *side-eyes dice fairies*
EarthScorpion: You can use the Excellency in Step 1 and MDL in Step 4.
Aleph: ... fuck it, why not; with my luck this is where I get like 12 sux and you have to work out wtf I can spend 9 points of Advantage on. Oh, though, actually, I could probably spend some of them on things like "so who exactly are these 'True Blue Killers'" and "buying another Persuade against the risk of her finding out about the demon coin-hire thing" and "having some more things rescued from the old temples", so yes, I will also use my Excellency.
Aleph: 12+2 stunt+1 pretty clothes+4 Excellency = 19, with double 9s from MDL.
Dicebot: Calesco rolled 19d10s7c9c10 = 12 <5; 2; 8; 1; 10; 1; 3; 7; 8; 1; 6; 8; 8; 8; 2; 9; 7; 6; 8> #Beguiling Venus Ensnares Her Priestess
Aleph: lol, called it
EarthScorpion: OK, so this is the last roll of this Venture, and thus against Resolve 2, you have 10 Threshold successes. 1 of those has to go on purchasing another Persuade. That leaves you with 9 successes. You can spend these as regular on social things - things like learning intimacies, instilling intimacies, persuading her of other things, etc.
EarthScorpion: Other Advantages you can buy include:
  • She's not coming alone - she's moving everyone who works with her to Saata (5)
  • She'll handle the finances for the trip - effectively Secondary Resources for the purpose of getting there (3)
  • Books of Blue Order lore with spells in them (2 successes per spell)
  • Player declares one relevant fact that doesn't contradict what's already known as information the character learns, subject to Storyteller approval (4 successes, maximum two facts)
  • Events harmonise with Fate, smoothing over Calesco's impact in the world (1-5, more successes mean more harmonisation)
  • Introduction to the mercenary-exorcists (2 successes)
EarthScorpion: Anything else you want to propose?
Aleph: Oooo. Okay, hmm. I'm getting the books either way, this is just about whether they have spells in them, yes?
EarthScorpion: Yes.
Aleph: Okay, I don't seriously need more spells at the moment. Don't feel like Introducing a Fact. Iroi is handling the mercenary-exorcists. Hmm. So I can either have her bring everyone and fund the trip, or bring everyone and have events harmonise with Fate at the 3-dot level, or have her handle the finances for the trip and have events harmonise with Fate at the 5-dot level.
Aleph: Hmm. Okay, I choose:
  • Second purchase of Persuade to overcome the major inconvenience of moving across Creation (1)
  • Third purchase of Persuade to make her super 100% committed to this (1)
  • She's not coming alone - she's moving everyone who works with her to Saata (5)
  • Events harmonise with Fate, smoothing over Calesco's impact in the world (3, significant harmonisation with Fate)
Aleph: With the knowledge that if Rose is bringing all her people to Saata and not funding it herself, I am in the hole for A Lot Of Money because Keris only sent enough to get Malek Qaja and a moderate escort back with her, and I am therefore gambling that Calesco can get enough Resources (implicitly at least a Secondary Resources in liquid funds) from Liho's organisation to avoid going into debt.

Iroi & Fari's Big Adventure

EarthScorpion: OK, so Iroi's first obstacle is to research the mercenary exorcists, Diff 3.
Dicebot: Iroi rolled 9d10s7c10 = 5 <3; 3; 10; 2; 5; 10; 3; 4; 8> #Iroi research step 1
EarthScorpion: He succeeds at that, and gets 2 threshold successes. He discovers the Black Cat Band, how they could be contacted, and their price ranges -- this kind of stuff.
EarthScorpion: He spends those on asking the ST the question "Are they a reputable and reliable group", and gets the answer "No" - his research turns up that while they seem to be effective, they're also disreputable, and there are rumours that they hex people to extort them. He therefore moves to look into these rumours in more detail, to verify that they're not a danger to his lady - and because Fari is very offended to discover that they're maybe cheats and what they're doing isn't fair.
EarthScorpion: (he doesn't say anything to her about the fact that most of the keruby would consider such a con to be clever)
EarthScorpion: Unfortunately, this isn't his strong suite - this isn't an Iroi speciality, so he's down to 6 dice. Fortunately he has Fari as shouty muscle so she's assisting him - with a better dice pool too, because they're not being optimal about this.
Dicebot: Fari rolled 9d10s7c10 = 7 <5; 9; 10; 5; 8; 9; 8; 9; 2> #Fari Muscle
EarthScorpion: ... the little pest gets 7 successes, so Iroi gets +4 dice because OF COURSE SHE'S THE MUSCLE.
Dicebot: Iroi rolled 10d10s7c10 = 7 <3; 3; 10; 3; 10; 2; 9; 7; 2; 7> #Iroi backed up by Fari
EarthScorpion: Iroi passes, but only because of her help. Which, hmm. Yeah, turns out that they're extremely dodgy, shady, and while they're using what he recognises as Blue Order techniques he's seen Calesco using, they're actively making deals with spirits to both beat up their rivals and make trouble in return for worship. They are in fact an interesting elemental-focused branch with some very clever tricks there.
Aleph: ... oh dear. That means that they are in fact Bad People. Who have Things That Would Be Real Useful To Miss Cally.
EarthScorpion: Yes, so this is unfortunately the plan of these two. Clearly as they're proven they can't be trusted, they're a threat and a menace and that means it's OK to acquire their things in the name of Miss Cally. So they just need to - this is Iroi's case - demonstrate that they are breaking the Nexan laws against false tender for contracts, and they do that by entrapping them. So Iroi is talking to the local gods and spirits to set up what - the spirits think - is a chance to con the exorcists by getting them to pay more.
Aleph: oh no
Dicebot: Iroi rolled 11d10s7c10 = 2 <1; 3; 1; 2; 5; 5; 4; 9; 4; 4; 8> #fake god Iroi con
Aleph: ... and that was a terrible roll. Shit.
EarthScorpion: Yeah, unfortunately it turns out the gods were fully in on the exorcists' con, and promptly took him captive for fear that he'd sell out the good thing they had going on. Which means - tra la la - Fari is out to rescue him and punish the bad gods! And the bad exorcists! And she has Empowered by Prayer on her side, because it's heroic to rescue a poor distressed twink from mean exorcist thugs!
Dicebot: Fari rolled 12d10s7c8c9c10 = 13 <3; 9; 7; 4; 9; 7; 10; 2; 10; 7; 4; 8> #Fari Saving Iroi
Dicebot: Exorcists & Gods rolled 8d10s7c10 = 2 <6; 8; 2; 3; 8; 4; 2; 4> #Godly And Spirit-ly Self Defence
Aleph: ......
Aleph: WHY IS SHE LIKE THIS
EarthScorpion: Fari spends her 11 advantages on:
  • Tertiary Artefact (Divine Pen that Writes for her) (2)
  • Sash of the Canal Goddess (2)
  • Boots of the Street God (2)
  • Instil in her targets (Fear of Fari) (2)
  • The books of the elementalists, covering Nexan street knowledge of elementals, rituals, etc (3)
Aleph: *headdesk.gif*

The Secretive Zanyira, Gossip-Witch of the East

EarthScorpion: Zanyi is trying to Instil an intimacy of Trust Aunty Zanyi here :p
Aleph: Hmm. Calesco is Resolve 4, so I guess roll it. Zanyi's circumvented her Major Principle towards her family, so it's just her base Resolve.
Dicebot: Zanyira rolled 14d10s7c10+1 = 14 <9; 10; 6; 10; 2; 10; 1; 10; 6; 10; 4; 3; 8; 8> # Zanyi Doing Her Thing [ID: 252740]
Aleph: wtf hax bullshit gossip witchery op nerf plz
EarthScorpion: So, her basic thing was Instil a Minor Intimacy of "I Trust Aunty Zanyi". With the 10 extra successes, she wants:
  • Persuade x 2 (4) - Tell your aunty what you've been up to, and vent about how things have been going to a sympathetic ear
  • Read Intentions (1) - Calesco's goals for the scene
  • Read Intentions (3) - Learn a major intimacy of Calesco's
  • Persuade x 1 (2) - Tell Zanyi about how things are with Keris and what the problems she's having are/the backstory stuff, etc
Aleph: And yeah, Calesco's not even going to resist any of that. Good game auntie, well done.
Aleph: Heh. I do actually really like that line
"I do know what you're doing, you know," she adds. "Don't think you're tricking this much information out of me. I just don't mind telling you."
Aleph: Zanyi's prickly, proud little niece, who's perfectly willing to share information, but wants to be very clear that she's not some idiot being bamboozled into doing so, and that she's aware Zanyi is dodging her own counter-questions. She'll freely betray Hell, but she won't tolerate being thought less of or not given respect as she does.

Zanyira definitely has dirt on the Dice Gods, whereas Fari gets by because they're part of her fanclub. (She clubs people with her fanclub.)

I've really enjoyed the long term investigation that Calesco has done throughout this story.

Nexus is great and I love the humorous bits. Calesco's growth is wonderful, and this weird pilgrimage and 'piecing together a religious diaspora' thing is incredibly interesting and engaging, which is both surprising, great and deeply depressing because I have no idea where I'd even start looking for similar fiction.

To Follow A Star - Chapter 12
To Follow A Star 12 catches us back up to the current point in the timeline, meaning next chapter is Keris again! In the final week of Earth, Calesco takes on Liho of the Blue and the rumours she's heard of their wyld-worker priest-assassins, the True Blue Killers. I'm not going to lie, I really enjoyed this session, especially the part where Calesco and Liho were both throwing dice at each other and both succeeding on most of their rolls - it made it much more impactful and interesting than a drawn-out duel of evasion and defence, with (as Liho themselves calls out) an interesting ending where both of them got what they wanted at the cost of something they'd rather have not yielded.

<First meeting with Liho>
Dicebot: Liho rolled 10d10s7c10 = 7 <5; 1; 10; 5; 5; 7; 9; 1; 10; 7> #Liho notice-fu
EarthScorpion: OK, so they beat Calesco's Resolve. So they get her reaction to that "little kitten" nickname - and also want what Calesco wants from this scene with the bonus success. You can let them have this, or take a hard bargain
Aleph: Hmm. Okay, I'll let them have this - and in fact throw in as a freebie that she's going to think she managed to keep it off her face, because... sigh. Of course they notice when she thinks she hid it. That's literally exactly how games of Lie To Me always went with Keris. She mirrors her mother's tells.
Aleph: Her goals for the scene are to find a way to learn what they know of Venusian lore and rituals, to shift them to a more Compassionate path, and ideally to find a way to not have to fight them all. You can pick whether that last one includes the fact that she's at least reasonably sure she'd win.

<Asking about Bel>
Aleph: Rolling Read Intentions to get their reaction to that - both the name-dropping and the bald admission of who she is.
Dicebot: Calesco rolled 14d10s7c10 = 7 <2; 9; 6; 4; 1; 4; 2; 7; 10; 2; 5; 3; 10; 7> #Piercing Insight
EarthScorpion: Does that IC post answer what you wanted?
Aleph: Yup. And yes, heh. That wraps up Bel's theme nicely and gives the last bit of closure on Chen's gang.

<Pretending Keris is a Lunar, Liho calling it out as a lie made of truths>
Dicebot: Liho rolled 11d10s7c9c10 = 7 <9; 2; 5; 7; 10; 4; 4; 2; 4; 10; 6> #Lie To Me
EarthScorpion: Lol, you were baiting that, weren't you?
Aleph: A little~ : 3
Aleph: Hmm. Calesco is aiming that last barb ("you're no different from most there") at a Principle she thinks Liho has from what she knows of them from Keris's memories of Gull.
Dicebot: Liho rolled 11d10s7c10 = 10 <9; 3; 3; 4; 9; 10; 10; 6; 10; 5; 10> #Clear Sight
EarthScorpion: ... god. Yeah they aced that clear sight roll, and. Um. Given Calesco weakened her veils, maybe they didn't want to roll quite so well. 😛
Aleph: Hahahaha. Whoops.jpg
Aleph: Do I roll for that vicious barb, or is that rolled into whatever they get hit by from her light?
*Liho lashing out*
EarthScorpion: How's that as an answer? 😄
Aleph: : 3
Aleph: ... god, you know what one... well, not tragedy, but a sad thing, is?
Aleph: If Kit had gone to Liho when she found out Chen was abusing Gull, or if Liho had trusted her enough to let her in on the planned coup, Gull would probably still be alive.
Aleph: But Liho, IIRC, wasn't around when Kit found out - that's the whole reason why Gull was doing that work in the first place. And Liho never trusted Kit enough to let her in on things because they knew how hair-trigger and unreliable she was.
EarthScorpion: Yep. Kit's self centred nature meant she never really thought about how Liho loved Gull too. Because Liho was a rival and Kit was needy, hormonal, and wanted Gull both as a lover and a mother so wanted her all to herself.
Aleph: yup :(
Aleph: And more than that, she understood Liho just enough to see the simmering hatred in them, and projected herself on it. There was a time baby Keris hated everything like that, and it was when she loved nobody and was loved by nobody. So she assumed that what Liho and Gull had couldn't be 'real', or else... why would Liho still feel like that?
EarthScorpion: God what was the Kit/Liho hatesex like?
Aleph: hateful
EarthScorpion: Probably a harbinger of the Sasi-Keris-Testolagh stuff in that it only really happened when Gull was there as a buffer state. Or sometimes if they were both very drunk or high.
Aleph: Oh Keris, falling into these patterns again and again.
EarthScorpion: Keris: poly enough to try to get the girl she wants by sleeping with their current partner, not poly enough to actually like it and not get jealous.

<Negotiation>
EarthScorpion: Okay so you need a Persuade with two repurchases to get Liho to talk fully and truthfully
Aleph: Right. Hmm. On the one hand, if I use My Dark Lady, they'll probably know. On the other hand, the thing that Calesco is hammering on with her typical un-Kerisian straightforwardness is that she is, in fact, trying to make a genuine deal here.
Aleph: On the hair tendril, what's the point in having charms if you can't use them? My Dark Lady it is!
Aleph: Assuming they're Resolve 4, I need... 6 successes? And I have double 9s from MDL. Hmm. With 14 dice I shouldn't need the Excellency... but I think I'll use it just to be safe, because I want those Advantages here. So 18 dice, double 9s.
Dicebot: Calesco rolled 18d10s7c9c10 = 16 <8; 10; 1; 2; 3; 10; 7; 10; 7; 3; 7; 6; 9; 8; 1; 7; 9; 1> #Blue Liho, I've Come To Bargain
Aleph: haha, wtf
EarthScorpion: I see Venus smiles on you
Aleph: Very much so, god. I guess Liho really liked hearing that Calesco will and has in fact scourged Kit too.
EarthScorpion: 😄
Aleph: Hmm. Can I get their Major/Minor Virtue with the Advantages from that? As well as any relevant Principles they displayed.
EarthScorpion: Okay. So, the cost of repurchases are a base 1, but it's increased to 4 by a major intimacy opposing revealing it. The same +3 applied to resolve. So base resolve 7, then +4 X 2 takes you to 15.
EarthScorpion: So you have 1 threshold success. Which isn't enough to buy a virtue revelation. What you managed was actually a legendary social feat.
EarthScorpion: Anything you want to spend your 1 threshold on?
Aleph: Fucking yikes. Hmm. An Instill that Calesco isn't as naive as her obvious youth and ideals make her come off as? Or, hmm. Actually no. "Goals for the scene" is 1, right? I think their goals may have just shifted with that bit of opening up, so let's go with that.
EarthScorpion: There you go. And yeah, you literally wouldn't have managed it if you hadn't used My Dark Lady. And it hadn't been at night. That was a hell of a roll, with all your advantages, and you still barely managed it.
Aleph: fuck, yeah
EarthScorpion: The "increased cost to repurchase if they have intimacies against it" is really brutal. It makes it clear how bad it is.
Aleph: Yeah, you really want to get at least some Principles supporting you if there are Principles against.

<Not My Little Ones>
Aleph: ... lol. Okay so I know that Liho is technically offering conditional agreement here, but, uh
Aleph: ... hmm.
EarthScorpion: Hmm?
Aleph: Yeah, okay. Yeah. Liho was like "okay so you want to give us familiars" and my instinctive Calesco-brain response was no way in hell are you getting your hands on my sweet mezes so I rolled some quick pools and her Blue Priestess Principle won which I am taking to mean she remembered that she does in fact have demons other than mezes that she can let them call on (or at least only let them call on her mezes with very strict restrictions).
EarthScorpion: Ah yes, remembering that Haneyl is not the only family member who can make utility demons. I know it's hard Calesco, but ganbatte.
Calesco: *makes mezes anyway to be friends to the street rats*
Aleph: Lol. And, hmm. Yeah, you know what? I'm letting Liho observe that Principle of "My Little Ones (Protectiveness)" for free, because it actually genuinely does stick an interesting wrench in how they're viewing Calesco - one that very much distinguishes her from Claudia - that at least one of her breeds of demonic servant, the one she immediately jumps to thinking they want, is one she's fiercely protective of.
Aleph: They may even put together that she's travelling with a childish little flower girl who is probably a demon of an unknown breed.
Dicebot: Liho rolled 9d10s7c10 = 2 <9; 2; 6; 8; 6; 6; 1; 4; 4> #Liho Putting Things Together
EarthScorpion: Okay, so Liho didn't manage to make that conclusion, but has put together some things about "how demon lord, but also daughter of Kit".
Aleph: Liho is just internally like "who is this prickly demon child?", and has been mentally revising her age downward throughout this meeting.
Aleph: God, they're lucky they didn't meet her three years ago.
Aleph: ... for a number of reasons, actually.
EarthScorpion: And yeah, that is partly what helped put the timeline together because demon lords don't care about lesser demons, but this one is naive and childish :p
Aleph: Heh.
Aleph: ... huh. Shit.
Aleph: Thinking over this... Gull's talismans and a lot of the Sunset Street Witch stuff is powered by spirit pacts - a strong alliance with a disease god to make charms that soothe fevers and stifle pox, etc.
Aleph: The kind of thaum that they'll be able to draw from a Pact background with Calesco is... actually pretty formidable. Especially the elements of stealth, because I'm honestly not sure they have access to that kind of tech at the moment. A Pact with her is perfect for, eg, disguise talismans or ways to sneak through wards without setting them off.
Aleph: Like, part of that is the fact that she's E6, which is a pretty strong weight class compared to the spirits you find in Nexus. But also her themes.
EarthScorpion: I mean, yeah. That's why Liho is going "oh no please don't try to corrupt us by giving us what we want, miss demon lord, that'd serve your goals perfectly and we'd find it so hard to say no".

<Calesco quoting the Scripture of the Whore>
Aleph: Oh, the Scripture of the Whore, and the Constellation of the Lovers.
Aleph: Sidereal Socialise, even. Very appropriate : P
Aleph: This deal manages the impressive feat of being unbalanced in both directions at once
EarthScorpion: Cute, but now you have to do damage control
Aleph: Fuck. >_<
Aleph: Hmm. Okay, showing your belly to Liho is not a winning strategy to make them sympathise with you, and an apology alone won't be enough. A physical gift would sate Haneyl, but Liho isn't quite like her.
Aleph: ... let's try information. Which I can also offer without rubbing in that I saw their hurt by justifying it as something else.
EarthScorpion: Ha ha, good catch that Liho will push and push if you show weakness. You didn't make the people-pleaser's mistake.
Aleph: "It's not an apology for insulting you, it's just because you gave me an answer about Bel."
Aleph: Now let's see what they go for.

<Liho offering Maldou Hanxia up on a platter>
Aleph: Calesco: IKnowYou'rePlayingMe.png
Aleph: Calesco: ...ButYou'reRight.gif
EarthScorpion: OK, so, these are the following obstacles for the Heist
  • Iroi - setting up the strategic plan and getting the right people for the job (advantages obviously likely to be spent on generating Merits you can use later)
  • Calesco - making contact with the target's organisation to set up the con
  • Calesco - Carrying out the con to walk off with the cash.
Aleph: So, roll me Calesco's Blue Priestess for her assistance for Iroi for what help he can get from the organisation.
Dicebot: Calesco rolled 9d10s7c10 = 5 <3; 5; 7; 4; 8; 10; 4; 4; 9> #Calesco Helping Iroi So He Can Help Her
EarthScorpion: Two-dice bonus for him, then.
Dicebot: Iroi rolled 13d10s7c10 = 9 <7; 6; 6; 5; 3; 5; 9; 9; 7; 7; 4; 10; 10> #Iroi planning
EarthScorpion: OK, vs Diff 5 planning, he comes out with 4 threshold and so is spending it on getting Secondary Followers. As a Secondary merit, this counts as +3 to rolls. It can also be committed for successes (and used to buy off consequences).
Aleph: nice
EarthScorpion: Now, contested roll. She's rolling Dark Lady of Veils, helped by her Followers and any charms she might use. He's rolling Fortitude + Embassy + his Primary Backing in the Guild (4) + his equipment bonus from his soothsayers (2) = 17.
Aleph: 12 dice + 2 stunt + 4 Kerisian Excellence + 3 Followers = 21. Using My Dark Lady to make it double-9s and Such Sweet Corruption to get him to overlook any inconsistencies.
EarthScorpion: Okay, roll me Such Sweet Corruption first - if successful, that'll remove his bonus from the soothsayers as he breaks the rules by not running this deal by them properly because it seems so good and the proper procedure is such a pain.
Dicebot: Calesco rolled 21d10s7c9c10 = 15 <6; 9; 7; 1; 1; 1; 9; 7; 1; 10; 6; 2; 6; 9; 7; 8; 8; 2; 6; 9; 1> #A Deal Too Good To Be True (It Is)
Dicebot: Maldou Hanxia rolled 15d10s7c10 = 9 <9; 10; 8; 6; 7; 9; 7; 4; 3; 9; 4; 4; 7; 5; 4> #Maldou Hanxia due diligence
EarthScorpion: Advantages - 6 to spend:
  • Basic Tertiary Resources until you leave Nexus
  • Repurchasing to increase level of Resources (2 per purchase, up to 2)
  • Covering tracks (1 per increased difficulty)
  • Loss of Status for him (3, reduces Primary Backing to Secondary for rest of story)
  • Reduced Fate Impact (1-3, more spend = reduced impact on fate/possibly aiding fate)
  • Lingering loyalty in assets (1-2)
Aleph: Aaargh.
EarthScorpion: It's kind of funny how the rolls you barely pass or outright fail cause you less psychic damage than the ones you succeed at without quite enough Advantages to get everything you want.
Aleph: Fuck you. Okay, hmm. I can either get SO MUCH MONEY and hide my tracks/reduce fate impact a fair bit but not hurt his status, or get ENOUGH MONEY and fuck him over and either disguise my tracks or reduce my fate impact a bit. So it comes down to how much I want money and how badly I want to fuck over a slaver.
Aleph: ... put like that, my choice of Advantages is...
  • Repurchasing to increase level of Resources (2 points, Secondary Resources gained)
  • Loss of Status for him (3 points, reduces Primary Backing to Secondary for rest of story)
  • Reduced Fate Impact (1 point, reduced impact on fate)

Well Calesco is going to be dropping a whole heap of problems right on top of Keris's head. Some of those problems are also solutions, some are secret when she'd rather know, and many are not secret when Keris would rather they were.

Calesco gets a hint as to the path she's on, becoming a Third Circle Deva. Don't think anyone but maybe Echo even suspects this is possible yet, but Echo is being atypically cautious with that secret. (Not actually sure she does know this, or her secrets are just about her bestie ascending to Third Circle)

Malek Qaja is ridiculous and overdramatic, and I love it. Gods it's going to be ridiculous when she appears in An Teng.

There's a Discrete/Discreet mixup near the end of the chapter. (I only notice because this is one I am cursed to see given how ubiquitous the confusion is)

On the Titanic Soul Invincible path, I'm wondering about how far we are off from that. Fairly sure Keris needs to hit Enlightenment 10 before purchasing TSI, so I'm trying to guess when that'll happen. The cheap answer is obviously 'whenever Aleph decides to save XP and buy it, it's a mechanically tracked game', which yes, sure, technically. But E9 happened after a big plot resolution and then the Five Days Dreaming sequence, so I think it's safe to assume Aleph is planning ahead and thinking of when to arrange it thematically and dramatically for the best story. Don't think E10 is something Keris is going to hit randomly like 'have enough xp, lol E10 now'.

There's what, two E10 Infernals around for certain? That overpowering Realm-type that's head of a directorate and Sasi, I think?

The kids having to deal with spawning their own souls and suffering the chaos that they themselves inflicted upon Keris would be funny, albeit not as much as I think true 2CD are generally...simpler in scope.

This is probably extremely premature speculation in any case, and it'll be years before it becomes relevant.

Calesco's really learning to temper her light isn't she? It's a sign of growing up, though unfortunately for her growing up means becoming a 3rd Circle, which horrifies her.

I think that the actual Titan Soul Invincible part (and Enlightenment 10) will involve Keris' relationship with Dulmea, and the damage that the conflict between Dulmea's fear of the Unquestionable and Keris' willingness to circumvent hell has done. I think that they're still at Unwoven Coadjutor 4 because of it.

I'm really looking forward to Calesco, perhaps Keris' stealthiest soul, having to deal with Malek Qaja's level of extravagance. One of her most memorable traits was her ability to lounge anywhere in a way that made Keris jealous.

(Eko-centric Sidestory) The Jackal and the Joyful Wind
Have a Kerisgame extra! In this short, punchy oneshot, we see the payoff for Lilunu's Clever Plan at the end of Earth and get a glimpse of what her daughteru is going to be spending her Wood (and possibly also her Fire) doing. Behold: The Jackal and the Joyful Wind!

Very happy to see Ney again! They're great, and I want them to play a bigger part in the story (which is what it looks like we're actually setting up for).

Also, this:
His day proceeds from there, through the familiar routine of his early morning workout - while giving helpful advice to his Blades to encourage them to improve by annoying them so much they get better out of frustration
is such a Ney way of doing Tiger Warrior Training Technique, I love it

Five Calibrations Pass - Wood 775 (Zen Daiwye)
As with Earth, Wood 775 has been a whopper of a chapter, so we're splitting it into two. The first part of which is a lot of reunions as Keris gets back from Hell! Beware, though - this isn't just harmless fluff, and Keris has several hard conversations that need having.

Kali is delightful and makes me really want kids even more than I already do. Hanily is delightful and makes me afraid of having kids. Ogin is just vibing and I feel you, you little autistic dude, right on.

Evil Bureaucrat Hanily would be utterly terrifying. Assuming she didn't end up burning down the school before her training was complete.

@Aleph

The other day, I was going over some old posts and I saw some about there being plans for Keris to create some sapient hellstriders(including one that's a giant wasp and also a tsundere).

Are those still going to be a thing or did they get (narratively) subsumed by some of Keris's other kids?

Five Calibrations Pass - Wood 775 (Saata)
And from Zen Daiwye, down to Saata. Wood 775 continues with Keris's time in the big city, seeing to the work that's built up while she's been gone, checking on the status of one of her more valuable assets... and facing an unexpected threat from an unexpected corner.

Poor Atiya indeed.
But I will admit, I am so terribly curious where this will go next.

Five Calibrations Pass - Late Wood 775
Late Wood 775 sets out from Saata up north towards Seiarore, as Keris deploys her plan to a) sneak a Kimberyian trade route up the western wyldshore that the Western Directorate don't know about in case Kasteen gets put in charge of it, b) give Tenné Cinnamon some more backstory in case any Sidereals hear from Hell about this new dark-skinned redhaired Director with silver feathers in her hair who's in charge of the Southwest and start side(real)-eying at the totally unrelated dark-skinned redhead with silver feathers in her hair who owns a nightclub in Saata, c) do some sorcery teaching to three of her occult apprentices and d) get away from Saata so she doesn't have a mental breakdown and murder someone the social contract says she's not allowed to.

Since it's Keris, she promptly runs into more emotional complications, but in a stunning twist, this time they might actually be semi-healthy! I know that's hard to believe, but statistically speaking it's gotta happen eventually, right?

Guys?

Right?
