An Unknown Future

Oi

That said, the main thing against cats is that they're solitary carnivores, which makes it hard to make a society out of the likely traits(also Spirit Quest currently has a civilization made almost entirely out of swole catgirls anyways) we can get out of it.
Catgirls negate all your arguments!!!... :p
Besides i changed to fox girls anyways (Because noone else is voting for catgirls :( )

Locking vote then. Winning votes are:

[Beastfolk] Fox

[Action] Scout
[Action] Craft Tools

It seems that the power of fluffy tails has beaten out the water dwarves. Truly, the might of the fluffy tail is fearsome.

Anyways, update has a good chance of being later today due to weekday, but we'll see. I might get inspired and get it out earlier.

Now then.

*Rolls dice to see what happens.*
...
... Okay ...

Do we have fox girls (and boys) kind of Beastfolk or do they look more like Human sized bipedel foxes?
I'd probably call it a bit closer to fox girls (and boys) myself, though you're not exactly people with fox ears and tails stapled on.

You have humanoid body proportions and skeleton structure, averaging about 4 feet (about 1.2 meters) tall. You don't have hair, though, instead being fully covered in fur and while you don't have a truly dominant snout, you do have a bit of one.

I should probably note that this may change in the future, so don't assume that it will always be true.

Awww, i was hoping we could at least vote on how different our beastkind are :(
ohwell.

Set In Stone

Klink

Klink

Hmm... That should really be making more of a 'Knock' sound.

Klunk

Better, but the stone still wasn't making any sense, much like the other stones. Maybe if she aimed to make a 'Klink' it would make a 'Knock' instead?

Plink

Well, that's a new one.

Stonetail growled as she looked over the stone. It was another one that refused to make sense, but why? What was she missing here? She tossed it into a new pile, determined to come back to it when she found more like it so she could look it over properly.

The next stone she picked up had a streak of, something reminiscent of distant memories as a kit of the ocean at sun set, alongside another band that resembled the sun itself, all surrounded by a stone that reflected the night sky they had been finding everywhere, complete with little stars. A sea sun stone then, she mused. The sort of stone that made her quite sure that stones had a deep connection to the sky, though the elders simply rolled their eyes when she suggested it.

It was also the sort of stone that she had long since learned could not be fashioned into even a passable tool, likely brought in by a pup new to hunting that thought it pretty.

Picking up a knocking stone, Stonetail wondered if she aimed it just so, could she combine the sunset with the sun? What would happen if she did? All of the stones that would make for decent tools were snatched by others as soon as they came in anyways, so no one could really complain if this was what she spent her time on.

The sense of frustration from a lack of proper stone was a common theme throughout the makeshift camp. Very little stone found was of a singular type. That which was, was often of a sort that wouldn't break cleanly, instead fracturing into strange shapes and sizes that made even the most experienced of stone workers try pulling their tail out in frustration more than once.

In response to this, many of the hunters had taken to going farther and farther when out. They searched the land for appropriate stones, often bringing back samples for the vixens to test and see if they could do something with. These rocks usually didn't form proper tools for one reason or another, but every now and then there were a few stones that did. None of those stones were so kind as to be in singular large deposits, and most were used up quickly upon being discovered. So the hunters continued their search, joined more and more by pups and those growing frustrated with a lack of progress in trying to shape useless stones.

Searches along the hills were not met with much success. Much of the area was covered with trees and bushes that not only made travel difficult and easy to get lost in, but covered the ground, making stone incredibly hard to find in the first place.

Along the beach was much easier, the wide and often flat sands allowed them to travel long distances at ease. Long distances that ended in cliffs of more of the damnable rock they could not shape in less than a day's walk as they headed away from the mist and was met with the mouth of the Great River in the other direction, of which they did not have the rafts to spare to cross often enough to thoroughly explore.

It was along the Great River where the most success was met. As one headed along the river away from the ocean the hills became more pronounced, the trees thinner, and often there was an entire hill seemingly broken in half, exposing a massive amount of rock. For the most part these rocks were also of the wrong type, but as the hills became higher, eventually the rocks transitioned into another type.

This type was the sort they could use for making tools.

Once they discovered this, the family gathered up a set of stone tools and was about to start debating whether to build rafts to bring the stone in or to just move their camp closer to the site when one day the stone tools, along with roughly half a dozen foxes just disappeared when no one was looking.

Panic immediately took hold over everyone and searches were extended farther and into areas that the family had not previously ventured to. Rumors began to fly rampantly and it was quickly getting hard to discern what was a theory and what was speculation. Some insisted that they had seen a wolf stray too close to the camp several days beforehand, while others claimed that the land was cursed, and one person told of how they disappeared in a flash of light during the night as a comet shot overhead.

The warm winds were nearly half over and foxes starting to give up before they were found. Far upriver, well beyond where the good stone was, a hunter who had still been searching in desperation for his childhood love had persisted. There he found a much more permanent camp than the family had yet, filled with very familiar tails.

The foxes, it turned out, had been gathered and led away by Stonetail who claimed to have seen this location, where stone touched the sky, in the various shards and flakes made in the process of making stone tools. Knowing that the elders and most of the family would simply try to stop her, she secretly gathered those that would follow and left one night, taking the tools with them to help set up the camp.

Here she guided the foxes by studying the remains of stones as they made various tools from them, using them to seek guidance and predict the future.

How should the family handle Stonetail and her renegade group?

[][Stonetail] Ignore them and go back to making more stone tools to replace the ones lost.
[][Stonetail] Demand that they return the tools they took.
[][Stonetail] Force them to cease this foolishness and return to the family.
[][Stonetail] Take the tools back during the night, when they aren't looking.
[][Stonetail] Throw yourself on their mercy and ask for their guidance.

Hint: Miscreants are characters that rarely (hopefully) appear and cause problems for your society.

Personally I'm leaning between these two, the others are too likely to back fire or will hurt us severely in the long run.
Oh, also, OP how common are beastfolk in this world? We're probably a minority but in general how common are we? Seen once in a lifetime or less rare, or fairly uncommon?

You don't exactly have a large data set to go off of.

The area where you came from before you arrived here seemed to have a few. That said, most tended to stick to themselves and the humans often made a point of avoiding you so again, rather limited data set.

I doubt we should ignore them, if only so they don't ignore us. But I can barely see the renegade tribe asking for our help in the future.

I think "Demand" is the best choice. We regain lost tools, the renegades potential response feels like a dice roll. On the other hand we might lose out on 'magic', but if that means we don't gain a leader who chooses to run away from conflict. I'm unsure losing 'magic' is a loss.

Yes. Shes our precious fox girl and she needs our support!
...
...
That and it seems she has found something.
She doesn't need our support. She doesn't want our support.

Stonetail left, instead of try to make the whole group listen, or (as far as I can tell) try talking to the elders. She stole our tools, to make better tools her way? Hmmmmm, maybe I'm misreading, if our tools suck maybe making more for a possible upgrade so we don't fall behind is what we should do.

I'm now conflicted between 'Demand' and 'Ignore'.

Right, that's been two hours, so I'll unlock the vote now.

I don't quite have a hundred words worth of stuff to say this time, so I don't know quite what I'll type so people get an alert from the author that something has been posted. I suppose I'll just type several words pondering things instead.

How are people liking the moratorium? While I like it and think it's good for discussing things in general, we seem to not be having much discussion about it and I'm honestly wondering if it's needed with this few people. I'm kind of worried that many people might be looking at the update, going 'neat', and then not coming back.

Thoughts? Should we keep it? Put it to the side for now? Is it really having any effect on the game?

Vote has been unlocked.

Dark blue, yellow and starry black. An agate?
No, that looks like a hematite deposit

Agate it is. Thats metamorphic sedimentary rock. Good for iron ore later, but maddening in the stone age.

Might be flint somewhere.

[][Stonetail] Ignore them and go back to making more stone tools to replace the ones lost.

Perseverance/Apathy. If they are gone, so be it.
Produces a neutral splinter group. Costs us in resources and manpower
This leads towards a social stability value much like Humility, but the tradeoff is that it says its okay to steal and ignore authority(i.e. makes trouble rolls worse)

[][Stonetail] Demand that they return the tools they took.

Justice. What is taken must be returned.
Produces an unfriendly splinter group. Costs us in manpower

[][Stonetail] Force them to cease this foolishness and return to the family.

Order. Unity is all.
Lose nothing, maintain stability. Risk of producing a hostile splinter group.
This leads towards a social stability value, which cuts down on banditry and rebellions later for enforcing conformity. Dings innovation a bit though.

[][Stonetail] Take the tools back during the night, when they aren't looking.

...uh, well we value the tools more than the people. We approve of underhanded means
Produces an unfriendly splinter group. Costs us in manpower and risks stability.

[][Stonetail] Throw yourself on their mercy and ask for their guidance.

Reinforcement of Finding A Better Way.
If someone has a good idea you should follow them.
Lose stability, gain innovations.
We'd want some social stability values if we go this route though.

[X][Stonetail] Throw yourself on their mercy and ask for their guidance.
[X][Stonetail] Force them to cease this foolishness and return to the family.

Either of these for me. We don't want to start splintering when we have a population of half a village!

What stability? This isn't PoC. The stability mechanic might not exist or be invisible for some reason.

edit: moratorium good.

[X][Stonetail] Demand that they return the tools they took.

Just found this, I'm always happy to see more Civ Quests, especially if they have somewhat fantasy like elements.

[X][Stonetail] Demand that they return the tools they took.

Stonetail and those who followed her forsook the family and took off onto their own path, which is fine by me. The part that isn't fine is that Stonetail stole from the family when she left, which in turn put those who remained into jeopardy.

Right now she left with people and tools, but what if someone would then leave with food, or with children? It has to be known that circumventing the will of the Elders, and thus that of the family, is not acceptable.

I think this is wrong, they could be friendly. We have a trait 'playful fox' that allows us a diplo bonus. Jumping to the conclusion that demanding tools they no longer need is a guaranteed negative outcome, feels wrong.

Speaking in terms of social stsbility. Not a stat. By legitimizing disobedience and independence there will be problems down the line

Its sets the tone of the relationship as "You Have Done Wrong". Less friendly than neutral. Not hostile

Miscreants? Bah. More like savants and scholars! They are to be encouraged in their work!

I have a really hard time with this vote as I do not like any option.
Miscreants aren't meant to give good choices, so it's good to know that mechanic is working as intended. Sometimes they can provide an opportunity (depending on your viewpoint), sometimes they are just a resource sink, other times they are the start of trouble brewing.

A lot of how people perceive them will likely have to do with how much they like their current society, because their general purpose is to somewhat randomly appear and shake things up.

Anyway, vote looks close (and once again not many people). It will be open for a few hours yet, liking the discussion on the possible pros and cons of this choice, though I feel obligated to keep how on the ball people are to myself, I will say that there is something people are missing here.

Could we develop our social structure/traits such that miscreants give good options, being encouraged?
