Aes Sedai Quest [Wheel of Time]

A Nighttime Adventure, 1
You have been in the White Tower for two months when you are woken up in the middle of the night by a knock.

It is rather funny, how you know that it is the middle of the night despite the darkness of your windowless room. Your body has learned to tell, now; you no longer need to be woken up by the other girls in the morning, you just snap awake shortly before dawn on your own.

But now, it is a long while yet until dawn, so you rub the sleep out of your eyes and sit up. "Who is it?" you call softly.

"It's me," Rielin hisses through the door. "Come on, hurry and get up before I'm caught by the curfew watch!"

A small part of you just wants to go back to sleep, but your curiosity wins out, and you light your candle with a small, and very forbidden flow of fire. Fire, you have found, comes easily to you when you channel. Not so readily as Air will - Air feels like an extension of yourself - but nearly. Water is a struggle, however, and you seem unable to do much of anything with Earth except move little piles of dirt around. Alanna Sedai said that was perfectly normal, that most women are stronger in some elements and weaker in others.

You hurry to get dressed, blow out your candle, then open the door to find an impatient Rielin waiting outside. "Come on!" she whispers, taking you by the wrist and tugging gently.

Long story short I finished my Summer semester, all my free time went straight to vidya, and then the Fall semester started. So since my update speed is so irregular, highly dependent on my mood and inclination to write and such, let me add a disclaimer: even if this thread hasn't been touched for five years (extreme example... I hope...), I will still come back to it at some point.

It lives, woo!

[X] Ask questions first
-[X] "Where do we be going?"
-[X] "Why do I be awake at this Light-forsaken hour?"
--[X] Preferably do all of this in one glorious, semi-intelligible slur of half-conscious Illianer gibberish.

Ask EVERY question.

No questions. Talking only makes noise and increases the chance of getting caught. Trust that Rielin will have a good explanation when we get wherever we're going.

Why not combine them?

If you're going to go with her no matter what, what is the point of asking questions first? All you're going to do is increase the likelihood of getting caught by the curfew watch. The only reason for questions now rather than letting her explain later is if you think we might decide not to go with her.

Because my vote for asking is more for the comedic adorableness than actual curiosity? I mean, penances aren't that severe unless the sitting Amyrlin or Mistress of Novices is a literal sadist -- something like being out-of-doors at night would most likely result in extra chores more than anything.

The problem with intentionally making enough noise that both of us get caught is we miss out on what Rielin took the trouble to show us. And also dump her into trouble.

Which means in the future they'd just leave us out of things.

Oh, not intentionally, I'm just less concerned with being caught than others. I care less, and don't think Rielin will burn us entirely if we get caught once.

Apart from matters of practicality, I feel like Lucia's personality as established by other decisions in the quest is to be willing to wait for answers rather than demanding them. Curious and inquisitive, yes, but rarely impatient. I honestly do picture her arching an eyebrow at Rielin and being all, "Yeah, let's see where this going," to herself.

A Nighttime Adventure, 2
What in the Light could Rielin possibly want at this hour?

"Where do we be-" you start to slur, but she just reaches out with her long, long arm and covers your mouth with her hand.

"Sssch," she hisses, pulling you out of the novice quarters as her furtive eyes dart around, searching for patrolling Aes Sedai or snooping servants. "Not here, just come with me."

And so you let her lead you into the Tower and then up, staircase after staircase after staircase going up until your legs are begging you for mercy and breathing is a chore from the exertion. You realize where you are going soon enough; that balcony that Rielin showed you on your very first day. She did say that the view is beautiful at night, too - and you asked her to show you, sometime.

The two of you exit onto the balcony and you gasp in amazement. As beautiful as the view was during the day, at night it's surreal. The grand city of Tar Valon is a mass of shining light spreading out beneath your feet, framed by the band of shimmering silver of the River Erinin. The true wonder comes as you look up at the sky - there is no moon tonight, allowing the endless band of stars streaking out across the heavens to glitter bright and sharp, little pinpricks of light. When you were a child, you were told by your wetnurse that stars were holes in the sky allowing the brilliance of the Creator to shine through. Now you know better, that the stars are Spirit made manifest, just like this world consists of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

"Amazing," you breathe, lowering your eyes back down to the horizon. In the corner of your eye, you can see Rielin slanting a glance at you, a little smile curling her lips.

"It is," she agrees.

We might be driving the QM insane with all of the Illianer stuff.

...nope, too adorable, can't stop.

Hey @Choo Choo, where are we relative to the books? I recognize some names, but how many years out are we? Or are we in fact no years out, and poor Rand is starting the death spiral towards insanity and paranoia as we speak?

It's currently 988 NE; the first book starts in 998 NE.

Of course, things are not going according to canon; for those of you who have forgotten, Gitara Sedai is still alive, and Tamra Ospenya is still the Amyrlin Seat... and there are other discrepancies that have yet to come up in the quest.
