...Except they didn't seem to be trying to make her a wallflower? They seem to have taught Lorelei everything she needed to know to be an effective Inspired, they just prevented her from completing projects. Either that or she picked up an enormous amount of stuff by observation and osmosis.

i take that from this (as it is one of our start traits) :

[] Stubborn

Your parents have tried very, very hard to turn you into a docile wallflower. Sheer spite has caused their attempts to backfire rather magnificently, to the point where your stubbornness seems to be reflected in your gift. Honestly, you're not sure why your parents thought you'd just sit back and let them arrange a marriage for you. Since when were you willing to sit back and accept something you'll hate?

Even if Surges aren't entirely understood, your own seem to understand you won't accept anything but the best. Your average project takes vastly more time and materials to complete, but they're also much more advanced than what you'd normally be able to make. You think they might be much more durable, too. Using your skull to break down the wall of failure may be a bit painful at times, true, yet you wouldn't have it any other way. Now, if your meddling parents remove their customized poles and let you actually finish something? Maybe you wouldn't be plotting to run away from home.

Thanks to all the explosions, your creation process tends to be even louder than usual. You've sometimes wondered if your gift is trying to get revenge on you for refusing to give up in the face of overwhelming challenges.

Their actions can be very easly be seen as ether being incompetent at being parents, malice or them haveing some really stupid ideas (them being Inspired makes that very likely ...).

I also don´t think her parents have an even compareable knowleage of the light even before she ran away. That it does talk to us and that we haven´t heard of it before should have clued us into that.

It is vastly more likely that our parents are nobles more then they are Inspired.
Being a noble wife she would have needed the knowleage of what was going on in the world, so it makes sense that her parent would teach her that/tell her.

Overall i honestly think that her parents didn´t care at all what she wanted and tried their best to force her into a form that would give them the best advange when they marry her off.
They could have seen her strong Inspiration as lowering her "value" as she would have been more likely to ether get herself / her husband killed and would have been more likely to ruin the area she was in with one of her experiments or othertings like that. From what we know a being a strong Inspired is not good at all for the sanity of said person and as such could have been unwanted as a wife*.

*more or less the risk she brings are so high that the good points are simply not worth it.

One thing should be very possible and downright easy to make even without a surge right away, and could help us out a lot: A gun-shaped casing for one of Gift's detachable batteries, with two modes, one that functions like a melee range weapon and one that functions like a wielding torch.
So, basically a lightsaber?

... it clearly said that Inspiration was giveing us more insane projects not more sane ones.

But the point is, unlike other Inspired, it took less and less prompting for our Inspiration to actually talk to us.

If our parents were merely neglectful or dismissive of us, for what reason would they take the trouble to interrupt every single one of our projects so assiduously? If they didn't care, wouldn't it be easier to just leave us alone instead of interfering every single time?

You do see that "unreliable narrator" tag above the thread, right? What Lorelei percieves and what is actually going on aren't necessarily the same thing.

I don't think our parents have a deep understanding of The Light. What I do think they are is perceptive enough to realize that our creations are better than is normal for people our age. Depending on the nature of our earliest Surges, they could have realized Lorelei was talented enough that few, if any, of the Inspired in the kingdom are on her level. Certainly, that she was beyond their level.

That kind of power is dangerous for more reasons than just the obvious risks to her safety. Think about it. If the King is the strongest Inspired in her kingdom, what does it imply that Lorelei is the King's equal in strength? Even if our Inspiration has gotten stronger over time (which I'm not entirely convinced of), we still may have had an unusually strong link to it from the start.

Hell, it might be simpler than that. If noble rank is based on strength of Inspiration, even partially, Lorelei's strength might have elevated her family to a higher level of nobility...which other nobles may wish to prevent. Mostly by killing Lorelei.

Now, I'll admit, they could have communicated that to us more clearly. They may simply have thought Lorelei was smart enough to figure it out, or that her lessons would cause her to realize what was happening. From another angle, they may simply have felt that, if she couldn't figure it out, she was better off not knowing.

I don't think our parents are dumb, either. If they've been confiscating our creations this entire time, they must have been aware of the changes to our creations and projects over time. They should know that, if they're trying to make Lorelei weaker, or to change her temperament, that they're failing miserably. Since that's the case, I would have expected them to change course at some point, and bow to the inevitable. Especially if our mom is a fairly strong Inspired. They didn't. That tells me they have some other reason for doing it.
If our parents were trying to protect us, they critically failed to convey that to us. Admittedly, this only makes it more plausible...
At first, it would probably be due to her age, and they're lack of confidence in her ability to keep a secret. After a while, though, it would probably just be too hard for them to admit it to her. Especially since she's stubborn, and may continue trying to make things anyway. And what they don't say, no one can overhear via spyclock.
But the point is, unlike other Inspired, it took less and less prompting for our Inspiration to actually talk to us.

I can't imagine an incredibly weak Inspiration is actually much of a selling point amongst the nobility, either, if they're mostly Inspired. If anything, I'd usually expect strength to be a selling point, especially in a girl, since they apparently don't tend to be as strongly Inspired. At a certain point, though, it might become more dangerous than beneficial, since it's still the nobility, and backstabbing is a thing. Killing a threatening heir to a rival before they're grown is probably pretty common.

I would like to point out that our parents never once let us complete a project for them to confiscate.

It's not your fault you've left so many of your projects half-finished, not when you've always been interrupted prematurely. Slapping you upside the head, stealing your materials, waving enticingly shiny objects in front of your face, locking you in your room again

They also actually put in special effort to ensure we would never complete a project, to the point of making specialised poles to interrupt our Surges.

Now, if your meddling parents remove their customized poles and let you actually finish something?

That said, they did seem to educate us properly regarding Inspired practices.

Your extensive practice under your parents serves you well; it doesn't even explode once.

For that reason, I feel like our parents were trying to prepare us to be the best Inspired we could possibly be. I don't think they ever allowed us to Surge and complete a project even once, so how would they realise that we were a particularly strong Inspired? I feel like we were already fairly strong, and they made us stronger by suppressing us, like a diamond is made harder by geothermic pressure.

On the other hand they might have done a good job until the brother was born.
she was the heir, was.

I suspect that was just another part of the pressure they wanted to put on us. By taking away our rightful position as heir and giving it to an untested baby, the insult of it would have driven us to have an even stronger urge to prove ourselves and SHOW THEM, SHOW THEM ALL!!! in typical mad scientist fashion.

Even if we didn't complete a project, they could likely tell by the partially complete bits. Stuff like the size of the mechanisms we managed to complete, what they were able to do, the overall goals, etc, could tell them a lot, I think. It's the same as analysis of a partially destroyed piece of tech, which we seem to be able to do.

While a slot is not in use, it will be used to charge one of eight batteries located near the back of Prometheus's central orb. These batteries can be removed and used to power inventions without the need for rifts or cables.
Are these cross-compatible with Skybreaker's batteries?

Maybe, but I think it's equally likely that the Light will simply choose a champion, either from the population of the League, or outside it, and burn the place to the ground. It depends heavily on if we're in a position to do that safely, since the Light seems to like us enough to worry about our safety.
On a meta level, I suspect it depends on what we decide to do. If we go burning the League down, then the prophecy was about us all along. If we leave and don't come back, the prophecy had nothing to do with us. If we take over the League for ourself, it'll turn out to be about our main antagonist.

Unless, of course, @Alivaril has actual prophetic powers, in which case I have some investment question to ask him~

I suppose it's also possible they had the area blanketed in scouting spyclocks, but that seems unlikely, given the sophisticated design. They can't be that easy or cheap to make.
More likely would be they had the area blanketed with other, less advanced spyclocks - larger, or immobile, or camouflaged instead of invisible, or a combination of all three - then set the bird on us once they noticed us through one of those.

I suspect it goes both ways, depending on who's doing the asking. I'd consider all of these plausible scenarios:
  • Nobleman wants a wife who is safe an controllable; a non-Inspired woman would ideal but a very weak Inspired is a good second-best
  • Non-Inspired nobleman wants an Inspired wife to provide the Inspirational support his lands need; a weak or moderate Inspired is ideal, but a strong Inspired might end up dominating the relationship (or just blowing up the castle)
  • Inspired nobleman wants a wife who is an equal partner; the stronger the woman's Inspiration the better, so long as it's not stronger than his own (he wants a wife who can keep up with him, not one he has to keep up with)
  • Nobleman wants a wife who is as powerful as possible and doesn't mind playing second fiddle; only in this case is a stronger Inspiration better without limit

Not that I know of. But I haven't really inquired. And yeah, it does depend on our actions, I think.

That would rely on them being interested in the area, rather than the army or us. But that is much more plausible than them having many of this sort of spyclock.

Yep. But I doubt the norm amongst nobles is to completely reject a strong female Inspired. If the strength of the child's Inspiration has any association with the level of the parent's talents, the stronger, the better, at least in theory. Practice might be more complex, but it usually is, when it comes to relationships and attraction.

That said, they may have been worried we were at a level where kings, princes, and, most especially, Blackburns would find us as of interest. I can't imagine that it's uncommon for the objects of a high-ranking noble's affection, much less a royals affection, to get off'd by nobles trying to marry their daughters to said royal or noble, or by the daughters themselves.

Basically, we may have been of interest at a level where our parents couldn't be sure of keeping us safe, and thus they tried to keep the level of interest and danger down by making us look less appealing, possibly while quietly inquiring around, looking for a potential husband who would be able to protect us, and wouldn't mind us being stronger than them.

Of course, that's obviously failed catastrophically, but I doubt they're that worried about us, if they have any concept of how strong we are. I can't imagine the news from the League, if there is any, will make them worry more. Except, of course, that the odds of us becoming the object of a Blackburn courtship have just skyrocketed. That might concern them a bit.

@Alivaril: What's to the south of our parents' territory? How about the south-west?

I'm thinking that we head west-south-west-ish, hoping to pass through the League without seeing another living soul and come out on the side opposite our parents' territory.

[] Change course and leave the League. You've delivered your warning, now time to continue onward.

South is one of their allies for about another three days of travel followed by Ferrn, another monarchy. You're not sure but what's to their southwest; might be Ferrn, might be the League, might be something completely different. You think at least part of the region is supposed to be mountainous.

Honestly, being at one of our parents allies isn't the worst idea right now, given that they probably only want to capture us and not kill us.

-[x] Head for the mountains to the southwest. It should be sparsely settled, so it should be easy to pass through the League without being bothered and come out on its east border.
[X] Change course and leave the League. You did poke them with a rather sharp stick AND you were probably close enough for them to get a good look at you this time. You'd rather not risk Empowered coming after you.
-[x] Head north, back toward civilization you're vaguely familiar with.

Hmm. "Scattered villages in high passes" mountainous, or "bleak wastelands of snow" mountainous? A bunch of little mountain villages might actually be perfect; I suspect it wouldn't be too hard to trade room for the night for a bit of Inspired tech that'll make their lives easier.

"Scattered villages in high passes" sound about right.

So, I've been thinking. Since we will inevitably attract the attention of a Blackburn at this point, and since at least some of the thread are shipping in that general direction, we should probably have protections against the obvious attack vectors.

So, physical projectiles and stealth poisoning we have mostly covered. All projectiles, if we can hook Prometheus and the point-defense thing to Skybreaker. That leaves gas weapons as a fairly obvious vulnerability. We should maybe spend a light Surge on that at some point in the not-so distant future. And maybe something to test our food for poison while we're at it.

@Alivaril: I don't suppose our parents pulled a Wulfenbach and built up our immunity to common poisons?

Okay, putting up a new vote. I'd rather head away from densely-settled areas for now.

Okay, putting up a new vote. I'd rather head away from densely-settled areas for now.

Who says that the familiar lands we're heading to is densely settled? I'm expecting scattered hamlets and villages before we near any kind of town or city in that direction. And honestly, I'm not in favour of going to the mountains with all those isolated little communities that will instantly mark and remember us as foreign. I'd rather go to familiar lands where we will have some idea of the terrain and government instead of plunging totally into the unknown again.

To the best of your knowledge, most of the north is settled. Not densely, mind, but if it isn't a forest or solid rock, odds are someone is growing crops there.

Relevant:
To the best of your knowledge, roads tend to be fairly well-maintained. The League is practically a ghostland compared to what you're used to; you should be stumbling over a town of a couple thousand every fifteen kilometers and pass through twice as many villages on your way. You're genuinely hoping it gets more populated as you head further into the League since the alternative is both creepy and arguably unsustainable.

You're a bit fuzzy on the distribution of news, but you think peasants tend to be rather xenophobic. They may be surprisingly well-informed regarding events in their own countries, courtesy of newspapers brought by travelers, but their view of other countries leans from "merely inaccurate" to "foreigners eat children" depending on how recently they've been at war.

You also know there are plenty of people moving from farming villages into various towns, assuming said cities will have fairly well-paying factory jobs. Even if they do, you know it's practically blood money made from their own blood; conditions range from merely "Risky" to "The gases you inhale are toxic and you're literally reducing your lifespan every day you work there." So you believe peasants probably could move to better areas without very much trouble at all, but if all they can do is act as unskilled labor, would those areas be better for them?

V-v-v-vote change!

Which would give us more reality-warping if we Surge: a mountain village or a farming outpost?

Neither would really work. If anything, the ratio of benefits per person would be worse than in a city. Too many people doing the same or similar tasks day after day.
