Thing is that we'll get plenty of opportunities to grab Cryomancy later. Right now we should focus on building the most effective squad of Wyrdvanes we can manage.
Personally I think we should consider just how many shinnies we want to chase. Cryomancy is cool, but we would have to develop it and we are not the greatest pyromancer in the world.

I would rather spend our actions developing better telekinesis that more of our squad can use, doubling down on strength rather than chasing diversity for the sake of diversity.

That's why I picked biomancy for Kasa. Biomancy is going to be required to keep everyone alive. Chryomancy less so. I can see us investing actions into biomancy because biomancy does stuff telekinesis simply can't.

What's more critical is that it blends her biomancy and telekinesis, meaning we could develop our fine control and get the same ability, or even just lend her our power to borrow that capability with our beta level telekinesis. THAT is a shinny worth chasing.

I really think there is value in focusing on 2 main disciplines. For our squad that's mostly telekinesis and biomancy.

The hands interact with the Precognitive aspect by default. A good combination with Support and Medic. A melee fighter for challenges and with powerful support. Teamwork.

A heavy weapon carrier or a second melee fighter.

The question of universality is better suited. The second mission may be against the genestealers. The first is against chaos: Telepathic attack and/or corruption is no longer a mental weakness for the Psyker. A telepath is a bad decision.

In the newest Alpha Legion book, Renegades Harrowmaster, it is mentioned by several Alpha Legionaries that whatever the Alpha Legion thinks about the Imperium, Imperial Psykers sent to the battlefield are notoriously strong and capable.

The slightest unfixable mental defect or avenue of corruption is grounds for not being considered worthy. Sanctioning is based around this, finding the slightest flaw and either discarding the Psyker or closing it.

Pretty much the Catachan method of weeding out anyone who can't survive. Ruinous casualties but those who make it through are the best of the best.

What makes you think that?
It depends on what time scale you use because humans in 40K live really long life's even if unmodded and if in good conditions, this doesn't even get into using juvenat or biomancy to live for a couple centuries longer; so as long as we don't die we should be able to develop our abilities over time even if slowly.

Question @Mayto — would we would have to deal with what we choose for the psychic training plan during our deployment? For example, if we chose Induced Blindness for Cwenhild, would Cwenhild would still have to use warpcraft to see during our deployment? Also, does sanctioning happen before or after deployment?
 
Moving my Vote/Plan here in case it being before vote opening announcement causes issues.

Having read the All Guardsman Party recently and remembering the training camp arc, and taking into account Mayto's words about not making a party that falls apart if anyone dies I'm going to propose a plan based on some conservative options, generally ones that don't mean if a psyker is having a hard time with their powers for whatever reason, say being on a world that was trapped in the warp for millennia fighting chaos corrupted mutants. There wont be an issue.

It removes a path of corruption and a mental weakness, and most crucially, doesn't blind them! The skin is because I think that's neat.

The reduced dependance on tech and psyker powers to move removes a potential point of failure, and sometimes you just need something utterly smashed or butchered. I don't think he'll be our actual apprentice, but this seems good.

Honestly Warhammer is a setting were "MORE FIRE" can go either very badly or Very Well, I'm rolling the dice here. I do insist we give them teeth though, having had my teeth removed myself I must say life is so much better with them. Plus she helps act as a comms person if we need that due to equipment malfunction.

I just think it's safer to not have to rely on psychic powers whenever you don't have to. They deploy as part of a group, this helps the entire group and them being Cadian probably means they've got a decent sense of tactics to help with this.

We travel to a world full of chaos corruption an mutated flesh on our first deployment, if we were fighting Orks or Tau, or most other forces I'd say go full biomancy but in this case stability seems more important. He'll be angry but his family will be there when he gets his memory back, I will admit this might be risky with Cold Turkey in making them really hate us

Besides the fact that you're a kind and merciful QM? 😁

The stated requirements to develop cryokinesis are an intrinsic understanding of cold and (likely) significant pyrokinetic potential. That's not exactly the highest of bars. While the chances of coming across another candidate by accident aren't great*, the odds get a lot better if we actually go looking intentionally for such a candidate.

First method that comes to mind is if we arrange for a rogue psyker hunt on an ice world. You did already mention that expeditions beyond Odium were a future option. Or we could seek to engineer it ourselves, using heat manipulation as an intermediate step.
