A Game of Supers (The Gamer/Original Superhero Setting)

Not gonna lie, the whole thought of the options has me hype. Welcoming ourselves to the criminal underworld. Any thoughts for a name? We haven't exactly come up with a gimmick but we should.

That really is an important thing. So how about that: You guys post a few name suggestions and I'll make a poll to decide.

[X] Meditation. Trying to block out the distractions would be good.
[X] Rob a store. Survey had gotten you information about places with valuable things and low security, and you knew a fence.
-[X] Pretend to be an employee, moving stock from this store to another store. Should be able to nab a couple grands worth of items before anyone really starts to suspect.
Get us money to buy gear, and remain largely anonymous
[X] Learn a useful miscellaneous skill.
-[X] Disguises
-[X] Sneaking
To help with our Acting skill, we can get an ability to help us with blending in even better. Combined with a talent to draw less attention in general when we don't want to be noticed, and we can break into a lot of places. Once we get Lock-picking as well, that is.

Whatever it is, make sure it's something that a costume can be easily modeled around. Our cloth level is not that high yet. Not until we raise the skill a bit.

@Kinni You never did give us identifying features, those kind of matter. Black Widow is Black Widow because the all black outfits and the red hair. What hair color do we have, how tall are we for a 14 year old, etc.

You guys already know I want the knife to be a part of our thing. So... Shiv? Sitletto?

Yeah, I like Shiv. The image I am trying to sell is that it's obvious we're young, etc. Calling ourselves Dagger is a bit... eh. But, still. We we might be a bit rough around the edges, new to this, young, shorter than everyone around us but we are still a sharp little thing. Dangerous if underestimated.

Shiv.

Okay. Tomorrow I'll write up a description. Do you want any other similar information? Because that's the moment to ask.

Identifying features, what she looks like, how tall, what she weights, eye and hair color, etc. Does she have any family or friends, what are they like?
What kind of clothing preferences does she have? How does she dress?

Wait do heroes and villains here wear masks?

What's the climate as far as rules of engagement? Do heroes kill, do they not? How much is killing frowned upon by villains themselves?
Like, in the gang fights do people regularly die or do they just beat each other up and posture?

[X] Research a gang. The Red Claws had a pretty interesting structure, and you thought it could be possible to take advantage of that for your own goals.

-[X] Urban tracking
-[X] Acrobatics/Parkour

Canon Omake: Thoughts
Inscrutable stood in her workshop, busily tinkering away at her latest effort. She would not call it a weapon yet, not until it could be used as such.

Still, she felt she was close, she knew she could get it to work. Whatever answer eluded her, she knew that it was in reach all she needed was...

She closed her eyes with a sigh. It was stress. Merely that.

Things had picked up in the recent month and she could feel both the pressure and the promise of victory.

The Red Claws had been pawing at their borders and the heroes snatching at the scraps that broke free. Yet, with all that, she knew that she had the upper hand.

She felt her lips curl into a smile. All of them thought they had her measure.

A part time gang leader, small time tinker and arms dealer. She had let them think so while she built her power base.

She had been careful, almost too much so, to not push past what they thought her and her people were capable of.

But, with the actions of the Red Claws, with that bitch Crusader thinking she could attack her. No.

It was was time to pull back the curtain a bit.

This, this in her hands might not yet claim to be a weapon but she had made several others that could and it was time to see how they could do in the hands of her people.

Yes, it was time.

[X] Infiltrate a gang. The Inscrutables had a surprisingly lax policy for accepting new members. You could potentially infiltrate the gang and eventually deal with Inscrutable directly.
[X] Focus on raising the level of the skills you already developed.

Acrobatics/Parkour is good for escape and combat, but Disguises are better for synergy with acting and avoiding people realizing who we are. We have a shitton of skills and that makes us a good infiltrator/ninja-type person.

So infiltrate other peoples' setups, steal their technology, and build up our skills, personas, and a couple of caches.

Shadow-boxing over meditation because the former helps with all of our various combat lineages whereas the latter is just like... useful for magic if we had any. Maybe we should learn weapons crafting or chemistry in the future?

Meditation so far has given us better focus and memory, which by itself is something rather good for all skills we wish to learn going forward, and it can conceivably synergize with Self-Hypnosis by giving us a far better understanding ourself and how our own mind works, helping us purposefully change our own mental states and ignore distractions and what not. Plus, Magic is awesome and meditation will probably be the main way to get it if getting it is possible.

I don't have any name/theme ideas, partly because I think it's still way to early for us to really set up any lasting identity for ourselves. We are just getting started. We aren't ready for prime time or anything. We've only been preparing for one month. We don't have a theme or a plan of action set up, we are still scrambling for the basics, seeing what skills might work or synergize with what and so on.

You're right, It is early, which is why I'm just proposing the idea and asking for details for us to build off of. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm just asking for discussion and going over future possibilities.

Hm, currently new to this excellent piece of Quest.

I'd want to call ourselves Arcturus, simply because it sounds snazzy, lol.

Well sure, YOU aren't, but I'm getting the idea that Kinni is attempting to finalize stuff. Unless we get a bit of a time-skip thing, it feels like it'd still be too early for a few more turns.

Throw out some suggestions and he'll put together a poll. Making it sound like we are making an actual decision soon.
I'd like a poll too, to see where everyone's head is at. We don't need to make a permanent decision but wouldn't you like to know what names and themes are being considered by your peers and which ones seem to have the most appeal?

Tbh I'm not that interested in self-hypnosis. It sounds weird and kooky and I just want us to be a ninja.
Shadow-boxing has more practical use. It lets us develop our skills so that we can become ready for prime time faster, and so forth.

Any name and theme suggestions @Umi-san?
Name and theme suggestions for... what we plan on being?
We voted to be the mastermind, a manipulator. There are three ways to do that: leader, orchestrator-from-the-shadows, and random independent person who shakes things up.
Our skillset is ill-suited for leadership without more investment into academic skills like admin, law, finance, etc. and interpersonal skills like public speaking.
A combination of orchestrator from the shadows and random independent person seems well-suited to the "typical" SV play-style and to the main benefit of our quirk - i.e. the fast development of skills to an improbably high level.
As previously stated, such skills would lend us well to an infiltration attitude until our skills and stores of looted weapons and etc. are sufficient, and probably even beyond that. This would be the orchestrator-from-the-shadows approach. Accompanying it, would be the random person approach the yang to the orchestrator's yin in an open/closed theory of villain-hood. The whole point of being an infiltrator is not having your identities tracked back to you. So whatever identity we pick would need to be completely divorced from the concept of an infiltrator.
Therefore, I propose that we dress like princess peach and beat people up with an umbrella. Our name shall be "Milady" and our rule over this city shall be adorned with lace.

What ninja is any good at their job if they do not have high mental discipline and the ability to easily control how their own mind? Self-Hypnosis is only a more active form of Meditation after all. And something Ninjas, and really all High Level Martial Artists are known for, is meditating.
Meditation is Understanding your mind. Why you think and feel the way you do, how thoughts flow thruogh your head, and so on. This understanding allows one greater control, leading to increased focus, better memory, and if one is to believe in Ki and stuff manipulating the very essence of you to perform Magic.
Hypnosis, self and otherwise, is the Manipulating of the mind. Understanding the specific mind in question is helpful, but not necessarily needed. It is the direct approach to what Meditation offers indirectly. We purposefully control our own mind, allows us to do things like fall asleep at will rather than laying and waiting for it to happen, attain great focus by keeping our brain away from distraction, Ignore Pain, push our muscles past their natural limits, slow down our perception of time, carry out acted roles with perfection for, for a short time, we ourselves believed we were who we said we were, and more.

Meditation and Self Hypnosis also lets us develop our skills so that we can become ready for prime time faster. But Shadow-Boxing is only good for martial skills, while Meditation and Self Hypnosis is good for all skills.

Okay so, @Umi-san, I agree on the self-hypnosis thing, by the way. I'm cool with interchanging Shadow-Boxing with Meditation, as long as it's couple with a Raise all Current Skills vote too. Because, we need to consolidate all the skills we already have at the moment, even if we're adding more. Being a ninja is a great idea, at least being one skill-wise. Advertising it outright is out, right?

I mean our persona. Yes, we're going to be a manipulator. But are we going to be the shadowy one that never interacts with the other villains? Are we going to be one who plays all against each other while we look innocent? Are we going to set our self up and be the girl behind the curtain of another gang? There are a lot of possibilities.

And, lmao. I am strangely okay with Milady as long as we get an umbrella that can stand up to all the fighting. We might have to make that ourselves. @Kinni what skills do we need for you to let us make that?

Edit: I just solved the whole problem.
Multiple personas.

We need to raise our acting skills.

For Name suggestion I'd vote for Scalpel. We're young, have training with short-ranged edged weapons (we also have monomolecular edged scalpels and super speed) and our charms and planning can be used for subtlety

Maybe high level martial artists in the fantasies the Japanese created around their stuff during the rise of bureaucracy, the meiji reformation, and the world wars. I.e., the image we've created is completely divorced from martial arts' historic roots. Just like ninjas, I guess, but I've never heard of a fictional ninja that meditates. Sure, paying attention to stuff and ignoring the cramp in ur thigh is important, but a) that's ignoring distractions not try to connect w/ ur chi or whatever the hell that one exhibit in tokyo talked about, b) our meditation is presumably high enough to ignore cramps in our thighs.

Shadow-boxing is good for anything where visualization is important. Which is a lot of things. Or at least that's my interpretation of what being good at imagining fake opponents would enable. if it's actually limited to fighting alone that's just incomprehensible.

Meditation is just letting your thoughts be a river. Not understanding your mind but accepting that it does whatever and that u don't give a shit. Hypnosis is just lying to yourself well and will eventually lead us down the path of insanity. We're not hydromancers. Aesthetically speaking, they're both bland powers that are permitted the nice sheen that New Age BS grants them. And when they inevitably appear in Gamer fics it's generally as a) dumb spiritual shit which slowly turn the entire story into a Kabbalic crossover or b) mana regen. We know people are psychic but not if that's transferable and we have no idea whether/not magic is part of our apparently more gamer mechanics. Thus, meditation may end up as an endless well into which we've thrown a bunch of $ for diminishing results. Similarly, self-hypnosis might allow for micro-improvements in our functionality r.e. sleeping or whatever, but that risks others figuring out our triggers and makes the story less fun.

Play them against each other while looking innocent. Just dip our toes in every pool, our finger in every pot, and try to make what we want to happen happen.
