Votes that do not follow the template will not be counted!

At this time I am using a counter system, listing the number of days votes take to be put into action. However for write-in votes you don't know how many days an action may take. For this we will use the old system of Major/Minor Decisions, and I will tell you how many days/weeks/months the plan will take. Remember that every month has 28 days, and that there are 13 months in the year with New Years as a special day alone outside the months. There is no leap year, as their calendar is not accurate to that degree.

Major decisions are any new endeavors. Finding new investments. Finding new allies (specify what type, where you're looking if possible, what you want from them, etc) finding new trainers, starting new training even if it is with people you already know... Anything new.

No mixing something that would qualify as a minor decision or free action into your major votes! If you have a question about your votes, ask me.

Talking with specific people about specific subjects. You can generally only talk with one person at a time with this. There are simple logical exceptions, Husband & Wife combos can be put together as one conversation, brother & sister, stuff like that. I'll clarify if a combo is unacceptable when I see the vote. This is also for continuing any long term action. Any major decision that you have already voted to start (not just mused about in-story) can be a minor action the next time around. Continuing training that you have already begun for example. Continuing a long-term investigation or plot. Stuff like this.

Making small talk with characters. You will not learn anything special really, but it gives you more insight into their backgrounds and history, can raise/lower their loyalty or other relationship points with you, etc. Raising/lowering and how much depends on rolls.

These can interrupt any current action(s) and will take precedence over the current plan. A way to change things on the fly as you discover new information or alternate ways to potentially enhance your plan, or change it completely if needed.

Remember for all votes if you take a guard or other individual with you, you will need to write-in which guard/person you take with you (just saying take a guard or ally will leave the decision of which one up to me) and also whether Daenerys tries to use any future knowledge on the decision as well if it is one of hers or she is present. (She still may decide to try and use her future knowledge without your consent if she thinks it necessary.) These details are sub-votes.

[] [Plan] X (Current Month, Short Term, Long Term, Immediate Actions, Purchases, etc.)
-[] Major Decisions: Character name here
--[] Major Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 1
--[] Major Decision 2
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 2
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 2
-[] Minor Decisions: Character name here
--[] Minor Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Minor Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Minor Decision 1
--[] Minor Decision 2
-[] Free Actions: Character name here
--[] Free Action 1
---[] Sub-conditions
--[] Free Action 2
---[] Sub-conditions

You get the jist of this.

However, under the plan vote, you will then put a "Priority" Vote.

[] Aegon Priority: 1. Major Decision 1, 2. Free Action 2, 3. Minor Decision 1, 4. Major Decision 2, etc.
[] Daenerys Priority: 1. Free Action 2, 2. Major Decision 3, 3. Minor Decision 1, etc.

This way we can vote on the general plan, then I can separate the order of events in said plan.

Don't put V1, V2, or any other such revision information into your plan. Just leave it like I have it. Nothing extra. The tally system will update to your newest post. No need to make version markers. It just makes things harder for me.

If an action in a plan is not one for a specific character, more a general idea of what needs to be done, it will still need to go into the priority matrix.

At the end of all your votes, put your reasons explaining your vote choice. As I've said before, a plan with reasons will get more weight than one without. Because reasons matter. I care about reasons more than numbers. I need reasons to help build the characters. Get used to putting reasons into your plans, as eventually reasons will become a requirement rather than a suggestion. This post will change when that occurs.

[] [Plan] X

You may (but are not required to) put additional reasons to agree with that plan beneath your vote if there are reasons for it that the original vote creator didn't put in that you thought of. The more/better the reasoning inside explaining a vote, the greater the chance it will be added into the story.

Votes are typically closed after either 12 or 24 hours unless real life interferes. Ties will be either decided by me, or by whoever is in the forum or the Discord that has not voted already at the time. I will @ whoever is currently in the forum or Discord that I choose to be the tiebreaker.

Plans have specific timelines. Immediate Actions are obviously immediate. Current Month is similarly self-explanatory. Short Term is something that can conceivably be done within 1-3 months, and Long Term is 3-6 months.

a group of ex-mercenaries and ex-guardsmen that are looking to move into the private sector.
So you've got pretty good technical skull but occasionally you write something like this which ruins the immersion. The idea of a 'private sector' in this setting is ridiculous. All mercenaries, as part of their definition, are private. Guards similarly are likely to be private, given the state was not developed nearly as much in the medival period as it is today

Heh, I thought about whether I should use that phrasing or not... and the military in me made me leave it in. Lol.

But no, your point doesn't stand (in Braavos) for a few reasons.

1. Private sector was meant to refer to those who had left the Braavos navy, and yes also the town guard. The army is paid for with taxes. (Although I did forget to put in the ex-navy somehow. I'll have to go back and edit that.)

2. Town guard would also be paid for with taxes. Otherwise they'd literally be owned by whichever noble paid for them as his or her personal army. When you have an elected govt... that doesn't factor so well. Yes medieval guards were usually either volunteers or else paid by the nobles, but that is more like in the seven kingdoms which is still feudal. Braavos is not a feudalistic nation. They're something of a republic.

Your problem is that you're making a false equivalency between the time when guards were not private in the real world and the time period itself. The guards weren't private for such an arbitrary reason like "it was the middle ages" they were private for a reason that existed during the middle ages. That reason is that the area and time you're speaking of was feudal for the most part.

However it had more to do with the type of government during that time, than the time period itself. If you have a democracy show up in the middle ages where everyone is a voter, you're not going to have noble owned town guards just because "middle ages bruh". It wouldn't last as a democracy if it did. Because that would upset the balance of power. Your power to vote means nothing if the town guards threaten you under their noble masters to make you "vote" the way the nobles want you to. (North Korea for example.) It would just be a farce that would swiftly change from a democracy to either a republic or feudal system. Coutries perform this farce now because of the world's standpoint against Kingdoms. No one likes feudal govts anymore, so they pretend.

Per the wiki: The Sealord of Braavos is the ruler of the Free City of Braavos. His champion and protector is the First Sword of Braavos and he resides at the Sealord's Palace.

Statues commemorating past Sealords and their achievements line the canals of Braavos. The office is not hereditary; one of Braavos's citizens is chosen to be Sealord by the city's magisters and keyholders through a convoluted and arcane process. The choosing process is intense, described as "knives coming out". Once chosen, the Sealord serves for life, but some will try to cut that life short to effect a change in policy.

Now in a republic, either all the voters are paying the guard, (which would fit your premise, and is a viable option) or the taxes are. Considering how much Braavos is about money being a nation based on trade, the merchants wouldn't want to pay on their own, when they could split that expense among everyone else. Since canon doesn't say otherwise, and either option could potentially fit the type of govt Braavos has, I decided they get paid from taxes. Merchants are greedy in every era after all.

In the feudal nations, (again, like the seven kingdoms) you'd be correct however.

This boils down to more of "how Braavos is different from all the other cities". Having been formed by prior slaves, it is fairly "liberal" compared to the rest. More "progressive" one might say.

Awfully quiet here, no?
Meh. If no one votes by my tomorrow, I'll just roll for the choice. People are probably pretty bored since these technical choices have been coming up more than story ones, but it's kind of the nature of the beast at this point. Thankfully, we're right where story starts happening again.

All that said, the term "private sector" felt a bit off even to me as I typed it. Is it bugging people a lot? I'm certainly willing to change the phrasing if it hurts immersion too much.

@FractiousDay Edit: And now I see why you mentioned the mercs. Somehow I put mercs and town guard instead of ex navy and town guard when I wrote that bit. Damn. Well pointed out. Human error affects us all.

- [X] Hire the pair from Lys - 12 CW/month

As stated before, they could be mistaken for ourselves by any assassins that are out for our lives. And, I've got a soft spot for former slaves.

[X] Hire the guards.
- [X] Matalarr of Lys. 10 - SD/month

Same as above, but with him duelwielding he'd be a pain to kill by any normal knight.

[X] Write-in.
- [X] You've heard of the Faceless Men before, expert assassins that, for a price, might just kill anyone for you. Maybe you should pay them a visit?

But no, your point doesn't stand (in Braavos) for a few reasons

So I'm not actually protesting against the idea of publicly paid guards. You say 'ex guardsmen', which I assumed meant ship guards, personal bodyguards, caravan guards and so on. I thought this because they are mentioned in the same breath as mercs, meaning they're in fairly transient employment, rather than state employees. It also might be because I still had 'private sector' distracting me so I was inclined to think the guards were private ones.

While I acknowledge that Braavos is more advanced socially than other states, I think it's somewhat unfair and feels like you're moving the goalposts of the defenition, even if unintentionally.

That's my main point, which is why I think the private sector is a problematic phrase.

I'd also contest however your portrayal of Braavos. You seem to be saying they're democratic because they vote. Fine, so was Athens. However I don't think you can call either truly democratic, meaning the remarks about the guards are somewhat questionable.

For example, Braavos is based on Venice, and like Venice, Braavos is a maritime city. Therefore like Venice the citizen soldiers are going to be serving at sea as citizen sailors. Additionally, I think the military conflicts Braavos has been in have historically been maritime ones. Meaning any army is going to suffer, just as happened historically.

Yes there might be a few guards for the Sea lord and maybe a few other important things like the Titan and the Arsenal but there obviously aren't many given Sam tries to murder Daeron and that Summer Islander has to deal with it rather than guards. The braavos (the guys not the city) walk about challenging people to duels and stuff without censure.

There are also a few other cities like Volantis which are also 'democracies' but clearly aren't, given theres the fiery hand, and a load of other armed people wandering about. The triarches obviously don't have the monopoly on the legitimate use of force. They even just try and bribe people with prostitutes and give out money from votes. So yea, hardly democraticly elected executives using public money to pay from guards

Reason I voted the way I did was we need loyalty so i want the ex alaves we need protection round the clock so dany and ageon get a bodygaurd we need to know what they stand for belive that type of thing amd we need to start making money

To be clear - I'm not saying Braavos is democratic. I used a democracy as an example, but stated that Braavos was a republic.

Now there are indeed various sub-types of both democracies and republics of course. America for example calls itself a democracy, but is not. It is a democratic type of republic. As in Republic first, democratic sub-type. People forget that line of the pledge of allegiance "...and to the republic, for which it stands..."

Braavos is a republic, though. Triarchs are a republic too, but they are a feudalistic republic. Republic as in a few members vote for the benefit of the whole, feudalistic because who those members are is hereditary if I remember correctly. So of course despite both Pentos and Braavos being Republics, they are very different. Sub-types matter.

As for democracies, I don't think we've ever had a true straight up democracy ever in history honestly. At least not in any major nation. It would take too long to do anything. Could you imagine if every single person in a country had to vote on every single policy change? Pshh....

Your point about the maritime bits is spot on. There are only a few paid by the state. Which is why they come recommended by the Iron Bank. They're the top tier, and that's what the bank scouts. That's the "former navy" that you saw in the line. The "guards" I am speaking of however are the town's guards, if that was unclear. The local "police force" for simple arrests and the like. Are there many of them? No. Despite modern video game portrayals, town guards were often scarce in number, and thus couldn't handle the actual load of patrolling the cities they were supposed to protect. However there are some. And they do retire to easier jobs when they are getting too old to chase young thieves through dark alleyways.

Edit: If I moved the goal posts, it certainly wasn't on purpose. Again, I'm definitely open to changing the phrasing. If I wasn't military myself and thus used to hearing that phrase all the time, I wouldn't have even used it. I'm just waiting to hear if others found it jarring before I decide. Any other questions?

We should hire at least two guards. That way if Dany needs to go do something by herself for some reason then she will have a guard to protect her.

Hugo, when a vote has the little - in front of it, you need to keep it under it's header vote for the tally to work properly. Meaning you need to keep "Hire the family prior" under "Hire the servants" and your choice of guards under "Hire the guards" just like I had it. Otherwise your vote gets tallied as a single vote all by its lonesome.

Please copy and paste the votes as I provide them. When I make them in weird formats, I do so to ensure proper counting.

The bank may be interfering more than usual but that could simply be them wanting to make sure we are alive and in good health to motivate Robert to honor his debts. Therefore I see no reason not to go with the pair from Lys.

[X] Hire the guards.
- [X] Boromun from the Stepstones. - 12 SD/month

Boromun is a great catch. He has already shown to put moral principals over personal gain so if we can earn his loyalty we probably don't have to worry about him turning against us. In addition, he has at least a rudimentary knowledge of ships which may come in handy when / if we want to invest in merchant ventures. If Matalarr is good enough to use two swords and survive than he is probably very skilled.

The sooner we find someone to work the farm, the sooner we will start to see a return.

Sorry I am on my mobile phone so it is quite hard to vote. If I get home before the vote ends I will edit it. Thanks for the clarification.

I'd like to find someone to farm for us and maybe it can be the family prior but who knows.

The slaves are likely to be hired by a noble and draw eyes off us.
If they are not hired, we shall recommend them.
They are more useful as secretaries when we have a proper fake identity set up.
No need to draw eyes on us.
The family OTOH can give us a bolt hole to run to.

[X] Hire the guards.
- [X] Rashad from the east. - 8 SD/month
For detached duty like guarding the eggs/whoever is in the house while we are out.
Also when we need intimidation/high stakes negotiation.
- [X] Matalarr of Lys. 10 - SD/month
For acting like family in public.
The stepstones one might sell us out.
