Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

I did not express the write in well, I wanted it to come across more as confiding in her as one would a spouse when you have trouble and to be honest in our relationship.
Thing is - for good Empress it's expected to be her husband's right hand... or left hand... or whatever her abilities predispose her to. So confiding her in doesn't make her closer in her position of wife-as-woman. And we already on the way to securing as wife-as-defacto-minister so such confiding is nothing more that "duh!" on emotional factor.

Right now what is decided is not if she would be faithful and dutiful comrade that will suffer all hardship of rule with us while supporting in all she can. It's if her mask of honorable stoic indifference on our funeral would be in fact mask - or she will just feel "duty well done" without any problems of holding tears.

We have had Toturi I who towards the end was captured and corrupted by the lying darkness, Toturi II our aunt who seized the the throne after her father's death despite Sezaru being the legal heir before stepping down and bringing forth the challenge of the 4 Winds. The 4 winds were the children of Toturi I, our aunt, our uncle Sezaru, our uncle Kaneka and our father Naseru. Our father won and now we are his son and the 4th on the throne.
Going by the 4e Sourcebook 'Imperial Histories 2' Sezaru was never the legal heir. Or at least there's no indication of it. Now granted the wiki does say otherwise, but I can't seem to find the source for that and it's odd as hell that is case anyways.
Kaneka is the oldest child, but Tsuado was the oldest legitimate child. There's really no reason to designate Sezaru over Tsuado and a lot of reasons not to. Regardless it doesn't really matter because Empress Kaede essentially denied the position of Emperor to all of them because her position of Oracle of Void meant that any choice she made would be over stepping her bounds as Oracle. Instead she opted to let the 'mandate of heaven' choose who will be Emperor. In practice this meant essentially 'let them argue it out until they kill Daigotsu and Naseru ends up with the position by default.'

TLDR it's all Toturi's fault, and if you're willing to not randomly go look for your bastard and get murdered by an Oni it'll probably work out.

Alright so Kiss, is tied with Kiss and Cuddle. So I'm going to roll 3d10 for a TN of 15. If we get higher, it's just cuddling, if we get lower things will go more extreme. I'm going to employ a fade to black for anything beyond teen.

Which brings us to the pregnancy mechanics I suppose.
So the mechanics are simple I think.
Roll a d10. If you get a 9 or higher, a child is made. You gain a +1 bonus for each 3 month period you try to make a child. (So if you tried for a year to get a kid, by the end you'd have a +4 to the roll)
If you roll a 10, reroll, if it lands on another 10 its twins.
If a child is made roll another d10. Evens it's a boy, odds its a girl. (In the case of twins repeat this)
Shugenja potential will be rolled by me when your child is born.

Example
FunkEdgemaster sees my request for a roll
He rolls 1d10 and gets 9 (So one child)
He then rolls another 1d10 and gets 5 (Thus it's a girl)
FunkEdgemaster is then done rolling.

Second example

DanceMagicFlame sees my request for a roll, now the playerbase has been voted previously to try for a child but failed, so they currently have a +1 bonus
She rolls a 1d10 and gets 8, with the +1 that equals to 9 and that means that a pregnancy happens
She rolls another 1d10 and gets 4 (thus it's a boy)
DanceMagicFlame is done rolling

Third Example
WolfWindNinja sees my request for a roll. As before the playerbase has voted to try for a child
She rolls a d10 and gets 9, the +1 turns it into a 10
She then rolls another d10 and gets 10 again, this means you have twins on the way.
She then rolls a d10 for each child getting 2 and 8, so it's twin girls.
WolfWindNinja is done rolling

Year 1: Love and Cabinet Meetings
--Kiss her

You struggle with the thought only for a moment, you pull your back from her and turn around, craning your neck around to catch her lips in yours. Kaname lets out a surprised noise, as she hesitates for a moment, but only a moment as she begins to kiss back.

How to describe it? Poets compare it to the touch of flower petals, of silk of a dozen things that are soft, yet somehow firm in their own way. As you taste the subtle mingling of sweat, incense and lipstick on her lips, you decide none of them are right.

The kiss ends, and you stare into her eyes as she stares into yours. You see something between lust and love in them, and find yourself shifting to face her fully. Without a word Kaname sits down on your lap and places her arms over your shoulder.

She leans in again and kisses you, you kiss back, your body revelling in hers, her teeth nibbling on your lip as your hands run up and down her back. There aren't really words, as her hands move into your hair, soft calluses gripping your head, as you both lose yourself to this.

Once again the kiss breaks, but only for a moment as you kiss her in turn, letting your tongue press against her mouth, exploring her body with your own. The soft moans surprise you are your hands grasp her hips.

How long your hands roamed over her body you couldn't say, feeling her through the kimono tracing the countless tiny scars that one gains through training, every one of them only serving to heighten her beauty to you.

How long your mouths explored each other, you didn't know as you kissed her and were kissed back, moving down each other's necks and back up...finally you stop to breathe, both of you silent as the candle flickers in the night. The tiny flame showing the deep flush on both of your faces, the heat of your bodies reflecting each other to a fever pitch. You both want more, you need more.

You take your hand and place it on her chest and you give an experimental squeeze...it feels firm yet soft, gently you lift and massage her, fingers brushing against her through the fabric. Before too long you find your other hand reaching up, doing its best to feel and experience your fiancee Kaname lets out a cute short groan, whimpering "Hisao..."

Hisao, your name becomes a talisman that cuts through the fog. Hisao, you are...right, you can't do this, no matter how much you want to, no matter how much you want to make her scream your name. It wouldn't be right.

You pull back from her, and she looks at you hurt.
"What did I?"

With a shake of your head, you lower your hands to her waist.
"Nothing Kaname-chan...were I not Hisao...nothing on Earth could stop me...but I am...and I have to do what's right...even if I don't want to."

Kaname puts her hands on your waist mirroring your actions.
"I can feel how much you want to...but you're...a better person than I am...I never thought it would be like this."

Her voice is soft and full of disappointment, but also understanding.

"...I'm sorry"

She leans into you resting her head on your shoulder.
"You don't want to dishonour me...I can't be too upset with that can I?"

"...well you could" You say quietly.

Kaname lets out a small sad chuckle, that reminds you of rain.
"No I couldn't. I do want you to care about me."

"I do care about you" comes from your mouth.

"Then, you'll let me in? Tell me why you were drinking from the bottle when I came in?" She asks.

You take a deep breath, you know that she's hurt because you stopped, but that if you want this to happen again, to just be a man and woman who are learning to love each other, then telling her what happened is what must be done.

For a moment you nuzzle into her neck, looking for the words.

"My uncle told me of two threats to the Empire, one north with the Yobanjin and one to the west with the Shadow Dragon. I sent him north, to die while destroying the threat. I sent my uncle on a suicide mission Kaname." You say.

Guilt, comes rushing back, guilt at making the choice, guilt at sending someone who had once been the hero of the Empire to die, because that was what you had to do. Maybe if you were better, smarter, stronger, you'd find another way...but you aren't.

Kaname goes silent for a moment and then says.
"You are a good man Hisao, even if I wish you were a little less right now."

She pulls back from your shoulder and kisses you again. Showing that she believes that with deed and words. That she still cares for you, wants you, even though you sent a family member to die.

You kiss her back.
"Thank you Kaname"

For a moment there is again silence.
"Hold me?" She asks.

You nod, and pull her close, leaning back against the chair. No more words are spoken as you fall asleep in her embrace, and she in yours.

----------------------------------

The sun shines high in the sky as you look around at your assembled council, the Jade tournament isn't over, but your lunch with Shem-Zhe has morphed into a cabinet meeting. while in the abstract, you know that nothing can really be done, you want to talk about this, and get options. Maybe you missed something.

You steeple your hands.
"And that is the situation as we know it."

Kaneka is the first to speak.
"Loosing my brother is unacceptable to me. The Legion of Two Thousand is already in the north. I can send them to reinforce him."

"The Legion of Two Thousand, barely has numbers to it's name, in case you forgot they along with the Phoenix expended a great deal of effort taking Forgotten City. They're in no state to launch a campaign already." Akane returned coolly

"Tell me then Kitsuki-san, what would you do?" Kaneka demands.

"I would have the Scorpion prepare a strike force and assassinate this Shaman with Isawa-san."

"Bayushi-san will never go for that. It's not a good investment" Hiroko interrupts now.
"Right now the Scorpion have no reason to seriously help."

"I am certain I can convince them of our need" Akane says firmly.

Noritoshi sighs as he puts down his tea cup.
"Leave it to me then to put forth the unpopular position. Let Isawa-san win or fail on his own merits but prepare for the worse. Kitsuki-san believes there is an internal threat to the Emerald Empire, let us turn our efforts on that, and let Isawa-san die with dignity"

Kaneka's low pitched growl, shows just how unpopular that decision is with him.
Shem-Zhe coughs.
"As cruel as that is Kakita-san, I don't think that will work either. Isawa-san needs power and reinforcement yes, but I believe it is only the Heavens who could provide enough. Allow me to construct a ritual to beseech the Dragons and the Fortunes to help him."

Hiroko rolls her eyes.
"Or we could just you know pay the Yobanjin to fight each other? Solve two problems at one that."

The debate continues for a time in that vein, but in the end all eyes turn to you.

You weight the merits of each plan in your head before finally deciding.
"I have heard your council and we will..."

[] Use Kitsuki Akane's plan (TN 35, 31% Chance with free raise)
[] Turn our focus inward as Kakita Noritoshi suggests (TN 25 52% Chance)
[] Let our Shogun take action with his plan (TN 35, 11% Chance with free Raise)
[] Employ our Treasurer's idea (TN 30, 37% Chance with two free raises)
[] Turn to the Heavens as Horiuchi-san wishes. (TN 30, 20% Chance with one Free Raise)

Suddenly Scorpions on the Dark Oracle may not be the worst idea... @gman391 can you recall if the clans have faced off against the dark oracles before? I know there was a time after the time we started and I think I remember reading about one beforehand but that would have been from before the time period when I was involved in the RPG and CCG so not entirely sure.

Edit:
Also are there any clan champions present? With two confirmed external threats I really think we need to read them in. Plus the Unicorn can confirm what is happening in the Burning Sands.

Collectively the Dark Oracles are behind the Elemental Terrors...but here is what I know as follows

Dark Oracle of Air: Soshi Jamyako, currently chilling somewhere in the Valley of the Centipede, doing approximately jack all, angsting over her Son turning evil

Dark Oracle of Earth: Yasuki Nokatsu, currently up to something in the Twilight Mountains with a Bloodsword, currently being tracked by Asako Inquisitors. Was involved with the Fall of Otosan Ochi but not much else.

Dark Oracle of Fire: Dead, but the Former Dark Oracle Agasha Tamori was behind the Phoenix-Dragon war and was confronted and killed in that conflict.

Dark Oracle of Water: Matsu Turi, has attacked the Lion multiple times, currently licking his wounds Demon's Thunder Falls.

Dark Oracle of Void: Tonbo Toryu, has been there, but not done much else.

So... if we don't reinforce *somehow*, Kaneka is going to be Displeased. Unfortunate, given that Earth is the best success chance we have right now. Sending in troops looks unlikely to succeed (and plausibly so) and will get our samurai killed at a time when they're pretty thin on the ground to begin with. Akane's plan looks like it has the highest chance of success, but the Scorpion will want concessions for it. Perhaps we can offer them the spymaster slot? Personally, I sort of feel like the Scorpion would feel better to have something to hold over us. For that matter, the Chancellor position has opened up... though I'm somewhat less inclined to fill it at the moment. I rather like the idea of throwing around money or calling on the favor of the Heavens, but they're pretty likely to fail. Basically, they're there as options to be doing Something, and to curry favor with... whoever wants that favor, and to be relatively low-cost.

I understand that this is Not How It Works, but I'd have been tempted to go for a combined attempt - pay off some Yobanjin on the one side while also turning to the Heavens and/or sending in the assassins on the other, for example. I suppose, though, that the idea is that we don't have the free resources to devote more than one plan's worth of assets to the fray.

Before I vote, Does the Free raise our chances of success or the Magnitude of success?

Because the Water choice has 2 free raises

[] Employ our Treasurer's idea (TN 30, 27% Chance with two free raises)

Both and, or to be more clear. Free Raises are typically used to lower the TN to something more manageable. However, if you naturally roll well enough to beat the TN, then the Free Raises will increase the magnitude of the success. I have actually factored in the free raises when calculating the probability although it seems I mistyped 37 as 27.

[X] Employ our Treasurer's idea (TN 30, 37% Chance with two free raises)

Best chance other than leaving Uncle to die, so going for it.

Besides using only Air and Earth choices might lead to problems.

Sorry for not catching this earlier. The Clan Champions are about a few hours ride out at this point heading home but it's easy enough to recall. Functionally Horiuchi Shem-Zhe should be able to fill you in on the Burning Sands. (Short story 'there have been rumours about stuff in Medinaat al Salaam but there's always rumours and Chagatai's directed his attention inwards)

Two things to say.

One, liking the quest, really surprised it's not more popular.

Two, I can't believe it was chosen to believe Kakautsu. What was revealed of his character and the extremely suspicious timing of his revealing of the supposed plots was more than enough clue.

It was less we believed him and more we couldn't afford not to.

Eh. Rokugani culture is so alien that it makes getting into the story hard. This gets exaggerated when QMs recognise they tend to share a fanbase with setting knowledge and stop explaining stuff like who are the Lions? And no this is not an anthro furry quest.

I'd be willing to bet that just about every thread on the forum tagged L5R has more or less the same first page on top veiwed.

I legitimately do try to explain things as they come up, I don't always succeed. (See my apparent failure to explain who the Yobajin and what the fuck Medinat al Salaam is an update ago) But I try.

I got through 3 of the clans and some of the common terms last weekend. This weekend I want to get through all 5 remaining great clans and also add into the common terms the various names and locations of the setting (Burning Sands, Yodotai, Yobajin, etc...)
