In Memory of Hades
14th of March 2007 A.D.
Meeting his eyes, something lethally serious slipped into her voice. "The implications of what we are can take time to sink in, but
we are Exalted. Each of us bears a weapon meant to allow mortals to do the impossible, and what you have touched on so far is just the beginning".
"A weapon?" the sharpness of his question interrupts you before summoning Usum ironically enough. If we ever end up in a place where there's more then ice around I'm going to have to come up with something to call him in my head at least. "Whose weapon?"
"Wish I could tell you," you shrug quite sincerely. "I have a whole bunch of speculation, not much in the way of hard facts, it could be that hard facts can't exist from that far back, everything about the world changed and changed again
except..."
"Huh...Like Zircon crystals on the soul."
"Pardon?" It's not that you didn't hear over the wind, it's that the word makes no sense. "The gemstone?"
He seems half lost in his own thoughts, the man you had interrupted from seeking death, who into death would walk, but your question starts him out of it and into explaining: "The oldest rocks, we know of come from the Archean, but those aren't the oldest solid rock that ever were so we keep looking. Eventually someone figured out that some small zircon crystals can become embedded in other in igneous or metamorphic rock, Hadean zircon from when the earth was hell. You wouldn't think geologists would come up with that name just by looking at us would you? On the other hand it was also us who named the next great span of time 'the Archean', literally the 'old aeon'." The joke had the air of one he'd told before and to a an audience larger than one.
"I can set your mind at ease when it comes to aliens though," you casually add your own 'joke' to the mix. "The nearest intelligent alien life is 100 lightyears in that direction."
"You're not...?" he searches our face.
"On the tactical level, I am a melee specialist and information gathering with a variety of supporting abilities and resources to support both roles." So saying you put on the blandest butter wouldn't melt in your mouth expression you can manage.
Perhaps at a loss for words, perhaps merely at a loss for polite ones he makes a circular motion with his hand for you to consider, a void in the spinning snow flakes.
"I'm unsure what you've seen of the real world, but I do not mean the 'melee' of some fledgling vampire excited about how they can shrug off a bit of small arms fire. I've parried cannons and cut through things stronger than any mundane steel. I've matched flaming brass against tooth, claw, and spell of things older than the language we're speaking right now."
You are watching very carefully indeed, not out of a sense of personal pride, or at least not mostly that. No you're trying to get his measure, not least because if you are about to take on some ancient monstrosity with only untested backup you want to have some clue what they can handle. And it's because you're watching that you catch it, the start at the word 'vampire', but he doesn't address it.
Instead one hand waves out into the white and seemingly from the trailing shadows of its passing a vehicle emerges, a thing to too-sharp lines and blood red markings that seems more coffin on wheels than snow-mobile, at least an explanation for how he hasn't frozen to death out here. "I am harder to hit and find it easier to hide in the shadows. From those shadows I can steal will to... act at all. Vengeful ghosts have been... speaking to me and I think I can move them to act so long as it is not opposed to their nature. Where will be all too many ghosts I'm afraid, sacrifices."
Instead of asking for more confirmation you get in the back seat. Sure you could fly faster, but it's not like something can surprise you out here... or in general given that your anima is still burning. But as the engine began to purr, one assumes burning the hopes of the damned or the like you can't help but return to that moment of recognition. Should you ask more to see what connection your new companion may have with vampires and of what sort? Or should you instead ask a more reliable source, costing you another mote of essence.
What do you do?
