Turn 1 (January 1991):
(Janyu Wong POV)
To think that starting in the morning, the thing that should have most worried you was the new phone numbers that Tokyo was going to be giving out since their new rapid improvement of the telecommunications network.
Yet by the afternoon, you were in a room with over ten other computer programmers and scientists, looking at a screen that was the size of a classroom projector, and on that projection was something that should not have been possible, even in your wildest imagination and hopes.
The Digital world, the simple programs and AI's you and the wild bunch had developed for a summer project… was still expanding. Impossibly so.
"Doctor Wong, I think you are the one that Dr. McCoy was saying would be able to brief us?" the man in the suit was rather firm in his tone, but you could tell, like almost everyone else here, he did not understand what the hell he was seeing.
You barely could too, but that wouldn't help anyone. "Yes, um." you looked at the projector and saw the markers on the tray. "Can I draw on this?"
There was a grunt, and then a nod, and you were given the go-ahead.
"Alright. Before we get started, you need to know that when we developed the original Digimon program, it was in several distinct, and isolated computer systems, basically with only the processing power of an average personal computer today. And when it was shut down, all the programs to our knowledge, were deleted, destroyed, or sold to Namco Bandi, for their IP purposes."
"Doctor Wong, I understand that you are trying to absolve yourself and your team of any wrongdoing, but clearly you did not know-"
"That's not what I am saying, sir." You found yourself looking down at the ground for a moment. "What I am saying, is that in our attempts to create the monster program, there may have been several different ways that the program could have gotten onto Arpnet or the internet, and other computers."
"And how would that happen?" A voice asked.
"Simple. Messages to other computers across campuses, floppy disks sharing different codes. The possibility is endless, but, it doesn't matter. Because the code was so primitive, that should not have caused anything to occur other than… simple computer glitches, viruses or other computer programing that could be fixed."
"And how could it lead it to this?" another skeptical voice asked.
Then you saw the line. They had poked forward, further into the digital world, or Cyberspace. "Don't you know? What did you see when you pieced together whatever you got in this space?"
There was silence, and the two leaders of this group were looking at each other. "It was a United States Data experiment, testing out a new anti-virus and security measure to protect it against foreign agents. Instead, they discovered-"
"The Digital world." You finished as you found yourself smirking. Finally some answers. "In our last days of the project, Dr. McCoy added in something that was more of a joke and a promise to his son, because he wanted to see the monsters we made change into some monsters that he drew. Evolutions, or digivolutions as his son called it, seeing as they were digital monsters."
You stopped and then started drawing. "And they evolved, to the point where there is a barrier between our world, and the digital one, one that is expanding in an almost unquantifiable way."
"That is our problem, Doctor Wong." The leader said. "We have no idea how this barrier came to be, we had asked Dr. McCoy about it, but you designed no such thing when developing the original digital monsters."
"We didn't need to, the project was so small and so lacking in resources that much of it was on a few computers." You said. "And as we said, isolated from the rest of any system."
"It was created by these… Digimon themselves?" The question was there, and no one knew an answer.
You drew the line where you saw the code, or rather shape, and it was… designed. "By something or someone, to separate our world, and the digital one."
"And what would happen if that barrier is broken?"
You only nodded and sighed. "Chaos, the end of the modern age as we know it."
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Mayumi was sitting down with Henry Rinchei and Jaarin, and they were watching some Anime, trying to get them to sleep.
"You haven't taken your eyes off them for a while?" She said softly.
You had guilt, but there was something else. Maybe… hopefully the simple idea of Digimon to battle and to make friends with them was still somehow there. Maybe.
"It's nothing." You said. "I'm just thinking about the past."
"You always said that the past was the past, and the future is far away, today is a gift, and that's why it's called the present," Rinchei said as Henry began falling asleep.
You smiled. "That's right, but I think it's time to go to bed, all of you, there's school tomorrow."
The TV turned off and the children began to clamber towards bed, and Mayumi waited until they were gone to speak. "What was the meeting about?"
"The Digimon."
"Don't bring that old ghost up, you couldn't have seen the explosion in that happening-" You sold your IP rights to Digimon a long time ago, rights that were worth tens of millions.
"No, I'm talking about the programming that designed it, it expanded."
Mayumi bless her, was always smart and understood computers better than most. But she did grasp the severity of it. "But you said it was impossible-"
"I know what I said, but I was wrong. Everyone was wrong."
"So what now?"
"They gave me a job offer, heading some scientific task force, an international one, designed to study the barrier that connects the world, and the digital world."
Mayumi was surprised. "Not Shibumi or Rob?"
"Gorou is in a coma, and Rob is caring for his dying son, and trying to raise his granddaughter. Everyone else is already in a position that is ill-suited for what this is. What this might become."
You found yourself sighing, feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders now. "I can't have anyone else make that choice, I have to."
Mayumi remained quiet. She remained that way for a long time. "You know I'm going to support you."
"Thank you."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The University Lab was not equipped for this. Twenty computers all connected to the network, woefully inadequate, and underpowered for the kind of work that was soon to be beginning.
You sighed. Well, time to pull an all-nighter.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You are Janyu Wong, head of the UN Sanctioned Taskforce, Digital Shield.
Your mandate is to only be active for one year, to study and see if the digital world is a threat.
You are its only permanent member. This task force is designed to focus on the digital barrier and study the digital monsters themselves.
In six months, you will give a report to the UN about the dangers of the digital world, and the digimon, which will determine the next course of action for the nations of the world.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You only have 4 Action points and are unable to recruit any additional members or gain actions at this time due to the decentralized nature of this organization.
Diplomacy:
[]Beg for more resources: It has come to your attention, that you are utterly begging for table scraps. You need more than that, otherwise, you are not going to get anything done. Heck, even a few grad students looking for extra credit will do! DC: 40
[]Talk to the Monster Makers: The Wild Bunch, the Monster Makers, are your old friends from college who created the Digimon, and maybe you can see what their insights are. DC: 20
[]Someone, Anyone Listen to Me: You are supposed to be an expert in the field, and you are, but the problem is, you need allies somewhere to actually listen to you, before a disaster strikes. DC: 60

Martial:
[]Training: you have been laxing on your Tai Chi since your kids were born. Maybe it's time to take it up again. DC: 50
[]Protecting the Lab: Your Lab, is pretty much the only place where this research is beginning, and you need to compile all the information here. You need to protect it from other… people. And maybe you. DC: 20
[]A Children's Card Game: Digimon and Duel Monsters are the hottest games on the market, so might as well get the kids a gift and learn how to play. It might be fun. DC: 30
---------------------------------
Stewardship:
[]Computers, computers… the Digital World for a Computer!: Your computers are old, inadequate, and frankly, insulting. You need better material, better everything. DC: 60
[]A Salary Akin to your Sacrifices: You are not being paid for any of this, despite it being an incredibly urgent inevitability that needs to happen. You do not want to have your home repossessed because you were not paid, or working a second job when your entire focus needs to be on this. DC: 50
[]Wants and Needs: You need to figure out what the kids want or need for school. DC: 20
