Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Arc 11 Post 15: To the Lost Isle Journeying
To the Lost Isle Journeying

5th of January 2007 A.D.

Lydia reaches out with her hands to both sides of the dark, though far from dingy alley. Mac after all would not permit something dingy so near to his door. The silver light around her hands fades to a color hard to name. Sepia maybe? The passage onward into the Spirit World certainly looks like an old photograph. It opens onto a street that isn't there anymore, alight with cast iron lampposts, lit not white or even orange but the fitful reds and yellows of whale oil, the phantoms of slant-roofed houses crowd against each other, not a one taller than the staple of a distant church upon which is impaled a great turtle, its shell stained by smoke, the last of its blood eternally staining the upper windows red.

"Well that's new." Harry sounds a little strangled, but Lydia only sighs.

"No, that's quite old, people just don't like to look up very often. Where do you think the word 'Illinois' comes from? The land remembers the people long after they are gone. Come on this way, we need to take find a ship on the lake, then before it casts off turn on our heels twice singing a windbass shanty. Can any of you sing? I have decent pitch, but I'm not that used to singing in English, much less shanties."

Tiffany nods, not seeming to notice or care when phantom wind blows her hair all about her this way and that. Mind it never gets in her eyes. Why does she get shampoo commercial superpowers? Life's just unfair sometimes.

Dad does not follow along at once, instead turning to give you a hug goodbye "Good luck Molly, stay safe!" With that he is soon gone amid the bustle of phantom crowds and the echo of feet long past.

"Our way is a lot more straightforward, you are never far from a way into the Summer Lands," the Archive explains. "Cinemas, theaters, even theme parks though... speaking of those never mention Disney to Titania, it's a sore spot."

"Do I want to know why?" you ask, amusement belying the words.

"Mab had a hand in the company's beginnings, it was and still is a practical means to keep old stories alive in a changing world and that they were a good fit for the Queen of Air and Darkness, for all the whimsy of their art the Walt Disney corporation is a mercantile endeavor. Those born of Summer's grace love art for its own sake, not for any use that it may bring. Just so they forge swords for the perfection of the craft, though of course a truly beautiful sword is one that cuts with deadly edge. In the Court of Avalon the Fair seeming is substance, though that does not mean they are obvious about it. A knight in shinning armor which seems in every way dedicated to their lord might wear pinned to their cloaks a spring of hollyhocks. If one should fail to recognize the mark of ambition that drives them, then the fault is with the watcher as far as they are concerned."

"Bloody peacocks," Kincaid grumbles as he lifts his employer over a patch of mud in the road.

"They use the feathers peacocks and all sorts of birds as well," the Archive continues, her tone still didactic, only the sparkle in her eye giving away the fun she's having. "The demimode of the Seelie has a love of codes and cypher, secret messages and hidden assignations to match the Sun King's court er... Louis the Fourteenth that is, though when indulge in courtly games they do so without abandoning their place in the greater tale of the realm. Not for nothing is the heart of that realm called Avalon, the Isle of Fruit Trees which men call the Fortunate Isle, though fortune and misfortune is as ever when dealing with the deathless fey is as much in the visitors hands as in those of the hosts. It's considered good manners to show some kind of spontaneity even if you are not caught up in its spell: splashing in the water, stopping to let to let the light wash over you. Personally I like to take off my shoes and run though the ever-green grass. Even to those unwise enough to pluck a flower, enraptured by their beauty or eat a fragrant apple which hangs above the path grace is usually given in the form of some small task, easily done, unless one has earned the ire of the Queen or the Lady."

"Good thing I haven't done anything like that," you say wryly. Odds are good you could have guessed from context and kinship to Winter's ways a lot of this, but it's still better not to take any chance. After all you will be paying for the privilege soon enough.

As you step under the arches of a theater the likes of which had never quite existed in Chicago, between statues of great and venerable lions under the pensive pensive marble gaze of Polymnia your young guide explains that while that is true you're not quite out of the woods yet. She's not sure what Titania specifically knows, but among the rumor mill of the fey more broadly 'The golden-haired daughter of the line of Carolo' is known is not without dread renown. To have escaped the depths of Arctis Tor amid a great battle that left Winter sore wounded is one thing, it might be counted merely luck, of which some mortals have a surfeit. But to have then this past Samhain come of of it with in some regard of Queen Mab by means still veiled that is the mark of one to watch with weariness.

What the girl offers next surprises you though: "Do you want me to spin you some attire for the meeting. I can't do anything trully enchanted on short notice, but cosmetic effects are easy enough and I know fashion no less than calculus, poetry or arachnology."

"Fashion, math, poetry and spiders, one of those things is not like the others," you laugh, but the girl just tips her head.

"Or maybe it's like of then and people just don't notice," comes the impish answer.

How do you want to present yourself to the Summer Court?

[] As Molly Carpenter, jeans and a T-shirt, you are above all else human

[] As the Queen of Sanctuary in royal garb, the sign upon your brow bright burning

[] As a skilled knight armed and armored, sword at your side but ready

[] Write in

OOC: Thanks to haveing Ivy to smooth things over you can skip a lot of rolls that you otherwise would have had to make, but how you choose to present yourself will still set the tone of the encounter with the Summer Court boardly and Titania specifically.

We come bearing dread news, and offering royal help, as an ally in the greatest war, and as a holder of legacy and power no less great than hers.

And Archive is giving us hints.

Call it hypocrisy, or selective blindness. But they are judging you, and making decisions based on that judgement, is a thing.

Powerful mortal magic workers beginning to reprise some of the shit that infamous predecessors got up to both besmirches their reputation AND makes everyone nervous.
Especially when it turns out that Molly is fairly magic agnostic, and can break down anyone for parts.
None of your examples really fit. Black magic is an established bias and what we're doing isn't the same. The blood curse and Kemmler's bullshit were high blunt instruments that either didn't care about casualties or reveled in causing as many as possible.

Comparing that to killing powerful people eaters is ridiculous. These guys do the same or worse all the time and work with others who do the same.

Mab made deals with the denarians of all people, and her only true beef was that they messed with her directly. We're nowhere near as bad as the people any one of the communicative supernatural powers call friends.
his is misleading.
Humans are permissive with regards to the use of lethal force against supernatural critters, sapient or otherwise.
Other applications of magic? Not so much.

For example?
Morgan was explicitly on Dresden's case about binding Fae in Storm Front when we first see him summon Toot-Toot.
Morgan was looking for the loosest excuse to kill Dresden. The council has a whole thing about how only they are allowed to summon and bind things, but get squirrely about people they think are irresponsible doing it.

There's a reason this didn't go any further than Harry's use of necromancy on a T-Rex did.

I get it, you don't like the idea. That's fine, but don't try to sell the idea that people who eat humans for breakfast, torture them for fun, or take money to kill things of all stripes are going to get upset that our enchanting isn't vegan.

I know you mean it from a political standpoint but killing whampires isn't really much different from killing humans as far as magic law itself is concerned. Its mostly a mental thing.
I think the distinction matters, but isn't necessarily a good one. It makes you a more willing killer of what you dehumanize, even if it's very human in most ways, but the council won't prosecute you for magic crimes against them.

In a way the magic corruption us helpful here, because most of them have been programming themselves with the idea that if it isn't human and you aren't excessive enough to disturb your peers you can kill or exploit supernaturals.

We were basically told that Molly would not be underestimated, thus "As Molly Carpenter…" is out in my opinion, since it would probably be seen more as a try to obfuscate rather than being informal.
I actually really like Artemis1992's take, but I think I like Yog's more, Molly is a Queen and is visiting another Queen in an official matter. I think emphasizing it and getting used to act as royalty she is, is a good idea in the long run.

Do we have time to change into that dress Molly wore to the white court purge? We can make that a suitably exalted look without spending essence constantly and the stories about our encounter with an outsider that night should have spread enough for at less some to be aware of it.

They like their symbolic displays, and showing up in her Outsider murdering dress is a decent stab at that.

Also because this isn't exactly an informal occasion even if it isn't some planned event.

We're going to make diplomatic contact with the sovereign of a major power to speak about a mutual threat and attempt to perform some politically delicate business with at minimum one of her most important direct subordinates.

We could show up in jeans and maybe nothing would come of it, but this isn't really the time.

Queen to Queen lets do it. Get in and get out. Make no more commitments during this meeting please!

VOTE
[X] As Molly Carpenter, jeans and a T-shirt, you are above all else human

RATIONALE
1)Ivy/The Archive just told us that Summer value spontaneity, or at least the appearance of spontaneity, even among guests.
Ergo, this is a situation where showing up in jeans and T-shirt actually is setting appropriate, and something they will actually appreciate as being in theme.

This makes our life, and this meeting, easier. On both sides.

2) This has a direct bearing on resolving the Lily's Splendor thing.

If we present ourselves in this matter primarily as Molly Carpenter, mortal woman?
Giving a gift to the Lady of Summer becomes one of those things that mortals sometimes do if they like you. Offering to exorcise a bunch of people of Nemesis influence becomes a personal favor, not a nationstate one.

And its easier, or at least, more face-saving, for Titania to accept help as coming with no strings

The Queen of Sanctuary OTOH? Is a major political entity, or soon will be.
And her trying to give a magic item to the Lady of Summer is a matter where an external power is interfering in the internal political matters of Summer.

That becomes Major Politics, and makes it much harder to get Lily's splendor to her without adverse repercussions for us or for her.

Showing up in jeans and a t-shirt would be okay, but if so it sounds like sprinkling a bunch of little signifiers around a seemingly-mortal outfit would probably play even better with them.

We're dealing with some topics here that aren't exactly lightweight. Spontaneity is all well and good, we should at least attempt to observe what they consider good manners in their city, but I'm not sure the mask of a mortal teenager poking nemesis and the summer court because of it is a good look either.

So are you listening? Because, and I quote:
"They use the feathers peacocks and all sorts of birds as well," the Archive continues, her tone still didactic, only the sparkle in her eye giving away the fun she's having. "The demimode of the Seelie has a love of codes and cypher, secret messages and hidden assignations to match the Sun King's court er... The Archive basically is suggesting that we do the opposite of what your vote is saying.

Seriously, I cant imagine how you look at a situation where our goals are
1) Inform Titania about the Nemesis-touched without her thinking we have ulterior motives
2) Get Titania to accept help with the Nemesis-infected
2) Deliver Lily's Splendor without making Titania paranoid or feel threatened

And then decide that the best way of doing this is going Maximum Pomp and Self-Aggrandizement(TM).
Presenting ourself as a Queen interfering in another Queen's Court/Nation seems like literally the last thing we should want to do if we want said Queen to take our suggestions.

Showing up in jeans and a t-shirt would be okay, but if so it sounds like sprinkling a bunch of little signifiers around a seemingly-mortal outfit would probably play even better with them.
Small signifiers are probably fine.
Thing is Molly doesnt really have many of those. Certainly none that are recognized in the supernatural community; she hasnt been about long enough for it to be an issue.

And a bunch of the ones we have, like ice and shadow, are associated with Winter or Yomi Wan. Which is, at best, a faux pas.

You have to remember what our other goals here are, and that Titania has been described to us as emotional at the best of times. The less we present ourselves overtly as a potential threat, the more likely she is to listen to us telling her how to run her Court, or at least thats how some people will see it.
