Starship Design Bureau

It appears that the sole difference between Triangular and Ovoid is that Ovoid will have better sensors, possibly at the cost of some space. We makin' a science ship, let's do some science.

[X] Ovoid Hull

You eventually decide that the integrated sensor pallets are too attractive an option to leave on the table for a science vessel. The resulting lines are quite smooth, providing plenty of surface area for phasers and some kind of custom installation on the flattened ventral hull.

The secondary hull comes next. The first option is to continue with the ovoid theme, using an ultra-wide deflector for maximum warp performance. Smoothing the back of the saucer section into the secondary hull would require moving the impulse engines to the far aft, however, and while off-axis thrusters would solve manoeuvrability it would never have the powerful acceleration of other starships. All told the design would be quite compact.

The second option is to use a more traditionally sharp divide between the primary and secondary hulls on the aft facing. This would allow you to mount an impulse engine dead-center, although a smaller deflector would require a more powerful model to compensate or be taken as a necessary tradeoff. Increasing the length of the engineering hull would also provide more internal space.

Well, it is a science ship, and there's not a lot of things this ship should need to run away from in sublight, so I don't think having the emergency acceleration matters nearly as much here compared to the supra-light performance offered by the Big Damn Deflector Dish. Internal space is useful, of course, but being able to respond in a timely fashion to anomalies via the warp and carry out sustained operations through efficient warp engines gives better fundamentals we can't compensate for with internal space.

[X] Ovoid Secondary Hull

The Ovoid Secondary Hull is basically the canonical option, as far as I can see. It would be fun to go with something different here, however, both as an exploration vessel, and given the situation Voyager finds herself in... I think we want to maximise the ship's cruising speed at warp.

[X] Ovoid Secondary Hull

It may well be that we end up with a form factor basically identical to that on the canonical Voyager simply because it turns out that this represents the technological optimum for making an efficient fast warp cruiser at this tonnage.

[X] Lengthened Secondary Hull
i would prefer the increase in internal space for more rooms for crew and computers so that if they get trapped for longer than in canon they would have the space needed if some famlies get started on the ship
