Starship Design Bureau

The last is for a rapid-response tactical cruiser with some form of innovative firepower multiplier like saucer separation.

Urgh. I cannot believe seperating a part of a ship from your main reactor core is ever going to be an "innovative firepower multiplier". Sounds like a boondoggle to me. If Starfleet wants multi-vector attack capabilities from a single starship they should build a carrier.

[X] A Tactical Cruiser (Project Prometheus)

This one sounds the most interesting. I vote we have the ship be capable of turning into a giant robot with a sword!

[X] A Long-Range Science Ship (Project Intrepid)

Makes no sense, but I want to do a science ship.

If we do do the tactical one… let's go for something less silly than a detachable saucer section.

We have just done a major combat ship, I would like to look at a not-combat ship.

WAR SHIPS come one no boring unneeded science or diplomatic stuff. Just firepower speed and armor!

Might be interesting to steal a page from Honor Harrington and develop detached single-use multi-shot photon torpedo launcher pods for an alpha strike.

We haven't done a science ship yet, I'm interested in seeing what we can squeeze in one.

Hmmm, interesting.

The canon Akira seems to be a seriously solid combatant as well as a good general-purpose starship, and I think we could manage to hit that bar and maybe exceed it a little. It's the obvious safe option and is similar to the other projects we've chosen. The Intrepid program produced Voyager, a thoroughly excellent ship essentially capable of performing the explorer role in a smaller package. It would be neat to do that one given that it's our first chance to design a "protagonist" ship, and we could try and help them to be even better-equipped to help survive in the Delta Quadrant. That being said, the canon Intrepid seems very capable to begin with. We've also got recent practice building an oval saucer. On balance I think I'll vote Intrepid.

The Prometheus... is honestly sort of insane, the project appears to have produced a prototype that was capable of fighting an entire Romulan task force by itself. Not even in a "plucky ship against desperate odds" sort of way, those D'deridex class cruisers were getting trained. Absolutely rained on, like a plucky of teens from an 80s movie who decided to get into the ring and try to fight 90s Mike Tyson after he was told they had personally shot one of his tigers. It was like watching squirrels being thrown to a wolverine on bath salts.

When Starfleet sent a task group including two Defiant class ships to go and chase it down, they fared a little better, but the Prometheus still got the better of the engagement. So honestly I would suggest we leave the Prometheus alone, because the only way I can explain it is that they took every possible prototype and then lucked out so hard on the prototyping rolls that the twelve Olympians manifested in Beta Antares Shipyards and helped to forge the ship from the divine sky-iron of the gods. We probably can't realistically beat that level of performance, and altering the timeline will just make a worse ship.

Seriously, the canon Prometheus could arguably handle a Borg Sphere by itself, it's just absurd. Cruel and unusual. The Hobus supernova was actually the result of the sheer psychic backlash and impotent rage when the Romulan Senate learnt that Starfleet was planning an initial run of twelve vessels.

We cannot possibly top that level of performance, so... let's leave it well alone.

We got our win, take that borg.

Now, for a fancy science ship. 🥳

i don't want to do another war ship just yet and the prometheus project just doesn't seem to make sense to me with how we are spliting the ship in two, with the main saucer section being separated from the main reactor. it makes absolutly no sense in how that would make a better combat ship.
it would have better use in an emergency when one of the sections is too damaged and spliting them would save the remaining crew.

The only possible interpretation I have of the Prometheus is that it was designed to basically be three Defiant-grade heavy frigates stapled together to a high-performance warp chassis. It goes very fast with a brute force warp core (which is huge because it has to safely split into three warp cores (?!) and then splits apart into three low-endurance but very shooty hulls. It might also be because it's got Type-12 phasers like the Sovereign, but still. The only flaw I really see with the idea is what do you do if the middle of the sandwich gets destroyed. Can the top and bottom hulls reconnect without it?

But yeah it's just...such a weird ship.

Let's build the most capable science vessel in the entire Federation.

[X] A Long-Range Science Ship (Project Intrepid)

Our little scrappy ship isn't on completed designs yet, but I would love to see how many more they made to replace losses and boost defenses
I'm really want to build a non-violent focused ship just because it's something different
