Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

So, for the Style he definitly would have to awaken his Chi, like a Shi.

Isn't that a matter of years?
We can skip that because of the Essence-generatir nailed to our soul, he has no such advantage.

It depends, for most people it's a matter of years, for someone who is talented in learning martial arts and and with a grounding in the needed skill, which Daniel is it might happen in a matter of months.

If, in theory, we awakened the P'o of someone who can already use his Chi for Martial Arts, could he use his P'o as an additional battery to that?

Yes, it would just mean they have deeper resources because they are in tune with all of themselves, even the parts that are obsessive and impulsive, reckless and selfish. The Po is the shadow self, not necessarily evil but very ill suited to any kind of social existence, that is why it is not in charge for actual living people and why the Jade Court build entire paths of enlightenment around controlling it.

Orrr you can just make a deal with various forms of demons, technically including the Infernal Exalted.

[X] Learning the Fivefold Howling Style in the City of Law, it is grueling training and not without its dangers, but far less so than what he planned going out and getting into fights with monsters
- [X] You do have a certain prize sword he could use if he does well enough.

I still think we should've talked him out of it. If keeping him safe is actually a priority of ours we wouldn't be allowing him to train with the intent of fighting monsters down the line and giving up his Angelic protection in the first place. Its counter productive and I do think people just voted for the more narratively interesting option rather than the most logical one.

I'd rather not waste more time on this than required when we have stronger more experienced assets to invest in.

I'm gonna note the angelic protections only at home at best they nudge luck outside of it and it doesn't protect against mortal action almost at all.

True but still less dangerous overall. We were planning on making extra protections to account for the bits Angelic protection doesn't cover.

We still have to do that btw. For the rest of the family if nothing else.

To be fair, some Po souls are very suited to operating socially. They're just generally dicks. They can be very socially effective dicks though. There's nothing stopping the right Po being charismatic and having long term plans to manipulate their other half and the people around them.

That's part of what makes them dangerous. A person under control of their Po can be no less socially capable or intelligent than when their Hun is dominant. They're obsessive, not stupid.

So politician souls? That's what po is short for?

Also next Purchasing turn we need to get Inner Devils Unchained to awaken people's po souls. This not only unlocks MA from Molly's world for them but also Demon Arts, IIRC.

I still want night swallows secrets. I see it as practically inevitable that if Rosie isn't defused or kept from learning what we did we will end up dealing with her as a nemesis agent or denarian.

This is a bit more complex and bear with me a bit since I am going to try to synthesize WoD and Exalted Lore. The Po soul is the lower soul, the one that normally (in so far as ghosts are normal) makes a Hungry Ghost and Hungry Ghosts are not known for their ability to reason or plan or do anything but fill themselves as an animal seeks to sate its hunger. Running the gauntlet of Yomi does something to the Wan Kuei's Po soul, makes it reach beyond itself, learn how to problem solve, learn how to think long term, learn how to act with purpose. In doing so they prove themsleves inheritors of the Wan Xian of old for good or for ill and so the Po passes back into the world of the living and reunites with its Han or higher soul, the proper seat of reason. Of course this soul has not been though actual literal hell so for the most part it is unable to pull the breaks on this newly empowered Po unless it is taught how to do so and then by the long slow path of enlightenment it too reaches beyond itself.

Otherwise the shadow-soul, the Po takes the context of how the living world is supposed to work like, the lay of the land, the places to find Chi to glut itself on and proceeds to do just that, to act as though it were in Yomi where demons and the damned torture and devour each other for the pleasure of the Kings or simply to externalize their pain. The Po cannot be a productive member of society because it is stuck in that state, it is a thing of that realm. The Wan Kuei bring hell out with them.

This means that even beyond the availability of Mercy in Servitude a Po Molly awakens is not going to produce a being that is like a Chi Mei or a Wan Kuei in Shadow Soul by default since instead of the Po being kicked awake screaming it has been lifted up. Granted it has been lifted up by something of immense and inhuman darkness so all they can learn is the Demon Arts, but hey on the other hand they get to eat breathe and all those other fun things the living do.

You know what? It's not quite midnight yet. That is a good time to write, right?

Arc 10 Post 11: The Roots of Command
The Roots of Command

3rd of December 2006 A.D.

As soon as you draw the black steel sword Daniel's eyes go wide. It's not the Sword and it's not your sword, on account of that being performing the task of information gatherer and general intermediary, but it is just as clearly a weapon of power, more than a tool of war, a thing with its own history and tales to tell. Oh yes, you know well the look in your brother's eyes from all the times you had seen it looking back out of the mirror. Still understanding does not mean letting him off easy: "Once you finish your training if this is appropriate to your style you can use this," You shrug with deliberate nonchalance. "Plus if I give it to you now you wouldn't be able to do this..." A wedge of air forged into a blade screams across the sale to shatter one of the practice targets. "Be a real waste."

Olivia at least hides her amusement behind her hand, Lydia does no such thing, though Daniel's surly expression turns around abruptly when his girlfriend hugs him around the shoulder and whispers into his ear. "I'm sure you will do great."

That theory is put to the test that evening, or what would be evening back home. The closest thing to a day in the Five Cities is the shift, which Olivia had first taken to mean 'work shift' and been understandably upset by, though in the full meaning is a shift in one's self. It is broadly taught not just by the Covenant, but as part of most common philosophies of the world that the 'one who labors' is apart from 'the one who sleeps ' who is apart from 'the one who prays' and so on. Fifty two modalities of life are recognized most everywhere, with maybe a dozen more having local acceptance. Most people of course do not spend the equivalent of eight hours and twenty minutes only engaged in commerce or entirely dedicated to ritual bating to open new endeavors.

But there is one exception. In the City of Law among towers buttressed like fortresses and tunnels still doubling as shelter was born a tradition which some sorcerers disdain to count among themselves, though not in hearing of its practitioners. the Five-fold Hollowing Style. Many an ancient battles had been won and lost upon the fulcrum of this ancient art and while the Wars of Unification are a thing of the past the use of such empowered warriors has never slacked, mostly in dealing with the tribes of the Forest and the Wastes, their powers impervious for it is born from within, of understanding one's self and one's place in the world...

"They are the same are they not?" Usum asks as you step onto the platform from the small inner city train. "All born of the same essence, in some small way all capable of embodying it."

"Not embody, follow in the footsteps," you correct him

The conversation is cut short by a man grey skinned with eyes black as drops of tar and garbed in armor of brass bows to you so deeply his bald head almost touches the floor. "I am honored to be of service to you and to your kin Majesty, I am Integrity Thrice Sworn. it would be an honor to offer my services to you and those who follow you."

Daniel straightens up instinctively at the tone, not that he was slouched before, but now one could use his spine as s plumb bob. "Sir I am ready, eager to learn."

Turns out the first step on the road to learning martial arts is not a punch nor a kick, not even a headbut, it is mediation upon bonds of fellowship to harden the officer's resolve based upon the bonds of fellowship and duty.

You lay a hand on Daniel's shoulder. "I had to learn how to brew tea."

By the time you get home that night your brother is more relaxed than you had seen him in a while, the tension invisible until it was gone. Now at last he has a way forward that isn't a gamble in the dark.

What next?

OOC: Not the most inspired vote, but it is late and this was a good stopping point narratively

This is going to be an arc almost completely happening inside our Courts, isn't it? I am more than ok with this. Also, we should come back with brother Divsimar and learn some martial arts ourselves.

And with the talk about shifts, my estimation of the chances of us finding some sodalites to help work on Lash's vessel increases from one in a million to one in a thousand. At least.

[X] Lydia speaking to the priests of the City of Endings about Death in the Beyond

Some thoughts:
1) The more I learn about the Courts, the more I think that we would make great allies with Winter. Our people think in the same timespans as Winter does, and we can sell Winter equipment / weapons, in exchange for Winter's resources (if our realm lacks any), and alliances.
2) So, if we are getting Olivia as a sniper long range support spy assassin (also, I was right, she's going to be a hit among intelligence community), and Daniel as a meat shield close combat specialist, what other circle mates do we need?
3) @DragonParadox does Shadowrun the RPG game exist in Dresdenverse? Because if so, we should buy it. As in, the franchise. And maybe start doing some revising to make it more ln line with the courts. Do a little bit of propaganda, as it was.

Iirc from reading the wiki Daniel did end up joining the military in the original timeline. So getting a drill sergeant as a teacher is probably both fitting and good for him. He seemed to have calmed down a bit from it.

Daniel is not a circle mate and won't be.
Just keep in mind that a few enhancements and a martial art won't make him capable of surviving between a Naagloshii, an ancient Rampire and a dozen less ancient ones.

Seconded!

We could save the franchise from the 5th and 6th editions. Some money to hire consistent writers and we could have a real gem. Once everything is on the right track, we could even introduce a version of the FCF as a Metaplane or, if we tie in Earthdawn as well, a Netherworld.
