Cardassian Ship – Durable, uncomfortable, close, cramped and cheap. Thinks creature comforts are for other people and technical sophistication is for people who haven't spent decades starving to death. The fact that the starving could have been avoided if the government were less...you know, monstrous doesn't seem to have occurred to that many of them.

Okampan Crew – the crew are bright, perky, cheerful, and incredibly psychically powerful. Individually, they're all better than Vulcans, and as a gestalt? Who knows!

[X] Give a fuller introduction - you're Jenny, local ultrazoner, and uh, you were just heading home after a long day. But, maybe you'd like to get some drinks?

[X] Get spooked by a second someone, who you swear wasn't there a moment ago.

Val Jean is going to look Aragorn when we first see him as Strider in the back of that pub.
Wrapped in a cloak, hood up, full shadow. But then he pulls the hood back and he's tall, dark, and "oh my".

I swear, the good old MRSS-24601 hasn't had enough screen time this season

That only raises further questions--like, where's the brain? Have we had a ship-AI this whole time and it never came up? Has our subspace signature become sapient? Does every ship in the Cobolt-verse have a ship spirit we now need to worry about? How much incense does Engineering need?

Literally every single main-character starship or starbase in the show (not movie) post-Federation-formation canon has had an AI at some point.

NCC-1701-no-bloody-A-B-C-D-E-F-or-J had two, if we don't call one unstable computer scientist imprinting his own brain "cheating". Apparently, a Constitution-class starship is a prankster with no sense of safe boundaries! (Yes, I consider TAS canon, though some episodes very much only in a "low budget holodrama of actual events" or "from a certain point of view" sort of way.)

NCC-1701-D even had a child!

DS9 had that probe AI that got put in a "doghouse" and never, ever mentioned again in the Prime timeline, and only once or twice in the First Splinter.

And now, clearly, Voyager has more than just the Doctor. :)

"A young...I'm six thousand years old, Albert!" Jenny practically wailed.

"Six thousand? I'm near five million myself! Six thousand. Harrumph!" Albert harrumphed. "Really now, Jennifer-"

"But you're supposed to live for almost ninety million years. I've only got, what, a million? A million and a half?

...So, I recognize that this is being blown massively out of proportion after it was used as an excuse to break up with her...

But even looking entirely at proportions instead of absolute numbers, she's one 1/165 into the lower limit of her projected lifespan, while he's 1/18 into it. Yes, he's clearly being treated as older and more experienced, but the relevant point is just how small the fraction of her life she's actually lived is. Those kinds of inhumanly long lifespans can justify being independent for a larger fraction of their total life, and thus starting to do things on their own to prepare for that despite having lived a smaller fraction of that lifespan than a human would, but even starting to give them supervised unguided projects to learn from seems outright cruel prior to the first tenth of their life. Like, even assuming the infancy equivalent passes relatively quickly so they spend most of their time able to internalize lessons from what's around them, that's still the equivalent of 7 IRL, and well, 28 in Federation humans in this universe, which maybe slightly undercuts my original numbers when you realize many humans won't want to wait that long to start taking care of themselves, but one tenth of that is ridiculous and kind of fucked up.

Revoting because this is great

Yes good

"But you're supposed to live for almost ninety million years. I've only got, what, a million? A million and a half? And I've only, what? Done one measly little uplift. I can't even span properly, I'm six thousand years old and I...and I...and I..." Her voice hitched. "I-I can't even branchiaaaaaaaaaate!" She put her hands over her face and started to sob openly.

Now that sounds familiar...

Another way to look at it is how old she is compared to how long it takes to learn everything you're expected to know as an adult. If it takes a thousand years, she's well beyond that; if it takes 5000 years, she's only a little past.

Or how old she is compared to the age when people in her society normally get assigned a full range of responsibilities.

Or how far past "physical" maturity she is.

Thinking on it more, VoyaJean is very much an enemies to lovers ship, but whether it's a basic enemies to lovers or a Catradora-style almost-lovers to enemies to lovers arc depends on whether their personalities are more informed by the ship (Cardassian!Val Jean) or the crew (Maquis!Val Jean). So this should be very informative about the metaphysics of this whole thing.

I dunno, it could be less "enemies to lovers", and more "genuinely nothing personal, both actually really respect each others' reasons but entangled by circumstances" to "freed of circumstances and having time to connect and fall in love" sort of thing?

(Forget canon ground, we're so far up in crackship!space we're literally on the other side of the galaxy!)

...What the hay.
Well, uh. Huh. So, this appears to be happening. Whatever it is. :D

Hmm.

[X] Ask Voyager where she's from!

NotInventedHere said:
He... presumably didn't come to the stranded Delta-Quadrant ship that's going to take decades to get home.
I thought he did, and that was what that bit about promotion was about?

DragonCobolt said:
He's on Voy! It's fine. don't worry about it.
Ah, and confirmed, thanks.
...But, uh. I wasn't worried about it before, but you saying that has me kind of wondering if I've missed something and in fact should be. :D

@Spart117MC:
Oh, good idea.

[X] Get spooked by a second someone, who you swear wasn't there a moment ago.

Of course, does the cloaking device work on Jennifer? No, probably not. Distracted By Pretty Lady, on the other hand... :D

The personalities are the actions and inactions of the crew, just anthropomorphizing the ship as a whole instead of a collection of tiny entities.

Which makes your whole metaphor even more complex.

Cardassian!Val Jean was killed, replaced with Macquis!Val Jean in her dark backstory.
Then, during the incident, both Voy and Val were seriously wounded, with Val sacrificing herself to save Voy.
That leads to a brief reassertion of the deceased Cardassian Val, buth with an esoteric ritual seeing herself come back to life in her new, Okampan form.

It's Theseus shipping, really/
