Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest)

You know what, that's fair. In the end, one can make an argument for any of the options, and you yourself have successfully argued that all of the options are the villainous option.

Oh Kaoru, you are very sketchy right now but also a very good potential scapegoat if you keep this up. After all, two people sneaking around a darkened stairway to the basement is suspicious but three people? Well, it's still suspicious but three's a crowd!

[X] KAORU: COVER IT UP
I think it would be great if Zaiyu could investigate on his own because I'm fairly sure Kaoru won't hurt Kyoto or anything right now. And if he's planning to, he has more opportunities when she goes to school anyway rather than this isolated dark space... hm.
[X] INVESTIGATE THE BRAINWASHING
Brainwashed humans aren't really on our priority list to be honest, but the emergence of another magic-using faction? Shayin will definitely want to hear about this.

At the very least, "these crazy kids are trying to find a secluded makeout spot" won't be the first thing people think when they see us. At worst, it'll be third or fourth.

Right, forgot Kyoko acts as a distraction.

@SillyLittleCoffe can't we just make an illusion of his eyes being like the mind controlled people to knock him out while having a convincing excuse for Kyoko? This dude totally cramping Zaiyu's style and barging in one his one on one time with Kyoko.

"For sure," you agree. "Where did you get them?"

"Why, you want a pair?"

"Yes. I have a roommate who'd enjoy them."

She giggles. "Let me guess, your roommate is very fuzzy and has cute little ears?"

You all overthinking stealing her ribbon. All we really need to do is buy a normal one and find some way to swap them down the lines. Rose told us where she got the ribbon from, if I recall correctly, so unless the ribbon has some sort of symbolic meaning to her, it should be fine to just swap with a normal one.
She never told us where she got the ribbon. We could craft a new one, especially since we have a photographic memory, but even if it's the same, stealing it would still be Evil. In fact, it would be Deviously Evil, since we're tricking her.
I, for one, wouldn't be happy if someone made a copy of one of my plushies and swapped it out for the original.
It's like when parents change the dead goldfish.

You know, you're the third person I've seen this week who messed up their arm. Is something happening?"
Wait. There's the Yuu disguise and now the Kai disguise, but who's the third one ?
Eh, probably just some student.
Hopefully.

I have a hunch the darkroom is where this week's villain is, because of the particularly intricate spell on Adminstartor Honda is. They clearly value that place quite a bit. Meanwhile, the basement is home to a trap/the villain's backup/secondary plan.

If we're playing this from a non-villainous perspective, wouldn't it be more selfish (and in line with our villainous mission) to investigate the perpetrators than to try and mitigate the harm they caused?
Eh, I think it would be more strategic to try to stop the problem at its source, for which we need to understand what's happening. And, I mean, they're not doing anything harmful right now as far as we can see. - But this kind of being-strategic-and-rational is also very villain coded, so it works out.

If he's in here and not hypnotized, he's either just arrived, magical, or involved with the cause.

2/3 scenarios says reading him in is a bad plan.
1/3 says it'd be fun tho

Hear ye, hear ye, brace yourselves for a long react post!

Kyoko looks up at you with enormous reflective eyes. The hope in them is as fragile as it is breathtaking. "You… believe me?"

You nod without hesitation.

She stares at you for a moment, then scrubs at her face with her sleeve.
KYOKO YOU SWEET CHILD

She needs so many hugs.

She's so tiny she fits right in front of you. Your chin is practically resting on top of her head. If need be, you could pick her up and flee.
I'm so here for her friendship with Zaiyu. It's so cute and she deserves the world (but a friend unequivocally in her corner that doesn't treat her like a broken thing is a good start).

This sounds reasonable. Fear of authority figures does tend to be difficult to erase or overcome, even with hypnosis.
AAAAAAAND a nice, cheerful reminder that Zaiyu's from a dystopian society in a death spiral. That was jarring in the best way.

The sound of a door opening behind you cuts you off. You react immediately, tugging Kyoko back into the seating area. Now the two of you look like two kids loitering in a lobby and messing around with the chairs. You're betting that pretending not to be in trouble is a habit that crosses species boundaries.
I'm currently the guy in the 'Oustanding move!' chess meme. That was actually a really smart and intuitive reaction under pressure. Go Zaiyu.

Kyoko forces a smile. Well, you say 'forced', but it looks very natural. How much time has she spent faking smiles? If you didn't know how stressed and concerned she is right now, you'd think she was genuinely happy to see this person.
Zaiyu is concerned for his friend's sad background. Good lad. Also

Someone on this planet is at least as skilled a mage as you are.

No. In the field of mind magic, at least, they're better.
CONCERN.

"Yeah. I froze up… I should've asked her if she could help."

"It's best you didn't," you tell her. "Administrator Honda is definitely hypnotized, too."

Kyoko's lip trembles. Then she squeezes her shut and breathes deeply for a minute. "How do you know?"

You're a magical alien who knows magic when he sees it, that's how. But you probably shouldn't tell her that. "It's the eyes," you say instead. "There's a haze over them. Like something else is being reflected."

She swallows hard. "Okay. I'll believe you."

That's very nice of her.
You know, I think there's a few more layers to this exchange than is first apparent. Kyoko cares deeply about 'Kai' because he treats her like a human being and extends her trust. And later in the update she seemed to have a thing where she just assumes someone's going to blame her for things. So I think her lip trembles because she was told that her 'messing up' is totally fine not because the administrator is also hypnotised but it's abundantly clear that Zaiyu/Kai genuinely does not care that she 'messed up.'

Given the hints of what her life's been like during her formative years up till now... I'd find that pretty moving in her shoes. A new friend that you get really attached to fast because they see you for you not only trusts you without even seeming to question whether your worthy of it and then is not the slightest bit bothered when you 'fail' in front of them... I wonder how long it's been since Kyoko had someone treat her like that? The girl's starving for a bit of compassion. And whatever else you can say about Zaiyu - his ego, his obliviousness, his impulsiveness... he's actually impressively compassionate for an isolated Starspite apprentice who was always on the move, never put down roots, and comes from a dystopian society in a death spiral. I don't think Zaiyu remotely realises how much it means to Kyoko that he's treating her compassion, respect and dignity and doesn't even seem to question whether that's the right thing to do. Good. She deserves nice things.

Also, damn, I'm impressed with how much you managed to pack into that SillyLittleCoffe.

"Yes," Kyoko breathes, looking stricken. Did she get hurt somewhere along the trip? Or is it purely emotional distress?

You hope it's not purely emotional distress. You are so not qualified to deal with that.

Eventually, you clap her on the shoulder without the cast and say, "Then let's go."
Zaiyu: 'I am not qualified to deal with emotional distress.'
Also Zaiyu: 'Immediately removes his friend from the environment causing her distress without making her feel self-conscious about it, at all.'
As I said above, a surprising amount of compassion, given his origins.

She's warm. Not as warm as an Estil would be, but there's something nice about feeling unshielded heat radiate through your environmental barriers. And another Estil wouldn't have dropped their own defences to touch you. The staticky feeling of two environmental barriers overlapping annoys you.
THEY'RE HOLDING HANDS????!!!! Also, Zaiyu is discovering he's touch-starved, can't say I'm surprised. But it's adorable. I can't wait for him to remain a great friend to Kyoko and nothing bad to ever happen.

"That's the basement. Why are they going into the basement?"

You don't know what a basement is. "What's down there?"

"Nothing. Well, maintenance stuff, I guess. Spare equipment, spare beds. Maybe the morgue…" Her voice trails off.

You don't know what a morgue is, either, but her tone suggests it's nothing good. "Does the stuff in there have any connection to the darkroom?"

She starts to shake her head, then stops. Her eyes sparkle.
Okay so the counterpoint here is both hysterical and adorable. You have Kyoko being terrified that people are being taken down into the morgue and getting murdered meanwhile Zaiyu is just standing there going 'I don't know these fancy words' and, of course, doesn't admit it. BUT! He accidentally gives Kyoko the idea that, no, people aren't getting murdered, they might be after something a lot more mundane and she perks up. Also Zaiyu's still paying close attention to his buddy's emotional state. Good lad.

I've said it before, I'm saying it now and I'm sure I'll be saying it again but I love the culture mismatch from Zaiyu's head to earth things. It's a source of humour, drama and just straight up very sweet moments. Just like when Zaiyu went to Rose 'but wouldn't it all be solved if all three of them got together?'

After a minute, she turns back to you with a soft smile. "I just remembered something."

You tilt your head and wait for her to continue. You've found the final area of interest in the hospital, so you can afford to take a minute.

"Before I forget, thank you for this, Kai. It made me really happy to see you again."

What the hell, that's so cute. Like Rins but soft. You want to pat her on the head. You probably would, except that as soon as those words are out, you hear them.
BAITED! UNFAIRLY BAITED BY THE AUTHOR! THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY!
These kids are adorable. Get them friends/companions who they can actually trust and they start to blossom.

At the same time, you have no idea how someone managed to sneak up on you so easily.
SUS. Maybe he was just lost in the cute moment tho...

He inclines his head. "Hello there. Have you been looking after Kyoko?"

"It's more like she's been looking after me." She actually knows how a hospital is supposed to work, after all.
Hell yeah! Talk up one of your new besties, Zaiyu! She deserves it! I love how his blunt honesty means that he just flat out states compliments that are absolutely great to here for someone with low self-esteem like Kyoko.

Kaoru chuckles. "She does seem like the reliable type. Or maybe you're the one who's unreliable? Just kidding."
RUDE!

"Really? Are broken arms contagious or something?"

"I hope not. But seriously, if this keeps happening, I'll have to make a note of it. Injured students need accommodations. And if there's an infrastructural cause, I might be able to stop the problem at its source."

"It's not like that," Kyoko says hastily, raising her mobile hand. "I just fell. I promise I wasn't trying to cause problems for anyone."

Kaoru blinks at her. "I didn't think you were?"

"O-oh."
Okay so, firstly, I'm giggling Zaiyu's question about contagious broken arms is probably legit. It makes perfect sense! After all, he's just discovered a peer mage on earth somewhere and also knows that he doesn't know how Earth works. Maybe broken arms are contagious here. As for Kaoru, well they're still sus but that's a pretty solid and above board reasoning to look into things. Also woo more people who don't instantly jump on the 'flaws' that Kyoko sees in herself all the time.

As for voting?
[X] KAORU: READ HIM IN
Like hell am I leaving Kyoko alone with a stranger who's sus in the middle of an localised epidemic of mental coercion. Either they have good intentions in which case we're fine reading them in because people being so in sync is really weird to any mundane human... or if they have bad intentions then we're there to back up our bestie.

[X] INVESTIGATE THE BRAINWASHING
I feel like this is not only the thing Zaiyu would be most worried about (a mage nearby who's superior to him in mind magic? NOT GOOD!); but also the most in character for the concerns of our human buddies (if Kaoru's above board anyway).

[X] KAORU: READ HIM IN
I'm up to gamble here. Mostly ambivalent wrt what location to poke, but leaning towards

[X] INVESTIGATE THE BASEMENT

Zaiyu, not knowing what a morgue is for: "Hey fellow human kids. Wanna see what goes on in a 'mourge'?"

He nudges his head against your hand until you risk petting him.

His hair is very soft. You could get used to this.

What the hell, that's so cute. Like Rins but soft. You want to pat her on the head.
It has been decided.
The hospital shall be our future Earth base, since it's clearly the best place to find cute people for headpats.

How exactly would the average Estil view the humans? Another race? Culture? animals what?

I'm asking just cause I want to know what the Estil as a whole would think of the Earth situation.

I think it depends.
The plan for Earth, where the planet is terraformed to Estil preferences and the human population is deported, is one that's likely to have a lot of casualties.
It's likely that the higher-ups of the Estil fleet have a very, very low opinion of humans, considering they think nothing of slaughtering them.
Lady Starspite likely sees humans as nothing more than pests.

That said, most Estil commoners probably don't even know there's a sentient species on Earth right now. Estil leadership is clearly not shy about restricting information (for example, Rins and Mitl don't know about the mana eaters), and while they probably know about Earth (Zaiyu mentions pictures of Earth in his textbooks), it's likely that to the average Estil, Earth is similar to Mithos; it's a mythological place with no bearing on their day-to-day life. Remember Rins mistaking Antarctica for clouds ?

There also doesn't seem to be actual propaganda movements aimed against humans; Zaiyu was probably given a speech or two by Lady Starspite and that was it.

Considering the implied political drama and the amount of care the Estil oligarchs have for the majority of the population, it's a safe bet that the mission to Earth isn't exactly advertised, too.

Most Estil commoners will probably sympathise with humans should they spend a length of time with each other, or even learn that humans exist and are sentient/capable of empathy.
Edit: wait, a major part of fleet life is apparently laughing at your companions's mishaps. I hope that's thaumaforger-specific though.

Also, Sasori clearly has the Creepy aesthetic mentioned in character creation, what with the chitin and horns and shark teeth. That means the Titan has the Knightly aesthetic.

This is the same update where Zaiyu succeeded on two consecutive magic perception rolls. I think he's just having a good day.

I feel like this is not only the thing Zaiyu would be most worried about (a mage nearby who's superior to him in mind magic? NOT GOOD!)
I know you probably mean "This mage is a threat to everything Zaiyu won't admit he cares about and probably also the mission," but it sounds more like "Zaiyu's ego is bruised by human mages being better than him".

It also means any heroes who discover our base can't just rush in and start destroying everything, because of the sheer public backlash of attacking the hospital.
That is a good argument to make to Shayin (to hide the fact that we want to hang out with Kyoko and maybe find more pattable heads).
