Always thought the emperor crippled the empire when he left control of technology with the Mechanicus.

The risk we take is calculated.

Time to see how bad we are at math :p (Sorry I couldn't resist such a perfect set up)

On the off chance that we somehow managed to get that golden 20%. It's worth a shot I guess.

We don't always have to risk to have everything we want, sometimes is good to play it safe

Hearing out both the side arguing that they don't want to be genocided and the side arguing that it's colonial expansion time might end up a diplomatic triumph but its got a 3 in 5 chance of upsetting, to some degree, the guys who just don't want to be murdered. The eldar will be living on a beautiful bountiful maiden world crafted by the eldar millenia ago and instead of colonising a less valuable world nearby the Mechanicus want to steal it and exploit the shit out of it.

I have a thought: The mechanicus agree to not murder pillage the planet, and the Eldar have to stop threatening genocide every time they talk to us.

Maybe don't genocide the people who want to live peacefully?

Guys, I really don't want to roll the dice in the situation, especially since the Mechanicus is decidedly in the wrong here (for wanting to exterminate the inhabitants) and I don't think it's worth it to try and find a peaceful solution with genocidal theocrats especially as we might risk alienating both of them.

I don't see why we shouldn't try to fix things peacefully, especially when we are more likely than not to succeed.

In 3 out of the 5 possibilities listed in that option, we have the chance to incur a penalty towards the eldar whom we've been trying to improve our relations with for several rounds now all for an empire that we just met whose first major action towards us is to try an exterminate a planet inhabited by our allies. There is a time for diplomatic overtures, but this is not it.

I don't want to try and 'fix things peacefully' with people who have an explicit goal of commiting genocide. It's also mechanically quite bad:

20% chance of major penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations - Worst of both worlds but extra bad.
20% chance of minor penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations - Worst of both worlds.
20% chance of major penalty to Mechanicus relations & minor bonus to Eldar relations - Equivalent to siding with Eldar.
20% chance of minor bonus to Mechanicus relations & major penalty to Eldar relations - Equivalent to siding with Mechanicus.
20% of minor bonus to both Mechanicus Eldar relations - Best of both worlds.

Only a 20% chance of getting the best outcome, versus 40-60% of getting equivalent outcomes and 20-40% of getting a worse outcome, of which one of them involves supporting people who want to literally commit genocide.

False, 20% of failing outright, 20% of annoying them and succeeding or failing but not angering them, 40% of putting our foot down and angering one, and 20% of outright success. We can always improve relations later.

Stopping this war is worth some relation loss, and it would provide precedent for Mechanicus worlds not going full genocidal which will make interactions with future Mechanicus and convincing them easier. Unless you want to fight most Mechanicus Worlds we come across for the foreseeable future when we could be doing other things then I see no reason to not try.

Please explain to me as to how a 'minor penalty to relations' is not angering poeople.

If we want a precedent for the Mechanicus not going full genocidal siding with the Eldar is the obvious option here. That has 100% chance of the Mechanicus not being able to commit genocide.

The 'try and resolve things peacefully' has a 40% chance of us making the Eldar rightfully disgusted at us. Or in one sentence:

"What the actual fuck you want us to make nice with the people who want to murder and enslave us all?"

Mechanicus is a powerful faction. We shouldn't compromise our morals, but if we can shoot for an off-chance of successful resolution without pissing them off, I think let's do it.
