Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

The example you gave us Molly being locked up and you are really overestimating the information gathering abilities of the supernatural factions of DF as well as how willing they are to share information with each other.
Mab canonically demonstrated the ability to perform realtime cross-Gauntlet magical surveillance in Small Favor, as she showed Dresden footage of Marcone running from attack.
Odin as Santa Claus reputedly has one of the best intelligence networks in the world.

Ulsharavas is an oracular spirit that was able to elicit the details of a divine prophecy.
And the Denarians were able to get the details of that prophecy in time to intercept and corrupt it.
You are gravely underestimating the Powers abroad in this setting when the information is out there and they have cause to look.

Make them work for it. Dont just give it away for free.
Some things they will know about anyway, like our shintai. But dont advertise the advantages that dont need to be public.
But more importantly you are proposing that we deliberately weaknen ourselves on the off chance that someone happens to be scrying us with supernatural senses and ability never shown to be cheap or easy in DF and which can't be done on mass in any case.

And before you say that they can question anyone with us that is rumors and hearsay with people that have generally shown to be closed mouthed. Hell we can spread a few rumors. Tell Isabel to spread around how we are empowered by touching earth.
1)I made no such claim.

What I did say is dont use an ability in front of Tuzi, who is someone who has already been successfully interrogated by an akuma.
And who still has a loved one in their hands.
Same with other people who we dont currently trust with sensitive information.

Sometimes its necessary to expose capabilities, which is fine.
This is not one of those times.

2)Respectfully?
We are literally moving Tuzi because they interrogated her for what she knew. That includes the locations of the hiding shaman, and the details of our abilities and resources we mentioned at that meeting with the three shen.

Like this one:
Thank you," you speak up hastily before the plot bear fruit, the hook can catch its mark. "Dragon lines... I know how to deal with people messing with the dragon lines." Hopefully, you add mentally. This is unlikely to be as bad as what you dealt with under lake Erie, but if Lady Eiko means to deal with a Warden of the White Council and a Knight of the Cross, neverming how she might be judging your own power, well it's unlikely to be pretty.

Emma-O's servants now know we know they want to fuck with Dragon Lines for an advantage.
That in and of itself makes our task harder, as they will be more likely to be alert for us making countermoves.
Thats one example of the kind of shit that happens when people get a clearer look at your capabilities.

3)See above.
You are gravely underestimating the information gathering abilities of the Powers in this setting if you think spreading rumors yourself does anything besides confuse the small fry.

More importantly you are talking about making the worse more likely on the off chance that some enemy will imprison us in vat of poison or something which seems like such a long shot as to not be worth considering and could happen in any case.
Vat of poison????
Charred Sinner Renewal refers to deadly or befouled liquid. Milk that has gone rancid. Bad cooking oil. Industrial runoff. Sewage.
We could make fluid for regenerating Essence or healing by urinating in toilet water.

That kind of advantage for a prisoner is freaking priceless, and having an opponent know to look for it and get rid of it because we were careless about information security is dumb.

Yes which is amazing. Now consider that Mab has entire worlds to look at and plenty of other things to do with her time. Now if she had recordings of everything happening in the world that she can look at her leisure I might be worried. But even then not really. As a rule people like Mab are very rare and are very busy people.

Also once again we can hide when hiding in bleach. We don't need to tell them anything. You are way too invested in us being captured by superhumanly informed people.

1)The issue is that you think what Mab did was unique. It was powerful, but there are very many other people who can do similar stuff to a lesser degree who have way more time on their hands.

Dresden's starter villain, Victor Sells the half-trained warlock, was able to livestream his assassination attempt on Dresden from, as far as we know, another city. Dresden summoned Ulsharavas, an oracular spirit, onscreen with whisky and tobacco.
And she gave him the details of a divine prophecy that the Denarians had fucked with.

2)We can hide in bleach from mundane senses. ONLY.
People with non-mundane senses get to roll to find us.
We arent suddenly undetectable.

Tuzi is a spirit.
Do you think a spirit doesnt have magic senses and wont recognize our hiding in a bottle when she's sitting in our car?

And at this point it doesn't matter if we try and hide it. Because with all the ill defined divination methods in DF the question of if our enemies know what we can do is not a question of how much we show off, but how informed the QM feels like having them be.

The 2 essanse part comes from murdering anything sentient.

Whenever the Infernal murders a sentient being, the act nourishes her as though she had justeaten a four-course meal. If she slays a ghost or spirit, then she can reflexively roll Dexterity + Occult against a difficulty of its Willpower. Success conjures a vortex
of crimson flaying winds which slice its dissipating substance into stray motes of Essence. The Infernal regains 2 Essence, and the ghost or spirit is destroyed. Condemning a jaggling-level or greater spirit that is not a creature of darkness
in this fashion "rolls back" the number of times the Infernal is considered to have attempted to don her Shintai form during the current story by one, reducing its cost or difficulty accordingly (to a minimum of Essence 2, Willpower 2, and no roll requirement).
Ah, I was talking about the Shintai rollback effect. For some reason though t that was what Yog was talking about.

And at this point it doesn't matter if we try and hide it. Because with all the ill defined divination methods in DF the question of if our enemies know what we can do is not a question of how much we show off, but how informed the QM feels like having them be.
No offence, but thats just a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If you try to hide it, some people will be good enough or lucky enough to figure it out.
But if you make no effort to hide it, everyone who is interested will certainly know.

See Nicodemus Archleone, who still puts in the effort to sanitize his data tracks and keep his secrets in order to make it harder to hunt him. Its not often that I would use a Denarian as a role model :V, but the dude has survived for two thousand years of drawing aggro and being hunted by Sword wielders. I would suggest that he's doing something right.

Make people work for your secrets, dont give them away for free if its not necessary.

That's dumb it isn't as if knowing about it helps anyone fight us. Besides when we hide in a bottle we are hidden. If we don't tell them we are hiding in the bottle they won't know.
In general the issue with this sort of thing isn't what you can think of right now, it's what everyone else can think of long term as they look for an angle to play with.

See how the leading plan involved asking for the will of kakuri's power set so that we can plan out how to mess with it. It's unlikely that those will include a whole bunch of immediately exploitable flaws, but knowing means we can plan around the greater Akuma's likely actions and try to mess with the conditions of the fight so they favor them less.

And at this point it doesn't matter if we try and hide it. Because with all the ill defined divination methods in DF the question of if our enemies know what we can do is not a question of how much we show off, but how informed the QM feels like having them be.
DP will probably at least make them pay for it when setting their resources up though.

Sure you can summon atemporal Loa and bribe them with whiskey to tell you the future, but getting good enough to pull that safely and finding a spirit that actually wants cooperate* is something of a task.

Then once you do you have to mess with figuring out what's the things they said actually meant, because those guys are never clear.

Even without bringing proper divination into it, getting information means establishing networks and paying/favor trading for information.

The less well known something is, the more people have to spend to be let in on the secret.

* According to the scene where Dresden does this for the first time spirits like that often aren't so much seeing the future as experiencing time differently/exploiting a strange relationship with time as a concept.

So seeing can often mean "go poke the thing in the future and pass the results back" . Which isn't an attractive proposition when the thing they want you to poke is boiling with nuclear hate fire.

1)Weather control as a ritual requires no reagents, just willpower.
And unless she's very powerful, it isnt fast.

2)You dont want to put a linear Sorcerer with no physical protection up against kueijin who may have Storm Shintai.
This is unlikely to go well. In fact we dont even want them to suspect we have a weather worker.
We want Cauldron to lay so low that their existence isnt suspected.

Especially since in October, weather tends towards cloudy.
Historically, 2006 Chicago gets a thunderstorm on Oct 4, and snow the week after. She would be working against the climate, and potentially against hostile weatherworkers.

I will be honest in that I largely prefer Yog because of the questions asked.

I missed the arguments so what was the reason against the crown?

I specifically didnt ask questions because we're down to 6/12 Essence.
Each question costs 1 Essence. If we ask questions while running around we will run our Essence pool empty, and then if we have a random encounter or something comes up we're kinda in a sticky situation.

My plan is only supposed to cover the next couple hours before dawn, which is why its named Till Sunrise.
After we drop off Tuzi and get back home, or to Harry's place?
Then we can ask questions while soaking in bleach to regen.

At least, thats my thinking.

Basically, I chose to go for a shorter plan so we can adjust as things change.
After the next update?
New plan.

I also strongly disagree that starting with one essence in an ambush is something we can brush off. All it takes is a little bad luck and we could pick up something crippling for the ongoing conflict.
Which is why I modified it to be 3 motes kept in reserve. Incidentally, this avoids anima flare too.
Also, pretty sure that your MiS trick won't work. The other party has to knowingly be doing your bidding. Unless they do it because we said so rather than because they were doing it anyway or for some personal reason I don't think the charm will trigger.
They would be following our will, same as when Thomas got us that coffee.
1)Weather control as a ritual requires no reagents, just willpower.
And unless she's very powerful, it isnt fast.
I asked and was told that it was possible. It'll take a roll, and might fail, but it's possible.

We aren't putting her against an Akuma. She'll be doing the ritual offsite obviously. If we fail to make use of a weather worker at all in the primary confrontation with our enemy, it doesn't matter if our enemy thinks we have a weather worker. Because we effectively don't have one. That's the issue with hoarding resources for the perfect opportunity to use them - we essentially deny ourselves said resources completely, as the perfect opportunity never comes.

That's debatable. It'd be really convenient, so I hope that's the case, but it's clear that they undergo some serious transformations when they come back from the hells.

The most direct example being that you can banish a ghost from something of someone it's possessing, but the same magics don't (to my understanding) cause jades to drop dead.

This is indeed the case and since you are playing a Exalt with 5 occult and a specialty in one of the Yomi Hells I can just tell you guys why that is: The corpses are 'the temple of the spirit' in a literal way. The binding of a Wan Kuei to their corpse is less like Risen possession which is transgression and, though the remains of a divine mandate long defiled, more 'natural'. The vampires of the Jade Court are on some level meant to haunt the world of the living to test and be tested. What does that mean for Murder is Meat? That Molly does not know, she has not tried it.

1)Linear sorcerer, not Mage.
Distance work is going to be significantly more difficult, if its at all possible. And we dont have any reason to believe she's stronger than, say, Pauline's Curses 3.

2)If she attempts to work clear skies in the same region as a kueijin with Storm Shintai trying to work clouds or storms?
She would be going up against an akuma. Opposed roll, at a time of the year that climate favors the kueijin.
And unlike her, every kueijin clawed their way out of the Thousand Hells, with what that means for will.

At which point you add a whole new set of possible ramifications or conditions to a failure or botch.

This of course assumes they brought someone with Storm Shintai 5, which is not guaranteed, but seems a likely requirement to defend against the use of sunlight as a weapon against their greater akuma.
IMO.

3)We are supposed to be protecting Cauldron.

The point of joining them was to keep them alive and preventing others victimizing them, not weaponizing them for our own fights.
Their first engagement is very much not supposed to be throwing an unprepared twenty something year old into a magic fight with a Hellspawned greater akuma of Emma-O or its entourage.

I wouldnt want Maria to draw the attention of Yomi Wan, for her sake and our own; weather workers can be weaponized to appalling purpose, and she wants to travel to Europe for her honeymoon, whicn takes her away from our watchful eye.
She's helped by obscurity.

4)The woman is a mortal, not an Exalt. She doesnt get Key Abilities to ignore 1s.
Even if she didnt get in a fight over it? Consider the potential effects of a failure or botch while trying to do major weather magic on an accelerated timetable in a major city, not just on this fight, and not just to herself, but to Chicago.

To just point out one potential consequence?
O'Hare International Airport, 4th busiest airport in the world, is within 30 miles of South Works, and Chicago Midway International Airport is within 15 miles. Combined both airports saw almost 97 million passengers in 2006, 77 million at O'Hare alone.

Consider how many aircraft are in the skies around them every day, and how an abrupt change in weather would do.
Let alone a magic fight over weather conditions.
Some guns are better left on the mantelpiece. For many, many reasons.

PS
Also, in my opinion? Literally the most valuable thing a weather controller could do for us is watch the sky and tell us when someone else is tampering with weather patterns, or moving enough magic around that its affecting the weather.
Even if they cant locate the person doing so, just a headsup matters.

Furthermore? Canonically, the presence of Fae royalty in Chicago has always affected the weather.

Mab's focus on Chicago in Small Favor resulted in a pretty strong blizzard, and the six or so months she spent keeping Dresden's body alive after Changes caused one of the coldest autumn/winter/spring seasons in Chicago.
Similarly, when the Kemmlerites were trying to run the Darkhallow, it disrupted the weather badly.

Knowing is half the battle. The other half is violence.

[X] Plan: using what we know v 0.5
-[X] Spend as much time as possible dispersed in a bleach bottle while traveling and not otherwise occupied to restore your essence levels
-[X] Have Michael call Charity and get her to call the school and excuse us for a day
-[X] Ask questions to get a better understanding of the situation. Never let your essence pool dip below 3. Use Rendered Villain Dispersal to regenerate essence between questions.
--[X] Using the video recordings of 12 wan kuei we have:
---[X] "what are the abilities of the Kakuri's Will on Earth"
---[X] "Who among the forces of Kakuri sent on this mission is planning to use your power to free themselves of Emma-O?" If the question reveals that at least one of the traitors was caught on camera, use their recordings for the next questions
---[X] "How are the ones trying to escape Emma-O's grasp through this mission plan to accomplish this?"
---[X] "What are the ways to contact those planning to escape Emma-O's grasp through this mission without alerting those who are loyal to Emma-O?"
---[X] "How do the forces assigned to this mission fight (what are their fighting styles and abilities?"
---[X] "What are the kakuri forces' plans for the day up to the planned confrontation with us"
-[X] Get Harry in an attempt to turn the ley line trap around
--[X] Make him take Mouse with him as a bodyguard
--[X] Call Thomas and ask (not order) to also go with Harry
--[X] If he needs your help, set up a meeting for after you drop Bùshì Tùzǐ off. He can start researching now.
-[X] Call Maria and ask her to make the weather as sunny as possible. You'll be willing to pay for any reagents and other expenses, and a hefty bonus on top of that if she tries.
-[X] Have your Cyberdevils track the plans for South Works Steel Mill.
-[X] Get Bùshì Tùzǐ to safety, it might give away the game, but making sure she does not get another visit from the Akuma is more important
    --[X] To the Last Station
-[X] Contact the traitors. In exchange for turning on their comrades, and bending the knee, without surrendering their souls, you'll extend your protection and guard them against Kakuri's wraith
--[X] Use phrases like "don't hang up" and "keep talking to me", "don't outwardly react" and the like to trigger Mercy in Servitude to show what you can offer to them.
--[X] Excellencies to negotiate as appropriate
-[X] Enough playing around, as soon as your preparations are complete and essence is recovered, go straight to South Works and clear out the enemy
--[X] Coordinate with SI and Harry the timing, so your assault coincides with his disruption
--[X] Make and distribute images of enemy forces to SI and explain how they are not equipped to fight those and should avoid contact at all costs. If needed, use TTC.

Arc 6 Post 17: Seeking Sanctuary
Seeking Sanctuary

3nd of October 2006 A.D.

The detective, you note with some amusement, struggles to control her face as you return to the group with a cat in your arms. You speak in response to the unspoken question in your father's eyes. "Detective, this is Tuzi. She got a visit from our friends. I need to get her to a place of safety in case they decide to return."

She perks up at her name, though you notice she isn't exactly pleased at the sight of the CPD badge. Trouble there? you wonder. On the one hand spirits have little reason to think themselves bound by mortal laws, or it could just be something mundane, maybe she just got an unfair parking ticket. Does Tuzi drive a car.

Focus Molly, you tell yourself. As hectic as the night has been it is only likely to get more so . "Lydia, dad. I'll meet you at Harry's place with Brother Devsimar. Tell Harry that...." you pause, and then extend your senses into the surrounding night for a long moment."On second thoughts, let me write that down so you can read it in the car. The night has ears. "

Turns out the glove compartment has nothing to write on besides the back of Black Rider's paperwork that you had gotten from the auction so you borrow the detective's pad writing out the whole story in tight curling script that looks less and less like your hand the more you write. Some part of you, the part that is a demon once bound in Kakuri, really wants to put the whole thing in code.

Alas Tuzi... does not have the best impression of ghouls. 'Grave robbers and carrion-feasters' is what she calls them not inaccurately granted, but there is so much more to them than the blood of Lamashtu. "They are what the world made them, better choices obscured by the fog of the world's disdain. I won't say most ghouls have no choice in the evil they do but the rest of us do not make is easy for them to do good. Who knows maybe you can teach them something while you are there."

A feline head cocks to the side, like she is trying to set to right a world you had tipped over ever so slightly then she gives a huff, more contemplative than affirmative, but you know she'll be a good guest at least. The law of hospitality runs deep in the hidden world and not as you had once assumed, just because no one wants to call down the ire of Queen Mab. The roads, overland or under it are dangerous. At any moment some monster or peril could fall upon one, the akuma, the Skinwalker. Knowing that guest and host at least can trust each other once the words are spoken makes the fears more manageable, the lights shine just a little brighter along the way.

Speaking of lights someone had managed to rind and rig up an old spot light at the entrance to Jade dog territory, possibility as a way to help deal with veils. Cruder attempts at magical illusion fail when confronted with strong light and sharps shadows, especially if one combines that with... yep there's a mirror, chipped and spotty, but it will do the job.

"Great work," you congratulate Adam, on guard slouched against a wall, though anyone who would take the position for slacking would soon be dissuaded. He's just about ready to push himself off the stone with his left hand and his legs all at once leaving only his right to sharpen into deadly claws.

"We live to serve," he answers, as reflexively as someone else might say hello.

Trying not to let the inward wince at the expression show you lead Tuzi into the main sleeping area. She seems surprised at the colorful sleeping-bags everywhere and the savory smell of curry coming from the pot on the campfire stove, but nowhere near as much as she is at the sight of mortals... including a mortal baby in a sturdy crib among ghouls and vampires.

One of said vampires practically jumps out of his skin when the cat turns into a woman.

"Calm the hell down Jack, it's a cat not a bloody wolf," another of his companions laughs. Had your new allies gotten into trouble with the Alphas, you wonder.

For her part Tuzi heads straight to Deborah and starts chatting her up.... which has to be at least a little weird since she is only wearing an blanket. Maybe it's a cat thing.

In any case after assuring yourself that your new guest is as comfortable as you can reasonably make her you make your way out of the sewers alongside a quiet Brother Devsimar.

"You don't approve?" you ask once the sounds of the Last Station had faded behind you.

"Hmm... it is not my place to approve or disapprove, but it is a dangerous thing you are attempting young one. As the Veil lies between earth and the havens,as holy places are hidden behind screens of bamboo so too is the world of man and the world of spirit sundered even as they walk side by side. Such is the way of the age. To break it is to set your eyes back to another time that shall not be returning."

"Or to set your eyes forward to the age to come," you counter with quiet conviction.

Silence falls again until you reach the surface and Black Rider with Lieutenant Murphy in the passenger's seat looking impatient under the professional mask.

"Can you drive. He can do it on his own but it looks a little freaky you know?"

"Where are you going to..." she cuts herself off as you pour a cup of bleach set it in the coffee holder and pour yourself into it to drift and rest in the embrace of tainted liquid.

One advantage of your new state is that the detective does not hear you when you giggle at the muttered. "Shesh... I thought Dresden was bad."

You find the wizard in question in on his doorstep, duster flapping in the chill autumn wind, the odd leaf catching in his hair as the eddied of magic from his shield bracelet send breezes flying in unexpected directions. "Murphy where's Molly? Stars and Stones!"

So you like startling people with the new flavor of bullshit power. What's Harry gonna do sue you?

"That wasn't a spell?" The words are only half a question.

"Just an insight into the nature of water," you answer innocently. "Can you help with the ley lines?"

What follows is a technical conversation that leaves the good lieutenant looking like a layman at the plumber's convention when the new kind of branch fittings come out, but the gist of it is easy enough to understand once you are done. Harry can use the model in his basement, Little Chicago, to try to alter the flow of the ley lines from behind the relative safety of his apartment wards, but if he gets caught there will be no doubt in anyone's mind who is messing with them or he could go to Ping Tom Park, even South Works to unknot it on the spot, leaving a longer list of suspects if he did get caught and you managed to get away in time, key being those last seven words.

Where does Harry try to undo the snarling of the Dragoon Lines?

[] His apartment using Little Chicago (Safer, but guarantees giving away his identity if caught)

[] Out in the City (More dangerous, but can hide involvement if you manage to leave fast enough)
-[] Ping Tom Memorial Park
-[] South Works

OOC: I had Michael go with Lydia so help keep her safe since it seemed to make sense.
