Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

[X] "It's too soon to try to plan around having to deal with Mab on top of the rest of this mess. Why don't we just focus on stopping the necromancer plot for now, and play the rest by ear as the situation develops? I know that's probably not how you normally do things, but it's been working for me so far." And should we need to knock Harry out before he can summon Mab, we can make that decision if and when it becomes necessary.

I have to say I really object to a plan that says it's too soon to plan how to manage the issue with Mab.

Just ignoring it and hoping it will go away is an appalling idea. From Molly's perspective, Mab is no better than the necromancers, given she's just had some of her friends murdered, her family attacked, and herself kidnapped under Mab's orders.

It's time for Mab to start regretting that five dot Enemy she's made for herself.

What should we do instead? Outright calling Mab is dumb and trying to bargain with Lash is even worse. The situation is too fluid and there are still too many unknown variables in play for us to try to plan around Mab.

But when it looked like Ankou had finally cornered the bastard back in 1917 Kemlmer made a deal with him, to teach him the secrets of mortality as only men know them, as only mortal men are meant to know them, allowing him to slip the chains of Winter and be something like what he used to be."
So this sounds excessively concerning and seems like a Ankou might be running on Outsider role breaking. And like Kemmler was always planning on using this to make Ankou edible.

On the other hand ... it's rather interesting timing on Mab's part that she only set Harry on the case just as Ankou was at risk of really getting eaten. Especially considering what the time limit she placed on Harry's task implies about what she already knew about the situation. Like her primary concern is not letting Ankou get eaten to power a Kimmlerite apotheosis.

It makes me wonder how much Harry ACTUALLY knows about Mab's relationship with and intentions for Ankou. As opposed to how much he was misled by fae sophistry.

Also I just thought of a very useful, albeit dangerous Question "What does Mab intend to do about Ankou"

Accept that at this moment Harry brings more complications to the table than he solves. We can't do anything about Mab or Harry's debt to her, so we bounce. We use the car to find the necromancers and end them as a threat. The situation with the death god can work itself out one way or another, and we can circle around to intervene on behalf of one side or the other once we know Kremlerites are not about to be empowered.

Finding out the exact wording of what Harry is being asked/has agreed to do and using Molly's five dots of Occult plus Excellency to look for anything that can be exploited.

Finding out from Harry and Bob what other capabilities Mab is likely to have to track us or Harry specifically or intervene.

Warn Michael that Harry might need to be distracted or taken out of action at a critical moment.

And multiple other other things which are better than wasting the opportunity to prepare for a major issue.

As far as Moly understands mantles this would not be rule-breaking, it would be putting on another costume, taking on another role. Keep in mind that as a god of death he's still hunting necromancers, so he seems to still be on the side of the natural order... only you know without having to grovel to Mab. Remember that Bob said about many of the old gods preferring to die rather than grovel to the fey. It is a fair assumption that Arwan who did make the deal did not have a light heart about it. Maybe it's just Molly's experiences with Winter, but she does not sound like a good boss.

If this was a Nemesis infection issue, then Arawn wouldn't have needed Kemmler's knowledge to create a new mantle to give him a new way to interact with the world, he could just have ignored the constraints of the mantle of the Eldest Ankou.

Or she wanted Arawn rendered vulnerable so she could have someone she prefers to steal his power.

I could see a Redcap being able to crash a Dark Feast and consume his power, for example, given their nature.

Stupid question - is Harry's commission for Eldest Ankou (i.e. a mantle) or Arawn (i.e. a specific individual)? Because in theory (somehow) transferring the mantle to Kattrin as she intended, then calling both Odin and Mab on her would be poetic justice.

Mab explained who the Eldest Ankou was and what he did and them he said, find him, find him and then call upon me that I may know.

Hmm. I wonder if anyone here knows of any other ways to transfer mantles around. Can Arawn do so voluntarily? If Gard rings up Odin, would he know a way? For example, can we find some patsy to transfer the mantle to - such as a loyal Valkyrie who has an alternative mantle so they're not completely bound to Mab?

Oh my. Are we sure this isn't a plot to get Lydia as a replacement for her father by Mab? That would be an appropriate revenge from her, I feel, especially if Lydia being was only possible because of Ankou slipping the leash. Also Mab standoff. Shame we don't have "kill immortals" charm yet.

On the given options... Dealing with Lasciel is a bad idea. Like, totally bad. And Mab would probably know, and it would still be a breach of Harry's word. That's probably a no go. Calling Mab now wouldn't fulfill the oath - Harry still hasn't found elder Ankou.

I'll point out that Mab, as a once-human, might be susceptible to the Black Feast. So a Galaxy Brain move would be to lure her into the ritual and feed her to Molly / Lydia / Gard. That's totally a stupid idea, though.

We could just leave Harry here, so he could continue his search for Ankou on his own, while we deal with Holt and find Ankou via the Crown, which should be faster than Harry's methods.

Also, "find" doesn't mean "be able to get to. So, find Ankou without Harry. Warn him, so he can escape, then give Harry his location, and let him summon Mab.
I'll note killing mab is very close to an end the world scenario it's possible it's not gonna end well even if one can do it.

Ugh, had a thought, and it's too bad we don't know IC about Winter's charge to defend the Outer Gates. With how easily we fought those Outsiders at the start of Arc 1, and how hard it is for most to kill them, we could probably leverage a promise to help fight Outsiders in the future (with bounded limits on how much fighting clears the debt) as leverage for a Fey Bargain to forgive Harry's debt.

IDK, just an idea that wouldn't leave my brain until I posted it.

You guys are going crazy over defending this guy and fighting Mab, but why?

Moly came out of her ordeal with a bad impression of the fey, but her pathological hatred is for fetches specifically. We don't need to be rabidly anti-winter to be IC.

We've spent this whole arc running scared of a necromantic wannabe; we don't have the leverage to do anything as ridiculous as contain Mab, or deal with the fallout of trying.

Doing something like directly obstructing Harry is itself landing us in similar trouble.

All for a guy who we know nothing about accept that he wasn't awful to his kid.

Ankou was a grown god when he made his deal, and a grown god when he broke it. We don't need to nanny maid and martyr ourselves for every asshole on the planet.

Giving a little push to tilt the scales is one thing, but let's not recklessly gamble Molly's soul and service just for the hell of it.

For my part I'd rather Ankou not end up on a tree, but I'd prefer it to winning a stupid prize because he was playing stupid games.

Edit:
Corrections.

Exactly this.

We can't fight Mab, at least not for a very long time. It's stupid to even imply otherwise. If we want to survive long enough to get that powerful, we have to avoid getting squished like a bug in the meantime.

It's not our responsibility to save Arawn. We've already rescued Cindy and saved Lydia from Capricorpus, and we're angling to prevent Katrina from doing whatever badness she's planning. That is enough for us as a baby Exalt. If Harry wants to stick his neck out to save the millennia old former(?) death god, that's on him.

Basically, we need to have reasonable expectations and not tilt at invincible windmills while we're still using training wheels.

Maybe not fight Mab, but the services of a baby Exalt that can kill outsiders is very useful to Winter. Can we use that to leverage some kind of deal? The idea is just stuck in my head.

We'd have to be very careful limiting the terms of the deal to avoid any commitment too cumbersome, but we can roll superhuman dice pools in social combat. If regular mortals can make deals with the Fey without getting rolled over as long as they're sufficiently clever about it, we at least stand a decent chance.

There is no way letting Mab get to Arawn won't splash back on Lydia.

She is definitely an innocent.

In fact:
"He swore an oath to Winter, him and all his kin, they became the keepers of the dead in Winter's service.
He swore an oath not only for him, but all his kin.
Mab will try to get that all. Which includes Lydia.

Sorry, but that's a bad idea. We are not yet smart or powerful enough to negotiate ourselves an advantageous deal. You don't bargain with the Fey except from a position of strength, otherwise you always get the raw end of the deal. You might not realize it at the time, but that's just how it works, and we wouldn't be negotiating with some minor Fey noble, but for something like this it would be Man at the other end of the table.

Nope. Nope, nope, nope...

We're inevitably going to end up on the proverbial radar of many factions and Powers, but that doesn't mean we need to go out of our way to do it. There are too many holes in our defenses and tools missing from repertoire to safely sit at the grownups table just yet.

Just keep in mind Harry failed his Damsel in Distress will save, which means that in all probably he is going to try to do something to help Lydia even if it is in defiance of common sense and/or Queen Mab.
