Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

I wonder what the chances are of school attendance attracting unwanted attention, either mundane or supernatural? People who know Molly, such as fellow students and her teachers, and regularly interacted with her are going to notice that she's...different.

Regular Molly last week, then Infernal Molly when she shows back up after an unannounced absence? Given the muggle tendency to try to rationalize supernatural encounters in ways their fragile minds can accept and understand, I bet at minimum she's going to get called to the guidance counselor's office and end up with a handful of pamphlets ranging from suicide prevention and anti-drug use to recognizing domestic abuse and planned parenthood info.

You have missed a lot of school days this year and 'being kidnapped by the dark fey' is not something you can tell the school administration. Charity is already going to have to come up with an excuse for the two days you lost by magic.

That said 'I am not ready for school because of all the craziness' is going to be the argument for skipping... somewhat dented by the fact that she does not want to just stay home nice and safe but go out.
Its very much the right move to, at the very least, earn ourselves a little leeway for whenever the universe erupts its next round of cosmic diarrhea onto Chicago. The more liberties we take now the harder things will be for us when something truly forces our hand. School shouldn't be quite the burden now that we are in our new state, and with a roommate in our skull keeping us quasi-sane through the tedium, and we can handle certain things after. God willing there will still be a hospital there when the shadows grow long.

And God willing we will still have a head long enough to worry about anything longer term than that.

[X] Skip, you have more important things to do
-[X] Go talk to Harry, you have a lot more to tell him and it would be nice to do so without Mom listening in

What's the academics skill for in ExWoD? Like what situations would we use it in?
Hold on, let me open my WoD books.

Academics
This catchall Knowledge covers the character's erudition in the humanities: literature, history, art, philosophy, and other "liberal" arts and sciences. A character with dots in Academics is generally well rounded in these fields, and at high levels may be considered an expert in one or more areas of study. Not only can this Knowledge impress at salons and other Elysium functions, but it can also offer valuable clues to certain past — and future — movements in the Jyhad. If you like, you can choose a specialty for Academics even at less than 4 dots.
• Student: You're aware that 1066 isn't a Beverly Hills area code.
•• College: You can quote from the classics, identify major cultural movements, and expound on the difference between Ming and Moghul.
••• Masters: You could get a paper published in a scholarly journal.
•••• Doctorate: Professor emeritus
••••• Scholar: Scholars worldwide acknowledge you as one of the foremost experts of your time.

"The immortal Seneca once said, 'Dum inter homines sumus, colamus humanitatem,'" she said, sliding her dagger across his throat with delicate precision. "Or, 'As long as we are among humans, let us be humane.'"
He gasped for air, clutching at her cloak until his hand stilled.
"If you could speak, I know you'd thank me later."

At this time, there is more unknown than known in the world, and endless discoveries await.
Chemistry, physics, astronomy, and athematics are only nascent sciences; literature and rhetoric bloom. Scholars are only just developing universities. With Academics, you have the capacity to be the light burning against the darkness of ignorance and superstition.
• Novice: Your Latin could use some work, but you can make yourself understood. You have scratched the surface of your field of study, amassing enough basic knowledge to speak without looking foolish.
•• Student: You read the right books and have a firm grasp of your subject. You can argue your opinion in your field competently.
••• Learned: You have graduated from the student to being the teacher. You could instruct any interested party in your chosen subject. You have gained a reputation for being an academic.
•••• Scholar: You have dedicated your academic life to your subject, to the exclusion of other tertiary interests. No fact is too obscure for you to add to your substantive body of knowledge.
••••• Master: You have written a number of books on your subject, which are used as citations by scholars in your field. Your eloquence on your topic is legendary and you are in demand as a speaker to the literati.
Possessed by: Clergy, scientists, tutors, court officials and advisors, university scholars
Specialties: Instruction, Research, Esoterica
Fields of Expertise: Arts (literature, music, philosophy), Law, Medicine, Theology, Sciences (physics, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics)

Academics
Despite the failings of the American system, mages cannot afford to be ignorant. Whether they're self-taught, unusually accomplished, or schooled in some system beyond the typical public education found in the U.S., most Awakened folks display an unusual degree of scholastic achievement.
This Knowledge reflects your overall academic understanding – language skills, math, history, and so forth. As with Crafts, you should choose a specialty to reflect your greatest area of expertise. (The Well-Skilled Craftsman option applies.) Even outside that specialty, however, your Academics rating reflects your general competence for scholastic subjects. And though every mage ought to have at least one dot in this Trait, many groups (especially Hermetics, Etherites, Solificati, and the various branches of the Technocracy) advocate much higher levels of education and knowledge.
For scientific fields, see pp. 288-289. For languages, see that Merit in Appendix II, p. 643.
• Dabbler: Basic primary and secondary education.
•• Student: Basic university education, equivalent to a two-year degree.
••• Scholar: Advanced university education, equivalent to a four-year degree.
•••• Professor: Advanced specialized study, plus an advanced university-level education.
••••• Master: Refined and advanced scholarship, with highly respected academic achievements.
Possessed By: Students, Scholars, Scientists, Journalists, Authors, Wizards
Suggested Specialties: Teaching, Liberal Arts, specific field of study (History, Language, Folklore, Politics, etc.)
These are the examples by splats that used Academics mainly.

Basically, it's for recalling general but advanced knowledge from the world.

Honestly, recalling every instance of Abilities across multiple Splats is a bitch and a half. If you want to keep it simple, refer to the Vampire 20th Anniversary Corebook. Everything else not covered like Hearthwisdom or Religion? Dark Ages 20th Anniversary is your friend.

Werewolves rarely see the light of day, so is Mage. Mummies? Pfft, who the fuck even read Mummies these days? That splat is so obscure that I only learnt of it through ExWoD.

Wow that is a super-majority for going to school. Just what kind of YA protagonist are you? :V

Arc 0 Post 22: Secrets on Ice
Secrets on Ice

6th of July 2006 A.D.

You sleep like a rock or maybe a block of ice that night foregoing the covers you usually wrap yourself in the semblance of a burrito, remembering nothing of your dreams and glad of it. Maybe that is why you make with the sun in spite of having gone to bed near midnight or maybe it's the feeling of renewed potential with the new day. It feels almost as strong as it had in Arctis Tor... only you know without the mortal peril.

Gain 4 Essence

As you stretch in bed, sure with the certainty of long experience that no one else in the house would be up quite so early you feel more positive about life than you had in a long while. Sure the White Council might decide to cut off your head, but the same was just as true on Monday only you did not know the danger was there. The world seems clearer in the morning light promising if not that all would be well than at least that you are done stumbling around in the dark

Enough dillydallying now, a voice that sounds startlingly like your mom comes to mind though no sorcery but simple habit. It is good advice you might as well get to the bathroom first...

Getting ready for school is the same sort of carefully controlled chaos it is most mornings. This time it is Matthew yelling about his missing shoes and Hope crying over forgetting to do her spelling homework. You grab the shoes from where you had seem them in the backyard behind the tools and toss them to your brother with a teasing 'I followed the smell' but steer well clear of Hope. That is a 'mom emergency'.

One of the advantages of being colder than the average corpse is that you don't sweat anymore and you do not really feel the heat either. You can dress in all black in the middle of summer. Hurray for silver linings... Silver that reminds you. Mom has a thing about you wearing rhinestones to school, says it makes you look tacky, but you cannot say that about actual proper silver and Nana Sophia left you some old silver rings back when you were so little they were probably a choking hazard for you and silver goes well with black as a certain Fallen Angel demonstrated.

"What do you think," you ask Usum as you pose in front of the mirror, non-ripped skinny jeans, jacket and Grateful Dead T-Shirt.

"I think those within this House of Learning should indeed be grateful that they may behold your sublime countenance even should it be the last sight before their death."

"That's not..."
There is an odd edge to his thoughts."Did you just make a joke?"

"Humor is not beyond the scope of my abilities,"
the demon replies, quickly adding."But I spoke no untruths."

You probably should not be snickering in front of the mirror like this, really you shouldn't. A pity your good mood does not last long.

"Did you know the plant in your room is dying?"Amanda asks, popping up as though from the very livingroom carpeting which matches the cheery blue of her dress.

"What?" you ask, startled. That's a crane's bill, about as hardy as a house plant gets short of grabbing a weed from the garden. It had been a gift for your parents fifteenth anniversary from Mrs Evens down the street, who did not actually like any of you but had weird notions of neighborly courtesy so a really boring plant it was. It did not really fit in any other room in the house and mom did not want to re-gift stuff so you had taken it off her hands, joking that maybe you would find out if plants grow well with heavy metal after all.

"Maybe you froze it with your..." she waves sort of vaguely towards all of you and presumably the unnatural cold you had been thinking of as a good thing.

"Mom I need a pair of gloves!" you shout down the hall. After a moment and a reply half muffled by distance you add. "No I'm not going to to cut off the fingers I need them so I won't freeze everything I touch."

"In the attic.... Halloween costumes... big chest," comes back by way of answer.

The attic was practically stuffed with well stuff, decorations for the holidays table cloths and linens, old carpentry projects of dads and chests, lots of really big chests. That was not to say it was disorganized, everything was slotted in neat like soldiers ready for parade. Sadly you are not their general and so you you start looking though the first big chest...no gloves just some old papers and... Is that a letter?

The paper is old and yellowing and you know just how old it is because the thing that had first caught your eye had been the date on it 16th of November 1988, three days after your birthday. The writing on the letter is your mom's but you do not recognize the address, someplace in Boston. Who would she be writing to three days after giving birth and then not send the letter?

It's not as hard a guess as one might first think. Mom does not talk about her parents, like at all and it does not take Sherlock Homes to tell that something really bad must have happened for her to cut them off like that. But if your guess is right she had at least considered sending a letter and while she had not sent it she had not thrown it away either.

What do you do?

[] Take the letter, you are curious about the grandparents you never knew even if they turn out to be assholes

[] Leave it be, it will not do anyone any good to open that

OOC: I know you guys expected school, but I wanted an update to ground us a bit more in the house and the family since both are important to Molly and only of marginal note in canon.

I'm curious, but not curious enough to violate Charity's privacy, especially after we went through all the mental and social gymnastics necessary to calm her down on the whole 'Magic is Bad!' and 'My Daughter is Possessed by a Demon!' issues.

[X] Leave it be, it will not do anyone any good to open that

Actually, on second thought...

[X] Leave it be for now, it will not do anyone any good to open the letter unbidden.
-[X] After school, when things are hopefully somewhat more calm and there are fewer jawas around, try to find time to speak with Charity about the letter and her past, of which we know so little. If we have learned anything in the past few days, it is that ignorance can lead to disaster.

Well we don't have to be concerned about soul devouring charms for loup-garou at least we can just beat them to death while wearing these.

You can try but you do not have Brawl. You would have to forge them into some kind of weapon to use with Melee and there isn't that much silver there.

More generally they could be used as a start for sorcerous if you want to go down that path.
