Of all things, it's Mei Daiyu's choice of insult that startles Zhuan Kun enough for me to finally get a good grip on him. His muscles slacken with surprise and I'm able to drag him back several steps as he states, "Elder Lei is a skilled artist and worthy Elder; you should not insult him by comparing him to these knaves."
"What? I- Elder Lei is a frog, not a toad!" Mei Daiyu shoots back, glancing over at me for confirmation. All I can do is shrug as best as I can. "Right? His skin isn't nearly dry enough to be a toad." The distraction seems to be enough to ward off Zhuan Kun's blinding rage as he begins following an inner logic I can only guess at.
The reports are censored because of how incredibly detailed and specific they are. The things we tell him are only as reliable as a teenager at a job interview he barely wants, and we aren't giving him any important details anyways, like our natural treasures or technique aspects. Also guys. Something that's just occurred to me. This guy isn't allowed to share anything in the dossiers. But as Zhi's didn't have anything he can share every single bit of information he learns about us. Which means it will be accessible to anyone who's got access to this fairly low level government officials report. It's a really good idea to tell him nothing
"Um… what about Tester Ni Weiyan?" you ask. "This assignment is to accompany him, no? Should… should I strive to ensure his well being?"
A half-shrug is the response. "Should it not conflict with your other priorities, I do not see why not," Sister Xiong states.
This guy is not half as important as he lets on; it's not critical that we answer him at all. That said, look at how he selected people the first time around. Two of the top nobles of our circle and a diplomat. Our family probably IS the level of analysis he's interested in.Why the hell would we wax poetical about our family? It's embarrasing, he's likely not a prospective customer, and it doesn't answer his questions.
[X] I will trade on the reputation of the Caretakers. Knowing exactly why I have been sent out and why my dossier was so censored could put him at ease.
[X] I will tell him of my history in the Delving Heart. Perhaps by knowing what I have accomplished in the past, he will lose whatever hesitance has gripped him.
-[X] The mission I led into the Deeps. Where I gathered comrades of various skills and led them on a quest to take care of a problem to the sect .
I'm not going to split the vote on a quibble, but this wasn't to solve a problem for the sect.
I think this is a superior choice to trading on the Caretakers' reputation because I'm not sure they even have one to speak of outside those in the know. They try to keep under the radar. Most of our own sect don't know what they do, or what their official name is.
Anyway, this story is probably a better way to inform him that we are capable. The Deeps of the Delving Heart are extremely dangerous, and we lead an expedition into them and came out with everyone alive. We fought a giant fookin' snake and her tide of snake babies, cleverly traversed obstacles, negotiated passage with some spirit shrews, and finished things off by battling a mighty Vestige of a long-dead civilization. We give examples of leadership, good decision-making, and combat capability.
