The Path Unending (A Cultivation Quest)

[x] How should i conduct myself as a Caretaker outside of the Heart?

[x] How can I best make use of this opportunity to better myself while out of the sect?

[x] Will I have any additional Caretaker duties I need to accomplish while escorting?

I'm curious who we're going with but if we only get 3 we'll find out anyway in a week and can't do anything about it so may as well stick to other useful info.

We'll meet the other disciples when we meet them, not a huge concern, tester's a bigger priority because they'll have an outside political reputation. Second vote is an alternative for people who really want to cover everyone.

[x] How should I conduct myself as a Caretaker outside of the Heart?
[x] What should my priorities be on this mission?

What do we need to hide and what do they actually want us to do.

[x] Is there anything in particular that I should bring?

[]What is the purpose of passing the inspector between trios from different sects, and is there a procedure for if the trio we're handing them off to isn't there?
[]What is our actual duty during the mission? Are we to be bodyguards, aides, or something else?

-Need to know what we need to do for our Court, especially how to gain their standing.
-Who are we traveling with, most especially the tester in question because socials and politics. The sect members we already have a grasp on from our stay here and may get to bond with later on when we get back. But the tester? We have only a limited time for the trip.
-Her majesty Xiong must know a thing or two about self improvement during long travels for the Court.

I would like to remind people that we only get three questions answered, so think carefully about whether matters that will become clear in time are that important.
Questions about who we will be going with, how long the assignment will be, and what the method of transport will be; will either be answered as soon as we leave, or are outside of our control (or both).

Unless of course, this is about characterisation. In which case, feel free to go Kong Zhi nerd about something.

So, there is now a bit more information on the scope of mission, so we can make some educated guesses.

Firstly, MD said the following:
"The details have been sparse," Mei Daiyu admits. "Something about escorting imperial functionaries on a tour of the western reaches. It will be me, the toady, and a few others chosen by the Administration. All I can hope is that the Scorpion Witch will not be assigned to accompany me; lest she sour another sweet moment."
Which distinctly does not rule out MD being part of KZ's group, as KZ will also heading out to the west.

Speaking of that, we can infer the route KZ will take, and the various legs of the journey based on what Xiong said.

  1. Go to Mockingjay to pick up the Tester
  2. Up through the forest to Honeydrenched Hill
  3. Down to Jingyi's Summit
  4. Continue across the river to Twelve Fields
  5. Where it gets interesting, the trip back and what route to take which I'm sure will be a very consequential vote; both in-quest with KZ's companions and in-thread. I think there will be roughly three options, 'Back the way we came, directly over/through the Brightmaples & Riverboat style. Each obviously with their own pros & cons, and also maybe with the option to do a bit of minor rule breaking and have a detour or two looking for some fortuitous encounters.
I'm very interested in getting out of the sect and having a proper adventure. Who knows, maybe KZ will fall into a mystic realm forgotten to time.

I'm honestly at a bit of a loss at what to ask here. As you say, we'll learn the answers to most of these questions in a week. By contrast, questions asking for advice - what should we bring, what should we be doing - seem equally pointless. It's basically asking Ves to have an NPC tell us what to do. So I might as well ask questions that answer personal curiousity.

[X] Do you know anything about who I'll be travelling with?
[X] Haven't seen Sun in a while, is he still alive?
[X] Can you give Kumi my love?

I do generally see it as a way to angle for GM-hints via Xiong (cf. my "How can I best make use of this opportunity to better myself while out of the sect?" question) with the other questions about asking if there will be a special caretaker missions/estimated trip length useful things to know prior to doing the requisition & market actions, as knowing what's expected just before those actions gives useful context.

But broadly, yea, it doesn't feel like the most impactful decision so as long as they're not 'wasted' on inane stuff, so it's a bit w/e.

So this kinda gets at it, but maybe a more broad questions about places she would suggest visiting if the path allows?

I too am curious how we are able to replenish our anam stores quickly when we're constantly moving from one place to another. With battles expected for every few kilometres of wilderness if one's not careful, it's nice to know where or who do we need to go on our field trip, tips and tricks to stay out of trouble or if not, how best to exploit it given our knowledge of the area.

I suspect that Ves deliberately avoids having NPCs tell KZ what to do, so as to avoid forcing the players' hands. However, we have usually been able to ask for direction and advice if we wanted it.

He will be accompanied by a trio from the Resolute March, so watch your words carefully.

If this was explicitly mentioned, I think we should ask about it. Maybe it's just obvious like don't talk shit about the Emperor but Zhi has some big old educational gaps.

[X] What things must I be careful of with the Resolute March?
[X] How can I best make use of this opportunity to better myself while out of the sect?
[X] What sort of troubles should I anticipate?

[X] If we are accompanying the tester as bodyguards, what are we expecting to defend them from? Do we suspect the mission will be interferred with or sabotaged?
[X] If the tester or any of the escort members behaves suspiciously, who are we supposed to report it to? What is the proper procedure in such a case?

[X] Do the Caretakers have any contacts in these areas that could be of service?
[X] Do any of these areas have a higher density of Natural Wonders than the others?
[X] Your elder sister mentioned the tester would be collecting all the sparks that had been missed. Does that include those who have cycled anam when they were overlooked?

This is relevant:

Nightwatch Grove, for its part, is none too fond of the Heart either, but their disdain is nothing compared to the feelings the Resolute March has towards your sect. There was some kind of incident four hundred years ago that Sister Xiong does not expound upon, simply explaining that a disciple of the Delving Heart should be wary of friendly fire in the March's territory.

Worst case is ambush to humiliate the Delving Heart infront of the Imperial Tester. Very risky if they are caught as they are interfering with Imperial business... so not very likely.

I suppose they could challenge one in the team and try to show superiority that way as well.

[] Will I have any additional Caretaker duties I need to accomplish while escorting?

Won't this just be summed up as "A Caretaker should always be on the lookout for strange things" or whatever Jetei said way back then?

Oh, lol. That clears thing up. I completely forgot that Sect lesson and just assumed the Resolute March were the military force of the Emperor.

I do still think it would be worth inquiring further about.

MMM...

This is weird, but I think the primary question to ask in this case is "what is there that bares out their suspicions?"

As in this is the supposed reasoning
"It is this duty that his imperial glory thinks we have been lax in," Sister Xiong states with a huff. "It is his opinion that the testers and the Seven Stars that accompany them have been derelict in their duty to plumb the depths of the Empire for Sparks. And it is towards this duty that you are being dispatched."
Emphasis mine.

So since this is an odd situation ask her to the best of her knowledge is his opinion accurate, or if there's something else going on with this (as in a power play of some kind.)

Otherwise, I guess I am curious as to testers, who are they and what do they need to be to fulfil that role? Seemingly they belong to the sects, so are presumably cultivators, does it require a specific skill set, is it just people of a certain level? If so why do they need bodyguards, or are we meant to be more assistants?

In any case Kong seems to be getting the very definition of sink or swim ATM, since ****ing this up means potential knock on effects for a lot of other things.

Could (of course) be that the mission will be nice, relaxed and just an opportunity for Ves to show off some world building and the like, but things are rarely so calm.

Side note...can we take the pig?

His nose has proven to be seemingly impossibly sharp, so for sniffing out talents (and finding sick loot) they might prove to be a valuable asset.

comes her answer, the vague disdain in her voice leaving no doubt who she blames that on
I assume she's either referencing Sinai, or us for not educating ourselves fast enough.

mmm
A ghost of a smile crosses Sister Xiong's face. "Sending the Eighth out on assignment this early… it is not usually done. Were the need not pressing, it would never even be considered. But if Elder Hotei is to be believed, it is not only a pressing need, it is a vital one- and that makes this a very unusual situation."

"And when there is an unusual situation, upon whom does the sect call?" Sister Xiong asks.
OK I don't remember which Eldar Hotei is, but that also begs the question, is it this specific assignment that is considered unusual, or it the assignment over all?

Again this is where our lack of knowledge comes into play, for example is the tester being accompanied by a group of others from a different sect, or are they just there for the hand off? For example in sus mode, my mind goes "are they kicking up a fuss as a screen while certain testers in some places are looking for something or someone specific?"

Which distinctly does not rule out MD being part of KZ's group, as KZ will also heading out to the west.
Shrug. Hard to say, since sending out 8ths apparently isn't usually done.

However, as you say she is going out and is an 8th, so it'd make sense, doubly so with the compass construction kinda hinting at that.

I feel a burning need to ask the question that would let us yoink someone in Nokai's situation.
