The optimal outcome, of course, would be for the two to be one and the same.
Or for the businessman to be able to see profitability in his counterpart's position. Economically slavery isn't a good idea anyway since that locks in a significant portion of the population towards basic manual labor only and they will try their damnedest to not let the plantation owner make money. Meanwhile, an emancipated society has a far greater capacity for production since workers are incentivized to do more for greater income.

Well I mean unfortunately people... are assholes.

and people who are assholes and enjoy power tend to enjoy that power over people.

Has the cotton gin been invented yet? If so wouldn't conventional wisdom be that slavery is on the way out in the states due to the increasing unprofitability of the slave plantations?

Sadly true at this point. In addition, economic theory has reached maturity yet so they don't realize how much more they could be making.
We can beat the Americans to the punch of transitioning into a laissez faire economy, come to think of it.

Edit: Fuck, but we'd have the problem of John Locke being British, and so was Adam Smith. Well, Scottish but close enough.

Eh... no. We have no influence on governmental economic policy.

Even if France could, we don't really have anything to get started with. After all, we lack damn near everything Britian has currently to out produce them, and even if we started trying to kickstart industry, it would take years... and peace.

Adam Smith is a SCOTSMAN!

But yes, you are correct.

Edit: Really though I am really nervous of not having Plaus to assist me fully on writing the updates and that may stop me from... producing insane quality updates...

But hey, I'm just hoping Plaus is going to be back soon so that will not be the case.

Okay for clarification, I did not mean "we" as in the player character specifically, more France in general. And I did not mean "right now, in the middle of the war" just "before OTL".

You need money for that...

And while you have Capital now... you might not have some later.

Edit: For those wondering why the Wealth Changed: Jourdan finally brought our Belated Paycheck. Plus overtime pay for us bailing out the Army of the North. Turns out even Generals get Hazard Pay for saving France.

-[X]A Peace Offering: There is a diplomat from Prussia coming towards you, wishing for safe passage for Paris... He's talking about an armistice to the war. You have heard nothing of the sort? DC: ???

-[X]Protest the Invasion of Egypt (Unofficially): You should know that the French Navy is not capable of striking out against the royal navy. [X] Plan: Diplomatic Guns

Well now glad to see some good rolls for us and we really need peace on at least one front. Both to give France some breathing room to you know rebuild/create a new government. And for us to really train up our stats because while we are good we've also been pretty lucky as well so far. I also want to see peace with Prussia so we could go and fight in Italy as well.

Also glad to see an update after so long!

[X] Plan: Diplomatic Guns

Artillery is our highest stat. Might as well take advantage of it.

I agree with your reasoning, but the problem with the Diplomatic Guns plan is that it is not very diplomatic. France needs Peace more than anything else. So the Prussian Diplomat action is extremely important, IMO.

Also, IC, the black market guns from another country are not going to be to the gribeauval system models, so they are unlikely to be as good as French standard artillery and will play havoc with our logistics

That is fair, thus

[X] Plan: Diplomatic Guns

Diplomatic Guns is the only contending plan, so it keeps my vote. And while standarization of army equipment is nice, having more guns is nicer.

ok, then i am changing vote

[X] Plan: Guns and Olives Branches

edit: while I stand by what I said, IC, about gribeauval system, I agree that, if war starts again, more guns is better than one impregnable fortress, which can be avoided. And with more guns, we can have more trained artillerymen, who can use better guns as a later upgrade.
