@serialkilerwhale Defiance Industries can work. Have them be the one who won a GDI contract to produce all of their Titans and Wolverines. Now you need a reason for them to be interested in Shanxi. There are no wrong answers but I am not familiar with Battletech equipment and when I looked at what DI made I just see a wall of names.

For Defiance Industries to be interested in our colony would not be too hard by the look of things since they seem to produce quite a bit in the universe from the look of things. As for why they would like to invest in a new colony.
Plenty of space to build up their own factory and an open area to test vehicles.
Access to resources that could be found.
Cheaper labor
Competition against some other company that is expanding in the colonies.
Higher information security than back on more developed planets.
What they would probably offer us? I leave that to the GM but it looks like a fair bit.

I feel that having access to locally produced Titans and Wolverines is a safe possibility. I am not familiar with Battletech so could those more knowledgeable could you recommend any technology that is close to GDI levels? I'm picturing them as an up and coming corporation who are going to grow larger after winning a military contract. So the more advanced stuff might be unavailable.

I think a corporation that is interested in the fact we have a planet with Trees and an apparently non-toxic environment could be interesting.
I'm not sure if FTL is cheap enough for tourists, but perhaps they would be interested in the botanical resources of the planet. Maybe even want to bottle the clean air?

There are already several Garden Worlds like Eden Prime and Benning so it isn't that unique. Giving a Corporation exclusive access to the xenobiology of Shanxi is a possible source of revenue. You'll need a wildlife that has a property to get then interested tho and that depends on the rolls.
Same as above. Tho I don't know all of Exo-geni's interests.

Hawking their mechs. GDI for the most part favors conventional vehicles with semi-articulation to climb over uneven terrain over the use of expensive, and somewhat less well armed mechs. (Titans, before you ask, are over twice the weight of Preds).
Defiance would want to get further toeholds into GDI besides the Steel Talons, and an alpine world like Shanxi where tanks have limited mobility is an ideal place to show off the capability of their newest generation of mechs.
Industrialmechs wouldn't hurt either.

Looks good, could you tell me more about what Hawking does?
There is mention of Shanxi having a moon. So hiring a He-3 mining corporation could get you income and a discount on He-3 to make fusion power plants.
Asteroid Mining has also been mentioned so an asteroid mining corporation is an option too. Not sure how to handle that tho cause asteroids are everywhere so supply would be through the roof. You'll most likely have to pay for their services and many colonies that are still developing would also want the boost in metals to fuel their growth.

Not all asteroids are guaranteed to have useful material in sufficient enough quantity to be worth setting up shop on. Coupled with the need to defend such instillations once set up really cuts down on candidates.

But finding 1 in a hundred when there are several thousand asteroids is still a lot of asteroids. Plus there are indicators on which asteroid is metal rich and which is carbon rich from Earth so getting a closer look with a spaceship should make identifying the profitable asteroids much easier.

The fact that Shanxi is a mountainous world is one. DI is going to be looking for place where they can create their complex. And the mountains of Shanxi offer the best way and area for that. Plus it offers them a place to sell and test their newer products like industrialmechs and newer light mechs instead of the huge current models.
Exo-geni has a lot of fields they work in. But both them and Sirta are unlikely to care until more information on the planet and wildlife is discovered.
Binary Helix on the other hand would be very interested. A whole fresh world for them to study and develop their augmentations off of and see the effects. Plus access to a large pool of military personnel to sell their already established augmentations. Plus they can make augmentations and genetic manipulations for the people who will live there to make it easier for them to survive on the planet. And because of their interests they won't get in the way of DI.
