The Passing of Beautiful Histories (Civ Quest)

Guys? Have none of you noticed that right now the new Oracle is basically doing the Codify Laws action?
I doubt anybody hasn't noticed. But we're at Low Legitimacy and she is Undecided about the new King whereas taking the action to stop her would give us one turn and gravely insult her, so acting against her right now might just get the king deposed.

Plan Central hopes to tackle this by starting the Palace to strengthen the position of the King.
Plan Legitimate Capital-isms opts to build a wall around the capital city instead since that raises Legitimacy while still strengthening the King's seat of power. And since the Wall doesn't take two actions like the Palace, it has a free action to restore trade with the Alwethi. As the Alwethi noticed us conquering the Upriver tribes and decided to move camp, which in turn helped Anye leverage their grip on the kingdom's Wealth and them building a Metalworks into a power play that impoverished the rest of the kingdom.

[X] Plan central
-[X] Military Training (+Martial)
-[X] Build a Palace at Maye to house the ruling family. It will solidify the idea of Maye as capital of the kingdom, and ensure all things pass close to the eyes and ears of her King. (-Economy, --Wealth, -Martial, counts as two projects, begins the Palace early wonder)
-[X] [Free] Produce more tools and goods, so that the copper will put to work (Metalworks project becomes Pre-Industrial Forges project)

Hum...

[] Plan Wide Wealth
-[] Settle [South Coast] (-Economy, +??? later) [North Coast (trade), South Coast (trade)]
-[] Settle [North Coast] (-Economy, +??? later) [North Coast (trade), South Coast (trade)]
-[] Fortify [Dalwa] (-Wealth, -Martial, +Martial later) [Anye, Dalwa]
-[] [Free] Produce more weapons and armor, so that the soldiers will be stronger and Maye's enemies will know not to anger her (Metalworks project becomes Pre-Industrial Military Forges project)

Lack of Boats is currently causing a Stability penalty.
Anye being our only source of Wealth is giving them too much power.
North Coast and South Coast would produce Trade, meaning more Wealth(Dalwa started at 3 Econ, so we might be looking at 2 Wealth each) and more Boats.
Extra boats might even help us keep control over the Silfi, as more ships means more warriors can be sent upriver and more tribute downstream.

The Martial cost is painful but it would give us another +Martial going into the next turn and might be negated if the free manpower action trains troops.
Plus, having Anye use the Metalworks to forge weapons&armour means we get to expand our professional army retinue to conquer more tributaries.

This would not do anything about the Oracle vs King power struggle, though if the King loses, we might switch to playing as the Oracle. Divinely-appointed line of God-Queens anyone?

In order,
No, you're just that unlucky.
Word coming to the King's ear is that yes, this was totally Anye's plan all along, and not an over-eager attempt to make barter simpler for them that went horribly right.
The coastal settlements would be a fair distance along the coast, and it would put you in more direct competition with the Far-Coast tribes and the Oathtribes, but yeah they would totally necessitate MOAR BOATS.

It's less a power struggle... more... well, she's certainly a character, and while your king is good stuff, he's no unslayable woman who doesn't feel pain and has a direct line to the ancestors and spirits, telling her what to do. You're just lucky what she's being told to do is dole out some commandments.

You know, simple stuff, like always wash in running water or only wash in a basin once. And always bury bad people face down, and sages/mystics/seeing people can never drink the ferments that dull the mind's awareness of the ancestors, and how the ancestors absolutely implore you never to repeat a thing three times in a row, and that no copper things be brought into the temples or have ever touched food or water brought into the temples, the stones and wood used to make the temples, and really it would probably be best if you washed before you came inside if you were handling copper at all (because it's trying to absorb your soul).

Simple stuff.

You should read it the way she spoke it:
I was coming of age, growing tall and strong and beautiful. Mother said I should find a warrior to marry, who would see my size and my strength and would desire strong sons from me. I knew that the smiles would be for my sons, and never me. I knew that any good would not be mine.

I learnt to fight, and conquered the warrior brought out to test me, and they sent me off on a boat, armed with a few flint throwing spears and a few bits of wood for a shield.

I do not even get a chance to fight. Held in reserve upon the boats to protect the river from attacks further along, I can only hear secondhand how the Worthy Band gains glory and praise from the King himself.

But I do eventually get my chance.
With more Salt than Anye produces in a year.

You know, if that copper attitude translates over to lead and other toxic metals it might be a good thing.

Cooper trying to steal your soul is actually a good discovery, because if there's some guy or gal you really don't want joining the ancestors and speaking in their place, you can jam them so full of sharp copper objects that there won't be enough of them left to talk.

Should probably keep said sharp objects somewhere secure so you don't end up with a pissed off zombie ghost posessing a soulsucking needle or something similar.

The Arguments
King Omon has barely begun his reign before the garrison commander at Gadawa requests his personal assistance. As a man who'd had some experience with the last time the Gadawa commander "requested aid with temple issues", Omon strongly preferred not to have another Oracle overthrown, complete with sudden restructuring of the political climate, so instead of sending soldiers, he came himself.

Which was probably a good thing, since the Oracle's commandments for good living were... causing some problems, to say the least.

On the one hand, there was a group of priests who had taken the name Sevali, the Literalists. They were of the opinion that every word from the Oracle's mouth should be taken as absolute and as truths of creation, whether or not those words were sensible, reasonable, or in at least one case, even coherent.

The second group, a collection of mostly-older sages, took up the title of Alameya, the Faithful. They were of entirely the opposite opinion, that the current Oracle was mad, possibly even cursed, and that only a bare handful of her actual commandments had any sense to them as they likely applied to all spirits, not just the evil ones whispering to her.

Between the two groups, the commander had already broken up eight aggrieved wrestling fights as well as dispersed an actual mob procession.

There was one group who took the title of Meyalani, Philosophers. These priests were somewhere in the middle, certain that the Oracle's words were, for the most part, faithful repetitions of the ancestors' and spirits' own, but that it was ultimately impossible for Men to comprehend the actual intent or context of the situations their words were meant to apply to. Their stance was simply to pick the most sensible-looking things the Oracle said and compile them into rules, and leave the rest for the priests and sages to meditate on to draw closer to the spirits' true intentions.

Finally, there was the King's Group, Nimina, or Burnished. They were of the opinion that the laws of the spirits were for the spirits (or, at least those who were meant to interact with them), and that it should be the King who gave out these commandments, as his spirit was deemed to have the right qualities to decide such things anyway.

Wandering directly into the middle of this mad scuffle was King Omon himself, who had only one thing to say about all this.

[] Why on earth are you bothering me with this nonsense?! (Lets The Arguments issue burn itself out, ???)
[] Side with the Literalists (Officially back the Literalist movement, which requires barely any personal input to deal with the outcome and completes the Codify Laws megaproject with all components determined by the Oracle)
[] Side with the Faithful (Officially back the Faithful movement, which requires barely any personal input to deal with the outcome and effectively cancels the Codify Laws megaproject, and also forcibly replaces the Oracle mid-term)
[] Side with the Philosophers (Officially back the Philosopher movement, which will require a significant time commitment to iron out the details with - One random action will be heavily penalized (if it's a megaproject action, only a partial penalty will apply), and the Codify Laws megaproject will complete with additional miniturn influence from the King)
[] Side with the Burnished (Officially back the Burnished movement, which will utterly stall most of the King's other plans - Cancel the Palace Megaproject, instead do a modified Codified Laws project and receive a near-full refund for the Palace cost)

It's so fun when almost all of your theocratic faction checks generally lead to spontaneous implosions and violent coups.

Look, no weak Spirit could ever bring back an Oracle from the brink of death, and any who can I want in my ballpark.

Basing a system of laws on a group deciding after debate what the best rules are is the best idea for a legal system we can get at this point. It also means we are not completly ignoring the oracle that forms the basis of our legitimacy by choosing the heir.
