So, I've been doing some digging into the history of our proud people, and I think I've divined the reason why this most recent disaster happened. Namely that the Faithful were almost wrong and the Literalists were almost right.

Let's take a look back at the birth of Inya the Oracle. She's out on the battlefield, dying and killing in equal measure, and as a result gets reforged with a direct hotlink to the Twenty and Five. And that, my friends, was the birth of our first proper religious schism. The Literalists versus the Faithful versus the Philosophers. Of which the Philosophers won despite basically being cowards going golden-mean fallacy on the issue. Still better than the Burnished who chose to simply ignore the Spiritual matters. It is worth noting that Inya herself was, logically, a Literalist, at least as far as we can tell. And I find it rather interesting that only a few turns after going against the Oracle's words, we end up with a Death God wrecking havoc on absolutely everyone.

Specifically, I think it means we can safely conclude one thing. The Literalists were right, and Inya the Dread Oracle was speaking the Laws of the Spirits that bind us all, and by disdaining those laws we brought ruin upon ourselves. That is the direct cause of the Death Plague.

However, the Faithful were not entirely wrong. Because if you look at the big picture, we see zero connections between Inya and literally any deity who isn't the God of Death. Seriously, she heard him speak to her in times of need, she warned about the Soul/Mortality-destroying Copper and, most notably, the only God who punished us for not following Inya's rules is the Lord of Mortality.
This also assumes that the Death Plague is deliberate on the Lord of Death's part, when there's a very real chance he's currently going "I warned you about the copper, bro!"

Of course, that's not particularly useful right now. Unless Uwali's bends the river of time, we can't retroactively listen to Inya and follow her guidance, and the plague seems to be mostly over by now on account of almost everybody being dead anyways. However, it does provide a way forward for us, if one that is not entirely clear.

Naturally, any prospective King would like to believe the Burnished faction, which supports the idea that the ceremonies for crowning the King mark him as the equivalent of a god in the mortal realm and will grant him a great deal of respect in the hereafter, though most royals prefer the Faithful.

The Literalists aren't a very mainstream faction at the moment, the sect being almost exclusively favored by ascetics and early monastic orders.

There was the Oracle during the reign of King Eiza, who admitted to offering herself up to bad spirits and cursing the Mayep with droughts.
King Selja the wise supported the Usurper Oracle to overthrow her. And times were good.

Yet, the bad spirits plotted revenge.

When Selja would go on to subjugate the Silfi for their copper, bad spirits came to him.
"You, Good King. Arþ a Genius." they said "where any oþer would surely fail, you alone could manage to accomplish what this option sets out to do."
These lies were abhorrent to the Air, even the King could sense it changing. Alas, reason had already left him.
"Forget what you came for, forget þat þe quarry is the only prize worth taking. All Silfi should bow to your majesty" they continued. "It is tradition." rumbled from the earth, down from the deepest mines, where the dominion of Earth will rob fire and man alike of their Air and vital essence.
And so, King Selja came to elevate a chosen few amongst his most trusted, rather than the warleaders and strongest fighters. And rather than negotiate an agreeable peace with the Silfi, Selja the King would come to claim dominion over them all in an act that would spend the blood of generations for the pride of a people, the hubris of a King and a few worthless villages.

Among these strongest fighters was Inya. Who lived only by grace of the spirits, having been refused the armaments she truly deserved..
Nobody would deny that Inya was a strange Oracle. But anybody would tell you that she was backed by powerful spirits. Spirits that helped subjugate the Silfi.
"It is so unfair" they would tell her. "þat you were not chosen to wield the copper armaments of the chosen oh Oracle. But see? You did not need them. Perhaps nobody needed the cursed copper. Perhaps the copper bred weakness. Come, watch how it afflicts the miners and smiths who work it daily. You should take revenge. Denouncing it will make you feel better. Denounce it, þat is our will."
And so, Pride begat Envy, and Envy begat Evil. All for want of Air.
But even the Oracle could not undo the Copperworks. Realizing this, she instead taught the Mayep her truth; that the copper was repulsive to the spirits. Which it was.
Her spirits.
Bad Spirits.
And so, it would appear that the spirits would win. That the Mayep would grow to distrust the Copper that brought them conquest, would forget the legacy of Selja the Wise(misled though he might have been).

Then came Omon.

Omon brought Air back to the Mayep.
Days he would labour, blowing away the miasma generated by the bad spirits
But Air is ever rational. And some ideas had merit.
And so, Omon of the Air, became touched by Earth.
Visions of a grand palace assailed him. Works of Earth as beautiful as they were unreasonable. Emotion took him and the Kingdom turned to an impossible project that Omon would never live to see.
And so, indirectly, Earth allowed the flaws in the New Laws of the Mayep to grow, so that the Mayep might be reminded of the breaking of the Old Laws. And so, the Mayep were rewarded when the Earth offered them two mines on the palace site. And so, the Silfi were allowed to nurture their grudges like a farmer nurtures its crops.

The lessons we should take from this are that bad spirits will try to mislead good people, that the Oracles are susceptible to being deceived by bad spirits(and need the counsel of learned scholars) but that a King who goes against the Oracle(and her council of scholars) is especially susceptible to the temptations of bad spirits.

This story is Faithful propaganda and slanders the good works of the Oracle and worse blasphemes the works of the Twenty and Five. And by "the Twenty and Five" I mean "literally just the God of Death" but he still counts!

The Copper must have gotten to you.

The King is dead. Long live the King.

Due to a monumental check failure (consisting of no less than two critical failures and a severe failure), your chosen King will not be surviving the turn. This failure is so absurdly severe, you won't be able to benefit from the replacement option's bonuses either. Although, you do get to function as the priestly caste for once, and elevate the replacement.
Can we have some more context on the disastrous reign of Nameless II? More accurately, what passed and what failed from the below plan, and how did this all line up into disaster in the narrative? I can see some unique combos that could result from different placements of 2 critical failures and 1 severe failure. I also can see some good news if the Nameless replacement managed to root out the corruption before his end.

To specify, I rolled three dice, considered the results, and didn't bother doing anything else because they screwed the course of the turn up too hard.

I have good news, and I have bad news. The bad (some might say good) news is that the attempt to hide the assassination failed miserably, and now basically every major power-holding faction is up in arms and you may very well see the fall of the First Dynasty of Maye. The good news is that I've crawled out of my WoW classic release cave to bring you this news (and update) sometime tomorrow.
 
Teetering on the Edge of a Blade
As Houn, the Prince, presided over the funeral of his predecessor, he could not help but feel a sense of foreboding. Important figures in the priesthood had declined to attend, claiming they "would not participate in this farce of the order of things." The Kingsguard retinue, one of rare few whose officers were drawn from the soldiery, declined to be part of the procession, and murmurs were brought to him that they refused to attend in shame for their failure to secure their charge from treachery. Houn's contacts at Anye, the city administration, privately admitted their attendance was so some of their other masters in the city could have assurance that Houn himself did not participate in the murder.

Only the members of the royal court and council, and then, only the clean ones, seemed at all at peace with the proceedings. If Houn was not acutely aware otherwise, he would not have known the only reason the royal funeral procession took place was because the priesthood threatened full rebellion if it didn't.

It had become abundantly clear, for a man such as Houn, that the royal family had become complacent, like the master smiths that were typically rotated out of the metalworks when they refused to adapt, so sure of their superiority and position that even in the face of open opposition they thought themselves unassailable. Were it not for his acumen in administration, he might not have seen the signs, might not have known what to do.

As it was, he had little opportunity to correct the course of things, busy with recovery efforts and a desperate attempt to restore the flagging economy with the temporary shutdown of the country's trade routes. Dozens of sentences were handed out for various types of laziness and conspiracy, but typical channels were falling apart as claimants were increasingly urged to take matters into their own hands against Maye's administrators, so that for the most part he was left to adjudicate murder and torture of a government official instead of corruption.

The legacy of Houn's forefathers' forefathers was falling apart around his ears, and without an especially brilliant idea, he would probably be the last of his line, and, if his ears in other places reported honestly, the last of his blood.

Now that the Project has entered it's construction stage, you can suspend work on the Palace project on rare occasions as needed. Be aware that using it too many times, or more than when it's availability is refreshed, will confer a strong chance for the project to go defunct every turn it's been suspended.

There's some ways out of this, even a few guaranteed clean escapes, but even if you walk out without civil war, odds aren't great for the palace or the divine mandate.

Basically, saying that the King's Law is more important than the royal bloodline, enshrining the office of King. It tries to appease the factions by giving the priests an advisory role and having the King hunt down the culprits.
Also continues to work on the palace to continue our Megaproject commitment, which might see our Wealth tank(we're currently at a 2-2 situation) but between our economic surplus and the bit about Maye recovering at the end of the turn, we might be seeing some Wealth generation coming into the next turn.

Same 3 pips of Priest appeasement except with surrendering the culprits instead of consulting the Oracle, which means ceding authority on Judging to the Divine when it comes to Royal affairs(leaving the King impartial when conflicts of interest pop up).
Small risk to the palace this turn but the hunt for corruption could give us some essential Stability and might keep our Wealth from collapsing.
Although, our not being above reproach might make this a bad time to reproach others on their corruption.

Right now, our Stability has 1 positive modifier and 5 negative modifiers and is labelled as everything being on fire because of the Royals with the Traders, Priests and Warriors all being furious and refusing to work with us on relevant actions.
Having the King start removing local enforcement rights sounds like a recipe for getting people to rise up against the royal family.

Also, given that we only have one step of Troubled Times and that removing the local enforcement rights guarantees the removal of one step of Troubled Times, it kind of makes the Hunt for Corruption action weaker in its possible stability impact, as there wouldn't be any troubled times to remove.
 
Um, can we have a plan that increases our civ's Martial capability? Our Martial is kinda dangerously low right now.

~ is not a full + though. And while we're at a Bare 1 Martial right now, the + from Gadawa is balancing out the - from Rebllious Tributaries.
Also, Maye is due to recover at the end of the current turn. And Maye had a garrison, so we're liable to start recovering Martial next turn.

Also, our Stability is currently hemorrhaging and we're still bleeding Wealth with that plan. And the Warrior faction isn't exactly happy with the royal family either.

Martial should probably wait for our Wealth and Stability(and possibly legitimacy) to stabilize.

Something like Plan Straightforward Recovery Attempt should be pretty decent if we want to start generating martial(or setting up martial generators) going into the next turn, as Anye is/was our main Wealth producing city and getting rid of the devastation in Maye probably caused the "On the Mend" +Stability modifier in the first place, which should give us a fair bit of freedom when it comes to our action allocation.
