Engineers

Kibe Koume, 26, Office Manager
Tiny & angry, Kibe went to school in Albia, picking up the language, the religion, and a fuckload of swear words. Speaks Albian.
Mechanical +2, Ballistics +1
Office Manager: If Kibe is not assigned to a team, the Office Stress is reduced by 1.

Sakane Jun, 26, Second Team Leader
A soured patriot, Sakane is married and has a young child being raised gender-neutrally. His two brothers who fought in the war.
Structural +2, Aerodynamics +1
Team Leader: If there are any additional projects, Sakane will lead them.
Joinery: Sakane has training in the traditional Akitsukuni carpentry art of joinery, creating complex self-supporting joints with no fasteners or glue. When working with non-monocoque wooden spars or ribs, +1 Structural.

Tezuka Kenji, ???
A stoner with occasional flashes of insight. Nobody really knows what he does, but he's probably useful?
Aerodynamics +2, Chemical +1
Flashes of Brilliance: Each natural 10 rolled by any team Tezuka is assigned to gives +1 forward to the next research roll.

Hasegawa Morio, 26
A hopeless nerd with a photography habit, mostly on account of developing his own film, Hasegawa seems to do nothing but work and stack card houses, but somehow has an incredible attractive boyfriend. Speaks Gallian.
Chemical +2, Ballistic +1
Silent Workhorse: Hasegawa can work on two different projects at once for no cost to Office Stress, providing they use different stats.

Kawamura Yosai, 25.
Serially successful womanizer and incredibly attractive, Kawamura doesn't seem to have much of a personality outside of seducing women. Well, except for that time he seduced Asuka, which nobody talks about. Speaks Dyske.
Structural +2, Electrical +1, Social +1
Easily Distracted: If Kawamura is working on the same team as a female or non-binary employee, the team is at -1d10.

Koide Hatsu, 24.
One of the few female graduates of an Akitsukuni engineering school, Koide is brilliant and incredibly driven, but her first job at Akibara was both humiliating and exposed her to an abusive coworker. Her father is a rich businessman with factories in Joseon, and she's engaged to Ken from Castles of Steel. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +2, Structural +1
No Sleep: If you let her, Koide will work herself to death. She can work a second project for no Office Stress, but all her stats will be reduced to 1 for the routine.

Kobayashi Ayao, ???
Disowned heiress of the Kobayashi family, all Kobayashi wanted was a career and to be a modern woman. For her trouble, a cousin threw acid on her, scarring her face, neck, much of her torso, and her left arm. Despite appearing serene and above it all, she's actually an avowed communist activist and baseball player.
Aerodynamics +2, Social +2

Adachi Ren, 24
Adachi learned chemistry from her father, one of the most famous chemical engineers in the country, rather than through formal schooling. She's married, has a kid, and takes spirituality very seriously. Yes, you did the math right, she had Yuki when she was 17. It's 1912, folks.
Chemical +2, Electrical +1
Young Mother: Adachi will cause double Office Stress if she has to work multiple tasks.

Uyeno Sei, Ballistics Engineer, 31.
The oldest member of the crew, this is Uyeno's second career. Her first was as an officer in the Imperial Navy with specialized technical training: her very promising career was cut short by her transition. Her work in a naval arsenal on machine-guns landed her the job here. Briefly dated Satomi (the age range is a bit creepy but again, 1912), she's missing a piece of her ear and is deaf on that side, from an exploding cannon. Recently returned from Varnmark from experimental surgery, she's known for her skill navigating gendered bureaucracy.
Ballistic +3

Mi Kyung-Jae, 23
A recent graduate of the Imperial College of Heijo, Mi is from the recently annexed territory of Joseon. For those keeping track at home, that means he's a Korean national living in Imperial Japan in 1912. We haven't seen much of his personality because he's rightfully terrified of everything around him. He has a specialty in endurance engine design and modification. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +1, Chemical +1
Endurance Engines: Mi has an excellent understanding of metallurgy and tolerances. Any engine he works on gains +1 Reliability if a 16+ is rolled.
Pulsejet Wizard: Mi is now one of the world's leading experts on the pulsejet engine. He can be given his own project to custom-craft pulsejet engines, and he gives +1 to any pulsejet-related project.
Joseon National: Mi does not have security clearance to work on any top-secret projects.

Miyoshi Shigeri, 23.
A non-binary person and admirer of Asuka's work, they were in an support role in the Army before joining the company.
Structural +1, Mechanical +1, Aerodynamic +1
Mechanic: Miyoshi has some experience repairing and refurbishing aircraft. They get +1 if assigned on the clean-up phase.

Other Employees
- Ohara Satomi, 22, Mr. Ohara's niece and the company test pilot, Ohara is a general lesbian disaster. She's good at flying planes, driving cars, and kissing girls. She's bad at being patient, being respectable, and sticking to literally anyones conceptions of gender roles. Deeply in lesbians with Coralie D'Amboise.
- Fujkikawa Sotatsu, old, modelmaker. He's an old man and toymaker and we don't see much of him because he locks himself in his workshop a lot. He's friends with Kawamura?

Assets
- Engine Test Rig (Allows engine tweaking and optimization.
- Wind Tunnel (+1 Aerodynamics)
- Rapid Prototype Lab (+1 Clean Up)
Expanded Cast

Akitsukuni Industry
- Homura Mohoko: Head Engine Designer for Kobayashi. First female engineer in the country. A lot of sex appeal.
- Okumura: Head of Akibara aircraft design.
- Yamanaka Hajime: Kobayashi engineer. Young and eager.
- Igarashi Masazumi: Kobayashi engineer. Reserved and experienced.
- Admiral Akibara Toru: Imperial Navy Admiral. Maximum nepotism. Maximum douchebag.
- Lt.Cmnd Akibara Shinzo: The above's son. A hottie but very forward.

Character Families
- Matsura(?) Mizuko: Asuka's sister. Was paralyzed in an accident in Asuka's first flight. Lives Elsewhere and is married now. Can't forgive Asuka, even though she's tried.
- Adachi Motoki: Adachi's husband, an accountant. Legally blind.
- Adachi Yuki: Adachi's 7 year old daughter and wannabe pilot. Very adorable.
- Yachi's Brother: Exists.
- Sakane's Wife: Exists. Drives him a bit crazy, but he loves her.
- Yachi's Brother's Wife: Exists. Is statistically likely to be pregnant.
- Lt. Coralie D'Amboise: Gallian pilot in exile. Satomi's girlfriend. 25. Accomplished bisexual duelist. She flew in the war for a single day, and for her troubles got a hole blown in her cheek and had her left arm paralyzed.

Akisukuni Army & Ex-Army
- Lt. Torio Tanaka: Yachi's former observer as an enlisted man. Was jumped up to fly Ducks and lost a leg on his first mission. A trained painter, married to Torio Saya.
- Captain Amari Shiro: A Dragonfly pilot who ended up flying as Yachi's partner. Kind of delightfully twinky. They sorta slept together at one point, which wasn't great. He lost his previous boyfriend in the April Offensive and turned his plane into a shrine. He was shot in the gut and is still recovering.
- Major Izuhara: Logistics officer, Imperial Army, this bespectled officer stood up to the Caspian Crown Prince and accidentally kicked off the Akitsikuni-Caspian War. The guilt was so much that, after almost a year of running Army procurement, he shot himself in a phone both.
- Captain Nakai Sekien: Army scout pilot. First person to drop a bomb from an airplane, later head of the Duck Squadrons.
- Captain Teshima: A Desk pilot that fought with Yachi. Lost an arm in the process, took over for Major Izuhara after his death. Seems cheery despite it all.
- Captain Nashio: A real piece of shit dude and probably a rapist, he's also a war hero as the second-highest scoring ace on the Akitsukuni side. He was a young shitty kid in way over his head but it's no excuse.
- Lt. Kinjo: Kind of a dumb lump and Nashio's friend, one of the desk pilots. Dead at 19.
- Lt. Okazaki: Yachi's friend from before the war and pilot, he died in a spin in his dragonfly. His death probably hit Yachi the hardest.

Westerners
- Rose & Antoinette Sears: Pioneers of flight. Sisters. Black in 1910s not!America. Yikes.
- Timina Guasti: Famous aircraft designer from Otrusia. Likes big planes and green.
- Prince Protasov Vasilyevich: Crown Prince of Great Caspia. Real dick. You gotta hand it to him though, a decent flier.
- Count von Zeppelin: Invented rigid airships. Runs a successful airline business. Damned impressive.
- Bennhold: Aircraft Engineer. Experimenting with metal aircraft.
- Aileen Middlemiss: Albian reporter for the Artimis Times. Well meaning and oblivious.

The Main Character Of This Quest Is Nonbinary And Uses They/Them Pronouns.

I Am Putting This Here Because The Next Person To Misgender Them Is Getting Yeeted Into The Trash

Also here's the Gayaverse TV Tropes page, because why not.

The worldbuilding is honestly such a delight because I love this weird cultural dissonance and buildup. It's so interesting to see this kind of division in gender roles and sexuality, especially when the countries have different standards and povs compared to our own modern social awareness.

Edit: actually in addition, as a sort of thought that popped up, is there any akitsukuni awareness of Aromantic/Asexualness (or should I frame this as a blue vote?)

At some point I wanna do a quest that just does a really deep dive in Albia or Gallia or something so I can really power into some of the West's gender stuff. Like I was playing around with the idea of a quest where you're a bartender solving people's problems, but another strong possibility is a quest where you literally play a therapist and you just interact with bits of people's lives and specialize your practice.

I also wish there were people participating in the larger worldbuilding thing equipped to do similar-but-different weirdnesses with other parts of the setting...

[X] Introduce yourself and express interest.

Given the description of how relationships traditionally work in Akitsukuni, the only way Matsuda can really find out if they fit that mold is to try it and see.

TBH I've been thinking about trying to do some things with the Africa equivalent, but life keeps going crazy.

So this kinda bleeds into the culture of presentation, right? If you're a gay dude there's a stereotype of presenting extra masculine, working on your body...
This is apparently actually a thing in real life Japan. Big muscular beefcake guys in anime are some varying degree of gay-coded, because there's the stereotype that vain obsession with masculine beauty takes the form of basically being a bodybuilder.

The general trend for the fashion for most single straight girls in Akitsukuni in the past few years (clarifying that we mean women in urban areas who have the luxury of going out of their way to achieve A Look) is to try to play up being cute and approachable, nonthreatening and all that, sort of a reaction to fears about Westernization creating a generation of unloveable, coldly professional women. Things have changed on this front way, way faster than it did in IRL Japan...
Ah, so the Akitsukuni are in the process of inventing kawaii?

Haruna from Castles of Steel also rocks this presentation in the rare times she's out of uniform.
She is also literally a princess, so her 'merely normal elevation femme' would probably be anyone else's idea of 'high femme' anyway. Unless I've completely misunderstood what 'high femme' even means which is entirely possible.

Finally, we know a lot about nonbinary expression already, but the general rule of trying to aim for that neutral middle holds. Because of relatively small numbers and, frankly, kinda flying under the radar, there's not a lot of socially ingrained rules short of be identifiable behind this expression. Generally speaking, hair that is long-ish but loose in some configuration is a standby and has been for a very long time.
Yeah, the impression has definitely been given that "coy androgyny" is very much the order of the day; men and women are expected to have a look that makes it super obvious that they are either men or women, and Akitsukuni nonbinaries are expected to make it super obvious that they are neither men nor women but this ambiguous in-between state that causes them to look a little out of place wherever they go.

There are still people who are non gender conforming under these rules too, and we know a couple of them. Satomi is actually a really excellent example in that she's as close to a butch lesbian Akitsukuni really gets, having a sort of boyish aesthetics with her short, loose hair and 24/7 jumpsuits. She faces a lot of shit about this from a lot of people, and a lot of people presume she must be nonbinary or a trans boy scared to commit.
I'd privately resolved even before the update where Matsura briefly speculates, that Coralie also gets this a lot because she's warlike. I'm betting that somewhere between one quarter and one half of her trainees quietly think of her as "closeted transman."

Peeps from Akitsukuni would look at Valentina from Mahan, an actual butch lesbian, and go, oh, somebody needs to tell that trans man that he doesn't just have to crossdress.
@_@

Knowing Valentina, that's starting to sound like a variation on the theme of the Shakespearean "man dressed as a woman dressed as a man dressed as a woman" comedy.

Ow, the Akitsukuni are hurting my brain.

@_@

I'd love to but I don't feel qualified to try without getting screamed at for doing it wrong, which would be terrible and I'd be messing things up and it'd be all my fault.[/i]

[X] Introduce yourself neutrally. (Because you already have somebody)

Okay, I wanna write, so I'm going to close the vote here. It's really close, so basically we're going to have Asuka go for it, but be pretty reserved about things.

Roll 2d10 please!

I also wish there were people participating in the larger worldbuilding thing equipped to do similar-but-different weirdnesses with other parts of the setting...
Don't look at me. Barnstormer Quest is basically faffing about in the sticks of New Allegheny precisely so that I can avoid stepping on the toes of any world building.

(There probably isn't going to be a version of the Flying Tigers or of Eagle Squad, but if the war drags on we probably will see volunteer expedition units. Even if there was, Cas et. al probably wouldn't be part of it)

8-13: Flirt Achieved
"I am Matsura Asuka." You said, and you smiled as you met her eyes. "It's lovely to meet you."

Simple. Respectful. Open for possible flirting later, if you felt up to it, but you weren't sure yet. You could always decide later in the conversation.

She smiled back, meeting your gaze. "Nice to meet y'all." Then she turned to you. "I like your hair." She gestured in front of her forehead in imitation of the sweep of hair you had. "I've never seen a style like that before."

"I wanted to try something different." You said simply.

"It's lovely, and it really suits you." She replied, gaze still locked with you.

Oh no. Here you thought you could simply put it off, but she was flirting with you. And why not? It was stupid of you to assume she'd keep quiet if she was interested.

You had not prepared for this eventuality.

There wasn't really a social script for this sort of thing, and you were on the back foot. You bought her a drink, reasoning that, if nothing else, it was fair given your respective salaries, and all of you talked together like old friends. The women Sonia worked with were all female engineers who had quit from Akibara and Kobayashi to form their own consulting firm when the war started, offering their services to the Imperial government instead. The gambit paid off, and now, ironically, they were back working on the ships they'd originally worked on before, except being paid twice as much and actually working in a decent office environment. Satomi and Minami both seemed impressed by their ingenuity, but they admitted such things probably wouldn't last long. After the war, it was likely they'd be out of a job entirely. It was unlikely they'd be going back to any of the companies they quit: it sounded like those firms demanded absolute loyalty from their employees, even as it offered them nothing in return. Working for Akibara as a woman was a privilege in and of itself, apparently. They talked about looking for work overseas, or maybe just admitting defeat and finding husbands.

As the rest of the table talked ships and politics, you found yourself increasingly drawn into a separate conversation with Minami. Soon, you'd found you'd both turned in your chairs to talk more directly, and you were basically ignoring the rest of the conversation. You learned a few things about her: She was 23, she moved to the city from her family farm in the south (her accent gave that away, of course), and she worked at a bakery before the war. She was the oldest of three sisters, and the muscles were not new: she'd been doing physical labour her whole life, and she loved it.

"So, airplanes, huh?" She said. "I've worked on a ship that had a crane for those. You make those planes?"

"No, I don't make the Navy any planes." You said, and laughed a little. "I've got terrible luck with seaplanes. They keep sinking, literally or metaphorically."

"Yeah, see, that's the thing to avoid, honey." She said mock-seriously. "First thing they told us at the docks: don't let the boats sink."

"Huh. Well, if we'd have had you, I'm sure we would have been more successful." You joked. She looked away bashfully a moment, and you felt awesome in that moment. No wonder Satomi and Kawamura enjoyed this so much!

"So what do you build, then?" She asked.

"I make the Army planes right now." You explained. You'd retrieved a pencil from your pocket and you were sketching out a little Dragonfly for her on a napkin. You flipped it around to show her. "This is one of them, there's a few hundred of them in Joseon right now." You were mentally preparing a pitch of the Dragonfly to make it sound impressive to somebody who didn't know anything about airplanes.

"You're a real good artist." Minami said, eyes wide, sliding the napkin closer to inspect it. "Seriously, this is amazing."

Okay, not what you were expecting. "Um... it's just a doodle." You said. "I have to be good for my job, drafting blueprints and all that..." That was downplaying it a little too much. You drew even before you were an engineer. Your parents had actually talked about finding you an artist to train under when you were a teenager, before you started building an airplane in the toolshed.

"How does it work? The airplane, I mean. I don't understand how they stay in the air." She asked.

"So... okay, the propeller at the back drives it forward, right? Well, when the air passes around the wings..."

Your explanation of how flight worked pretty quickly turned into a discussion of what flying felt like, a sensation still fresh in your mind from the afternoon. Minami was fascinated, hanging onto your every word. You couldn't help but brag a little about your earlier flight, about seeing the city from a kilometer in the air and landing on a dark lake.

"That sounds rad as all get out!" She said. "Sometimes I have to climb the outside of the superstructure of some of the taller ships, and I thought that was high. A thousand meters?"

"You can go higher than that!" You said eagerly. "The one my boyfriend flies can get high enough that it gets hard to breath, like when you climb a mountain."

Her face changed in some unreadable way. "Your boyfriend's a pilot?" She said curiously.

Fuck. Did you just ruin this? Almost certainly. Oh well, it was for the best. Yachi struggling over there with a wound while you talked up this woman. A wave of guilt washed over you.

"Yeah. He's in Joseon right now." You said glumly. "He was wounded recently. I hope he's alright."

She nodded sadly. "My boyfriend's over there. He's a message runner, rides a bicycle behind the lines." She said. "I've got his job right now, actually. He told me to go apply the day he got called up."

Not really sure what you were doing, you reached across the table and put your hand around hers. "He's behind the front, at least? Where it's safer?"

"He's got to go up front all the time." She said. "I worry about him so much. Every time his letters get delayed, I think, oh spirits, was that it? Is he gone?"

You cast your eyes down and sat in the silence a while.

"I miss him." She said, finally.

"Yeah." You replied. "I know the feeling."

You squeezed her hand a little.

"Sorry for the bummer." She said, and you couldn't help but smile.

"It's okay. It's hard to keep it off your mind." You said. "I've been burying myself in work, and it's always right there."

She nodded. "Yeah. I was taking extra shifts because I hated having the apartment to myself." She said. "Of course, now I got to do that anyway, because of the new fucking laws..."

"Yeah. It's rough." You said, ignoring her very unladylike profanity. "It cut the wages at our plant by more than half. My boss put a set of bunks in one of the office buildings in case anyone loses their flat."

"Wow. Yeah, no such luck down at the docks. There's a lot of women desperate to make ends meet these days."

You signed. "This sucks. The last thing I wanted to do tonight was think about this."

"You fixing for a distraction too?" Minami said.

"Yeah, you could say that." You said. "I was going to go dancing later, actually." You pondered it a moment. Weighing it all. You were still so unsure, but the stress and isolation won out. "Of course, I don't have anyone to dance with."

Minami laughed, leaning across the table to look at you closer. "Now, that's just not true at all."

Fun fact: Japan invented the paper napkin.

Also, as Minami is from Not!Osaka, in the grand tradition of anime dubs, please imagine her with a southern accent.

Also, I love writing her.

1 Stress is not worth dealing with the knockon effects re: Yachi - even optimistically, I'd expect those to include a "pass a Social roll or +1 stress" situation (or something along those lines), and Asuka is not good at Social rolls.

[X] Go dancing, then take her home. (Vice Roll, and an additional -1 Stress)

Matsura deserves to be happy and if her boyfriend can sleep around so can she.
