What's so bad about debt anyway? As long as our economy grows at the higher rates than interest, I see no problem.
It is trade debt and the biggest problem is the lack of trade items for the two main ones so we have a more limited ability to pay it off. With max am and em this go around we need to take major steps to reduce our need to import so that we can start balancing our books next time trade comes around.

Personally I think instead of buying ships from Vanaheim we could tarde their creds to other people, who would then use those credits to buy ships from Vanaheim?

@Durin

What's the backlog on Vaneheim's shipyards?

We are doing both, I think the hope is with this ship purchase we can shift more to filling out the escorts with our own shipyards at which point moving forward we can trade vanheim credits to others to pay down our deficits

Alright, but what's the problem with us having limited ability to pay that debt off? Do we need the ability to pay it off? Why is it bad to have whatever millions of debt we have?

The trade levy is 10 percent. So yeah but we can pull ourselves out of these by having a massive expansion of industry. Large scale shipyard construction costs of Am and em but has almost no am upkeep. Forges will hopefully come online and keep coming online. The new tithe rebate will actually give us Am and some em when we finish it in 50 years. So I am betting on Durin to continue be a great gm.
We can barely expand our economy.

In the next 50 years we will build another and maybe start a second.

Finishing two and starting a third will most likely fail based on the avaibility of mechanicus hives.

We are literally going to a new area to expand our economy. Durin has said we will finally get the chance to expand to a new area which means we can start making new forge cities followed by new forge hives. Also we are expanding one small forge hive to a large and need to start work on the other forge hive soon.

If we keep a 2 percent population growth we will have doubled our current population in 40 years. That would help with a lot of our current problems. Also the trust will be essential funding our military expansion now with the new rebate. If we do it right we will not have to trade for AM next council netting. Still have to do Em.

@agumentic there are several reason not to go into debt massively. 1 it gives the debtor leverage over you. Which considering that the people we are borrowing from are Friendly or political allies to Avernus is not too bad. You only have problems if the debtor does not think you can repay. 2 relying of imports is bad especially for the fact that the reason we need so much am and EM for the military. However the new tithe will help with that. 3 it is a bad idea to go into debt massively because of you default that would hurt both you and the debtor. But they are willing to sell us and we have a good relationship with each other.

I have to say that I was proposing that stand nearly every normal turn scince the last trade deals and failed. The majority will always vote for shiny. The idea to save up when money is plenty simply get no tracktion.

I want to point out that expansion into a new area and building the first cities will take the better part of 50 years and only cost. It will take another 50 years before returns will come in/the investment has been paid of.

Additionally we will get no AM or EM production from it. For that we will need Mechanicus hives. Large Mechanicus Hives. We have only 5 orbital ones and 2 or 3 ground ones. Right now one orbital one is beeing upgraded to large for the next 14 years and after that it needs another 16 years for the forge.

We literally can not build enough forges to cover our current upkeep in any future. We would need a mechanicus moon (massive or even gigantic hive) for that -which we can not build or lack the knowledge to build forges large enough to make use of.

The idea that we can grow out of the dept is simply false.

It kinda sucks that Vanaheim is getting all the orders for ships while we have slips lying idle for extended periods.

We should find a niche for our shipyards.

How about Starforts ? Maybe we could use turn some of our shipyards into Starfort manufacturers.

Starforts are always in demand. We could even sell it to others for credits. The Trust might even subsidise some of the costs since Starforts are pretty useful defensively and even offensively in long term engagements.

What do you think guys ?

Who says that our shipyards will be idle? We have bunch of other ships we could (and will) be building, now that the the losses are recouped we could be slowly expanding our combat fleet and/or just building more Mass Conveyors and Skeid Heavy troop Transports for example.

A. Ramiles Starforts, like all orbital defences, don't use shipyards.
B. They are extremely expensive, according to Durin on Discord "just for some numbers a Ramilies starfort costs around half the AM that the Treust produces a year that is not used in upkeep"

So. what I hear is, as long as no one transcends into a God of Economic Idiots and start to wield debt as a beatstick, it's fine. And I doubt that anyone who passed basic competency test will, much less a Governor.

Seriously, for all our confederate structure, we are all still a part of the same polity, and trying to hurt part of your polity, especially a military part, when you are surrounded by enemies that are an existential threat to you is such complete buffoonery that it hurts me to consider it. And I won't even talk that it's our friends we are in debt to - even Vanaheim, if we were somehow in its debt, would hardly think of doing so.

Reliance on import is a problem, but then not having an expanded military that relies on imports might be a bigger one. Plus, like you said, tithe will help with it.

When you get into debt there are two ways to get out of it. The first is Austerity which we really cannot afford to do in the setting. We have a enemy that is competent and going to fight us in ways we cannot bring the full night of the trust to bear.

The second way to get out of debt is to grow your eceonmyband increase revenue. Which we can because we are expanding the current forge hives we have and building more cities. Also the new tithe system greatly benefits us and will actually pay us Am and Em over the 40 years it will take. We can get over these in the next 10 turns by growing our economy and population. Also in 40 years if current trends hold we will double our population to about 56 billion. Which will greatly help us in all things.

Yeah. Most growth is focussed on the orbital mechanicus cities anyway. But I am german. I beliefe in Austerity. That is why I do a minimal plan before we -as the players- will get in serious trouble.

We simply import to much AM and EM to let us continue spending like before. When the thide system start to gives returns we can use that to pay for stuff for.

Anyway. I post a new plan shortly. Still needs formatting...

I understand these but we need to not just grow the economy but the military. Because if we do not there is a good chance of us being murdered by the many enemies we have.

Thing is as he said we can't do austerity, in another setting maybe, but otherwise?

Still growing our AM and EM economy should be doable in more ways than just making buildings as part of it is the admech's insistants on no lay men making em. We do away with that and the area we can make am and em in increases significantly.

[X] Plan Minimum

This plan is based upon the information Durin gave us that:
  • Our military upkeep will further lower as we thite more soldiers
  • The completion of the AM forge in 2 years time which will increase our AM production by 2.8 mil
  • We have to pay a 10% tax on everything we buy (except ships, they have a 50% thite)
Its goal are the following:
  • Get out of dept with Nilfheim. They want so few thing that paying back the dept is hard and with a higher interest payment (they sell so much AM and EM that getting there is trivial) outright impossible.
  • Prevent to get so deep into dept with Muspelheim that we have to pay them interest as well.
  • Buy ONLY enough AM and EM to tied us over until we lower upkeep through increased soldier thite.
Important
This type of plan falls under the Austerity framework. We are already so deeply in dept that it poses a serious risk. Taking on more dept will have consequences that will hurt way more than beeing short on money for an action can be.
This plan propose minimal spending and maximal paying back but even so we incure a dept of additinal 1,217,616.5 Credits among the other planets.
We are so badly addicted to AM and EM imports that the ABSOLUTE minimum we need to buy is still more than we can pay back.

After taxes this plan
  • Sells 20 bil Thrones
  • Sells 6 bil Material and buys 7.2 bil
  • Sells 69.2 bil Metal
  • Sells 10.3 bil Promethium
  • Buys 18.135.000 AM
  • Buys 268.200 EM
That is enough to have a surplus. Barely. We sell everything we can which means that the remaining Material, Metal and Prometium are as well only a bit over what upkeep we have.

@Durin
There is a lot that goes into the calculation behind the sence. Can you spitball if this plan still produce positive yearly income?

The tax on all buys is not included hereafter.

Oversight? As in we have a nice guy from Nilfheim sitting in every meeting with the right to say "No. You can not afford that." to whatever it might be and we have to accept that.
Vanaheim does not have that or anyone else really. Why am I talking about Vanaheim well they owe currently more debt than what we are going to take on.

Yes? They own us 2,3 mil and we will take on without change to Vanaheim Credits roughly 1.9 mil.
Acuartly 1.8 mil only for going deeper into dept and 0.1 mil for cashing in Credits owned to us.
Or in spending terms: We spend in Plan Max 3.4 mil Credits.

Yeah no problem at all...

They are also over 3 million in debt to Muselphiem and Nilfhiem each. So you worry about being in debt too much just seems to be pessimistic to me right now.

While yes I will continue to argue for staying in our means we need to keep the military the way it is and most likely will even have to expand it. Because the only reliable way I see of dealing with Turoq is to grow the military to the size where it can both defend and attack.

That is with one planets military not doable. In the grand sheme of things Avernus will only play a smal role at best.

The fact that the Trust wants bee a 300 percent increase of the Hellguard we tithe is my main counterpoint to what you are saying. They have a ridiculous kill ratio against everything we have thrown them against so far.

Well that's just stupid. What in the world gave you an idea that such stupid thing exists, that Nilfheim will want to do such a stupid thing and that we even have to accept such a stupid thing?

Like, in the end, it doesn't help anyone if Nilfheim/Muselphiem sit on a mountain of AM in the palace of EM while Avernus can't afford to expand its military. Remember, we are the same polity, surrounded by enemies and in fight for our very existence. The whole trade debt is a somewhat illusionary thing, as is often the case with the economy. As long as that illusion is not overstrained, debt doesn't hurt a thing.

As elites teir numbers are low compared to what armies Midgard can field.
Yes they are needed but they act more like the single Catachan regiment in a Guard Army. They are great but never enough.
