So after an reading about the whole tech sharing with the Avernus civs I got to thinking that it would seem odd if there weren't any Avernus races that did decide to work on tech.

That gave me the idea for an Avernus race. The outline for the idea is that a sapient, slime-like minor psyker race comes across a downed xeno spaceship that wound up on Avernus. The slime-like race ended up meeting the few survivors from the ship with most of the survivors having been killed off by other Avernus wildlife. Member of the slime-like race upon meeting said xeno survivirs make a deal with them. In exhange for the xenos helping find new ways for the slime-like race to survive they would in turn help the stranded xenos survive by sharing knowledge on Avernus and it's dangers that they would be extremely familiar with as natives.

The slime-like race pretty much meant to be the RPG slime which usually happen to be the weakest monsters in most settings. Their main gimmick/power was the ability to 'merge' wtih things by eating/converting whatever they eat and becoming a psuedo duplicate. Example is if they try to combine with a statue they would slowly consume/convert a statue they would be able to take on similar qualities to the statue, like say they would seem to become an iron statue if they tried to convert to one after consuming it or a wooden one if a wood statue was consumed though it came with the negative that if they changed form they would lose the last one they had along with potentially the properties they had(think Kevin Eleven from Ben 10). This is mainly used for ambushes with them taking the form of inanimate things that prey wouldn't notice was them until it was too late.

It doesn't really seem like a useful power I know and the main thing they had going for them was that they could survive near everywhere and eat anything. Though the problem is that they are relatively weak compared to other creatures on Avernus and are 'easy' prey for the wildlife. There is also more to the ability that I will get to in a minute.

Anyway what the xenos gave in exhange to this avernite race was basic knowledge from basic math to basic phyics to chemisty. Though the Avernite race could not really take advantage of any of it due to their lacking a physical body that could manipulate things to a fine degree. To fix this issue the foreign xeno came up with a simple solution. The solution they came up with was to give them humanoid mechinal constructs that were originally toys and puppets the xenos had for entertainment. By consuming and melding with the constructs they gained the ability to manipulate things more finely thanks to having a fluid humanoid body.

Overtime the races lived together for several years with the slimes helping the foreigners survive while the foreigners helped teach the slime of what they knew and gave them an advanced education compared to most Avernus civilizations. Sadly due to the foreigners that survived not having enough advanced knowledge of how their tech worked(all the engineers died in the crash and the rest of the crew had the average education of their race so think of the average merchant knowledge wise) the foreigners did not have any idea of how most of their technolgy worked yet alone fixing them leaving them trapped on Avernus.

This also meant that they had very actual knowledge to give to the slimes giving them around 20 century tech knowledge. Over time the survivors began to die off of both old age though mostly from casualties from the wildlife. Before they all died they managed to teach the slimes all they knew and as a final gift gave them their permission to take their technology including their automated robots, vehicles and how to create more mechincal bodies.

After the final foreign xenos died the slimes changed as a culture and people. They began to venerate technology thanks to their humanoid mechanical bodies letting them create things for the first time which has drastically enhanced the peoples chances of survival as a whole and developed a deep appreciation for technology. So with their new bodies and knowledge they tried to learn more about the technology left behind by the foreign xenos.

Of course there were some issue that the slimes had to deal with. Mainly that the xeno ship would still attract a number of wildlife to them that they would be forced to defend against. Due to mounting losses they were lead to discover ways to use the more 'potent' weapons that the foreign xenos used. Of course since non of them understood how they truly worked they were unable to replicate even most of the xeno technology and their bodies both natural and mechinal were too weak to deal with most wildlife. Even the advanced robots, while their most effective weapon suffed from the fact that the VI running them were quite stupid and low quality with it being impossible to replace any that fell.

To alleviate the issue the slimes came up with the idea to consume/merge with the advanced robots to give them the intelligent mind of the slime making them far more effective. Issues arised when it turned out that they were unable to merge properly with the robots and ended up destoying them in the attempt. After the first failures it became a major goal for the slime to discover a way to inhabit the advanced robot bodies. Them believing it would be far easier to just find a way to merge with them than to create better VI due to not have having anywhere near enough understanding and to drastically increase the survival of their soldiers.

To accomplish this goal they went out into the rest of Avernus seeking out other natives with abilties and/or psyker knowledge to help them. Eventually they discovered some races with very promising knowledge that would be able to drastically speed up their research(they did try to do research into psyker techniques based on their own but it was slow going). Upon reaching out to said races however they found that said races wanted something in return if they wanted them to give said knowledge to the slimes.

The slimes not wanting to give up their tech advantage which they have been building for the last 100 hundred years after the death of the xenos were at first wary of giving them knowledge on technology which were the only thing they had of worth at the time they eventually decided that trading away a certain level of tech knowledge, enough to be of worth but not enough to be too much of a threat to them down the line for a long time. Say around 4-8 tech levels. The races accepted and the slimes incorparated the psyker knowledge into their techniques.

Eventually over several decades of research they were able to refine their psyker knowledge to the point that they were finally able to 'merge' with more advanced robotics. The psyker techniques consisted of a unique form of biomancy and transmutation which they incorparated into their natural born power to improve upon it. Though there were still major issues in that once they merged with a robotic body should they change form they would lose it along with the properties the body gained from the robotic form wasting the robotic body. This was quite a game changer for them since they were able to take on forms far more stronger, faster and durable than their natural base slime forms. Because of this they put far more focus in robotic bodies for their people to inhabit over the centuries.

After several centuries the slimes culture developed where it was completely normal for the average slime to take on a robotic form from birth. Their robotic merger technique eventually developed to the point that Slimes who held onto a robotic form/body are able to take on not just their natural form but robotic forms that they held for decades but only if they held the same body type for long enough. Once a slime took on a robotic form after infancy they would eventually be expected and encouraged to create their own body. Over the average slimes life span they would change bodies/forms somewhere between 3-4 times starting from infancy to adolecence to adult hood to their eldar years.

They continued to develop the technology of the foreigners for the next thousand years until DAoT mankind arrived for the first time. The slime who held an immense admiration and appreciation for technology due to how it played a heavy role in their history and uplift were attracted by the ships of this advanced race. While the Slime tried to gain the technology of the humans said humans refused for a number of reasons. Though eventually the Slime were able to come to an agreement with them by making a similar deal as the one they made with the original foreigners. In exhange for knowledge on Avernus and it's wildlife the humans would trade them what xeno tech they would be able to acquire. Though the humans also made it a part of the deal that the slime cannot take any human tech to which the slime agreed.

Before the fall of the humans the slime were able to acquire a large number of xeno tech of all varities though not to quite a large degree. Due to them having problems finding resources and materials to make certain xeno tech they once again decided to seek out certain xeno for certain knowledge. This time they acquired a form of alchemy that they used to make substitutes for certain materials used in xeno tech. Over the years several of the races they traded technological knowledge with advanced their own knowledge with some creating their own psyker techniques to work with their technology.

Anyway this is a very rough outline of the idea I had of how some Avernus races got their hands on tech. I had a lot more detail planned for the idea including several races outight trading tech with other races and how it effected them over the centuries. Have this idea of there being sveral technologically advanced avernite races residing in some parts in certain regions.

One idea I also had was an Avernite version of dwarves consisting of agroup Slime who seperated from the original slime civ shortly after the first meeting with the DAoT mankind amd gained the name dwarves from humans who called them that due to the forms these slime took appearing to be short statured apes thanks to their humanoid form being based on the original foreigners who were hairy and short humanoids(they used synthetic hair) while also mostly living underground and being good with tech.

Note that since they pretty much spend most of their lives in robotic bodies that closely resemble flesh(the orignal slime bodies were puppets and humanoid robots based on the appearance of the foreigners) due to the original slime taking on the form in memory of the foreigners with future generations doing so because they were based on the original so most people wouldn't have any idea about their slime like nature since they stay in solid form most of the time. I think the best way to describe them would be psuedo cyborgs with a fluid form(think the assasin robot who can change from liquid to solid from The Terminator 2 two except far more limited)

Anyway I had a few ideas for tech and civs but not sure about the tech idea and I'm dozing off as is so leaving it here. Thoughts? Really want the opinion of other people before I continue since I know that there are alot of things i should work on here.

I like the idea.

There are avernite species that do tech already mate :)

The reason their material tech is lower is a combination of wildlife and the fact that they've got their psycic powers offering an (often times easier or at least more immediate) alternative.

with the Lord of Change dead, do we need to keep more PDF at home to cover for increased casualties to Chaos psykers?
The question is: Where, when and how will the Lord of Change use those psykers? I would guess "Trying to hold off the Green Wave in the Warp", but... there are other options. And interestingly enough, one of the biggest changes the Lord of Change could do would involve removing or changing the Chaos Gods themselves, so dropping defense to go on the attack is quite possible, if a bit suicidal.

@Durin
1. Are things like the guide to navigators and eugenetics package still things that could be recovered from the Amaltheia ruins?

I think you are severely overestimating the use of Psykers in the warp. Alpha or no they are still in squishy fleshy packages and have minds that can be overwhelmed by the horrors of the warp. The main use of powerful psykers is in real-space where they can do lovely things like launch Daemonic incursions, topple nations etc...

Yaay :)

Kinda want to start digging through them soon, they're meant to be bigger than the Diepobe ones as I recall....yeah they are :)

Still got a few tech ideas in other areas...

@Durin
1. How effective would an anti matter mine be? We have the Ragnarok Cannon so we can make it, and putting it in a mine seems relatively safe?

1. it would be an powerful if expensive mine that still has a good chance of being detected and shot at without doing anything
