Shepard Quest Mk VI, Technological Revolution

How much production would it take to make a Loki?

Also, I never got an answer to my question. Are the repulsors on the Tiger swiveling or are they just pointed straight down?

Not entirely sure what you mean here. What specialised vehicles? Do you mean tanks?

o_O

How about a bulldozer/crane/digger? How is a mech the simplest construction vehicle possibe?

I wish @Hoyr would weigh in here, just to help resolve this.

I don't even know anymore, just got sick of things going round and round and incredibally screwy examples being used to counter things. In both directions. I kinda lost track.

Also, i think the two of you are using different values of / there. A mech is a fairly simple (conceptually, if not in practice) way to get one machine which can do all those jobs pretty well. Each of those machines is, of course, better at it's own job, and incapable of the others. This is an example of some of what was bugging me actually...
"a mech can do All the jobs in one package"
"but (machine A is better at job A!"
"Well, yeah, but it can't also do job B"
"but machine B is better at job B!"
"Well, yes, but it can't do A or C"
"machine C cand do job C better than the mech"
"this doesn't refute my argument in any way!"

A lot of the argument is like that.

i'm still not sure how i got drawn into arguing about the mech as combat vehicle, when my original argument was about it as a construction vehicle, goddamn arguing against several people at once is hard.

Oh cool.

Is it still able to climb 60-70 degree inclines like the mako in the game or is that strictly in the game only?
It flies. I'm pretty sure it can handle whatever slope it faces.

Because you compared it to a combat vehicle.

What a lovely idea. Maybe we should remove the legs from our legionaires too.
The only reason a Legionary has a human shape is because there's a human inside it. All our drones are decidedly more boxy-looking affairs. It might be worthwhile to have some drones with manipulator arm attachments, so we can do telepresence stuff.

Guys proof that combat mechs are totally 100% legit an awesome thing.

Imagine a Tank swinging around a moon. Silly and impractical.

But a giant MECH could totally use a Moon as a flail. 100% legit weapon. That much mass will easily destroy everything! It can also be used as a shield.

On another note, we need to burrow into a moon and turn it into our own base. A Moon Base. Perhaps later on, a Fully Operational Battle Moon Base?

Legionary is awesome because:
  • It is a soldier sized body armor witch thick armor and thicker shields
  • It is an soldier sized exoskeleton that makes its wearer stronger and reduces the problems of heavy gear
  • It allows a soldier sized target flight
  • It has no fuel problem
The greatest aspect of the Legionary is that it packs all of that into a frame slightly bigger than the soldier wearing it and allows said soldier to preform whatever else its speciality is because it can still use its hands.

Mechs and tanks are a completely different weight category.
Tanks are all around more economic because they do not have biological evolved systems but are techically engineered to solve movement.
Mechs have all the problems a living beeing has. Their saving grace is that they look more aproachable. Human sized mechs and their uses are long known in ME (The Geth).

And that is it. Economics vs Aproachability.

A tank or drone will always preform a givin task at least as good if not better than a Mech at any given size and the Mech will always looks cooler and more natural dooing it because our psyche is that way.

If we want giant mechs they are best used as flag bearers. To raise moral when they kick ass.

If we want heavy infantry mechs they will again be outperformed by light tanks. Again the only use of mechs or powered armor the size of Hulk Buster or [Centurion] would be to archive the positive feeling for the own side.

Again: A giant tank advancing or spaceship giving close air support is frightening but only because you now that its weapons are devestating. A giant mech advancing produces a different mostly deeper sort of fear.

And before you start with that they would be useless against the reapers you have to remember that reapers are terriblel advanced AIs that understand this as well. Our giant mech would not draw fire because it is dangerous but because it will keep the moral up.

Ehh...
Light tanks are pretty rubbish in their own right. Or at least, so every game I've ever encountered containing them would lead me to believe.

Technically speaking, Reapers are giant flying mecha as well. The form they are based on evolved for an aquatic environment, but they do act as giant fucking mecha when the time comes.

It's just that Reapers are both hideously advanced and use their form as a psychological weapon*.

Imagine having to charge against a 2km tall murderbot.

This in turn means they are less optimized for space combat than they could be. Their tech advantage is just so crushing that it usually doesn't matter.

As such, I think Mechs are in the anti-organic category. Or at least anti-Anything that can be intimidated.

That's a tank destroyer, which is a different thing. (or used to be, at least)
Light tanks are agility focused tanks generally under 20 tons. The M551 Sheridan was the last prominent light tank is service, now their role filled with IFV-s.

The Sheridan was pulled out of service because of its vulnerability.

Miniaturized Energy Weapons - Part I
Laser Rifles

Ray guns became a staple of science fiction two centuries before you were born. Yet in all that time no one has ever successfully created a ray gun practical for military use. Instead weaponology simply continued the long running trend of creating new and exciting ways for people to throw rocks at each other.

As thick black smoke slowly wafts up from the target drone downrange a wide smile forms upon your face. For you just became the first person in history to fire a true ray gun, and it feels good.

"Ah General, it's good to see you again. I'm glad you could make the time to meet me." Even though it's been over a week since that first test fire you still haven't been able to wipe the smile off your face, not that you've tried particularly hard. Still you do your best to maintain your professionalism in-front of the General.

Given that he smiles in response to your greeting you've likely succeeded, or he's just happy at the thought of whatever amazing weapon your going to show him CASIE isn't sure. "The pleasure is all mine Doctor Shepard. While undoubtedly expensive both the Legionary and Tiger have made the lives under my command safer and my job easier. I'm interested to see what new revolution you have for me, I hope it can match the one I hear you have for the flyboys."

While you are confidant whatever response you'd have had would have been just fine you go with the one CASIE provides; "I am quite confidant that what I'm about to show you will forever reshape ground warfare." Following that bold remark you lead the general over the firing lane your people had specially prepared for this demonstration. On one end stood a Mk 1.75 Legionary equipped with every defense enhancer possible. On the other was a table on which the Ballista sat inside its carry case.

You swiftly pop the lid on it's case and step aside allowing General Decroix a good look at the weapon. "I present to you the Ballista, the galaxy's first and only laser rifle. Powered by an internal Arc Reactor the Ballista is capable of sustaining a 1GW beam indefinitely when plugged into an appropriate cooling system, which can be installed in a Legionary weapons slot. Even without external assistance the internal heat-sinks are capable of handling a hundred 10MJ shots before overheating."

While to your untrained eye the General seems to be ignoring you in favor of inspecting the weapon he picked up in the middle of your pitch CASIE reports on a number of minute tells that indicate he is attentively listening. With that in mind you continue on. "If you'd like to see a demonstration of just how devastating even a single shot from a Ballista is we have prepared a Legionary as a test target."

With minimal prompting General Decroix points his Ballista at the designated target, taking a redundant firing stance considering the lack of recoil, and pulls the trigger to stunning effect. The target Legionary would be an impenetrable tank to anything other then your improved Pilums, and even then a large number would be required, or one of your Tigers. After a single shot from the Ballista all that's left is a smoking wreck.

The laser pulse went straight through the numerous layers of Kinetic Barriers like they weren't even there, and to a DEW like a laser they effectively weren't, and dumped it's full energy into the Legionary's front armor plate. While there was nowhere near enough energy to instantly vaporize the whole suit there was enough to convert a large chunk of the front plate into rapidly expanding gases. Those rapidly expanding gases then proceeded to rip the Legionary apart, leaving the destruction you see before you.

Even the General seems surprised by the power of the weapon in his hands. When he finally manages to look away from the wreckage he has a smile that looks just like yours spread across his face and his first words are "I'll take ten thousand."

As the title may suggest this is the first in a series of omakes involving Miniaturized Energy Weapons. I'm aiming for eight omakes in total which at 50RP per omake should be enough to buy MEWs outright.
