Now I wonder what will happen in this post-arc (filler) until the next one, we must make plans and reinforce the SLs specially Yuuki's since she is the one with a time limit.

Assuming we have some free time until the next arc starts in earnest I figured it'd be a mix of Social Links and stuff like visiting the SAO survivors that we had as an option on our last plan phase.

Also, what did Kikuoka wanted? a report?
Probably a debrief on what we just did, a billion questions about everything else we've been doing in ALO from our reports, and maybe to recruit us into doing more VR investigations for him like he did with Kirito in canon.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned that that free time was a reward for beating the arc before the last day, that was the 31 and we finished it in the 20.

On another note, Yuuki and Shiroe can cross out "Having an anime-like power-up moment" from their list of things they always wanted to do.
And Yuuki can also cross out "Doing something more impactfull, that helped many more than myself" from her list at last.

Playing hero was fun, but these blades never belonged to you.

I do think it's best for you to find your own way to be a hero Hiyori instead of just blindly copying Kirito. He would have never chosen the CHEAT route and that's why we chose Excalibur.

You casually toss the swords back at Asuna, who fumbles as she grabs them from midair. They vanish into her inventory but Asuna's eyes remain locked onto you. "Please. This isn't your life, it's mine. I choose this, not you. Even without Sugou I still want to go." She looks at you, searching your eyes for a glimmer of understanding.

You turn away from here. This has gone on long enough, and the SEED seems to agree with you, resonating with your wishes. It's trivial to pull a few choice elements out and onto the NerveGear.

We're done simping for you, Asuna.

To be just like the «Black Swordsman». To become a «Chosen».

I'm really confused about this comparison. Hiyori knows a Chosen is such a wide title that it can easily include people like Sugou so why does she conflate it to Kirito and so positively at that?

You're reminded of Sugou. With nothing more than the power of the SEED he created... something. Titania, Queen Mab, artificial «Fluctlights», entities capable of thinking and feeling. Is that the type of entity your Shadow was? Did you have one Fluctlight, or two?

You miss having a voice to bounce off of. She helped you, shouldering the brunt of ETTEILLA's Third Eye, but then just as always you came to disagreements all over again. You expected to fight with your Shadow, so why were you surprised when it happened once again? Is this simply the way your own inner turmoil manifests, another voice in your head, one you could freely treat just like an enemy?

When you want advice she's there to give you another perspective.
When you're in pain she's there to shoulder the burden.
And even when you fight, she's there to force you to choose.

Ever since the day you agreed to become one, she's only ever been there when you've asked for it, or when you simply wanted someone to talk to. It seemed like subjugation, you bringing your Shadow under your full control. But that wasn't the right way to think about it. You were your Shadow, and she was you. That was how it was supposed to work, that's how the Persona was supposed to manifest.

So... was it really appropriate to call her your Shadow anymore? And if she wasn't a Shadow, then what was she?

Yeah, Lux seems to be becoming like Teddie, a Shadow that's grown it's own ego and self-determination. Since Igor said we could always make another choice I'm hoping we can balance our Philemon options with some Nyarly options next arc. I don't want to kill her.

And who the hell is gonna stop Kayaba if not us? What, wanna faff around in high school instead? C'mon, this is the most exciting shit that's ever happened to you, not after you fucked up your debut with SAO!

It's a heady thought. This isn't over, you know it isn't. Kayaba's still out there, and the strange disaster ETTEILLA keeps alluding to... you were the only one positioned to stop it.

You... were going to be a hero.

...Right?

It's nice to know that you haven't escaped your hidden selfishness Hiyori. It's just shifted its priorities. No escaping your character arc.

As you approach the train station you hear a honk and headlights flashing behind you. You turn around to see an unfamiliar car, gray and completely nondescript. The window rolls down, and you find an unfamiliar face smiling back at you.
"Yo!"

You blink and look back at the car. Were you being kidnapped!?

"Uh... do I know you...?" You put your hand over the cell phone in your pocket, your heart racing a mile a minute. You vaguely recall that if you pulse the power button three times in a row it'll automatically call the cops...

"Oh, you, uh, don't recognize me...?" Short brown hair, square glasses, a fake smile, and a black business suit. It reminds you of Sumeragi, in that it was the most bland and nondescript office uniform you've ever seen.

Great, a new slimeball with his own stupid VR plans. I'm going to make sure you get nothing but scraps from now on.

Wait, Hiyori won over Robo-Kirito!?

Wait, we met Clonerito? When? Where?

Wait, we're going with Shiroe? M-my entire Tensura arc!

Log Horizon is simply the better isekai. As you said in your hidden rants the Slime isekai is just too bland to feel anything about and unlike Overlord it doesn't have creepy power wankers and war crimes apologists.

Wait, what do you mean we're not recreating Laughing Coffin? I had this whole damn plot outlined already!

You gave us the choice to invoke Ragnarok! Why did you think we wouldn't take that option?

Wait, we're not doing the survival route?

What do you mean by survival route?

I was 100% down for doing this, but no one voted for it and the path we went on was my second choice, so I was satisfied enough to not really try contesting it. Any chance of a broad strokes overview of what would have happened? Provided it's not going to spoil anything upcoming of course.

If we has chosen to recreate Laughing Coffin, it would have made our relationship with Asuna more tense, and would have made the next arc way more awkward.

General outline was:

>Kill Granze, only to find out she doesn't really care about being killed in game, offers to let you use Elves and Shoemaker as impromptu home base.
>If LC gets publicized, big media firestorm.
>Pito and M make appearances! Literally SEED xfering over from GGO just to get in on the action.
>Whole subplot about Gwen hating Thinker. Thinker could be defeated without a fight by basically guilt tripping him IRL, with an option to explicitly ambush him in real life in his place of work.
>Sakuya and Alicia Rue would be a big fight, BUT there's an option to get Argo on board. To play into the themes of 'traitors' if you build up enough momentum Argo would be forced to accept that you have the better plan. You can then ask her to sell out the Sylph+Cait Sith fairy lords to you, turning the whole grand alliance meeting into an assassination, by basically cashing in Argo's reputation. Argo would've been forced to choose between the rep she's garnered over years and helping you save the SAO survivors, would've chosen to kill her reputation, and further her animosity towards you but also having a 'we're not so different' scene.
>Going on 2Channel to recruit trolls.
>Mortimer assassination either through Sigurd or by just having a big human wave event where your goonsquad just blitzes the Salamanders.
>Seven more or less similar to how it was done in Cheat route.
>Didn't really model Mira or Hakuto's plots.
>Big finale when you literally body press your way through the World Tree on the backs of trolls. The vibe I was going for is trolls ruining everyone's fun kinda vibe. The rumor = reality thing of Virtual Worlds was gonna be understated, possibly even hidden, in this route.

>As far as the other routes go, I was pretty sure LAW wasn't gonna win. In the event it did the general idea was players going "ALO is our game, not yours!" and a bunch of WAFF type thing where players come together to take back their world from someone they see as a tyrant.
>Silica and Lizbeth were 'float' characters for me. As in their fates would've been dependent on route, in the LAW route they would've been allies, and you would've followed the Girl's Op manga plot a bit. I didn't have anything planned for them in CHEAT route so I just threw them in the World Tree. =P Sorry, no more deban.

>CHAOS was pretty simple. Join up with the Salamanders, wage war, etc. I really wanted to write Caesar Cosplay Mortimer, he's my favorite character who exists only in my head. Ah well...
>Would've had this big scene where the Salamanders rebranded themselves as Fire Giants, tying into the whole Rumor=Reality thing too.

Could we have combined the LAW and CHEAT routes, or any of the 2 routes together depending on what choices we made? If so what would LAW+CHEAT combo route look like?

Silica doomed to be the distressed damsel.
Her dragon got to play at least

I have to admit, body surfing through the world tree on a bunch of trolls sounds like it would have been pretty awesome. How many people exactly would the troll squad have been? I imagine that since the trolls would mostly have new accounts, they would need to compensate with sheer numbers. 5k people? 10k? More?

Hello, there's no story content here, it's just one big author's note, so skip if you're just here for the story. I'm planning on making mechanical changes to the next arc. Since I remain undecided on many things I've decided to ask what people think would be good things to change. To be absolutely 100% clear, I may not necessarily follow the votes, this is just sort of an impromptu survey to tell me what direction to change things.

PERSONA CHANGES

Okay, since we're going to be swinging up against dozens of Personas active at once, I'm thinking of axing the entire upgrade system.
The proposed change is simple: No More upgrade point system. I'll dole out the Release Recollections and the Enhance Armaments with the SL upgrades (probably Enhance at SL 2, Evolve at SL 3, Release at SL 4 and the final upgrade at SL 5).
It does let me be a bit more creative with Persona mechanics, and it'll let me somewhat balance things better. (Or rather make the unbalance more controlled).

This will mean that everything is gonna get a nerf hammer to an extent.

If people really like the upgrade system I am open to keeping it.

COMBAT CHANGES - PERSONA

I finally read a sourcebook. So as far as common dicepools go I guess Shadowrun is the most popular, and it has the added advantage of actually having stat sheets for guns! Which will become very relevant later.

Here's the main outline of gunfights in GGO.

First off GGO is a world of anti-fantasy. Magic and the ilk are unbelieved. Something like Persona is not out of place in a swords and sorcery setting like ALO. But in GGO? Magic is anathema and resisted.

So 'Magic' in GGO always fights with DISADVANTAGE.
You counter this by giving the system an 'excuse' to manifest the magic, which will primarily be in the form of guns. Which you will need to invest into. To tie in to Persona 5 Royal a bit, you could buy guns with fire decals to cause burn effects because of... cognition. =P Gonna use that here. So the idea is that in order to cast your Persona you literally have to load it into a gun. In ALO I just randomly gave you more Persona slots as you progressed. In GGO the amount of Personas you get is tied directly to your arsenal of guns. Buy more guns, use more Personas. Your spells will basically be like loading special bullets.

And regardless of if upgrades are being kept or not, I am going to balance out your current roster. Things will be nerfed to play nice with the new system.

COMBAT CHANGES - BULLET LINE

I am getting rid of Smirk and Once More. They were there when combat was just starting so I could resolve fights faster.

In GGO the main change I'm doing is something I call the BULLET LINE. Basically I will draw a line at the start of every fight that indicates relative distances between you and your enemy on a line.
If you fire within the effective range of your weapon, you do neutral damage with some bonus (ie firing a shotgun CLOSE RANGE means the enemy cannot roll their AGI dice). If you fire outside of an effective range you get DISADVANTAGE.

Because of this I am introducing INTIATIVE, as he who fires first often has the advantage.

COMBAT CHANGES - DAMAGE

Just gonna steal from Shadowrun. If your attack successes (live dice) > your opponent's defense successes your attack hits.
All guns have a minimum damage. Any extra dice is extra damage.
You can buy ARMOR to reduce the damage from gunfire. You more VIT you have the higher your armor. Furtehrmore high STR lets you buy and equip heavy armor.
Magic always bypasses ARMOR.

COMBAT CHANGES - STAT

Here's the proposed stat changes.

STR: Governs damage when in melee range. Governs carry weight, or how many Guns you can have equipped and how powerful they can be.
MAG: Governs damage when using skills (ie, magic bullets).
VIT: One of the two damage resistance stats. Also gives you ARMOR which reduces damage by flat numbers when hit.
AGI: One of the two damage resistance stats. Governs INITIATIVE and how much you can move in combat.
CHT: Largely unchanged, governs status application and resistance.

Open to thoughts and discussion. I'm mostly playing it by ear here.

MISTCOIN CHANGES

In line with the nixing of the Upgrade System I'm gonna change Mistcoin a bit. I'll call it MISTCOIN PLATINUM or something. Basically it's gonna be cheaper and less variable with time, but it will be the main way to buy equipment in GGO.

You'll also get it very regularly, with most if not all fights.

As this is GGO you can also spend money earned IRL via part time jobs or reports to buy cash shop items, but the fancier stuff will likely be out of your reach unless you really, really grind for them.

ACTION ECONOMY CHANGES

This is gonna be a big one. I know everyone likes actions, but I do need to carry a sense of forward momentum.
So I'm thinking this is going to be the change:

Extra actions will now cost more Determination.
I'm thinking SL will be a bit cheaper than non-SL stuff, because SLs don't have the chance of entering into a multi chapter combat encounter.
Maybe something like virtual action: 12 Points
SL action: 10 Points
Minor action: 5 Points

Although in Persona games it's meta to just chunk out all the combat stuff in one or two sittings then do nothing but SLs I don't think that kind of methodology works well in a quest. So I'm trying to discourage circumstances where it's just endless heavy combat/plot, followed by like 5 SLs in a row.

We will be more or less sticking with LARGER time chunks. Doing time 2 days at a time is fine, but if I can do more days at a time it gives me more flexibility in writing (ie, I can have one scene accomplish multiple purposes, fold 2 SLs into a single scene, etc.)

SOCIAL STAT CHANGES

Not so much of a change but more of a way to make things less opaque.

As Social Stats increase you unlock more SL. It's not like I have every possible option decided before I make them when I offer votes, but I generally have an idea of what you are good at and bad at, and price the decisions accordingly. Now due to the nature of the beast MASK and EMPATHY are rolled often.

Each SL is tied to a stat and you need to reach thresholds to max out SLs, which is the main incentive to invest into social stats.
And... well, I'll reveal one thing. It's not gonna be relevant in Arc 2...
But your Social Stats will be directly converted into your combat stats/avatar power in Arc 3. For reasons. Better grind that FITNESS, it's probably the most important stat in Arc 3.

These are just thoughts. Open to feedback as to what works, what doesn't, what needs to change, etc. Not votes per se but an open call for suggestions. Anybody please, even if you're a lurker and not a voter, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

As as the future of this quest goes, I plan on finishing it, no matter how long it takes. But I'd like to offer fair warning that updates may be slowing. I am strongly considering another quest, a Pokemon quest, though I'm having trouble figuring out the mechanics as usual. If anyone knows a lot about competitive pokemon battles PM me!

And finally...
There is something I've been debating. It's been bugging me since the start of this quest. I remain very undecided so I'll put it to a vote.

"Pete-senpai, Pete-senpai! Congrats on finishing the arc!"

"Oh... honorifics-chan. I suppose we've been through a lot together haven't we?"

"Of course! Hehe, you can praise me some more you know! I won't tell anyone, Pete-senpai!"

"Ah... but I did write a bit too much..."

...

"P-pete-senpai. W-what are you doing with that hatchet?"

"Honorifics-chan. I told you, didn't I? That this story needs some cuts."

"B-but... wait, wait, why me!? This is Persona fanfiction! I'm all over Persona! You can't write Persona without honorifics!"

"Nobody uses honorifics anymore in translation. Not Yakuza games, not even goddamn Trails games. It's just Persona now."

"W-wait... Pete-senpai I promise I'll be useful next arc! I-it's super advantageous! Real, show don't tell stuff, can imply all sorts of things just by how people use honorifics! W-why would you throw that away!?"

"You can already do that with the English language. And it's not like my audience speaks Japanese. I certainly don't speak Japanese. We're already using American idioms. It's called localizing, honorifics-chan, but I wouldn't expect you to understand. I only expect you to die."

"Nonono, Pete-senpai! You can't! T-think about it, if you change now, you'll have to go back and edit everything to be consistent! It'll be tons of work. Please, Pete-senpai! Pretty pwease..."

"Goodbye, honorifics-chan."

"W-wait! Put the hatchet and just listen! This is a quest, isn't it?"

"Yes, and?"

"Let's put it to a v-vote! T-they wouldn't vote to murder poor innocent honorifics-chan would they? SV-chan, you wouldn't do that to me, would you? Would you!? Please don't let Pete-senpai do this!"

For a quest staring a from Laughing Coffin member, there has been surprisingly little murder. Let's fix that. :p

Didn't the Persona Devs say in an interview at some point that they were actually surprised people managed to max all Social Links in a single run?

[X] KILL HONORIFICS-CHAN

Who could have killed Honorifics-chan?

Also, I was wondering. What happened to Yui? Is she just hanging out still in Asuna's inventory/NerveGear?

[X] Spare honorifics-chan

I flipped a coin and it landed on heads. She gets to live.

[X] KILL HONORIFICS-CHAN

As much as the way you phrase it makes me feel reluctant to do so...

Also, as for feedback about mechanical changes...

Stats and how they'll be used seems...fine, for the most part. Although having STR being tied to carry weight/Persona slots seems like it would incentivize cramming the roster with high STR Personae every combat for those who really like to min-max. You could solve that issue by having only Hiyori/Lux's native STR determine that, but that would raise other issues...

Also, random thought, could CHT also be used when rolling for, say, analyzing an enemy's strategy and similar stuff?

You also mentioned earlier that Nuke/Psy are more sci-fi elements, so does that mean we'll start getting Personae with access to those?

Cribbing from Shadowrun for gunplay seems like a good choice. Aside from the Bullet Line, will we be given anything in 'exchange' for loss of Smirk or Once More! given that we'll still have the title? Or will we have to earn it in GGO?

Other random thought, will you also be using Shadowrun's cover mechanics? If you don't clarify how cover works now, people will DEFINITELY raise that issue once we get into our first combat in GGO.

Aside from that, other changes related to Action economy and social stats seem...fine.

Although I am curious...given that you're axing the current upgrade system, what would Reverse Arcana and Heaven Break have done?

On a related note, when you say nerf, does that mean that stats are going to be trimmed for Persona we frequently used across the board in exchange for Persona we haven't used getting buffs?

Also SL for chaos is still 1 on info page

Thanks, I'll change it.

Don't make more work for yourself for little reward.

Well I am doing an edit pass regardless, so it's not more work. There's like... one scene (the meeting between Asuna's dad and Sugou) that might need some reworking since I'm using the honorifics in that scene to imply things.

I tried to research honorifics for that scene but at the end of the day I only really know japan from pop culture and google. =P

As far as research goes to, I'm making a lot of references to hyper obscure Carl Jung stuff that I think in hindsight wasn't really well thought out considering it's obscure beyond obscure. But then again... perhaps Professor Edogawa TV Classroom interlude?

Hey, don't take away Igor being Gilgamesh, that was one of the best brain bombs of the entire quest!

With Personas being tied to guns... Seems as though dual wielding just coincidentally ended up being the right choice after all, huh? Even if we can't use multiple Personas simultaneously, wielding two guns would at least logically result in faster switches between the two than having to holster a gun to draw another or worse, dip into inventory menus while under fire. Though if we'd taken the shield skill back then, I wouldn't be surprised if there were riot shields and whatnot in GGO in addition to the forcefields, and pistol+shield been an aesthetic I've liked for quite awhile.
