2025 Calendar
So, a few days ago I randomly got the idea in my head that "You know, it'd be cool to have a Persona-style calendar for Hiyori - tracking the highlights of each day and some known future events" so I started to try and make one. Now, since I'm permanently living in the 90s Internet that meant I had to try to do so with just BB Code. I thought I figured out a way to pull it off with a table to simulate a calendar format, but the column width failed me so now it's going to be a less cool version. Unless someone tells me I'm being dumb and there's absolutely a way to do it with BB Code LOL.
Update (6/6/2024): Okay, the fact that I couldn't get this in a table-like format has bothered me ever since the beginning. I still haven't really overcome the problems I outlined above but I nevertheless went ahead and tried it again. I still think it looks uglier than I'd like (why is all the text in the "cells" centered vertically? I can move things left and right but not up and down arghhh) but I think it's... passable. I did slim it down a bit from the old calendar model (which I'll keep around, at least for now and continue to try to update just as before) - I cut out the "Met [People]" notes for most days to reduce some bloat from it. Still have some ideas in mind to improve it further (links to the update where the day started? idk) but we'll give it a whirl. It's in spoiler blocks for each month because I ran into more width issues where putting it in a Tabs or Slider BB code block comes with a fixed width that is no good. On Tabs you can force it to be bigger but idk if that will cause issues on certain monitors/resolutions so I just kept it like this. Plus you can have multiple months open this way.

No problem, I really think that this quest and all the creativity and work put into it deserve more credit. Especially with all the 'Persona X but one thing is different' stories that dominate the fandom, I feel a Persona story that has its own themes and plot deserves to be more well-known.
Absolutely! I do want to give it at least one more editing pass because while I eventually settle on an arbitrary format later on (Starting with Met [People] regardless of chronological order on the day, etc.) it's a bit shaky in the early days while I figured it out and knowing me I'll probably do other little tweaks like maybe going through it and giving all the Social Links a shared text color to make them easier to pick out along with silly things that only I'd notice like making all Sundays/Holidays light red and Saturdays blue since IIRC that's how Persona calendars are colored.
Double post, but just want to mention I did my first/major editing pass to clean things up and mention that if anyone has any issues/suggestions for it, I'm open to considering them - whether it be ease-of-reading (One of my color choices is bad, the fact that I'm using color for something at all is silly, one of my ideas is just a mess, etc.) or event based (like I just forgot to put something important in your eyes on the calendar) or anything else.
I'll work to keep it current and may make other tweaks over time but despite my tendency to introduce mission creep to things I think I can't actually do much more here so I'll be kept under control LOL.
Finally, something I only noticed after I finished the calendar and checked to make sure I was still in line with the quest is that we actually lost a day. 5/16 (the recent Subaru hangout) is a Friday but then 5/17 (where we accidentally(?) attended a cult gathering) became a Sunday making "today" a Monday when those two days should be Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The one major thing I'm still not very happy with, but have yet to figure out a solution I like, is dealing with characters with an IRL name and game handle. At present the format I adopted was "Real Name/Handle" regardless of whichever one Hiyori tends to use more but it still feels a bit clunky to me. I considered, but quickly rejected, using the RUBY tag to put one as superscript to the other as I felt like that might make it too small - plus not doing that opened it up as a way to label a person's arcana (if relevant) which I quite liked. I only do that (and the Arcana thing) on their first mention. Afterwards, I tried to default to using whichever one I feel Hiyori most commonly uses (or did at the time, not that I think that has come up on the calendar but things like how she used to refer to Shino as Asada-san at first before changing to Shino)
As a basic format, the first thing I list is a Holiday or other major event (like Midterms) if there is one for that day - and in color (Red for Holiday, Light Blue for... anything else), then a list of anyone Hiyori met that day, then Social Links (if they happened) in Yellow, followed by other things that happened that day - usually in the order they happened. What made it on there was kinda arbitrary on my part including a few jokes on my part (like repeating the "Met __" and "Attended Seven concert" from the Rain meeting with "'Met' ___ and 'Attended' Seven concert" for the Crowd Brain fight. Or putting silly things on the list like getting banned (and unbanned) from Rain's Maid Cafe.) With a few exceptions I didn't list all the days we worked one of our jobs mostly to try and keep from just tagging them on to a bunch of days and bloating the calendar. "Unplayed" days whether the pre-quest early April or the yet-to-be-played May days are listed in Grey. Big events with known dates like Ragnarok and the ALO Content Update (original deadline) are listed as well.
The "Met [Person]" is also a bit arbitrary and I'd be lying if I said I'm totally satisfied. Mostly around our classmates. In theory I could have listed them all on the First Day of School. However, I agonized (yes really) over whether they should go there or when we had a more proper interaction with them. Settled on the second. So even though Subaru was introduced at the start he's only listed as "met" nearly a month later. One exception is our teacher/Temperance link. When I got to the TEMPERANCE Rank 1 day it just felt weird to me to say we only met our teacher that day. My in-my-head justification for this is that a teacher is different in this regard than a classmate. But I acknowledge it can feel a bit weird at times.

Tentatively PLANT 2 will be moved up to Saturday (TIME PARADOX) and then MANKIND 3 will round out Monday.

"That was unnecessary, Kashiwazaka-san."
You cross your arms, biting back the growing urge to slap the idiot in front of you. It didn't take much convincing to get the ICU doctors on your side, not once you pointed out he was jeopardizing his own recovery. The hospital wasn't in the business of confiscating property, but temporarily turning off his Wi-Fi access was well within their power. You think he actually pouted when he couldn't answer any more emails!
"It's a precaution. I can't babysit you, sensei, and neither can the staff. If you can't stop, I'll have someone intervene."
He gives you a tired, rueful smile. "I suppose that's only fair. At this point, the rest of the work will simply have to wait till tomorrow."
Tomorrow, of course. Doubt this man plans on a recovery sabbatical. "Please consider your own health, sensei. You aren't invincible."
He shrugs, clearly nonchalant about his close call. "I'll consider this a learning experience, a chance to optimize my daily routine to account for new... limitations."
"You can't optimize everything, sensei. You have to leave room to recharge."
"Of course, of course."
"And eat more fresh food."
"Certainly."
"And exercise."
"I'll do my best."
"And sleep. You really need to sleep."
"I promise. You don't have to fuss so much." Yakutani-sensei coughs, waving you away. "Really, I'll be fine."
...
You better get out of here before you start sounding like Mom any more than you already are...
SUNDAY - May 18th, 2025
Afternoon
"Woooow, he sounds super intense. Nothing like Kurahashi-sensei!" Yuuki laughs, chasing her pet beetle around the verdant vistas of Serene Garden.
"Yeah... he is. And he's not going to stop working." You can't help but complain, for a man working in medicine he was silly stubborn about not taking his own. "But what can I do? It's not like I can tell him not to work." You should expect a certain level of intensity in a professional, but Yakutani took it above, beyond, and then cast it straight off a cliff.
Yuuki's pet stag beetle finally crawls up onto her finger. She lifts it up, staring at the creature, watching it rub its giant horns together; antennae twitching. Yup, still creepy. "Hmm, maybe he's found something he values more than his life."
"Yeah... but dying because of work? That's no good."
Beats dying cause of a video game.
"I dunno. I've, uh, never worked before," Yuuki says, sheepishly. "Working yourself to death... it does sound kind of dumb."
You're in a park in Serene Garden, basking in the light of the artificial sun. All around you are families full of smiles and joy. Children run around the park while bemused parents watch with open smiles and laughter. You know they're all dying.
"When you put it up against life and death everything sounds dumb." Yuuki lets her monster beetle go. She watches as it flies away, thankfully away from you, before diving towards the crowd of kids around the park. "But what's wrong with that? If it's something you decided, something you think is important, then dying because of something dumb... is that such a bad thing?"
"It just feels stupid. It seems so, so... wasteful."
A guy who gets smeared by a truck pushing kids out of the way is a hero. A guy who kills himself by inches overworking is an idiot.
Yuuki's beetle flies around the park, and you watch a young boy pointing at it, the sight of the horror making him gasp in excitement. He pulls away from his friends to chase it around to the cheers of his friends.
Aside from the hideous insect, it's... a happy scene. But unreal. The vast majority of these children were actually those with such advanced dementia that they felt more comfortable in such a form. A happy dream to end what life they once had.
Were the only fates to kill yourself trying to achieve something in life, or rot away until you're just a burden?
"Yuuki, I didn't even get anything useful out of him. I have no idea how or if his medicine is even going to help you." Yakutani-sensei even promised to send you some research results of his, once he was discharged. Not that you had any idea how to interpret cutting-edge scientific literature. "I just don't want your life to be based on something as shallow as who you like more."
"Well, I'm not gonna understand the details. They tried to explain the disease to me once, but I think I dozed off when they started talking about microturbos or something." Yuuki shrugs, looking at you. "I trust Kurahasi-sensei, but I also trust you. From how you tell it, Yakutani-sensei doesn't sound too bad either."
At least it's not a decision you have to make now, Yuuki has a choice so long as she remains alive. Not that there was any indication of how much longer that would be, and nobody was willing to give you straight answers.
But there was one problem that needed to be handled immediately. Damn it, you don't want to play mediator to Cayna and Yuuki's whole deal, but the raid was mere days away. There simply wasn't any time left to procrastinate.

Yuuki jumps straight at you, the sudden speed of her lunge almost knocking you on your butt.

Argh, she's got a pair of lungs on her. Moreso when she's screaming straight into your ear.

"I am not missing the final battle! We're going to rescue a freaking princess and you want to bench me!?"
"It's not like I'm trying to bench you," you say, raising your palms in supplication. "Cayna was worried. You're in the secret RATH FullDive rig, who knows what OBERON can do to it..."
"Heh, I'd like to see him try. I'm gonna poke so many holes in him, he won't know where to pee out of!"
God damn it I did not need that image.
"This is going to be dangerous, more for you than anyone else," you insist. Yuuki was strong but she wasn't invincible, the fight with the Norn proved that beyond a doubt. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
Yuuki pumps her nonexistent muscles, firing herself up like a wrestler before the opening bell. "Hell yes! Cayna's just a worrywart!"
She might indeed be a worrywart, but it's not just that. She's worried about her own life, and the lives of every one of her friends.

It just all comes back to the same thing. RATH, this virtual afterlife, and the lone girl trapped in the middle of something bigger than life itself.
"Cayna already told me the truth. That RATH is waiting for you to die, so they can test some stupid Fluctlight theory. They don't care about you, they just want the research. They..."
It's all a morass you can't untangle. Everybody wanted something out of Yuuki... yourself included. Would Cayna be friends with Yuuki if she wasn't a valuable guinea pig? Would RATH even care if Yuuki wasn't compatible? Would you even bother to have talked to her if Yuuki wasn't strong?
She doesn't say anything, looking down at the kids playing around the park.
"That's why I went to Yakutani-sensei. I really think he just wants to help, even if he's killing himself doing it... it doesn't sound like RATH is trying to save you. They're just trying to copy you."
Yuuki nods, none of this coming as a surprise to her. "The me that comes out of that... it wouldn't be me, right? I mean, it might have my memories, but it won't necessarily be who I am now. It won't be me." She states this matter of factly like she simply expects it to be the case.
"Exactly. I don't trust RATH, you really—"
"But." Yuuki cuts you off, a teasing glint in her eyes. "You're not who you were when we first met either."
"Y-Yuuki, what are you talking about?."
"Hmm... if I had to point to something... it's like before you were always talking with someone else? Someone not very nice!"
The word you're looking for is fucking awesome.
"See! But now, it's more like you're talking to yourself! And you can still be really mean!"
Oh god, does that make you more or less crazy than you were before? Your mind has been more stable of late, your Shadow at least is more willing to trust you or limit her interruptions. Once they put me through that machine, someone's going to come out. It might not be me, but it'll still be a person. It will still be able to live, love, it'll be like my kid! Uh, maybe not exactly... hehe... but maybe like my apprentice! Yuuki 2.0, the inheritor of the Absolute Blade!"
She jumps up and strikes a ridiculous pose, hand splayed forward like a commander.
"Yuuki 2.0! Go forth and conquer the world in my name!"
"Yuuki, this is serious!" You snap.
"It's the truth though!" Yuuki sits back down next to you, a serene smile on her face. You almost miss the hesitation sneaking into her voice. "If it's me, then that's great! And if it's not me, I think I'll be okay with that too. Because there will be somebody out there, living a happy, healthy, and fun life for me. Isn't that enough for anyone? It's not like I've ever had a long life. I've been sick for a really, really, reaaaally long time, you know?"
Practically her whole life.
"So... so..."
She pauses, a moment of uncertainty.
"So, if my time is up, then I want to at least help where I can. Call me selfish, but there's nothing wrong with that! I want to help you save everyone. I want to save the princess! And I want to help Cayna too!"
And that attitude is how morons like Yakutani are born.
You can't understand her chipper attitude. Were you in her shoes, you'd be crippled with indecision, too scared of making the wrong decision, too scared to make the choice that could lead to your own death. "Yuuki... aren't you afraid of dying?"
Hesitation, a chip in the mask. Her eyes widen slightly, her lips parting just barely as words spill from them. "O-of course not. After everything the «Sleeping Knights» have fought, after everything we've already done, why would I be afraid?"
You're lying.
"I'm not! I..."
You're not going to make her say it. For all her bluster, for all of her strength... she was surrounded by death. She's seen her family, and her friends die. Over and over. Everyone who quits Serene Garden doesn't do it because of boredom. They quit because they die.
She didn't want to die any more than you did. And yet, she seemed so ready to do it.
Yuuki trails off, gazing down at the players.
You watch happy couples enjoying a slice of simulated youth and frolicking children housing souls more than five times your age. A family is picnicking, the parents and two small children eating food that you know is not real. A rare elderly avatar sits beneath the shade of an artificial tree, before disappearing in a flash of light. Perhaps he simply went to sleep. Or perhaps he simply will never wake up again.
Like always everyone seems happy. Serene.
"Lux... did I ever tell you about Ran?"
Her sister. Yuuki had no problems bragging about her own skill or regaling you with tales of Merida. But when it came to her sister, you know almost nothing, beyond the simple fact that she once existed.
"She was supposed to be here. It wasn't supposed to be me."
Yuuki rests her head against your shoulder, her voice barely above a whisper.
"They flipped a coin. Two twins, each dying from the same illness... I don't really get the details. But Ran was supposed to get the Soul Translator, and I was assigned as the uh, control? That's what they told me."
It was basic science, something even you understood. If a Fluctlight could be copied then it stood to reason to find out exactly what parameters were needed for that to occur, and so they decided on an experiment. And as with all good experiments it needed a control. Preferably one as similar as possible to the experimental subject.
So a coin was flipped, and fate conspired.
"Ran was always smarter than me. S-something about being born first. She figured it out. I had a really bad infection at the time, so it's all just a blur, but when I woke up I was... in the machine. And Ran was not. I found out later she threw a fit and threatened to sabotage everything if they didn't have us switch places."
"And that was okay? I mean, if there was a control..." Then Ran was likely subjected to the same experiment already. And from the looks of things, it didn't go well.
Yuuki shakes her head, as a forlorn smile graces her lips. "There were days I was even jealous. She got to be more normal, you know? She could log out, talk to people in the real world, and see our friends face to face. She didn't have to spend every second in the machine."
A bitter laugh echoes forth.
"And then one day they told me I could meet her. That talking might make things 'more stable'. I didn't really understand at the time, but Ran was already dead. They had already tested the procedure on her. We talked. Ran or... whoever she became. She... she told me to live. Enough for all of us. She told me she loved me. And then she died in front of me. 5 minutes before collapse. Apparently, it was a record."
Ran. The other twin, a life summarized in one line: experimental control. Whatever RATH did, it wasn't enough to save her.
"Yuuki... I'm so sorry. I..." You trail off, unsure of how to finish.
"Sometimes it feels like the world's all just this big conspiracy to keep me alive. Right after that, my condition got a lot better. Some doctors figured out a new stabilizer, just in time to be too late for Ran. Of course, everyone was happy. More time for me to acclimate to the machine, a higher success rate for the experiment. If Ran lasted so long with regular use of an Amusphere, then how long would I last?"
She smiles.
"It's a weird thing, isn't it? After everything, I'm still here. That's why I promised I was going to live enough for all of them. For Merida whose dream I stole. For Ran who gave her life to me."
"And you have, Yuuki. I've been with you for the whole time, and you've been having the time of your life."
She nods, closing her eyes.
"And now that I've been alive so much, I want to see this through. To the end. Because Merida would've wanted to be a hero. Because Ran would've wanted to save all the suffering souls."
"...And what does Yuuki want?"

Preliminary thought for fusion choice is to go for Alice Liddell. Kyteler may have better scores for MAG and CHT and does allow us to resist killing blows once every time we use its Enhance Armament, but it loses some AGI and trades Megido for Scapegoat, a trade that's not all that good, since Scapegoat is of limited use to us, especially since we decided to turn Shakuntala into Urvashi, which has access to Concealment, a better defensive tool than Scapegoat.
