[DISCONTINUED] In the Beginning, There Was Man (WH40k x SC)

Gave this quest a shot and found myself liking it. The title put me off for a long time but I was curious. From checking the dates, though, the last update was nearly a month ago. Is this game dead?
I'm glad you like it! And as Icipall and Shark8 have said, I'm in the middle of moving and am quite busy, unfortunately.

Edit: Also I have just fixed the starcraft unit size scale images. :D

Well, I've been gone for a long time.

Still working on that omake that my heretical computer decided to delete, but in the meanwhile, I've come up with some prototype power armour designs to get past my writer's block and to pass the time.

Overview:
The Experimental-01 Powered Infantry Combat Armour, also designated as X-01 Power Armour, is a prototype powered infantry armour currently under development by the Adeptus Mechanicus. In contrast to the various forms of power armour that the Mechanicus has produced before,
the X-01 Powered Infantry Combat Armour is designed for use not by the Adeptus Astartes, but for common usage within the ranks of the Imperial Guard. Taking advantage of new materials, novel manufacturing techniques, STC templates recovered from the Mechanicus Ark archives, and the holy gift of inquiry and experimentation given to us by the Omnissiah, the X-01 Power Armour represents the Mechanicus's first major foray into the research and development of mass-produced human-sized power armour.

X-01 Power Armour and its subsequent successor forms are predicted to greatly enhance the combat capabilities of the Guard by:

-providing superior protection and shielding against enemy fire
-augmenting user strength and endurance
-enhancing tactical and situational awareness
-vastly increasing user survivability
-introducing the concept or armoured infantry, infantry capable of similar mobility to regular foot soldiers, but capable of doing and withstanding far more damage

Comparison to Astartes Power Armour:

To facilitate the mass-production of X-01 Power Armour, several compromises and reductions were made in its design. As X-01 is intended for use by regular humans and for mass production, compared to Adeptus Astartes Power Armour, X-01 Power Armour:

-is less durable and damage resistant
-has a far more limited suite of auto senses available to Astartes
-features virtually none of the sophisticated on-board medical and life support systems found on Astartes power armour
-is less natural to use due to the lack of neural interfaces
-has a less powerful reactor, thus providing less power to the armour and its subsystems
-is unable to augment the user's strength as much as Astartes power armour due to the replacement of electromotive fiber bundles with hydraulic servomotors
-cannot use Astartes power armour modifications such as jump packs, Iron Halos, or personal energy shields

In return however, X-01 Power Armour:

-is much cheaper and easier to produce
-does not require a neural interface to access its full capabilities
-is much more modular and easier to repair then Astartes Power Armour
-is faster and easier to equip and unequip
-does not require high-end exotic materials to manufacture such as adamantium
-can be used by anybody after training

These attributes are what makes X-01 Power Armour suitable for mass use by the Imperial Guard, and while inferior to Astartes power armour, in comparison to the flak jacket and carapace armour used currently by Guardsmen, X-01 Power Armour marks a monumental improvement in terms of protection and versatility.

Design:

X-01 Power Armour features several novel design features that will be explained in the following subsections.

Structure:

To ensure that X-01 Power Armour is easy to repair and use, X-01 Power Armour is split into two components: the frame, the power component of Power Armour; and the armour plating itself, which goes on top of the frame. This contrasts with Astartes power armour, where the armour and power components are seemingly integrated with another. While the sheer resilience and durability of Astartes power armour usually prevents these critical components from being damaged, this is because Astartes power armour uses large quantities of exotic materials such as adamantium and high-grade ceramite. Large usage of these materials in X-01 Power Armour would result in the armour becoming prohibitively expensive and thus becoming unsuitable for mass production. By removing the subsystems and power components from the armour itself, incorporating it into a frame, and then placing armour components over the frame, only the armour components of X-01 are damaged, leaving critical subsystems protected and intact; damage to the armour plating can easily be repaired by simply removing the plating and bolting on a fresh plate, greatly simplifying the process and logistics of power armour repair.

Power Armour Frame:

The frame consists of an external exoskeleton made out of titanium which forms the actual frame itself. The frame is the actual structural component of the armour, providing a structural hardpoint to which additional armour can be bolted on, and a location where the armour's subsystems can be attached. The frame by itself provides little protection to a user, but it will still enhance a user's strength and endurance, while also providing autosense information, due to all the necessary subsystems, such as power and locomotion being attached to it.

Below the titanium frame is a layer of memory gel. This gel is commonly found throughout the Imperium, being used in everything from packaging to mattresses. The purpose of this gel is twofold: it provides additional protection to a user by dissipating shockwaves, thermal energy and impact energy; and allows the armour to accommodate any user so long as they are within physical parameters, preventing the need to custom produce each set of armour. Upon entering the armour, the memory gel will expand or contract around a user's body, encompassing a user's body in a tight, yet still comfortable gel layer. As a side-effect, the gel layer also provides limited medical aid; bleeding is stopped by the gel-layer pressing tightly down upon the user's body, preventing the user from bleeding out.

The frame is also what makes X-01 Power Armour so easy to enter and exit. In other forms of power armour, each piece of armour must be manually donned and secured, either with the aid of techpriests/techmarines or dedicated servitors. This process is time consuming, and thus, an individual requires a considerable amount of time to enter and exit a suit of power armour. The frame of X-01 Power Armour is designed to facilitate easy usage by allowing the rear portions of the frame to fold up and away; to don the armour, a user simply needs to fold up the rear panels and step into the armour. When a user has entered the armour, the rear panels of the frame will simply fold back down and secure themselves using maglocks and latches. To exit, the frame will simply fold back up, and the user will be free to exit; in emergency situations, the latches and maglocks can be blown off using emergency explosive bolts. Even better, the armour plating does not need to be removed for a user to enter or exit; this means that a user can enter or exit a suit of X-01 Power Armour in as little as 10 seconds, perhaps even shorter with proper training and experience.

The frame is the most expensive part of the armour, as it hosts all the subsystems and power systems of the armour. However, in comparison to Astartes power armour, the frame is still far cheaper to produce, and is the least likely to get damaged, due to the fact that it is insulated by layers of armour plating bolted on top. Additionally, it is made from fairly conventional materials, using no adamantium or other exotic materials; titanium forms most of the frame, locomotion is composed of hydraulic servomotors instead of electromotive fiber bundles, and no complicated neural circuitry is needed to manufacture it.

Power Armour Plating:

The armour plating is what actually provides the armour portion of X-1 Power Armour. The armour plating itself is inert, that is, it has no subsystems or moving components; it is a simple plate of armour. The armour plating itself is composed of a mixture of the mineral substance found within this universe (proper Imperial designation pending), doped with ceramite. This mixture results in a fairly lightweight material that is still highly durable and heat resistant; while not as strong nor durable as the armour plating used in Astartes Power Armor, the armour plating used in X-01 Power Armour is still far more durable than the Carapace Armour or Flak jackets currently used by the Guard and is on par, and possible even stronger than other forms of human-sized power armour such as Sororitas Power Armour or Ignatus Power Armour. X-01 Power Armour plating is capable of withstanding up to 20,000 joules of kinetic energy, leaving it immune to all but the most powerful stubber weapons but still vulnerable to bolters and anti-armour rounds. The armour plating is also capable of dissipating enough thermal energy to be resistant to most infantry-grade directed energy weapons such as the lasgun, but are still vulnerable to energy weapons such as the plasma gun, hot-shot lasgun, hellgun, lascannon, and other similar high-yield energy weapons.

As stated before, the armour plating is composed out of a mixture of native "minerals" and ceramite. The decision to use local materials was made due to the fact that X-01 Power Armour is designed to be easily and cheaply produced; conventional (non high-grade) ceramite, carbon, and minerals are plentiful and can be easily utilized. Using local minerals and small amounts of ceramite also means that X-01 Power Armour can be produced on the battlefield, meaning that on-site manufacturing and repair of power armour is possible in the middle of battle.

There are a total of 10 armour plates bolted onto the power armour frame (not including the helmet and gauntlets): four leg plates (two frontal and two rear); 2 torso plates (one frontal and one rear); and 4 arm plates (two frontal and two rear). The plates themselves are shaped slabs of ceramite-doped minerals which are directly bolted onto the frame. In areas where flexibility is needed, a plasteel-mesh covered with a mineral layer is used; this composite material, while not as strong as the armour plates themselves, is still fairly strong and resilient, while still being flexible enough to allow for a fair degree of flexibility. The armour plates can be easily removed and replaced with new ones; the plates themselves are not especially hard to manufacture, meaning that power armour repair is a fairly simple and straightforward process, so long as the frame itself is not damaged.

Power Systems:

While portable fusion reactors are available in the Imperium and are commonly used in Astartes Power Armour and Sororitas Power Armour, to mass produce portable fusion reactors for X-01 Power Armour would be unreasonable and prohibitively expensive. As such, X-01 Power Armour uses an experimental power design based on STC templates and experimentation into fusion reaction systems called a H3-De Initiated Microfusion Reactor. Compared to the full size Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactors used Astartes and Sororitas Power Armour, a H3-De Initiated Microfusion Reactor produces less power but has the benefit of being smaller, more easily contained, and able to produce steady amounts of power for extremely long periods of time, while also being able to overcharge the reactor and produce additional power for brief amounts of time.

The H3-De Initiated Microfusion Reactor is composed of two components: a fusion core, that provides the initial start-up energy and acts as a secondary power source; and the microfusion reactor itself. The fusion core is composed of a miniature fusion reactor which uses a brief but power laser pulse to initiate a fusion reaction using helium-3 and deuterium. The laser itself is powered by a superconducting capacitor bank, identical to the ones used in lasgun ammunition packs; the pack discharges all its energy into one intense pulse to initiate the reaction and gradually recharges itself once the main reactor goes online. This causes the helium-3 and deuterium to undergo nuclear fusion, producing a massive spike of energy that is used to fire up the main microfusion reactor itself. As a byproduct, the fusion core produces tritium which is shunted outside the reaction center and allowed to decay back into Helium-3, allowing the fusion core to gradually produce more fuel.

The main microfusion reactor is a Golden Age of Technology design called a Freeman Microfusion Reactor. The mechanisms behind the Freeman Microfusion Reactor are not entirely understood as of yet by the Mechanicus, though further inquiry into the design and the STC template are underway in the hopes that such a design could possibly be improved or upsized in scale. Regardless, the Freeman Microfusion Reactor uses a Proton-Boron 11 fusion reaction to produce steady amounts of power for incredibly long periods of time; initial estimates place reaction time as lasting for more than 6 decades before the reactor needs to be refilled. To start the reaction, the Freeman Microfusion Reactor requires significant amounts of power, which is provided by the H3-De fusion core. While the amount of power generated is less than that generated by ICF reactors, the ability to generate steady amounts of power for such long periods of time is incredibly advantageous to the Guard.

If the Freeman Microfusion Reactor fails, the fusion core can also act as a backup source of power, providing 30% of the power normally provided for 3 hours. In the event that additional power is needed, the fusion core can be briefly overloaded to produce additional amounts of power, though only for a short while before the core must shut down and cool down. However, even with this feature, power must still be conserved, so many features found in Sororitas and Astartes power armour have been stripped out to save on power needs.

Locomotion Systems:

To save on manufacturing costs and power requirements, the electromotive fiber bundles normally used in power armour have been replaced by hydraulic servomotors. The servomotors are used to augment the strength and endurance of the user using hydraulic fluids to greatly amplify a user's motion, but not to the degree and precision that electromotive fiber bundles would provide. Servomotors are attached to the frame itself at joint areas. The hydraulic fluid used is rated for operating conditions of up to -40 degrees celsius, and are kept warm by waste heat from the power system.

The lack of a neural interface and neural circuitry means that different means must be used to control the suit. As such, a series of crude electromyographic sensors are used, such as those commonly used in medical machines; these sensors are attached to the frame of the armour and come into contact with the user's skin, allowing them to read electrical signals emanating from the body. If the user flexes or tenses a muscle, the sensors will detect the electrical neural impulses and send instructions to the servomotors, telling them to mimic the user's movement. This system of locomotion is still inferior to the black-carapace/neural interface system used by Astartes power armour; as no direct neural interface exists between the brain and the armour, there will be discrepancies between the intended movement of the body and the movement of the armour, which can create difficulty in controlling the armour. As such, X-01 Power Armour users will not be able to mimic the seemingly natural movements of Astartes when using Astartes power armour, and a period of training is necessary to fully acclimate to the armour. Still, with adequate training and experience, X-01 Power Armour users will still experience greatly augmented strength and endurance; the armour will do most of the work for the user and greatly amplify their strength.

Preliminary tests have shown excellent results. Users are able to run at sprinting speeds for periods of up to 4 hours, punch through solid concrete walls, operate heavy weapons such as heavy bolters and autocannons, jump incredibly high distances, and a variety of other normally super-human tasks.

Life-Support Systems:

Compared to Astartes power armour, X-01 Power Armour features little in the way of life-support and medical systems to save on power requirements and manufacturing costs. The X-01 does however feature:

-integrated rebreather for use in hazardous environments
-integrated air filter and purifier
-hermetically sealed armour plating (due to maglocks and clamps)
-10 minutes of emergency oxygen supply
-external bleeding inhibitor (power armour frame gel-layer)
-basic waste disposal
-heating (waste heat distribution from power systems)

As such, X-01 Power Armour is capable of limited use in void operations and possibly underwater combat. The Mechanicus aims to improve life support capabilities in future iterations of the X-01.

Communications and Autosenses:

While the communications and autosenses suite found in X-01 Power Armour is inferior to that of Astartes power armour, the suite still significantly augments a guardsman's tactical capabilities and situational awareness. X-01 Power Armour features:

-integrated nightvision and thermal filters
-heads-up display displayed in the helmet visor
-compass
-tactical map
-vox
-basic motion tracker (good for 30 meters)
-IFF system

Manufacturing:

While the manufacturing of the armour plating is simple and cheap, it is the frame and the necessary subsystems that is relatively difficult to manufacture, though it is still far simpler than other forms of power armour. However, without the danger of the ruinous powers, chaotic corruption of machinery is now impossible meaning that the manufacturing process can be speed up, and with the Guard's greatly reduced size, it is possible to distribute a suit of X-01 Power Armour to every guardsman once the necessary manufacturing facilities have been set up; most of the materials and manufacturing processes needed are fairly common and simple, making production cheap and relatively simple compared to other forms of power armour. Even now, the Mechanicus is exploring new ways of manufacturing products, including methods dating from the Golden Age of Technology like the molecular assembler and the nanoforge (to be reported in future Research and Development Report), and new experimental methods devised by the Mechanicus itself.

Addendum:

X-01 Power Armour is merely a prototype power armour, and will serve as the basis for future versions, including combat ready power armour. The Mechanicus is already considering several upgrades to the X-01, including:

-upgraded life-support and medical systems
-improved logistical and tactical systems, such as optical zoom, aim-stabilization, enhanced vox communication equipment, and battle-net capabilities
-improved defensive mechanisms, such as reactive armour plating and PRISM refractive coating
-ability to mount modifications such as grav-chutes and jump-packs
There's about 5 or 6 things in this that are not realistic, but aside from that it's an interesting concept and not too bad for a prototype armor. :)

Just so you know, this will cost you aprox .5 WP to armor 5 regiments (25k soldiers) as described. Alternatively, standard flack + las guns/other weapons will take .5 WP to arm/armor 1 legion (100k soldiers).

Still, take a +15 bonus to low end power armor research!

Someone please stick this under Non-canon. :)

You are Lunk'ead, of Gorehowl's Boyz, and you are having the best time you've had in weeks. With the Brainboss busy doing brainy things, you and your fellow Boyz have been left rather at a loose end. But just the other day the Boss had a stroke of genius. You and the other three have been sent to go scrap with the Khan's boyz a bit, give them a bit of a different fight from what they've gotten used to. So far you've been knocked out three times, broken a tusk, cracked a rib, and been punched in the face enough times that you'd be concerned about brain damage if you had any brains to damage. And you've given as good as you've got, though the fact that there are a lot more of them and they keep switching out fighting you means that none of them are anywhere near as banged up as you and your gang are.

"Alright, time for a new exercise." You turn your attention to the massive Khan. Now that's a Nob. Not a Boss like Gorehowl, of course, but if you didn't have the Brainboss, you'd like as not end up following the Khan. He's bigger than any of you, and boy can he fight.

"Ok, half of you will be deploying in Section Beta. The Krork has given me several dozen surplus Attack Squigs and Warboars, and I've filled that area with them. Your job is to clear them out, and you'll get chainswords, plus any warpcraft you care to try. The other half will be fighting the four orcs in Section Alpha. The catch? The Orcs get training bolters, and you'll still be unarmed."

After collecting your training bolter, and a couple of extra satchels of rubber-tipped bolts, you and the other Boyz disappear into the maze of abandoned corridors and empty rooms that make up this wing of the Phalanx. The Khan is giving you and your fellows a few minutes head start. You split up, and soon are hopelessly lost in the tangled web of corridors. After a few minutes, you hear gunfire from somewhere more or less to your left, and set out at a charge in that direction. It cuts out after a moment, but you continue heading in the right direction. Left, right, duck under some loose wires, right, left, aha! Ahead of you are a trio of Chosen Blood, and you immediately open fire, the rubber-tipped bolts thudding into wall, floor, ceiling, and Space Marine alike. As if in response, you hear a third bolter more or less on the other side of the Marines. One of the Marines collapses as a training bolt takes him between the eyes, but the other two duck back around the corner.

You follow at a brisk jog, but no sooner have you rounded the corner than at least four or five marines leap out of ambush, and you only have time to squeeze off a few rounds before you are overborn and thrown to the ground. The Marines quickly tie you up and dump you next to one of your comrades, and a minute or two later a third joins you. It isn't long after that that they capture the fourth, and claim victory at the cost of three unconscious comrades, a couple of black eyes, and a remarkable assortment of bruises. Oh yeah, definitely a good day.
A little Gorehowl goodness, just as a change of pace.
Hehe. I love this! Please put this under Partially Canon. ;D

Gorehowl now has a chance every month to train with Space Marines. :D

Torr, you missed one:
I've been playing RA2 again lately and had a bit of inspiration.

The saga of Enginseer Kgorolovgki, part the third: guess what, turns out MCV expies hate titles too

Bang, bang, bang.

"What is it?" an irritated voice replied. A burst of static followed: [Ugh, when will these people learn to use the doorbell? Oh dammit I did it again. Need to stop canting to myself. Argh I'm still doing it!]

A series of binaric grumbles continued as Enginseer Kgorolovgki proceeded to the door of his workshop to greet the visitor. "Who is it?"

{Really Gustav? Is it ever anyone else?}

[Ah, Magos Garela. Pease come in.]

{Have you finished your most recent project?}

[More or less. Struggling to fit the soup dispenser in.]

{I thought I said that wasn't necessary?}

[With all due respect Magos, we went over this. Soup is always necessary.]

Garela preceded her next cant with the closest thing Lingua-Technis had to an exasperation glyph. {Gustav, you're impossible. Anyway barring the soup have you completed the project?}

[It's just around here.]

The vehicle was essentially a rectangular armoured box, clearly intended to split apart to reveal some concealed system, mounted on the back of a transport truck larger than a superheavy tank, the kind used to move finished components of Titans under construction on the Forge Worlds of the old Imperium.

[It incorporates much of the technology we gleaned from the Terran SCV - mainly fusion cutters and plasmatic welding tools among its construction systems and a hull built of their ubiquitous Neosteel. I intend for the production version to include some nano-fabrication similar to what the Terran Raven uses but that'll take time, I need to do much more reading up on nanotechnology before I feel confident enough to replicate it.]

The Enginseer uttered a few litanies and began punching controls on the side of the prototype. The rear box cracked open, spun on two axes and came to rest around the side of the truck, revealing a mess of mechadendrites and mechanical arms along with stacks and containers of construction materials.

[All it needs is a supply of material and it can rapidly fabricate any structure contained in its cogitator database. The presence of one these vehicles allows small bases to be erected in a fraction of the time normally required. Multiple units can collaborate to create larger structures more quickly. It can work with just about any material that the fusion cutters can slice into shape in a practical length of time. Operational areas are somewhat limited by its size but the big doughnut wheels have low ground pressure and I'm fairly sure it's amphibious, it's basically all-terrain.]

{Much more concise than usual. You're improving, Gustav. On topic, I like the concept, a mobile construction vehicle requiring only a raw material logistic train, actually building one is a work of genius. If only we'd had the technology for something like this before, it's incredibly useful.}

[Indeed. Now if only I didn't use up so many construction servitors building the Warp-damned thing, they seemed to keep getting squashed at inconvenient times...]

So what happened to the gods that Slaanesh ate? What about Cegorach, Khaine, and Isha? What's the state of the Black Library?

The Black Library might be totally destroyed at this point. Cegorach, Khaine, and Isha might be around in Ynnead (she has the ability to call upon their abilities with her psy rating) so it's possible some bits of them are still around in her.

But the actual physical constructs and creatures that identify as those three? Probably all dead. Isha might still be Nurgles basement waifu though.

By "abilities" does that mean their magic powers? What about their skills, knowledge, and memories? Having the medical knowledge of Isha or the martial skill of Khaine would do wonders for the Imperium should she incarnate as the Emperor has done. Then there's Cegorach who is just awesome. He tricked the C'tan into eating each-other and tricks or fights Slaanesh to keep his Solitaires' souls when they die. Having that level of cunning on our side would be invaluable.

Isha might still be Nurgles basement waifu though.
Nah, during the fight Nurgle was upset at how Isha wasn't with him anymore.

While looking for a few quotes I'm interested in I noticed that here was a special event known as 'Echos of the Future' that was "incoming" but it's not threadmarked and I couldn't find it after using the Search bar. What's going on there?

EDIT: Aha! I found the quote I was looking for!
While the Custodes are capable warriors, that is also all they know.
@torrmercury, this is false. Quite false. The Adeptus Custodes are more than just capable warriors, they are also expert assassins and politicians. They'd also have to be good at military strategy and tactics in order to cover all ways that the Emperor could be attacked. Essentially, they are as the Adeptus Astartes except better in every way, and the Adeptus Astartes know more than just merely fighting. From the Warhammer 40k wiki:
It is clear from their participation in the Blood Games-- a series of war games in which Custodians seek to identify all of the possible ways that the Imperial Palace could be infiltrated or assaulted -- that Custodians are trained in the arts of assassination, both improvised and professional, in order to counter possible attempts on the life of the Emperor.
Furthermore it is clear that the Custodes are also well-versed in the political etiquette of Terra, and have been known to act outside of Imperial law, to infiltrate influential Imperial noble houses and to investigate any potential threats. This aspect of the Custodian mindset is advantageous, given that the Captain-General of the order often shares a seat with the High Lords of Terra in the Senatorum Imperialis and this allows him to navigate the political maneuverings of the Imperium's various Adepta, while still remaining an awe-inspiring warrior.
Also, the singular version of 'Custodes' is not 'Custode'. It's 'Custodes'.

Ynnead has pieces of the other gods' souls within her. She lacks their memories, knowledge, skills, etc. Their power is able to manifest every so often, however.

As for the Custodes, I know that. However, this is not canon 40k. In ItB, they are warriors through and through (though if you want to be technical, assassin is another type of warrior) because they only nominally guard the Emperor's mortal shell. Their true job is to fight the invading daemons coming in from Terra's broken webway gate. Due to this, only the Captain General and his lieutenants are skilled statesmen.

On the singular vs plural thing: Oh. Did not know. Still using Custode because it makes more sense to me. Unless it bothers a bunch of people? Then I'll change it, but for the sake of continuity I'd rather not. :)

HOLY EMPEROR, that was GLORIOUS.

Best Primarch has revealed himself (well second best cause Sanguinius), forget Constantin Valdor, Uriel Mattias, Macrinus Solar and even Remus Macrinus, why isn't Golden Ninja Primarch leading the Custodes in ITB ? WHY ? Rogal Dorn, we miss thee, thy non bald head, aristocratic accent and glorious mustache.

Head canon established about the Dark Angels. They will be almost exactly like that in my OMAKE

Remind me is Dorn's moustache canon or not? I'm not sure whether it's an actual thing or if he's just commonly depicted like that by fans.

The voice that comes through your speakers is a rich one. It is smooth, like a finely aged whiskey, belying the old age of its owner. However, the voice's senescence does nothing to hide its obvious self assured power.

"Greetings. I am Malcador, the First Lord of the Imperium, Sigillite of the Emperor and the Empress. Before we begin our first contact protocol, I would like to iterate that any hostile actions against the Imperium will be met with deadly force."

A long pause.

"Now. Why is it that you have come into Imperial space?"

Upon the bridge, a growing dumbfound silence greets the transmission from the alien fleet. All of your men look to each other and then to you, confusion written on their faces.

English?

Are the information processing capabilities of this species so powerful that they were able to create a translation protocol so quickly and just from the transmissions within your fleet? And what was that other language being spoken just before? It sounded unlike anything you've ever heard, but is still familiar enough that you thought you could hear languages from Earth in it.

You name is Leroy Jenkins, Commodore, and ranking officer of the Dominion fleet. You are 34 years old and on track to becoming one of the youngest admirals in Terran history, skilled in the intricacies of space warfare, survivor and oftentimes victor of numerous battles and engagements against humans, Protoss, and Zerg. In your off time you are an avid gamer, favoring fantasy MMORPGs and like to stay on the cutting edge of personal computing.

Long story short, you like to think of yourself as the unshakable, badass commander that has a solution to any clusterfuck.

Unfortunately, you have reached your limit in what you know how to handle.

Time to wing it.

"I am Commodore Jenkins, ranking officer of this fleet. We represent the Terran Dominion and we are in pursuit of one of our renegades. We managed to arrive before they did, but our calculations show that they will arrive in... twelve minutes.

"I request that we be able to stay for the next twenty minutes, spread out throughout the system so that we may intercept and destroy our traitor. After that, I can contact my superiors and we may begin full first contact protocols. Is that amenable to you?"

You motion for audio to be cut, and when the comms officer complies, you start barking orders to prepare for hostilities. While you're more than willing to play along for now, you feel it is best to be prepared than to be caught off guard. You order the fleet to start scanning planets for a settled world, and to keep watch for other signs of the technological prowess of these aliens.

You send off information back to the Dominion that you have made first contact with an alien civilization and that more information will be forthcoming.
(Knowledge of a new alien race has been sent to the Dominion! No other data has yet to be sent.)

You are Malcador, the First Lord, and you are scanning the minds aboard the Terran Dominion Fleet. You can confirm that everything he is saying is the truth, though there are things that disturb you. Specifically, the intense bloodthirst that many of these people have. Had you not known any better, you'd have thought them supplicants to Khorne. Unfortunately, you are not able to concentrate on getting as much information as you'd like due to a need to focus, at least to some extent, on the negotiation with this fleet.

Thankfully, you are not acting alone, and your main goal is to gather "in character" information and stall, which their incoming traitorous ship gives you a perfect opportunity.

Minor Success

Unfortunately Ynnead does not do much better than you in terms of trying to gain information, though not for the same reason. She informs you and Adam that no one on that fleet has much knowledge, or much of a general sense really, of life outside the military. And even then, they only have limited knowledge of their own assignments. This is due to the fact that many of the members of the military are former criminals, have been mind wiped, or came from extreme poverty. Only a handful of men and women aboard those ships know anything about the actual society they fight for, and what you do find is unhelpful for truly assessing the threat of this human civilization.

What she did find out, however, is that they are ruled by a man named Arcturus Mengsk. He is the emperor of the Terran Dominion, a revolutionary that fought and overthrew the hyper-corrupt Terran Confederacy, and is seen as a hero to the people. Ynnead informs you that there are a few among them that harbor darker thoughts towards Mengsk, but you are unsure if that is a product of the man not being what he seems to be or if they are just dissidents.

Either way, she also discovered that there are other human civilizations in this region of space, the Umojan Protectorate and the Kel-Morian Combine, splinter groups and rebels, such as Raynor's Raiders, and a human group from half way across the galaxy, the Terra (Earth) based United Earth Directorate.

The final piece of information that the Empress plucked from the minds of the Dominion fleet is who the other dominant players of this end of the galaxy are: the Zerg and the Protoss.

The information that this battle group has on the xeno races is incomplete at best, and so you can only make conjectures as to the full dossier, but you know enough. The Zerg are very similar to the... Tyranid was it? They are biological hyper evolutionary lifeforms guided by a central mind rather than a hive mind. While their scale seems to be considerably smaller than that of the Tyranids, that is most likely due to the relative youth of the race.

The Protoss on the other hand, sound very much like the Eldar to you. Though they are obviously different in terms of biology, the First Born are an ancient race that makes use of wondrous technologies and is a race of powerful psykers, though the locals call them psionics. The little information that Ynnead was able to glean about Protoss culture points to a more martial and honor based society, which is somewhat different from the former Eldar norm.

Still, it would be best to just take this information in stride and start compiling a database, even as negotiations are ongoing.
(Information on the locals obtained! Some intelligence gained on the Terran Dominion, the Zerg, and the Protoss!)

Major Failure (Scan for Incoming Ships)

You are the Captain of the Burning Righteous, and you are in awe. The Emperor Himself has seen fit to grace you and the other Captains of the fleet with His image as he relayed orders for the Exodus Fleet. He has commanded that all the civilian vessels take cover behind the Arks and the Phalanx in case of hostilities, especially because of their precious cargo of human lives, and all Captains must make sure that their ship is ready for battle. The second part of His order is for all capable psykers aboard the fleet to monitor the Warp for any other ships inbound for Sanctuary.

When you relayed that the Emperor Himself gave the order, there were no men or women that did not do their best to make it happen. All cyro pods and other cargo were stowed away with the utmost efficiency, set aside from cataloging for a later date, and the psykers peered into the Warp and then promptly fell to their knees, unable to comprehend the "sight" of our Empress' glory. Still, they recovered well enough and are making an effort to divine the arrival of any other ships, though the process is slow going due to their need to avert their metaphorical gaze from the Empress' manifestation in the Empyrean.

The fleet, on the other hand, has quickly gotten into position, though it took far longer than any would have liked due to the damage sustained, but the fleet's maneuvering is thankfully not taken as a hostile measure.

Thank the Emperor everything is going so smoothly.

Your name is Corvus Corax and you are, with much assistance from the Mechanicus, calibrating a prototype psychic beacon to be stealthily shot towards this fleet and then attached to one of their ships. Supposedly this beacon will allow any psyker, or your Father or Mother, to peer into the Warp and "track" where it goes. Navigators will be able to see the beacon similarly to how they saw the Astronomicon, but the range of the beacon is quite limited. Thankfully Warp gods are not restricted by mortal bodies and can follow it if all goes well and the beacon works as intended.

You breathe in deeply, filling each of your three lungs to capacity before letting the air out, as you finish the last calibrations of the Teleportorium. This will be a delicate operation, and you are not your Father. Still, as the techpriests activate the teleporter, without a homer, the device travels through the Warp and reappears exactly where it is supposed to. What passes for cheers among the techpriests ring out, and you breathe a sigh of relief. So many things could have gone catastrophically wrong in so many ways, and are are just glad that nothing exploded or pulled anyone into the Warp. From what the techpriests can tell, the beacon survived the jaunt through the Warp, landed on exactly the correct ship, and latched on correctly.

A mechanism in the teleporter explodes, and you rue your thoughts. A techpriest informs you that it is an easily repaired system, though it will require quite some resources. You are not comforted.
(Bug successfully planted! Teleporter aboard Might of the Omnissiah requires .5 WP to fix!)

there is only one approriate reaction:

Welp, since it seems like no one is asking anything, I'm going to go to sleep. Anything that was asked over night I'll answer in the morning on my way to work most likely. Night all!

[X] Deny permission for Dominion Fleet to spread out across the system.

The "lack" of options is fine. What's disappointing is that not a lot of stuff happened in this update.

Still a fair amount of unknowns in what is going to happen next, but at the very least we have an idea of the current situation now. The question is what we want to do now.

The Gods are aware of how bloodthirsty and dangerous some of these people are, seems to be some apprehension from that. The officers in charge, some of them anyway, are at least having not so kind thoughts about Mengsk. This is certainly making the whole situation tense, because it's possible that even if we got the officers are on our side the rest of the crew might still resist.

I mean most of them seem to be either mind-wiped or loyal enough to the job because it's all they know and how they survive.
