Chapter 1: Strangers in a Strange Universe
Enter Stage Warp
You are Ynnead,
the Last Goddess of the Eldar and the Empress of Mankind. You are the embodiment of
Motherhood, Life, and Death. You radiate with purity,
Light and love; for you are (or were) a bastion of good in an Empyrean tainted by the depredations of Chaos. You are the
Bonded *squeel* of
Adam Kadmon, the Emperor of Mankind, and you have received his burning
Light and made it your own. You are the gestalt of all the Eldar souls from the Infinity Circuits of the surviving Craftworlds. You simultaneously old and young, giving you wisdom and recklessness in equal measure. You are all of these things and you must lead the Exodus into the new realm. To save Adam's… nay, BOTH of your children, and to remake your creators into something better than what they once were.
You pause in your deep self reflection to take stock of your situation, just in case it has changed. For the last few hours (minutes? days? seconds? weeks?) you and the fleet have been traveling the wormhole. You have placed Adam's soul back into his body on the Might of the Omnissiah to prevent him from suffering any more than he already had and you shed a tear as you think of his pain. Your heart wrenches in sympathy. You take a deep breath (or as much as that's possible as a being of the Warp) to master your emotions and refocus on the task set before you.
Concentrating for several moments (years? hours? months? days?), you call upon your power to clear the darkness of the future from your eyes, if only briefly. For but a moment,
you are a Farseer and you see a Broken Future. You see a galaxy at the end of a broken cycle, with a single voice in the darkness calling out to bring about the end of an era. Man is strong here, but fractured beyond all reckoning. The other two great powers here are far more advanced, either biologically or technologically, than man and we have few allies among the stars. However, there are a select few in this realm that can lead man to greatness, but only if they survive the coming storm...
You gasp for breath as you separate your consciousness from the eddies of the
In Between Place, unused to its strange and convoluted tides. At least now though, you have an inkling of what you'll be facing, as vague as it may be…
--------------------------
Time passes as the fleet travels in this strange… void? sea of threads? horrifically churning swirl of color? ...regardless, you have kept a vigilant watch over the Exodus and over
your b-beloved. The word spins about in your mind and you blush heavily, suppressing your innate desire before you did something unseemly, especially with Adam in his currently helpless state. While he is not longer in pain, he is weakened beyond measure, and your heat dissipates into to heartache from the knowledge that you cannot help him. Not yet, at least. As soon as you arrive, you'll be able to do more, but for now you need to focus on the protection of the Exodus from the almost boiling
In Between Place.
You blink as your thoughts are interrupted by a tremor. The [space?] rocks violently and you completely break off from your musings and create a protective sphere of your influence around the fleet to keep the ships from breaking apart from the tremors. With the immediate danger to your children nullified, you turn your focus "ahead." The end of the tunnel is near!
1d100 = 88 Moderate Success
The Exodus reaches the mouth of the portal and exits in a fit of turbulence; your influence the only thing preventing the fleet from being ripping apart from the stress of the arrival. You are in the... Warp? It is even more turbulent here than it was in the universe of your birth. You may have made a grave error.
You instruct Corvus to start preparing the fleet for transition to realspace while Jaghatai keeps his vigil over his Father and Rosaline provides spiritual support for the crews of the fleet. Meanwhile you attempt to divine the nature of the Immaterium here, being careful to hide your and Adam's presences as best you can. You then cast your senses out-- and immediately regret it. There is so much psychic activity here that you are surprised that there is no Eye of Terror. You feel multiple psychic gestalts, both of them massive in scale. One is far off in the distance but the other is much closer. There are also many other psychic entities in this galaxy, but you cannot see any more without revealing yourself.
2d100 = 84 -> + 22 = 106 (Minor Critical Success!) and 27 -> + 22 = 49 (Minor Failure)
Before you ease your senses out of the void, you feel a stirring voice at the edge of your perception. It is weak, but it is there and it whispers of vengeance and madness. You are disturbed by what you have heard. You retreat back into yourself before it detects your presence and block yourself off from any other beings in the Empyrean. You cannot let them know that you and Adam have arrived, though it may be too late for that. Still you must try to prevent whatever else is out there in the Warp from finding you and your beloved.
(-50 to hiding the fleet)
1d100 = 83 -> + 22 - 50 = 55 (Minor Success)
You attempt to shroud yourself and the fleet and find that you are able to make a strange refractive
Light in the Immaterium. You do so and allow the shroud to mimic the tempestuous ocean of psychic turmoil. You succeed, if only barely. It is extremely taxing to keep this up, and you must focus nearly all of your psychic might to keep the illusion from unraveling, but at least for now the Exodus is safe from and peering eyes. However, if interlopers decide to investigate, that'll be a different story...
--------------------------
You are Corvus Corax and you are currently in command of the Exodus Fleet. After your and your brother's recovery by the Emperor, you have both been placed within the Might of the Omnissiah, deposited at the foot of the Golden Throne, where you saw that your Father's mummified body was no more. You were gobsmacked when you saw that in its place was an infant. Though you know that He would grow rapidly, just like you and your brothers did tens of thousands of years ago in your youth, you cannot help but to chuckle at your Father's predicament. After the two of you have been introduced to the fleet by the Custodes, you receive an absolutely ridiculous reception of cheers. The fleet gave you and Jaghatai an unprecedented welcome and both of your very presences seem to inspire all those around you.
(Morale of the fleet's crew +1)
Though neither you nor your brother were present when the the corrupted Titans rampaged within the Emperor's Pathfinder, your Mother ("...how strange it is to say that...") had it perfectly in hand, with a new Saint to boot. It had taken you and Jaghatai quite a while to convince the Ecclesiarchy priests that she is who she claims to be, and that yes indeed the Emperor had taken a bride. An Eldar bride. Yes she was a Goddess, and yes she had a purity and Light that matched the Emperor's, but oh look a xeno, we must purge it, and by Father's name SHUT UP!
After you had a much needed cathartic release by intimidating the idiots who dared to question your Father, you calm down and question your own actions. You never had much of a temper but now, even the smallest things bothered you to no end. You realize that if it wasn't for the fact that Mother ("...still very strange sounding...") gifted you Eldrad, your absolutely adorable but dickish Gyrinx, you would have definitely lashed out far more than you have already. This is definitely a problem you need to take care of soon.
(Ravaged: Your long vigil in the Immaterium has ravaged your body beyond belief. You have fought endlessly for the first 9 thousand years before finally falling to a Daemon Prince of Tzeench. From there on you were tortured endlessly, suffering untold horrors and pain that would break lesser men. Though your body has been broken and is reduced to a wreck of a man, your mind and soul are still strong and pure... Or so you thought. It seems that you have a hair trigger temper now, and who knows how else your time on that daemonworld affected you?)
Regardless, you get into contact with Aurora while Ynnead sent Jaghatai off to care for Father. While the Custodes are capable warriors, that is also all they know. At least Jaghatai is a more well rounded individual, for you remember that he would personally care for the steeds that he rode back on his homeworld and off it, though that was much more rare. While he may be rough, you trust him to care for Father while he is unable to look after himself.
You decide that speaking to Aurora, compared to your brother, is like speaking to an angel from the old Terran legends that you've read. Her voice is melodic, soothing and graceful, filled with a powerful conviction and righteousness that briefly bathes your soul with a cleansing
Light, reminiscent of your Mother's but with the personal touch of Aurora's own inspired presence. The
Light fades and you feel a thousand times better than you had before, though you know it will not last for long without active treatment. Refocusing, you and the Living Saint take command of the Fleet and work to keep it together. The former commanders, while not incompetent, are relieved that someone of your stature is taking command of such an important task.
Once you get to work, you can immediately tell that Aurora is intelligent and adaptive to any situation that may arise. You are intrigued by her and feel that the two of you will get along very well in the future. But, there will be time for such things later, because now you must exit the Warp while Mother ("...still strange...") maintains the shroud.
1d20 = 15 Moderate Success!
Choice Made: System is Occupied
1d50 = 1 CRITICAL FAILURE!
With such turbulent conditions in the Empyrean, entering and exiting proves to be a much more difficult proposition. You find that your ships are no longer able to just rip open a hole in the fabric of the Materium, but that you need to actually charge your warp drives to do so without any potential damage. The tempestuous ocean that is the Warp hates mankind with the burning passion of a thousand suns no matter where you go it seems. Regardless, you have found a way to safely cross the border to and from the Immaterium, and thus you order the Arks to open the way to realspace.
The portal opens and you order a probe sent out. An hour later you receive word that by pure luck, you have landed in a system filled with mineral rich asteroids orbiting around a
class-K main sequence star. While it will be tricky in the extreme to find a place for the larger ships (not to mention the Phalanx) to fit within the system without constantly overloading the void shields from massive asteroid impacts and stellar debris, the system is as good a place as any to settle down in. The only down side is that there are no planets around this star, only ungodly amounts of asteroids, gas, and stellar dust.
Interestingly enough, it also seems that you are not alone in this system because right before the probe crossed the threshold back into the Warp, it picks up a weak broadcast on its vox-caster. Although you cannot hear anything coherent from it, you do notice that there is some sort of pattern in the static. You pass on the broadcast to the Mechanicus to see if they can many any sense of it while you turn your attention to the rest of the Exodus.
What do you do?
[] Blast some of the asteroids nearby to create a space for the fleet to "park" within the asteroid field. (Greater defensive position within the system, ease of access of mineral rich asteroids, high risk of ships taking damage from overloaded void shields, somewhat hard to make an emergency transition into the Warp without damage)
[] Blast some of the asteroids nearby to create a path for the fleet to get out of and above the asteroid field (Bad defensive position within the system, somewhat harder to access mineral rich asteroids, no risk of ship damage, very easy to make an emergency transition into the Warp without damage)
[] "Park" the fleet in the Warp and make occasional trips out into the asteroid field to get materials. (Greatest defensive position within the system, access to mineral rich asteroids is one open portal away, some risk of ship damage from an extraordinarily tumultuous Warp, high risk of drifting from from the system into open space due to the nature of the Warp)
[] Try to find another system?
[] Write-in?
Also of importance is whether or not you start waking at least some of those in cryosleep. While it's not strictly necessary to do so, a boost in your crew numbers may be warranted, especially if you want to set up base here. Unfortunately, food is a limited resource and while we have enough to last the skeleton crew that we've been using for the next year, it will not last nearly as long with an increase to the number of mouths to feed.
What should you do?
[] Make due with your current numbers. (No increase in active population, no increase in food expenditure)
[] Wake some people up. (Increase active population by half, increases work force capability by 1.5 times, food expenditure rises)
[] Wake as many people up as possible without overcrowding. (Doubles active population and increases work force capability by 3 times, food expenditure rises greatly)
[] Write-in?
(Current work force capability with skeleton crew is rated at 3 work points or WP)
(Food stock is currently rated at 39 million units and used at a rate of 1 per person per month)
(QM's note: Work force and food stock is currently a temporary solution and may be revamped as the game progresses)
Now that you've decided on how much population to awaken, how should you handle your work force?
[] Focus on manufacturing (You are able to produce industrial and war machines for various purposes)
[] Focus on hydro/aeroponics (You are able to grow your current food stock)
[] Focus on
science The Quest for Knowledge (You are able to perform research)
[] Split your attention between two or more focuses (Capability in each but the amount of WP available is reduced by 20% for each focus you take due to inefficiencies in space management in multi-configurations)
-[] What focuses?
[] Write-in?
--------------------------
You are Jaghatai Khan and as your brother and the Saint prepare the fleet for anchoring, you are caring for your Father as he cannot care for himself. Though you know that his infantile form is temporary and should last no more than 10 or so years, much like your own rapid growth during childhood, you find it rather entertaining that your almighty Father has been reduced to this state. That's not to say that you respect him any less, but feeding him from a bottle and changing his diapers really give you a new perspective on things. The fact that he is able to glare at you tells you that he is most definitely not amused at the loss of control over his own bodily functions, but you care not, for this amuses you to no end.
Amusement aside, your ("...Mother? I guess...") has also manifested herself by Father's side. You know that the strain oh her is great, especially as she is still maintaining the shroud around the fleet, but your twin hearts melt at the sight of her devotion.
She has informed you that He has taken grave wounds to his psychic self and must thus remain in his own body to prevent more damage and to heal. Ynnead has decided to take his psychic healing upon Herself while you are to care for His physical self. Before leaving you to your work, She smiles at you with amusement dancing in Her eyes and sings,
"I hope you're having fun with your Father because you may need to prepare for another one soon!~"
You dare not ask what she meant.
--------------------------
You are Ynnead and you must help Adam in his healing! How do you do so? (You cannot take any healing actions unless the fleet is out of the Warp, otherwise you must maintain the shroud)
[]
Sing to Him so that He may meditate and rediscover His center. This will help rebalance his soul.
[]
*heavy blushing* M-make L-love~ to Adam (in your psychic manifestations in the Empyrean of course) so that your emotions and essences will entwine. This will help in fighting off the Chaos taint and in regaining His soul's purity.
[]
Link your minds so that He may learn more of you as you do of Him. This will shield Adam and allow Him to rebuild his Bulwark.
[]
Cuddle!~Embrace Him so that the
Light of His soul may brighten and shine again from your comfort.
[] Nothing for now. Allow
your b-beloved to recover on His own for now. While you'd love to help, Adam can take care of himself and you need to take care of something else of immediate importance to the Exodus.
-[] Maintain the shroud
-[] Something else?
