Honestly, the way I handle things, it's a matter of (spiritual) geography more than any other factor.

The Thousand Hells are patchwork realms ruled by spirits of dire power. The Yama Kings tore chunks out of the Spirit World and the Underworld, kludged those chunks together and mortared them with thousands of years worth of tormented souls.
So it would make sense to have Yama Kings all over the world and inspired by different demon myths make the Hungry Dead not related to Asian culture at all expect for the fact that Ku-Jin in Asia have Asian influenced demons

Yeah and even then not all the splats in relentless age is based on Asian mythology. One of them is explicitly based on Abrahamic religion.


The Eastern Road of Heaven: Chosen of God

No one said it is an easy thing to follow God. Yes, the drinking of blood is unquestionably haram– but so is alcohol, yet the great Sufist poets were probably not being metaphorical when they wrote about the pleasures of wine. And of the five prayers required by the faith, two are during the day; who is so anointed among the Hungry Dead that they will rise and perform them? Truly, we all have failings– But what really matters, say the Chosen of God, is that they create a world where the faithful can improve.

To the followers of the Eastern Road of Heaven, God the All-Merciful has plucked them– the most imperfect, flawed and undeserving– from the suffering of hell, in order to undertake a holy mission: They must defend the human faith from threats that humans do not understand and cannot fight, challenges that they have little hope of overcoming without the help of monsters. The Chosen of God protect the garden of Islam and allow it to prosper, and at the end of a long and difficult road, it is said that the most dutiful will join God's side in heaven, to stand in the light among the virtuous.

When the Cainite Road of Heaven began to wane in Europe was approximately when the Eastern Road of Heaven began to come into its own. This makes it technically one of the youngest ways of enlightenment for the Hungry Dead, though the Chosen would never countenance being called a "Dharma." The spiritual practices of unbelievers automatically mark them as creatures of temptation and darkness, theoretically to be converted or destroyed on principle… But in actuality, the Chosen more often opt for begrudging tolerance and control of other Hungry Dead, rather than zealotry and crusading. It's a hard world out there, after all, with many worse monsters to bear.
 
I really want to see a ToC for this book, if the preview material has a screenshot.

I'm not really up to date with rpg lingo so I don't know what ToC means. Unless it's legal stuff like terms and conditions or something like that then no luck since legal stuff is on the back of the book and the preview shows the first 38 pages or so (sans the title page).
 
Greeterlings everyone, I hopped in for some clarification on things cause by rapturous acclaim of my game group they want to give Mage 20 a shot, and despite being more familiar with Awakening they really wanna do Ascension, and as always I am the one running. So going through it and the *basic* crunch is more or less comprehensible, and the Magic rules I can grok after tilting my head a little bit for the most part, but the main thing that's making me go 'So what do you actually do?' is Rotes, what are they in an Ascension context? What are their mechanical uses? Are there any mechanical uses? Or at least the M20 context cause some superficial poking around tells me they were rather changed from the jump from prior editions to M20.

Mechanically, rotes don't do anything. My group has some benefits for them, but that's homebrew. However, they do give you a reference list of things you can do that you've already talked about with the GM, which is useful because in my experience you need to adjudicate things a lot in mage--establish how many base successes something requires, establish what spheres are needed at what ratings, et cetera. With rotes you can skip that and just roll.
 
I finally was able to play Bloodlines and while it's a akward but fun game the racist elements are yuck.

The whole Ku-jin and Chinatown area is filled with yellow peril and orientalist stereotypes. With Ming Xiao being a stereotype of the seductive and cunning "dragon lady" here to ruin white Kindred society. It even has (spoilers for a twenty year game) Lacroix discovered to have been working with the Kuei-Jin

The Chinatown part was rushed as shit and uncompleted. But we never meet a friendly Ku-jin that's dislikes Ming Xio like the Anarchs dislike Lacroix or is willing to coexist with Cainites.

While still racist I think having a ally Kuei-jin who does not want the Cainites and Kuei-jin society to fight and allies with a nicer player would be good

Actually I remember the clan quest mod actually having a Kuei-jin companion called Kalliyan and well here's what she has to say about Ming Xio.

If an elder... that's Ming Xiao, proves to be a corrupt bitch, which she has, then basically I don't have to do what she says anymore! In this case, it's this under the table deal she's been cutting with the enemy: that's you. If she can play politics with the westerners, then surely I can afford a night of dancing with your kind!

Good thing the mods help to fix issues with Bloodlines.

It seems that Bloodlines fans do not like if you criticize the game for its issues.

Like how you as a male character can't seduce other men.

Honestly, the more I reread CofD - and recently D&D 3.5e - the more I appreciate how well-written and well-designed Deviant: the Renegades is. Which it should be given the devs had like ten gamelines and nearly twenty years of writing for CofD alone, but it really does have solid themes and none of the systems are overly complicated.

Also god I'm still salty about how poorly edited and written some of the late 2e products were. Whoever formatted the Haunt system in GtSe 2e needs to be waterboarded in the Ocean of Fragments.

Yeah and lobotomy copration is basically a wyld aligned Pentex. Like the extraction department is basically mass-producing Wyld equivalent of Famori and have some unfortunate agents poke at and risking horrible death for that sweet Enkephalin.

And of course, the goal of the whole point of the Seed of Light plan is to cure the "Dease of the Mind" that implicitly make the City's citizens content with they crappy situation, bringing a bit of dynamism to the static world of the city.

So reading through the pre-layout preview copy of WtE I've noticed that the relationship between the two factions split into (the eastern and western Concordat) are much more civil relation ship than frankly any other such relationship across the WOD gamelines. Due to the fact that both faction actually try to conduct diplomacy before killing each other.

Like despite the fact that the glass walkers left the eastern concordat due to ideological differences. They still at least try to play the mediator between two factions despite the some bad blood with at eastcon.

Concordat, both in opposition to the Eastcons' willingness to
work with the Hearthbound, and to shift the Overton
Window away from the Red Talons, who they believed
were close to pushing the Westcons to violent extremism. Of
the Westcon tribes, the Glass Walkers still maintain the best
relations with this faction, often bridging the communication
gap.

Eastcons believe that the entropic aspect of the Triat
must exist to allow for healthy ends within the Gaian Realm
and the Umbra. The Weaver's webs have driven the Wyrm
mad with pain, changing his nature to corruption and decay.
This taint prevents the Wyld from recycling what remains
into new creations for the Weaver to form and fashion
