Kurt:

Seeing the younger boy disappear within the trees, Kurt moved to sit next to Blossom, resting his legs for a bit. In the evening light, the way that the wheat fields abruptly changed into a forest was quite scenic.

It was quite peaceful, he found. The only sounds he could make out were the rustling of his movement, Blossom's soft breathing as she slept, what sounded like the cries of ordinary animals, and the occasional gust that rustled the leaves on the trees and the stalks of wheat. It was tempting to follow Blossom's example, and rest his eyes, but he knew better. Just because the forest seemed safe, that didn't mean it was safe. He wasn't sure about his own ability to fight off a monster, and Blossom probably wouldn't be much help in that regard either, but he was confident he could fend them off long enough for Sam to get back.

Speaking of Sam… he was the reason that Kurt couldn't be sure about his combat skills. He certainly wasn't going to complain about having an overly competent team member on a quest of all things, but he'd thought he was a relatively good fighter. During monster hunts and capture the flag, he was pretty sure he was outperforming his peers, those that he'd observed at least. He'd certainly heard about Sam's abilities, but the Demeter and Athena cabins seemed to always be allied during such events, and Sam was generally reinforced with the weaker members of the team. In hindsight, that should have told him something on its own.

Hearing about Sam and watching Sam fight were two entirely different experiences. Sam fought, well, like a powerful nature spirit. Kurt had read about feats that the older Satyrs and Nature spirits could perform, and what Sam could do didn't seem too different from that. Except that Sam was ten. Kurt was sure he'd miss it if his youth wasn't so obvious in his appearance. Sam was certainly… gifted, though he'd hesitate to use that word. It implied that Sam had gotten everything handed to him without effort on his part. Kurt had had enough of that at school to know that it wasn't pleasant to have your accomplishments swept under the rug of "natural talent." Still, Sam showed him that demigod abilities could be trained and mastered, something that no one seemed to try back at camp, at least that he knew of. Maybe being great at math and riddles wouldn't translate into any actual combat capability, but he might as well try before writing them off.

As the sun starts to dip below the horizon, rays of light filter through the leaves and out over the wheat fields. It shouldn't take this long to gather food, right? He didn't know exactly what kind of forest this was, but in a normal scenario, it wouldn't take him this long to find enough to eat, and he had no doubt Sam would be much better than him, with his power over nature. Which meant…

Oh no.

"Blossom, it's an emergency!" he hissed into her ear as he shook her awake.

To her credit, her eyes snapped open and her hand was already on the pistol she'd been given. Still, her alertness couldn't hide the way she struggled to pull herself up with her crutches.

"What's wrong?" She whispered back. He wasn't entirely sure why he'd thought to whisper in the first place, but maybe stealth would be necessary in… whatever they were going to do.

"Sam went out to look for food, and he hasn't come back."

Blossom glanced around. "Into the forest?"

"Yeah."

"I don't think a monster could beat Sam in a forest."

"Normally, I'd agree, but what about a monster that could trump his power over plants, one that might say, make its home in a magical forest?"

Blossom, didn't reply for a moment, and it was hard to make out her exact facial expression in the dimming light, but she was probably mulling over his words and coming to the same conclusion that he was. If there was a monster in the forest that could beat Sam, both of them combined didn't stand a chance.

He wouldn't be able to live with himself if they just abandoned him, but looking for him could be certain death.

"Where did he go?"

"Huh?"

"What direction did he go into the forest? We're going to find him," she said, steel seeming to override the tiredness in her voice, brooking no argument.

He glanced over at where Sam had vanished into the woods, pointed it out, and away they went. Blossom moved through the underbrush at a fast clip, despite the fact that her crutches were obviously still unbalanced.

Kurt wasn't exactly an expert tracker, but he knew how to forage for food, and Sam hadn't exactly been trying to cover his tracks when he'd been gathering. The trail led diagonally away from the border between the wheat fields and the woods, seeming not to stray too far into the forest until it abruptly ended.

Perhaps there was more, but the light was too dim for either of them to make out the next trace if there was one.

"Anything?" Blossom asked as she pulled herself to her feet. Kurt wasn't sure whether she should be rooting through the underbrush in her condition, but he knew he had no chance of convincing her of that.

"Nothing."

"He can't have just up and vanished!"

He caught movement out of the corner of his eye, and his hands reached for his daggers. Blossom caught his movement and reached for her pistol. Her exclamation must have drawn attention to them. The nymph who popped out of a tree is lucky she was out of his reach, or he might have stabbed her without fully processing what she was.

"Now, now, what could two children be doing out in the forest at night? It's dangerous, you know?" she said with a smirk that seemed contradictory. Though as far as he could tell, her tone was genuine.

Nymphs were supposed to be friendly to demigods, right? Or at least ambivalent. The ones at Camp Half-Blood didn't interact much with campers but didn't seem to mind sharing the forest with them too much.

"We're looking for a friend of ours. We know he was around here looking for food, but he didn't come back in a reasonable amount of time. He's shorter than either of us, brown hair and eyes, and wearing an orange T-shirt. Maybe you saw him?" Kurt asked.

"I… might have, but why should I help you out?" she asked in a tone he couldn't decipher.

"Look," Blossom speaks up, "I'm sure we can figure out a way to pay you back, but he could be in mortal danger as we speak, so could you please hurry up!?"

"I don't know… Giving-"

"Just shut up and take us to where you saw him!" Blossom interrupts.

To his surprise, the dryad did just that, stating, "It's this way." before leading them through the dark wood.

That was charmspeak, right? He didn't know Blossom could do that. He wondered if she even knew she could do that, but now wasn't the time to find out.

As they followed her, the underbrush started to thin out a bit, allowing for a bit more visibility near the ground.

The dryad led them to a conspicuous clearing in the forest, but Sam was nowhere in sight.

"What's this?" Blossom demanded.

"He went in and didn't come out."

"Dou know what happened inside?" Kurt asked, just to be sure. The dryad seemed to enjoy being circumspect.

"No, this area is warded from my perception by those greater than I," she said cryptically.

He glanced back at Blossom, who was staring at the clearing, her expression unreadable.

"Like who?" he asked, turning back. He had some idea of who and what could qualify, but it would be good to narrow it down a bit.

The dryad was already making her way back the way they had come.

"Hey! Wait!"

Either she didn't hear him, or she was ignoring him. He could chase after her, but Blossom hadn't moved.

"She's leaving."

"Let her go," Blossom said. "Her guidance wasn't particularly useful."

Something about that statement seemed to prick his memory. "Useful?" No, that's not the word, "Guidance?" Not "Guidance," "Guide." The Prophecy!

"A mother's gift shall be your guide," he muttered.

"Hm?"

"'A mother's gift shall be your guide.' From the prophecy."

"What about it? Do you see anything that could be a 'gift?'"

"Athena famously provided olive trees as a boon to Athens, and Demeter gifted Phytalos a fig tree for his hospitality. We just need to find one of them and see if they form a trail or something we can follow."

"Are you sure?" It was dark, but he could tell that Blossom was giving him a bewildered look.

"Do you have a better idea?"

"Fair enough."

It was difficult to find anything with just the bits and pieces of moonlight filtering through the canopy, but Blossom was ultimately successful in finding the first clue, a common fig tree. As to how she recognized one, she simply stated that "Sam has one in his backyard."

After getting a description from her, he found the next, seemingly directly opposite the clearing from the first tree. After that, there always seemed to be another tree within sight of the latest one, visible largely because they stood shorter than the other trees. Occasionally, they'd hear sounds that sounded like large animals or monsters getting closer to them, but luckily, they didn't cross paths with anything larger than a squirrel.

After an indeterminate amount of time, they spotted another clearing, or maybe the first one again. It was hard to tell.

It only occurred to him then that there was no way that the trees would line up in such a convenient manner unless someone arranged them in some way. He'd be sure to blame it on the lack of food and sleep when asked later.

Sitting in the center of the clearing was a short blonde girl, a bit shorter than Sam. She had a crown of flowers and wore a green dress that was absolutely covered in flowers, both embroidered and real. She seemed to be hard at work planting a flower into the center of the clearing, oblivious to their arrival. The flower itself was covered up by the shadow the girl cast, but what wasn't was a suspiciously Sam-shaped mound of flowers that was beside her. Oh, and it had Sam's brown eyes, too.

"Hello."

Oh, she was speaking to them now.

ΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔΔ

Sam:

You woke up to find yourself in a place that was surprisingly not pitch black. Of course, the ceiling above you seemed to simply be a dome of earth. The ground underneath you felt like hard-packed dirt as well.

You tried to get up, only to find that you were restrained, unable to do much besides wriggle around and tilt your neck forward a bit. You did the latter and found that you were tied up in a series of vines with colorful flowers growing out of them. You reached out with your power to free yourself… and it bounced off.

What?

"Hi!" greets an extraordinarily cheerful voice.

Its owner chooses to make her presence known by leaning over your prone form.

Your first thought was that she seemed far too pleased with herself. Your second thought was that she looked like she was your age, maybe even younger, and that was a pretty big red flag.

"How're you doing cuz?"

You can definitely say that you didn't expect your meeting with the goddess Persephone to begin this way.

Well, at least you know who set you up now, even if you should have gotten yourself out of that trap on your own.

Persephone's grin turns into a small frown. "Aww, don't be so hard on yourself. I fell for the same thing and I was much older than you."

You're not sure if that's very reassuring.

"Uh," you're also not exactly sure what to say in this situation. Oh yeah, greetings. "It's nice to meet you?" you try.

She grins again, then the vines prop you up into a sitting position. You note again that her chosen appearance is visually around the same age as you.

"Wondering why I look like this?" she says, seeming to pick up on your unasked question.

You nod. "Yeah."

"We-elll, since I don't have to tend to my duties as Queen of the Underworld in the summer, I like to relax and cut loose, and what better time to do something reckless and ill-thought-ought than in the Springtime of Your Youth."

"What?"

This is not at all how you expected this meeting to go.

"Enough about me though. I've been dying to meet you."

"You… have?"

"Mhm! It's not every day that a spirit enters the cycle of reincarnation without going through the Lethe."

Your blood runs cold. She knows. You open your mouth to… you're not sure, maybe feign ignorance?

"Ah, ah, before you say anything, I should tell you that only mom and I know and that you shouldn't tell me anything about your past life. From the way you act, I think you were familiar with the mythological before, but I don't know from when. If you happen to tell me about the future, even accidentally, well… Let's just say that The Fates can make things very unpleasant, even for gods." She shudders.

Well, that's a relief. Maybe. "Should I be worried?"

She ponders your question. "No. Well, actually, yes. There's no way The Fates don't know about you already, so since you're here they won't do anything drastic. That does leave the question of why they allowed you to exist in the first place, though," she says as if having your very existence erased is a very casual event.

You decide to change the topic before you start to freak out. "So, if you can't ask me about… that, why did you want to talk to me?"

"Your existence is still super interesting, and we can always talk about other things, like how you've gotten so much control over mom's domain before you hit puberty."

"Ok?"

"So, how did you like the little quest I made for your friend? I think it's pretty great, even though I had to bug mom so hard to let me use her fields."

"It was...."
[][It was…] Good?
[][It was…] Generous of you.
[][It was…] Very Dangerous.
[][It was…] Write-in.
First impressions are important.
"Out of curiosity, how did you convince Zeus to lend you his Eagle."

"Dad is very easy to convince if you have the right leverage," she says with a wink.

Did she guilt-trip Zeus? You have no idea. You also get the feeling she won't elaborate, even if you ask.

"You said something about discussing magical powers?" you change the topic again.

"Yup!" she says, as she starts walking, the fines seem to grow and wrap around you more firmly, before starting to drag you behind her. The ride is surprisingly smooth, the vines seeming to pull you along just above the ground in a level of fine control you'd have to focus intently to replicate.

"Feel free to ask me whatever you want," she says over her shoulder as she continues to walk down what appears to be a dirt tunnel.

Well, gotta start somewhere "I recently learned I can manipulate dirt as well as plant life. Any advice on getting better at that?"

"That's more my husband's sphere of influence than mom's. I wouldn't expect you to be able to get to a good level of control, and it'll probably get weaker the further you get underground. On the surface, though, you'll be fine. I guess I'd focus on manipulating more dirt rather than trying to have the dirt apply more force or make it do something similarly complex to your plants."

You mull over her advice, storing it away for later. What else are you curious about? Well, you could ask her about imbuing plants with concepts, but you also don't know whether she already knows you can do that or not. On the other hand, if she does find out, why not tell her?

[][Concept of Concepts] Ask her about it. (+5 EXP to Concept of Growth, Persephone and Demeter will know about this ability. Other gods could find out from them later.)
[][Concept of Concepts] Don't ask. (No risk.)
What I mean by "other gods could find out" is that if the situation ever comes up where Demeter or Persephone feel that it's relevant or necessary to bring up to other gods, they will do so.

Other ability-based questions.
Pick 1.
[][Ability Questions] Ask her about controlling many plants (+5 EXP to Macro-Chlorokinesis)
[][Ability Questions] Ask her about changing plant biology (+5 EXP to Plant Modification)
[][Ability Questions] Ask her about a specific Concept (+5 EXP) (Only if you tell her about Concepts)
-[][Ability Questions] Purity

Pick as many as you like.

QM Note:

Well, it's been longer than a week, but I am still going to try and get back to weekly updates for this quest. Personally, I like it a lot, I like how, together, we've shaped the protagonist, and I'm interested to see how you all will try to influence the future.

Not sure about parts of the Kurt POV, I think the exposition comes across a bit ham-handed, but otherwise, I like this chapter a lot. Initially, I wanted to try and wrap everything up here, but I felt like too much was cut from Kurt's PoV when I did that, so I split it up.

@_brightwing, as thanks for your wonderful piece of art, I'm giving you another 10 Omake EXP

Do we have all the wheat seeds or does Kurt?

If it wasn't clear in the chapter, you were out. Before that, you'd split up what you had between yourself and Kurt

I really think you guys are under-utilizing the 20 questions segment of this. At least add a few questions.
Also, to anybody that comes along later that's hesitant about asking about concepts: The cat's going to come out of the bag at some point. We might as well get it out now while we can still control how the information is interpreted.

Persephone shows that whether it's an idea that anyone knows about, magic still uses it. We gain nothing by keeping our mouths shut. At this point all we're doing is codifying a term.

...She knows about Thalia (and Jason maybe). And probably told Zeus she would tell. Hades might not send an army to kill her this time around because he might not learn of her in time to do so. Poseidon will be quietly pretending he doesn't have a demigod of his own growing up.

So that means the camp heads are confirmed friends? Or just acquaintances?

It was established in-story before Sam, Kurt, and Blossom left on their quest, but it's been a while and it was a minor detail.

@Monk Penguin That's an okay amount of questions right?

Yes.

You switched to first person here. You might want to edit it so that it stays in third person like the rest of it.

I knew I missed something. I'm a lot more comfortable in first person than in third, but I think it feels better to read a non-protagonist viewpoint as third-person, plus I want to get better at writing third person.

Er, I'm not so sure it's such a good idea to throw Sam's conceptual abilities into the deity grapevine, especially for only minor short-term gain. Seriously, even the nicest and most helpful of the Greek pantheon can be incredibly fickle, and knowing the luck of anyone connected to said pantheon the info will probably be disseminated in an unfortunate series of events, or maybe it'll be found out without whatever Magic is protecting Sam's info shielding it. If the info gets out, that's a good way to get a lot of "well-meaning" and incredibly dangerous attention from the gods, which probably isn't very great this soon into things. Better to leave it as an ace-in-the-hole, I think.
