You guys have got to be kidding me. I guess I'll give it 15 minutes to see if anyone wants to change votes or if a lurker wants to break the tie, then I'm flipping a coin.

Quest for Springtime's Basket I: Humble Beginnings
[35][Weapon] Yes.
[35][Third Member] Recommend Blossom ask Kurt
[22][Destination] Wheat Fields, KS

The morning that the three of you are supposed to leave, you unsheath your new weapon. The sheath itself is a bit wider than the blade to accommodate the curve of the blade. The blade itself is made of smooth celestial bronze. It's thicker on the outside of the blade, providing an area for you to deflect strikes and possibly projectiles if you're skilled enough. The inside of the blade curves down to an edge, you'll need to remember everything Violet and Justin taught you about weapon maintenance to ensure that it doesn't become blunt.

"Examining your blade?" Willow asks as the soft light of the sunrise starts to filter through the windows. She speaks softly so that your half-siblings on the other side of the room can't hear you two.

"Yeah, do you think I should name it?" you whisper.

"It's traditional to name your weapon only after you've accomplished a legendary deed with it," she whispers back. "No one ever says why, but I think it's to imbue the magic of the legend into the weapon itself."

"That seems like a reasonable theory."

There's a small silence. You put away the war scythe.

"Do you feel ready?"

"Honestly, I'm not sure."

"I would give you advice, but I've never been on a quest myself."

"I'll tell you all about it when I get back, ok?"

Another pause.

"Ok."

There's a rustling noise as Lily starts waking. She stands up in her sleepwear and walks over to your side of the cabin.

"You're awake, good, get ready, you need to head out early if you're going to catch your bus."

"Got it," you say as you get up and head to the showers. You purposefully don't look at the pile of flower petals that you're pretty sure are going to go into making your shroud and put on a t-shirt and athletic shorts that should be easy to move around in, as well as grab your bow and supplies.

You head out to grab a quick early morning snack with Blossom and Kurt Wynne, who you formally met last night and have had little chance to talk to. Overall, he seems like a decent fellow. He's slightly older than Blossom, at 16, and he has sandy blonde hair, grey eyes, and a lean physique. He is somewhat bookish, like Willow. Like Blossom, he has two beads. He seems nervous.

The three of you meet up with Chiron, Anne, Lily, and the head counselor of the Aphrodite cabin as you walk to the edge of the camp. You and Blossom hover around Lily, while Kurt sticks closer to Anne, discussing something with him that you can't quite discern without ignoring Lily's worried chatter.

As you reach the edge of camp, Lily pulls you into a tight hug. "I just, I figured you'd probably get sent out on a quest someday, you know. I just didn't expect it to be soon."

"Neither did I," you answer honestly

"Good luck," she says, letting go of you. You step back in line with Blossom and Kurt, again feeling very short. Blossom has her modified pistol strapped to her waist, underneath her shirt, while you and Kurt have your weapons on your back, also underneath your shirts. Anne assured you it was necessary for them to be accessible and to avoid scrutiny from "mortal authorities," otherwise known as the police.

You look back on the people sending you off. Chiron has a grave look on his face, though it seems more worried than severe. Lily looks worried, as she has been since you said you were going on the quest. Anne is… hard to read and the head counselor of the Aphrodite cabin just looks conflicted.

As you step close to the boundary of camp, something that's more ephemeral now than it will be soon, Chiron clears his throat.

"To the three of you, may Tyche smile upon you as you proceed with your quest." He hesitates, before continuing. "Remember, the gods are watching."

On that ominous note, the three of you leave camp. All in all, it's a quiet send-off. You think you'd prefer that to a more cacophonous one.

You have no trouble as you board the Greyhound to Kansas using the three tickets Chiron provided you, though it does remind you of the regular struggles you're going to have reading signs which is mildly annoying. You're informed that the trip will take approximately 26 hours and that you'll arrive in the early morning of July 17th, 2000. You settle in for a long trip. If anything, this gives you a good chance to get to know Kurt. In a half-empty bus on a long trip, people aren't exactly going to be listening in on you if you're quiet. Plus, if you say something really outrageous, the mist will probably cover you. It may cover you by convincing everyone you're nuts, but you're a ten-year-old, you're allowed to be a little nuts.

"Blossom told me that you're graduating early." Kurt initiates the conversation.

"Yes, actually, I should get my high school diploma next spring."

"Ah, that's… fast. How old are you?"

"I'm ten."

"Honestly, I would have thought you were younger, but still, that's impressive. Got any tips?" he says. You can't tell if that was supposed to be a joke, a rhetorical question, or an actual question. You decide to just answer it since if it's a joke, you can pretend you were continuing it. Your actual strategy is just to know all the material ahead of time. You can't tell him that in so many words, but you can suggest to him something similar.

"I study ahead a lot."

"I meant, more to do with… you know."

It takes you a moment to figure out that he's talking about what you might call the "demigod disabilities." Specifically, the ADHD and dyslexia that all demigods have and that prevent them from learning. Honestly, you've mostly been just pushing through it, though you doubt you could pull that off quite as well if you weren't as used to studying as you are. You might not remember all the material, but 17 years of school doesn't up and vanish in the blink of an eye.

"I mostly just… push through it I guess. It's hard, but it's doable, you just have to keep pushing yourself," you try. It's not great advice, but it's really the best you have.

"That's, well, I guess it's good to hear that it's actually possible. Just talking about it with other people at camp makes it seem like it's basically impossible to do well in school."

"Is doing well in school important to you? Is that, like, an Athena thing or…"

"Actually, I kind of want to go to a good college, and to get in, you need to have at least decent grades."

"I'm not the only person who's done it. The head counselor of the Ares cabin is trying to get into Westpoint, which reminds me, I should probably ask him about that."

"Thanks."

"Is there a particular reason you want to get into a good college."

"I want to be a mathematician. I don't think I'll be the next Euclid, Pythagoras, or Archimedes, but I think that even if it's just a little bit, I want to progress the field of Mathematics like they did."

"That's a pretty lofty goal."

Kurt chuckles dryly. "Yeah. What about you? You'll be done with high school before I will. Do you have any idea what you want to do?"

"I'm thinking some field of Biology myself."

"Oh, what kind of Biology? Zoology?"

"Botany, actually."

"Not going to follow in your dad's footsteps?" Blossom joins the conversation.

"Well, while what my dad does is a nice job, I'm not sure it's really for me."

"What about…"

The three of you discuss various things as the Greyhound continues west. At one point, Kurt asks you about your hobbies and is so surprised when you answer "gardening." He confesses that at some point during the conversation, he'd forgotten you were a son of Demeter.

Kurt suggested that you do a rotating night watch, even though it was unlikely that anything would happen on the bus. Both as a way to ensure that you were prepared if things did take a sour turn, and to practice for when you would inevitably have to do something similar.

Sleeping on a bus isn't particularly comfortable, but the three of you managed and felt decently well-rested by the time you made it to Kansas City.

As you gathered your things and stepped off the bus, Blossom turned to you and Kurt. "Does either of you know where we're supposed to go from here?"

You shrug and look at Kurt.

"I have several ideas, but I suggest we find a place to plan out our next steps." He looks specifically at you. "Preferably somewhere with a lot of greenery, like a park.

That's how the three of you find yourself in a memorial park near a museum in the central area of the city, about an hour's walk from where you got off the bus.

You find a bench and sit down Blossom appears to be looking up into the sky, possibly at the top of the memorial building, while Kurt pulls some notes out of his backpack.

"I have several ideas of where exactly we should go from here. According to all the information I could find, Demeter's fields aren't exactly in one geographical location, so-"

"Um, guys?" Blossom interrupts.

"Yeah?" you answer.

"I think you should take a look at that," she says, motioning with her head to the top of the monument, her eyes never leaving it.

You look up, only to be met by a massive golden eagle. You're not quite sure how big it is, but it seems to perch comfortably on the top of the memorial building, casting a large shadow. You can't help but notice that it's looking directly at you.

"Aetos Dios," Kurt mutters under his breath, " The Eagle of Zeus."

A quick check of your surroundings shows you that only a few people are milling about the memorial park and none of them have taken notice of the giant eagle that seems to have taken an interest in you.

QM Note:

Honestly, this got a whole lot more internal monologue-y than I intended. IIRC though, the original Percy Jackson books did have a sort of stream-of-consciousness feel to them.

Yes, this eagle is definitely the size of a building.

I don't think we need to be extremely cautious, just cautious enough.
On that note, might not want to piss off the current ruler of the Greek Gods.

The only downside to this plan is if the Eagle attacks while we're bowing, but hopefully feeding the Big Man's ego will be enough to get us off the hook. I can't see a reason he'd want to stop this quest, not yet anyway.

And if all else fails... at least we *tried* diplomacy before all else.

Just wanna put out there that an eagle that big isn't something we can escape from or survive any more than the most glancing of blows.

Also to put out there is that pissing off Zeus is a horrible idea, bad personality aside the dude isn't just the king cause he didn't get eaten, it's also cause he's probably the single strongest Olympian until Hades got a second item of power (which hasn't happened yet, might not happen, and which he swore to never use against the Olympians.)

With the caveat that we will be ready to run for our fucking lives if it decides to attack us.

yeah. Attacking the building sized lightning eagle that belongs to your mom's super powerful boss is probably a bad idea.

Would planning to form a shield be a good backup plan?

If the Eagle wants to attack we're pretty fucked. Our best bet would be to book it into a building, with the second best to get on it's back and hold on tight while it tries to kill us.

Third is a toss up between go for the eyes and get down it's throat without it chewing and attack it from the inside.

[X][Caucasian Eagle] Wait and see what it does.

I hate the idea of looking towards the ground when it could potentially attack us so bowing is a no go for me

If it's anything like it's owner, it's a prideful beast that will demand supplication and is powerful enough to extract it when necessary. We might have to do a side-quest if we want the Eagle's permission to pass through this territory, but there might be a boon in it for us if we do.
